Sounds as though you're on top of your budget. There's no shame in going to a food bank to help.
I’m on disability. I have someone living in my other bedroom rent-free. In exchange , he keeps my yard mowed, home clean, and other things around the house.

Glad he is keeping keeping up his end of the deal. My adult son and his girlfriend moved back home for a few months. I didn't want to charge him rent but things are tight and we all need to pull our own weight. He loves outdoor work so I asked him instead to take care of the yard. it's a very good contribution and now we don't have to pay for a lawn service.

My thoughts, and I pray I don't come across as judgemental, because I had to tell myself the same thing! I heard a frugal UA-camr say there are rarely actual emergencies( monetarily speaking) there is only lack of planning. For example, when you purchase a new car, immediately start a savings account for the next vehicle. We all know that autos, a/c units, refrigerators, etc don't last forever, so plan for the eventual failure. We know children may break bones, need a tonsillectomy, have expenses in their senior years, etc. Plan for them. Inflation happens and prices rise regardless of politics, the home you purchased for possibly 88k( an example) would only have cost maybe 26k when your father was young.
We also have to remember, our grandparents didn't have the same expenses we have today. They didn't have cell phones, cable, Amazon etc. Many didn't even have to pay for insurance, or water bills, etc. Their homes were smaller, usually, and it was standard to have multiple generations in the same home. They didn't always have multiple bathrooms, and many other things we take for granted in newer homes. Sorry for the ramble😂 just a few thoughts!😊

I see your point but I still believe there are" emergencies" people never consider will happen. An uninsured drunk driver crashed through three of our pasture fences and we had to do all the clean up and repairs. Also we just had a vegetation fire take out 12 acres and a building site on our property. Yes insurance is supposed to cover most of it. minus the deductible. In the 30 years we have been on the property , we have never had a fire.
@@silentnot4812 in my case my life changed fast for the worst is what made it so I took a quick pay job and then switched to a nother which was my second job, I'm 55 and have nothing but a minimum wage job and a boss who is old enough to retire. I hold out hope for myself and just pray I stay strong and healthy to work 20 more years.
Yes! Window a/c units!! We did that, they worked better and our bill was MUCH lower.
We have one big window unit. Works to cool our3,000 sf home

I live on a disability income of $1100 a month, I'm DEBT FREE. Last yr and half I managed to save $4000. In June of this yr in just 3 days I spent all that money I saved on car repair, plumbing repair n emergency vet for my cat. How demoralizing. That's what I saved that money for so I could pay cash for any emergency, but it took so long to save it that I feel frustrated having to start all over again. But I will start again.

I think people don't realize, or don't accept, being debt-free means you MUST sacrifice - whether it's time, convenience and/or money - consistently over months or years. Not only do you need a budget, you need to plan for unexpected expenses. I didn't own an oven for 10 years when mine broke. I sold my car and take the bus or walk. I moved into a live/work space above a shop that doubles as a storage unit. I launched my own business to earn more income. Financial security is worth sacrifice - no shame in my game.
This is so true, and hard work will pay off - but it can take a long time to get to where we want to go. If we do nothing, we will never get there. Delay is not failure," is a phrase that has carried me through long, hard times.

I always thought once you became debt free you would be on easy street. Not at all the case. Now you have bigger payments to make to stay that way.

We drive a 2010 fully paid off Toyota Corolla. My husband works and I stay home 🏠. He makes a nice salary of 70k - our little apartment is $1,470 dollars a month but that includes heat and internet. We are very frugal and to be honest it’s my husband who keeps a spreadsheet of our monthly budget, sinking funds, savings, and he tracks all of our spending. This way we are able to save and invest 15 percent of our income and have sinking funds for larger expenses. We also tithe to our church and give alms of 10 percent. I do think attending our Catholic Church and praying to our Lord and giving to the Kingdom helps to have our needs met. I make all our meals home cooked. We do eat out twice a month with our son and take our older children and grandchildren to a nice meal a few times a year - travel is just to visit family. God will take care of you if you trust him and honor him I love you all ❤
Tithe? That's impossible to do. You are not tithing. Please read your bible or google tithing. You need to change churches if they are teaching this heresy. Giving, of course, tithing, no it's impossible

I think a lot of people ( me included ) that don't know a lot of people near me anymore. Someone that I could split large purchases from Costco for example, or trade/share things. We do have a great neighbor that has some great skills we didn't have and we have some great skills they don't have so we are always helping each other out in that way. Keeping an eye out for each other. It's such a blessing!

