Starting a Locomotive, (Full Sequence), EMD GP10 at the Florida Railroad Museum in Parrish, FL

- Here is the complete startup sequence of this GP10. It was originally a "B" unit for Union Pacific, then was rebuilt with a cab later on. The only step I didn't show was me opening and closing the test cocks on the engine, which are valves that allow moisture to be purged out of the cylinders prior to starting. That's why it appears I've tried to start the engine twice.
Thanks! I've been trying to figure out how to start my new train all morning!
Has it worked then?
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi yes. But I can't use it anyway. The tires are flat.
Shame. I could sell you some, but I only got spares left.
Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi lol
Abu Bakr al-Baghdad
Most important part : unfold the chair.
Lol
It might have an interlock
True my uncle didn't do it and now he dead
What if it is already in position ???
@@chelladuraipec7973 you have fold the chair for shutting down engine so it cannot be already in position
the only thing these videos cant give us is the smell...
gittyupalice96 you make a good point!
I guess when I'm refueling I could just soak myself in diesel fuel then watch train videos and it would complete the youtube experience.
gittyupalice96 there you go :)
LOL XD

At one time...everything in there was brand new....
Michelangelo Mason that was a loooooong time ago
tk aubuchon Intresting how did it look like....
re manufactured into a gp10. originally made in ~1950
No way!
thanks for showing, the fun part is when you push the red handled "lay" shaft, and rev-up the engine. its used on cold engine, its a throdle handle.. keep up the good work.
Nagyon jól szól a V12.
Gyönyörű hangja van.
I’m now the conductor of 741 different trains because of this video, thanks!
How coooool is this!
Keeping this video saved in case I ever have a Train to Busan moment.
So that's why you never hear of a stolen locomotive.
Hold my beer.
Doesn't matter if you figure out the sequence to get it started. You still can't move it without the reverser which is removed after it's shut down.
That’s quite a procedure !!!
Come on Kenny, we're going to Savannah
Francesco Muriana why just why
i miss twd now
The beast has awakened
Amazing video, I have always loved trains, great job.
I always wondered. thanx for the upload. I'd like to see further procedure, getting her moving.
VaperBok75 unfortunately moving a locomotive while using a cell phone is against our rules. Since I wasn't moving it anywhere I got away with doing this video
wow awesome! 🤩
All these switches and controls ... if they would be accessible from the driver's seat, that would mean too much comfort 😊😅
Nothing like starting my little ge44, damn I love that little bugger lol.
It’s interesting how many extra steps there are to starting a diesel locomotive than a diesel truck
I love the smell of diesel in the mornings... smells like... victory!
Don't know why but this reminded me of the beginning of Back to the Future ;)
I can't believe that actually started.
Super and very informative and interesting video...very useful...brother...
Thanks! Now I’ll go Steal that Train I’ve been Eyeing
I love how it sounds like a washing machine when it first starts to turn over
varry good
Lucas Castro Thank you.
Oh how i like that sound of big old engine
I understand the reason behind pulling the governor button out but in my 12 years of doing this no one has ever said to lol. Normally just open the flashcocks and pull the layshaft back and crank it for 3x-4x unless moisture is present.
0:46 RIP headphones users
Only thing missing is the reverser handle to allow you to move the engine. Good thing I have one sitting here (an original EMD brass one, not the plastic ones they eventually went to).
Кого это волнует
Great video
It helps to use the lay shaft to start the unit.
Imagine being late for work and having to start your car up like this...
2 minutes? No bad, faster than my car
Didn't manually push the fuel rack to half throttle. All drivers get lazy and don't do it. Very hard on the starter motors if you don't.
Thanks. Now i can steal it.
So you don't just grab the key is off the board in the office head out and fire it up??
Just kidding, great video thank you for sharing. I've always had a deep interest in trains. So much that I have even made a handful of train videos from my UA-cam channel. Nothing quite as cool as this but just some locomotives passing
There is one sad thing... in america this locomotive is in MUSEUME in Serbia we still use it as main locomotives....
Sounds smooth👍💪
GTA makes it look so easy
When that motor hits... If that doesn't light your fire, then your wood is wet
THIS ENGINE SOUNDS TUFF!
In a news paper soon you will see
Florida man crashes train after watching UA-cam tutorials
The engine just rattled to life
Love that idle...
m also want to be a train driver coz my grandfather is also loco poilet
Rahul Mark that's cool
Very interesting
The process of my brain waking up=
The start up sound is like ALCO...
amazing
There was one thing that to me dont make sense why do you pull start whit the Woodward protection showing the red color?
