Imagine if the Handler could do some of these things you suggest mid-hunt. Instead of the camera awkwardly locking on to the collapsable wall at the top of the tree, after a duration of fighting up there she chimes in and mentions how fragile it looks - prompting the player to find a way to break it. The wall is already visually clear in what its intention is, but the person tasked with understanding what the hell is going on could be doing the field work in real time instead of a wink and a nudge from the camera. Great video btw!

As you stated her problem, is the player can bascially ignore her outside of cut scenes. Chief Cat for food, quest board for quests, field team leader for annoying tutorials. As a player all I see her doing is getting into danger, giving useless advice, stuffing her face, and etc. She feel like a toddler I have to take care of, or dead weight.

And more importantly, despite her (almost) never being shown doing anything useful, she's constantly claiming equal credit for YOUR accomplishments. I mean FFS, your palico goes to her not you at the start of the game. That definitely got a lot of people off on the wrong foot with her, an impression that doesn't improve with time.
The players wouldn't be even a fraction as hateful of her if she felt actually useful in any way at all, but instead her presence feels like an extended insult.
Worth noting by the way, her character would come across EXACTLY the same if she was a man, so PaV's highlighting of misogyny as a noteworthy factor feels like a huge reach. Nobody is shit-talking the serious handler, the provision manager, the tracker, third fleet master or Grammeowster.
The worst part is, if she was generally the exact same personality (airheaded glutton), but COMPETENT and observably resourceful, she'd likely be a very popular character and her ditzyness would be considered endearing.

Her trying to take part of our hunts glory, is in part just the silent protaganist curse. The other part is she is largley invisible until these cut scenes.
Ratatoskr talked about worlds narritive issues. World likes to make this super serious and build tension. Ultmenlty for that tension to be a flop. The handler seems to be a casulty of this to, just in reverse.
As for the misogyny comment. Eh I kind of see were people come from, but largley it feels like a cheap cop out. @@Dewkeeper

@@nappa4317 Her being more visible during cutscenes wouldn't solve the dynamic, because the screen time she does already get is handled (heh) poorly.
She wasn't on some great character arc to becoming competent, so what is more time in the limelight going to accomplish? And with the silent protagonist curse, no other character in the game runs into this problem, even when they occupy a similar role.
Also I don't quite follow, what exactly is a cop out?

Not more visable during cut scenes. She need to be intergrated outside of them. Because she is not, I find her presence during the cutscene more jarring.
Simply put, I think her main issue is the lack of interaction outside the story. This for me is the core problem. The rest would fall under a general issues with Worlds story.
The misogyny bit is a cop out becasue no one acutally addreses it. Its flung out and left there to float. Just another ist slipped it without any basis.

@@nappa4317 Oh I see, yeah I agree, though even here, I think we'd essentially be asking for a character rewrite, because nothing in the existing material implies this was ever a goal.
But yeah, if she was shown actually contributing over the course of your gameplay, I think people would see her very differently, perhaps even adore her, because ultimately, she's got a good attitude.
And yes I agree with your second point. No explanation, just "other people bad". Which other people? How and why are they bad? How does it even relate to the topic at hand outside of the most superficial connection? Don't ask so many questions!

100%, I think I can speak for a lot of players that world just doesn't tell it's story right. For most players, they're the ones that are going in, and hunting these monsters to "balance" the ecology. That's it, for the majority of players, the only story being told in World is "We are THE heroes". In reality though, we're just a cog in the machine, and if you paid attention to the minute details, you would realize that we were a REALLY stupid hunter, and way in over our head when we thought only the humans are responsible to maintain the balance of the new world.
So because the story doesn't exactly showcase the idea of the cycle well, it gets to a point where every time someone says "we" did something in the game, the player's only real reply is "fuck you mean we, I was literally the only one there". Rise definitely solved some of that issue, as the NPCs actually get involved in your day to day hunts, but that's just the hunters of the village. As a long time player of MH who's really into the lore and ecology of the world, I understand the role of our handler. I just wish they did more with them. I definitely agree with a lot of the points you brought up that would help shine more spotlight on our important number 2.
As for the mods, as someone who LOVES modding, it's just the way it is man. People are just horny. And I do mean people, I have friends of both genders salivating at the idea of thiccness. As it is, I think it's harmless. The only times an NSFW mod like that is considered harrmful to me is when they start saying things like, "X character is too ugly, this will make them better". Then it becomes less of a situation where you're just a degenerate, and more you're a degenerate AND an incel/femcel. I am extremely thankful that there are a good amount of mods that offer a variety of SFW and cool things to balance out the NSFW ones.