That's something we hope to do when we move. A neighbor I met is willing to rideshare to the food bank 1x a month and rideshare to Costco which would be great!! $5 chickens go far

I work 42 hours a week feeling too tired to add a side gig. I visit a monthly food bank. Our food runs out the last 3-5 days of each month. To cut my grocery bill would mean consuming a ton of junk food which is always cheaper but not worth it. 7% is deducted from my paycheck (401k) & the companies health pkg is very good w/a low premium of $25 per mo. Food bank includes junk yet includes these staples too: 1-3 dozen organic eggs, yogurt, almonds, pecans, garlic, onions, dried fruit & tuna.
It's crazy I have elderly family living 45 minutes from Minot North Dakota on a farm... Their insurance.
It's only covers their doctor to an 2.5 hours away in Bismarck North Dakota. There was one house for Sale $67,000 and sold within hours... Even trying to move to said cheaper place just to be closed to our doctor is almost impossible. The next cheapest place is a $189,000.
I have decent but not fancy house.. I'd be happy to rent to somebody who would get the bedroom on the first floor private Bath living home and kitchen while I use the lower very modest area for myself... But the reason I won't is because of the eviction more torium that they are considering in Congress to be permanent... Are you kidding that means? I permanently would be stuck with somebody that was not a good roommate?!.. Nope I can't help somebody out by giving them inexpensive rent.... Even if I could find someone who's non-smoker without pets nor drinking and no overnight guests I could actually afford to let someone stay for 300. A month I just can't risk it.
Alliance energy in Iowa just raised their rates by 19%... I am looking for more portable solar generator items... I got some good solar energized lights. That will illuminate my living room and kitchen enough to be comfortable but not quite good enough for reading. $24 for 2.. The solar panel is about 5 inches square and I can get sunshine from the window to power the solar light so I don't have to have it outside... No worries about theft or weather damage.
@@Joce123 I hear you. We live out in the boondocks with public transport just 1x a week so I need to drive. Often in a snowstorm which takes 2x a s long but the house was what we could afford. Good luck to your Elderly family, that's rough.

Window units don't look as nice as Central air but they operate much more efficiently.
I have neither one but I am thinking of getting a portable one with wheels next year for at least my bedroom. I have never lived in a place that has had A/C. I only have it in my car.
Yes to window a/c units. I also live in Texas. One of my brothers needed complete new HVAC system and spent ~ $24k. Granted that his a/c system is super nice and quiet, but what I like about my window a/c units is that should one fail, for less than $500 I'm back in business the same day. My window a/c units seem to last as long as a central HVAC, and the newer models are quieter than the old ones from years ago. I stopped buying new cars 20 years ago - and I don't bother with full comprehensive insurance, I just get liability insurance. The extra money for comprehensive adds up to the value of a used car every 12 years. I've had a few scrapes over the years, but in 47 years of driving I have never totaled a car or had one stolen.

This is an essential video that you are putting out... People have to make some extremely big changes right now... I've heard people say they don't want to leave family. They don't want to leave their church but oh my gosh my father and his family left Norway... across an ocean with amsterdam idea how they were going to live.. My dad did not speak English until he was 13... They got some land and they became farmers.
EXCELLENT! And growing your own food is much healthier than eating store bought that sat in the truck for miles. It's picked before it's ripe, is not organic, and often lacks nutrients. Farming is #1. I think we all should only work very p/t and then do farming to start a co-op providing for our own food. Can & Preserve food. It sure would cut obesity rates!

My car insurance keeps creeping up, so I raised the deductible a bit in order to lower the premium...not a huge savings but it helps some.

Modern homes are sometimes built to need a lot of heat and a/c. Lots of windows, open plan. And possibly no appropriate windows to put a window unit. Newer construction is like Chernobyl, not built to last lean times.
Anyway good on those people for finding solutions.
I’m coming round to the idea of needing to make more money. It’s a problem. I thought I could frugal everythjng. And I can, but I want more in life now.

Our car is paid off, however when it conks out we will Not be able to purchase a car new or used. We can share daughters car, but mainly be taking bus. I think I said it before about having bus that picks up and drops off at our hose. It costs $2 both ways. Have a bless Sunday everyone 🌺

This is exactly why our pick up truck is from 1996- no electronics so it can be fixed much more swiftly and costs less. It’s just for family work toting- no need to replace it until parts can’t be found.

