Crap pay, little or no benefits, no set work schedule, toxic management, no opportunity for promotion/pay raises, expendable. America is failing on so many levels.

30 years ago I got into retail and after 6 months I got promoted to a co manager position. Back then even part time NON management got benefits. And then it was only for management. And then it was just for full time managers which was just basically the store manager. I just kept pushing myself forward to keep ahead of the game. It was stressful but I always brought in goodies for my employees. And many followed me to other stores I managed. I got more flies with honey than vinegar. I could never understand why some managers were so mean to their employees. To me, it would make the work time go slower and just not a good environment

Sounds exactly like the job my 35 yr old son has. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Communications/Advertising and hasn't been able to find a decent job in his field. The past 10 years he's worked at various companies doing sales and can't seem to catch a break even though he goes above and beyond. He's totally disgusted.☹️

Let's not forget the crappy attitude and rude behavior of the general population at some of these retail/food industry jobs. My young adult kids have worked at these positions in high school and college. Some of the stories about the customers they would come home with were crazy. Rude is just the tip of the iceberg, most of it was downright abusive behavior. Respect and common courtesy seem to be a thing of the past. The general population seems ready to come unhinged at any moment. Another symptom of our failing society. No wonder there is such high turnover in the service industry.

New employees and travelers in healthcare get a high starting pay and sign on bonuses. No retention bonuses for the ones that have all the knowledge and do all the work. Two retired, including myself, and another left within three months because of it. Not to mention these travel techs are guests in our hospital and getting paid well some of and them treat the other employees horribly.

I think in looking back over my life, the job that I stayed at longest had a female leader who created a family atmosphere at the school. I think women respond well to a "family" leadership style. We had a very low turnover rate at our school campus. Most of where there when the campus opened and stayed until she was kicked upstairs 11 years later. I stayed one more year after she went into administration because I did not want to disappoint her by not giving the a-hole male principal that replaced her a chance to prove himself. Other teachers did likewise. About 45% of his left after his first year as principal. He was a tyrant and sucked the life right out of you.

People don't quit their jobs. They quit toxic management. I left a decent-paying job last June. I was so stressed due to highly toxic management. Haven't had one seizure since I stopped. I also have realized that hard workers work get crapped on, and everything they do is wrong in the boss's eyes. The lazy people who do no call no-shows are rewarded.

I’m retired now. I noticed those that moved to other companies and then came back received much more pay than the ones who stayed and got the piddly 3 percent or less raises each year. You have to move around with a big jump in pay each time or your salary will not keep pace with inflation.

    • @lisam200
      @lisam200 3 місяці тому +2

Definitely. Your piddly 3% was better than my company that only gives raises to office employees every three years. Also, new employees with zero experience are being hired for lesser jobs and making more than me with 34 years experience.

I started working in 1988 too , also as a teacher but in Singapore. I have a college degree and teaching diploma. Back then my free lance pay per hour was 30 SGD . I dont know what the exchange rate was back then but in 1990 it was 1.8 at the highest. Generally the rate has fluctuated between 1.30 and 1.8.with it being at the lower end in the past 20 years. But even at 1.8 , I was making 16 USD per hour. By 1990 it was 50 SGD per hour , now it is 80 SGD per hour and with an exchange rate of 1.36 that works out to 59 USD per hour. I havent upgraded my skills.
Your salaries sound extremely low in the US at least for teachers. I dont know if our qualifications are similar. However you can see how much wages have increased over the years in Singapore. We pay much less income tax too compared to Americans.
Of course our cars and private housing are extremely expensive compared to yours but our wages make them affordable. Moreover all citizens are eligible for heavily subsidised apartments which after 5 years can be sold on the open market , many make big profits on these. Buy at 400k , 5 years later sell at 1million. But we are only eligible for subsidies twice. As for cars, being a small city with very efficient public transport, we dont need a car.
Btw full time wages have also gone up a lot over the years. A fresh college grad in 1988 could expect to start on 1.5k per month. Today it would be in the 6 to 7.5k range in SGD. In USD it would be in the 4.4k to 5.5k range.