For sure on the Rise NPC thing. I was actually jazzed to see not onl NPCs joining hunts, but then they also communicate to each other during the hunts! So you can get a better idea of the interpersonal relationships of tons of characters. Which is pretty cool!
As for the modding stuff, oh yeah I'm aware of the horny mods. I'm also not above it either. I've dabbled a few times. My thing was every time I did, I felt closer to that hard degen shit that I wasn't always super comfortable with. But that's just me.
And yeah, I agree on the incel thing lol. Its why I rolled my eyes for that one specific mod

BOLD decision to start the video with that joke haha!
Absolutely loving the energy and vibe of this video. The 9 straight hours of editing clearly paid off, plus however long the script and footage-finding took. Ecology is the coolest part of Monster Hunter and it's why all the games that try to do the same thing (cough cough Dauntless) often fail. I'm very sad to hear that World doesn't succeed at making it feel as important as it should be.

World actually does a really good job. Its just with respects to the Handler specifically.
Rise, on the other hand, does a terrible job but that's just because its more gameplay focused

You offered some really good ways to fix the problem with the handler, when she calls me Pard it is annoying because we don’t feel like a team.
She is there at camp doing nothing that I can see or sitting in the canteen. She is not integral in any way to my hunts that I can tell.

On the topic of expanding Handler's role, for gameplay reasons, her giving hints of interactions can be translated into [bonus quests].
The bonus quest starts out with "do x to diablos" and the handler at the start of the quest says "hey partner, i heard from the research group that diablos are really good at hearing things, do you think they hate loud noises?" Then the bonus quest "do x to diablos" pops up, before hiding itself into the menu.
This incentivizes the player to figure out the hint when interacting with diablos during a hunt.
You notice from a few earlier hunts with other monsters in this map that the small monsters flying in the area alarm other small monsters to flee whenever a large predator is approaching (could be anjanath, deviljho, glavenus and rathian) and whenever the screamers get hit by anything, they scream with a shrill cry, then fly away to a safer part of the combat area.
You see the bonus quest pop up at the start of your fight with Diablos before hiding itself back to the menu again as a quick reminder for your incentive.
You put 2 & 2 together, hit the screaming monsters during the time whenever Diablos is underground because you aren't doing anything else, so why not, and get rewarded with diablos resurfacing into a trapped animation with a raised stun vulnerability. The camera briefly zooms in on the interaction, the bonus quest pops up again and changes into " Use a screamer on Diablos" before clearing itself. And at the quest reward screen, you get a bonus of screamer sacs and screamer pods alongside some goodies and bonus research points.
This incentivizes interaction and the reward makes it a positive thing for players to repeat.
The quest only pops up once since the hunter doesn't need to be reminded again & again as that would be an insult to the player's intelligence.
There are multiple bonus quests per monster as your research level increases from Lv1 to Lv4. All monster drops are available, but their drop rate is standard, BUT the drop rate for certain low % parts like Gems and Mantles will only increase after you clear the bonus quests.
This gives research-inclined players a reward for playing the game to 100% and the combat-focused players get neat coincidences.
There's probably more that could be done with this system in mind, but I can't think of any beyond collecting monster tracks at the moment.

They wanted the handler to be the caravaneer, they wyventurer, and be the quest gal all at the same time :U she is the main character in the game tbh, its just they didnt do a great job with that concept- specially in the gameplay aspect

On the topic of ecology...you mention Valstrax. Elder Dragon mate. ALL Elder Dragons are like that. Literally in the lore too. Elder Dragon is literally the classification for ANY monster which has attributes which cannot be explained. How does Kushala Daora manipulate wind and fly when its skin is coated in metal? Elder Dragon. How does Kirin control lightning, and electricity without a thunder sac or any other corrosponding attritube like Tobi-kadaci's thunder sac and static electricity, or Zinogre using its Highly conductive thunderfur to store electricity and thunderbugs to create it.
Outside of the lore, The creaters of the game series incorperated Elder Dragons to further push the fantasy of the game, while also using them to showcase how grounded the other designs are.

Further points, cause I like your train of thought on how to improve her. Making her point out the ecological solutions. They can use her to point OUT the Ecology as you were saying, such as with Anjanath. Have her point out that it doesn't grow a horn, it's actually an incredibly powerful nose to smell out prey. From there have her say something about the problems of having a powerful nose like " Hey Pard! Did ya know that Anjanath's nose grows and looks like a horn when it looking for prey? It can smell its prey from miles away! Whew, i'd hate having that after chili night"
Bam, gonna try a dung pod on this guy.
.... Mind you, they really messed up on dung pods. they are pretty useless. They could have put more interaction in with those, but due to restraints and problems, they couldnt program in more. Anjanath have poor eyesight. Dung was suppose to effect them like a flash bang, while flash bang was suppose to not effect it. It was scrapped
I mean that's Anjanaths whole thing. It got a flame sac, and it uses said flame sac to ignite the mucus it generates in its massive nose. That's why you see the nose flair out, which means it's "Charging it's laser" and eventually the sails come out, which means it's ready to fire, as those help regulate the internal heat. Now how great would it be if any of THAT information was told to you in game? So originally, It flairs it's nose to start charging it's snot, and a dung pod would have made it stop. Still kind of does if you consider they will run away