One of the ways I am thrifty is to take good care of the things I do own. An example is not overloading my washer, tough on the mechanics. Also, I made room for my car in the garage. It’s one of my most expensive purchases and expensive to replace. Love your channel, MM.

In Ontario Canada a working small home have a price range of $450,000- $570,000. Rent usually runs a minimum of $2000. It's insane. Groceries are crazy priced. It's crazy to me that people are wanting to immigrate here, they will be broke the longer they live here.
Free health care costs in the long run, but it may be why people are emigrating.

It is scary out there right now. We are getting priced out in our lifestyle. It’s coming down to just the essentials. I, personally, am afraid to have to go in debt. However, even being out of debt the way prices of cars, home etc. something can upset that apple cart, and place you in debt. CD rates are going down. That was nice to be able to make some passive income, but then you pay income tax on it, so how much did you really earn? Keep praying 🙏
Some people are not in this position because of a lack of planning. The mistake people make most often is the lack of a long term maintenance budget. We saved on a monthly basis for things such as a new room or central air
That way when we needed to replace them we only needed to add a couple of hundred from short term savings instead of using emergency funds.
Me as well! When I paid off my car, I still make a payment as though I have it. It builds up a nice next egg too. I purchase a car infrequently.

My neighbors heater went out three years ago. For the last few years they’ve been saving as much as possible. They have a fire place, small house and with a few space heaters they aren’t in any rush to replace the heater. Making do.
We did the same thing one winter. Our HVAC unit went out, and we didn't have enough to replace it. We used our wood-burning fireplace in our family room, a space heater in my son's bedroom, and an electric blanket on our bed. We live in NW Florida, so winters are cold but not below 0°. By March, we were getting hot, humid weather. We had enough saved to pay for half and put the remaining half on an interest-free for 6 months payment.

Right now we are doing OK but everything is going up and up. We are retired. Insurance more costly now, Health insurance more expensive, our Medicare Part D premium quadrupled, it will now cost approx 1200.00 a year for premiums and medications for my husband. We will have our car paid off in another year and was hoping to save that money but it is going to go towards emergency funds and property taxes (also up) We replaced our central heat and air (we sent 2 years with a few window units) about 6 years ago, approx 10,000. Then in 2020 we were hit with a tornado and a tree through the roof so we did have a new roof (thank you Lord). We are doing everything possible to maintain our property and equipment. If there are any major problems we will just have to "Make do" for now. My son lives close by and we share things when needed to help each other out.
Have to repair one of our cars and it’s almost 2,000. Don’t have that kind of money. Some of the food banks around me consider what you make and I’m worried my family doesn’t qualify but going to try.

I am going to minisplits instead of central air. Not as comfortable, and when I sell the buyers will likely want concessions, but it works for me NOW.
My son put one in his garage so the kids would have a big place to play indoors. It worked great. That was in his previous home, and I think he's considering it for his new home, lol!
For those that cannot afford a car, rental insurance alone can be $40+ a day, more than the cost of the rental sometimes and obviously is required by law. In many states you can get a non-owners car insurance policy at a fraction of the cost of a regular policy, that is what I have, I decided not to own a vehicle, but instead I rent one as needed, the caveat is the rental prices fluctuate around availability. I have found that not owning a car has save me thousands of dollars in maintenance, insurance costs, etc. I also work from home, and most things are within walking distance, or public transit distance, so I don't need a car everyday. I only made this comment because even at the insurance company I called to get my quote on non-owners insurance, the young lady who answered the phone hadn't even heard of non-owners insurance before and no one I tell about it has heard of it either.

I advise the people who need new heat and air to go with a split system. It's both heat and air and a heck of a lot cheaper. I've done the research and that's what I plan to buy for my home because my heat and air broke down.
The top guys (insurance people, water and electric companies) are taking our money and what we love now and in the future, plus working us till death.