I managed many different stores thru the years and I would cut way back the hours of those that were more slackers at work. And a lot of times I would say to them, “if you owned this business, would you be ok with your employees just standing around while being clocked in ?” They always said no. Hmmmm. So, I rewarded good work with more hours and they got requests off more often. If they were standing around, I’d tell them to go clock out and go home. And they would say “but I need the money”. Then I would say, well, then you need to work when you are here ! And by the way, these were not new people that didn’t know what to do. I’m taking about seasoned employees

The division between the ultra rich and middle to lower class has increased dramatically. You are correct that most companies only care about their bottom line and giving dividends and increases to their stockholders. They cut corners in staffing, benefits and training and then scratch their heads wondering why they cannot recruit and hold onto employees. People are waking up and are tired of being treated like a number at work. I've known people who worked at companies for decades then are let go because the company decides to get rid of the entire department and source the work out to save money. Loyalty doesn't always pay especially when it comes time to fill upper positions. Instead of promoting from within many companies will hire outside the company making employees feel like there is no room for growth and forcing them to leave in search of other opportunities. Many young people have seen their parents being mistreated by companies and have decided life is too short to spend it making other people rich. That's why they value experiences over material wealth. It'll be interesting to see what the future holds for corporate America and their workers!!

I think a lot of these things have been going on for a long time but people weren’t as vocal because social media didn’t exist. I had several iffy work experiences for sure. I resigned one position, because one of the supervisors was so mean and condescending that he was making it a very toxic environment. And I was done the day that a co-worker was called that her daughter was in a car accident and the supervisor told her if she left that she would be docked on her employee reviews. 😢. That was around 2004 or something like that.
I also went on a job interview (advertised as a great job for a mom) that I got up and walked out in the middle of the interview. It was when my boys were littles. It would have been in the late 90s. I was asked in the interview, “If one of your sons got sick and was put in the hospital, what would you do about work?” I responded that I would call my supervisor first thing the next morning so that they can make adjustments to their plans. They said, “We need to know that you will put this job ahead of your family. If you can’t, you’re not a good fit for this job.” After I took a second to pick up my jaw from the floor, I said, “You’re correct! I am not a good fit for your company!” And I got up and left!

I agree with what you are saying about much of this. Another problem is the general public seems to be very short tempered, rude and impatient. My young adult children have worked in the fast food industry. Some of the stories they come home with about the customers are crazy. People seem ready to fly off the handle at every little thing and have zero respect for others. That is one of the reasons there is such turnover in these types of jobs. No one wants to work in these types of environments long term.

She lives about a 25 minute away not to mention both of her parents were at work. So the reply back from the manager was "you're not starting off on your first day very well are you?" She again explained that she had no possible way to get there within an hour so manager texted back that she could come in at 1:00 then. I think this is unreasonable. I really think someone didn't show or called in and the manager was trying to make it look like there was plenty of help in the store.
She worked it out that first day would be the next day but still, I think an hour notice for a first day on the job is ridiculous.

You hit on every reason why i sometimes hate my job. I love what I do plus some of my coworkers are awesome, but the lazyness of the supervisors & other coworkers stresses me out. I'm the only one in my area that was properly trained so i end up having to do most of the work. If i don't prep ahead, no one will which makes my job even harder. I was taught "You got time to lean, you got time to clean." Unfortunately no one seems to care anymore.

I just retired from healthcare (hospital Laboratory). Healthcare is not centered on the patients anymore. It’s all about profit and following too many government regulations…not to mention the hospital CEOs are making mega bucks. It’s not what I signed up for. It’s very different than from when I started 34 years ago. Add the other things you mentioned and it’s not an appealing profession anymore.

For me it was incompetent, insecure managers and toxic work environment. I used to enjoy the office though; morning coffee on my desk, team activities, etc. I miss it but dont want itback.