Excellent now I can move the one some jackass parked across my driveway
Ok thanks now iam going to drive rail engine whatever comes radius of my eyes
this locomotive start reminds me of the one in the walking dead from telltale :( Lee had to start it
Is there a hot plate in the cab for making some soup?
Thank you!
Your welcome!
very interesting.
Do locomotives intentionally have the most uncomfortable seats in the world?
Why pull out the oil pressure switch when blowing down?
as the description reads that this loco was originally a B unit for UP, was it part of a GTEL consist? I know a few of them were built and all but two GTELs were scrapped
Man this thing makes my 7.3 idi look so tiny.
Very cool
Why train engine never shutdown while stopping and End station ?
and if the battery is dead just roll it down a hill and pop the clutch
For some reason I thought it was just putting a key in the ignition
Smoking a joint would be wow
thankz for watching ?????😕
thankz for uploading. 😁😁😁
nice one....
Sunny Mishra thank you!
Thanks!
There is a part 2 ... Actually starting the train
That seat looks so comfy you'd fall asleep on a 6h long ride. Do you guys get at least a free back massage at the end of the day?
I Watched before I read the description./ SO at abou 36 seconds - the push /pull pin with some red - what did that do ? Cut off the fuel while purging air with test cocks open (I call that blow-down or blow out)
wfoj21 yes that's exactly what I did. It's the governor switch which kills the fuel pump
awesome video...
i was always in question that how the railway engine starts
The beginning stages are a lot quieter than I expected, none of those switches made impressive sounding clunks
This Is HowToBasic!
Welcome to the machine.... (yes, a Pink Floyd reference)
Bhai ya diesel locomotive h kya electric locomotive h
Wonder what the fuel mileage is
Think I'm going to stick to my car.
Are those huge impellers the fuel pump??
Nice
I wonder how much does this monster has
what sort of hours between overhauls, and total lifespan of average engine?
Ben Davis The class ones do a 92 day inspection and give them a full service. This particular locomotive was built in the 50's and we just now had to start replacing liners recently
I'm a conductor qualified with RCO locos. I'v had to start SD38-2's and SD40-2's but have always had the governor button pushed in. Why was the governor pulled out and the engine start cycled then primed before doing the usual start up?
We do a process called "blowing down" our locomotives. By pulling out the governor button, killing the fuel pump, and turning the engine over your're allowing any condensation to be forced out of the test cocks. The part I didn't show was me opening and closing them. I pull the switch rather than just wait to throw the fuel pump breaker so I can do everything from the long hood.
Thanks.
No. They just give us what they think is good training and run with it. They never told us about what could cause a manifold overpressure for one thing. I was attempting to restart an engine one day and just couldn't get that thing to start. Eventually when the mechanic showed up he said the engine wont start because the engine was over pressured. They gave us a booklet that showed us where the most common things were that we would work with. Our training was vastly different than what the engineers got.
Doesn't he need to wait for the glow plug light to light up first before turning it over?
joysticktroy no glow plugs in this engine
Cant belive it used to be a b unit
Me and my friends where trying to start a abandoned train but it wouldn't start it just made a weird noise ( it was vibrating ) it and turned off
Seized motor.
funny looking steam locomotive
Oookay, so, foot on brake and then push to start right?
Zeshaan Alikhan something like that lol
Air powered starter using cylinders or motor generator cranking ?
motorhead motor generator gets reversed to turn it over
Oh, cool.
Lot of stuff to go through like that
sounds like my old 7.3 idi
How? Just how?
I have garage in st 39...
Bring it for oil and filter change
now youve shown me this no train is safely parked hahaha'
I just thought we need to rotate a key
Trains then: Squigglefloop the dip doop to magnify the hydroelectric spork 'n shit.
Trains now: On/Off
damn, and i thought the crown vic was indestructible... this thing looks like its about 3 miles from falling apart
Its old but still going strong
how would you shut it down though, cause now I have a locomotive that I don't know how to shut down...
The Amazing Gamer 129 push the button that says emergency fuel cut off. Also you can pull the throttle handle slightly and push forward and it shuts down
tk aubuchon thanks but the cops already caught me this morning... lol
The Amazing Gamer 129 guess I need to put a disclaimer on this video now haha
😂 😂 😂
Just take a trusty sledgehammer to the engine, you might die, and sometimes it takes more than one whack, but it gets the job done!
So here i am killing time by learning about starting a diesel electric locomotive during corona virus lockdown/quarantine. Hope I'm not the only one
John Smith yep same bro
Yeet
Yeah you are not the only one bro
Same here. BTW I've also spent time learning how to fire up and bring up to operating pressure a steam locomotive, both a full size one and a scale one
Same