Back in the day in the late 80's and 90's when I was getting started a lot of my friends rented apartments with 2-3 people to share expenses. Not many people could afford to get one of their own. And that was when cars were cheaper, and gas was WAY cheaper, cable was cheaper, and no one had cell phones/internet. People would spend money at the bar but no one was buying expensive Starbucks drinks that is for sure.
Everyone was able to achieve a decent life even with social bigotry in place. Now, 2-3 families are buying the homes and sharing them just to get in to home ownership- terrible for them and for the municipality system overloads! Yet, I can’t blame anyone.
Yes! Wendy, I remember those days as well. I was excited to have my own apartment, but certainly didn’t start off with wanting my own home. I didn’t watch a lot of tv because I was going out with friends, working my way through college or working to pay my bills. I did make the mistake of buying an expensive car and had to stay out of college for about a year to get it paid off. Lesson learned from that……. Now, buy Toyota Corolla’s and drive them until they die.
@@monikaw1369 We leased two cars at one point but then decided to just buy 2 old cars with cash. We did that and drove those cars for a long time. Until we could buy nicer ones in cash. It's nice not having the car payment. If people realized how much money they are paying in interest and how much more they could get by not using credit I think it might blow their mind a little bit. Esp. now credit debt has higher rates than it used to.
Now, families are living together by necessity. It's so difficult for young people starting out.
I had to choose what to do with a property sale.. It wasn't much just a little cabin... I decided to pay off my vehicle because if I have to, I can park it in my driveway...put it in "storage" with insurance

Regarding future episodes, I would appreciate seeing an episode regarding when it is time to sell your home vs. renting. I know that the old rule was 40% of your total income, but with the increase in insurance rates, is this even possible now?
I've not heard about that equation. I'm not sure about the tax laws in every state; but, if you don't buy another home, the proceeds from your home can be taxed as income. There are limits if your home is sold for less than a certain amount. I think it's $700,000 in Florida.
@@3TXSisters Yes I am aware of capital gains tax, but sometimes it has to happen if people can not afford to stay in their homes due to property tax increases and high insurance rates.
If replacing a system you should not need new ductwork - but 16-20k is about right to replace the systems
You do need new duct work to be compatible with the new type air con.
@@helenmak5663 the ductwork just moves the air - I just replaced my condenser and air handler...my family's business (4th generation, 90 years) - ductwork is still galvanized metal and returns are "flex" and the runs are based on same calculations - the freon has changed so you need both units (condenser outside, air handler inside) to be compatible but rare to need new ductwork unless it is corroded or was sized wrong in the first place.
My current favorite meat deal now is chicken thighs for either .99/lb or 1.29/lb. I bought a "Too Good to Go" package from a gourmet deli for $4.99. I got about a 3 lb salad of lettuce, roast beef, turkey breast with peppers and small mozzarella balls. Also got a parfait and a tomato and mozzarella salad.

We dropped our $230 a mo. homeowners insurance. Our risk here is wildfires so we bought a home with a steel roof and installed a roof sprinkler on top of the house hooked to the spring. The easiest way to save $ is to drop your homeowners insurance yet it's wise to ensure or try to, that whatever your highest risk is, is greatly reduced
For me, I wouldn't have any peace of mind dropping my homeowners insurance. I understand your trying to mitigate the biggest risk for your home; that's admirable. As I say that, there are so many other things that could happen to your house that insurance might cover. I wish you great success in how you're planning for unforseen damages to your house. Diane
@@jimmiepatrum We have no trees around so there really isn't anything. That's the only natural disaster we could have. I feel it's a risk to pay them. Our last neighborhood, there was a fire and two of our neighbors were not paid by their homeowners insurance company despite their homes burning down. I guess my attitude changed right then. Another thing we are doing is slowly adding Steel to the side of the house as we get it free and he paints it (he's a contractor) so reducing the risk much lower. Anyhow I 100% understand your mindset since I had it for much of my life. Blessings to you

Why do they need to change the duct work? That to me sounds like a scam.
They tried that with us and my husband wouldn’t change it. Found someone that did it without changing duct work.

Planning using and one of things that I'd never planned on before when taking a trip is SHOCKING.. I learned from Clark Howard that you have to check all 4 tires of a rental vehicle and you have to buy special tire insurance because of you or run over a nail the person whose renting the vehicle is responsible... I NEVER KNEW THAT BEFORE THIS WEEK.. It's rare that I would rent a car but in the event. I need To Do that or anyone? I know needs to do, that it's something to plan for.

We learned that when our ex-daughter-in-law and her husband brought our granddaughters for a visit. They had rented a van and got a flat and the tire couldn't be repaired. We were glad to buy the tire for them because they had spent so much to come visit us. I didn't realize they were responsible until they called the rental company to make sure. Crazy!

My parents car insurance went from 179 to 270 a month. They are on a fixed income. Retirement. Things are getting two expensive.