That has been going on since way before Covid. Mist jobs in customer service have you doing the jobs of 2-3people and they expect you to finish those jobs in your scheduled time or they reprimand you. They don't want to hire more people to cover the extra work.

Valued! Everyone wants to feel valued by the management and higher level corporate people. But with mega corporations this bad attitude or feeling undervalued trickles down from higher up.

Excellent video. I feel that the work environment these days is so difficult for many, for the reasons you outlined. Certainly in the UK, employee rights, benefits, job security & pay (relative to inflation) have diminished greatly over the last few decades, leaving many employees sullen, de-motivated & financially struggling. We are living through huge societal changes which are very unsettling. It reminds me of the dying days of the Roman Empire.

@@Joce123 4 years ago we bought a Honda Civic. It gets 44 MPG.
our state is now sending out additional tax bills for electric car owners and hybrid car owners. The reason being is , folks who drive hybrid cars use less gas and electric cars use no gas so the government is losing those tax dollars that they add at the pumps. They get ya one way or another. 🙄

The care my husband received in Houston for his cancer treatment was phenomenal. Everyone was kind and upbeat. Every person we met was friendly and truly concerned for the patient. I think that amount of dedication and attitude comes from the top. Supervisors should encourage the best from their employees, not berate them, or have impossible schedules for them to complete. We all know there's inflation, and employers are trying to keep costs low and profits high. The balancing act is getting the most from your employees without overwhelming them. It isn't fair to anyone to short staff a shift. It breeds discontent that will affect the employee's attitude. Great topic! Love to all, Linda 💕

It is reasonable to expect that sum will not want to do their job really good....But imagine a time when God will give us the energy to do a good job even tho things maybe up in fhe air....like Isaiah 40:28-31....that is what God says that will give us fhe energy to endure....By keeping a positive attitude can keep yr energy up high. And there is always a bad apple in a bunch....but by keeping yr attitude a positive one. I worked at a place where there were two bosses who didn't always see eye to eye. But by keeping the communication open it worked out for me....and all others as well. Even tho it was sometime hectic....I still kept a positive attitude....😊😊😊

I think you were spot on with your list. When you do a good job and are appreciated as a valued employee it is a whole other world when you are not appreciated. I think many times it is the fault of management when employees are not happy. At least that has been my experience.

At least 20 years ago, and i'm sure its still going on today, but, I've worked temporary jobs, not good, what happens after the job ends, its very stressful, to say the least, the temporary jobs should be stopped, how does a person live off of a temporary job, I have a family, that is very supportive, but, what if someone doesn't, my opinion. thank you, 😊❤, understaffed, happens alot in the nursing field, I worked many a nights, by myself, and a person just gets burned out, and they dont hire anyone to help, or don't give a person any help, its all about the $.

The only thing worse than a crummy job is no job! I've been lucky, but started working in early 60's when things were a lot better than today's world - in so many respects. Plus, IMO, just about every job has some kind of downside - that you either learn to put up with or move on.

Health spiraling down due to stress, doing job of 2.5-3 full time people while some others same title in the office have much less to do and no stress. Management won't staff up my group. Single, in the job to look out for my future (pension, health care) and wages down 15% in my area of US, lots of layoffs. Not good time to switch jobs. Really need a dozen more years but past my limit now.

Those good and great companies are few and far between unfortunately. I do feel for the young people.
I would suggest to them to look for a career or job that they feel very positive about. Something they enjoy doing, and want to spend a lot of time working at it.
Working just for a paycheque isn't going to cut it, and will leave you empty. Build on to your experiences and enjoy each day! 😊

Taught our son that when he chooses to work somewhere he needs to feel like it’s a wheel moving forward- all parts and positions matter. If he doesn’t feel that- it’s ok to leave. The corporations have little use for humanity these days over all- finding a decent place to offer your energy and experience can be a challenge!