No offense, but when you say make more money, that can be easier said than done. There are currently not a lot of jobs available and a lot of competition for the jobs that are out there. Plus, all of those companies that took out PPP loans are required to advertise a certain amount of jobs to get the loan forgiveness. The problem is the jobs don't exist. So people are sending in resumes for ghost jobs. The available jobs are disappearing.
There are side jobs. The holidays are coming
Maintenance/repairs/replacement must be planned for in the budget if one decides to purchase a home and/or a vehicle. Humans need maintenance/repairs as well. Plan accordingly. And, that plan begins with vocational training and/or college degree so one can earn at a CAREER level rather than at a J.O.B. level. There really is no other way if one wants financial security in retirement. It's a fact of life.

Back in the late 80’s and 90’s I worked 3 part time jobs to be able to schedule around my college classes, also having 2 boys under the age of 5 and my husband who was full time military, also worked a part time job on the weekends so we could stay ahead of the rat race and not get in debt. Do what you have to do to stay ahead ! You can do this !

My car ins has stayed the same for the last 4 years. But we haven’t bought any new or newer cars either. As the value of the cars go down, we also haven’t had any tickets ..: it has stayed the same. Check with more local smaller ins companies. That’s what we did. Always shop around ! Also, get rid of your AAA membership. If you have auto ins, they pay for road side assistance and windshield cracks etc. don’t need that extra insurance.
We don’t have home ins. We don’t have a mortgage on it and instead, we invest that money and fund our own possible emergencies. Think about it… you pay home owners ins and that ins company invests that money for themselves. And after 15-30 years you scale down and sell your home and move into an apt. Do you get any of that ins money back ? Nope. Pay off your mortgage and get rid of your ins and invest that money instead !
If your house burns to the ground, you will wish you had homeowners insurance. This is a dumb move unless you are very rich and can replace it out of pocket.

@@lynnhensley4326 We put a steel roof on our house and a sprinkler system outside hooked to the spring. It's endless water. With our Satellite systems, we can remotely activate it when the fire comes near. Otherwise there is no other risk in our area so no reason to throw away an ongoing $230 a month. Here in California, we are expected to get a 20% increase too so that's when we said enough is enough
@@lynnhensley4326 If you can't eat or stay healthy by going to the doctor it's idiotic to buy homeowners insurance. Do the basic necessities first.
I always enjoy your commen sense advice. I am retired and live on a small income. I almost always purchase things that I need second hand. It is usually a much better deal.

I know my DH went back to work because of the economy.
We’ve had so many medical expenses this year. It’s so frustrating. We just recently found new home owners and car insurance as our home owners almost doubled in one year with no claims, small condo in a safe area.. not sure what is going on.

4 in our family adult group - we use 2 vehicles between us. And public transportation in the city.
There is a FBook group in the town over- they buy meat together. One guy places the warehouse order and everyone pays him directly. It will work until someone whines.
I think that's a good idea, as long as everyone can get the cuts of meat they want. My son buys a portion of a cow and a portion of a hog. He gives my mother cuts that he doesn't want. My mother is thrilled to get free meat.

One of my neighbors just sold their little house for one hundred thousand dollars over asking price. It’s a simple, under one thousand square foot house in an old, working class neighborhood. Sold for over seven hundred thousand dollars.

Im so glad the people you know came up with a solution they could afford for cooling and heating. I am just completely flabbergasted at the asking price for items. My sons and I have used cars that are paid off. Since buying them, we have periodically asked if the car dealers can buy our used cars. And sell us a new one. We say uh, no. Thank you for this video.

I was at least treading water until my job decided to only pay half a paycheck in July, and my home owner's insurance quadruple charged my escrow so my mortgage payment almost doubled until I got it fixed for next month.

Interesting video. I haven’t seen a house for $300,000 in over ten years. The quotes for HVAC are outrageous. You shouldn’t need duct work for central air going out. Another option is a mini split. You could get a unit for a whole house for about $5,000 and install it yourself.

I live in a small town in Texas. There are many homes here that are well under $300.00. Lots of places here in Texas are still reasonable.
I have never had central Air. I have always had window units, ugly, but it works. Buying a car at auction, will get rid of car payments. My brother did this all of his life, just to name a few ideas. Also, for property taxes check to see if you qualify for a homestead exemption act, I did, and it cut my taxes down by $1100.
