Metallica
Holier Than Thou
Peoria, IL, USA
1991.10.29
High Quality
---------------------------
A video from my old account (metallicafx), originally uploaded in September 2006. Couldn't believe no one reuploaded this one so I thought why not? Metallica playing Holier Than Thou live first time ever, it had been rehearsed before but this was its official live premiere. James forgets the lyrics on some parts because at the time the song was rarely played despite of the rehearsals and james was obviously drunk as hell.
Enjoy!

3:18 perfect timing
3:03 Jason goes in Cliff mode
Everybody saying this is garbage, recognize that this is savage and rad. Don't be gettin all wussed out with this "Oh he sung like he didn't care." I don't know that I've ever seen Hetfield sing like he doesn't care during this period.
Metallica were the absolute undisputed heavyweight champions of the rock world at this point, so do not insult what needs only praise.
sixalarm
World's just full of sour grapes mate....
From a professional standpoint yes Hetfield did oversing quite a bit, it doesn't take a talented ear to hear that he was sharp on many parts, I understand that the way he was singing this was bound to happen but you'd think he'd correct it after the first time(epiglottal distortion making metal voices as heavy as they are take a lot of air, if you don't compress your voice to make it sound distorted you go sharp and sometimes your voice just blows out, not completely of course), but this was an issue that could've easily been solved on stage just by compressing the throat, yet james kept doing it, from a professional standpoint, James was singing incorrectly(it wasn't terrible though)
judge not lest ye be judged yourself!
@@xXGamingFactorXx what 20 million records sold band are you in Nick?
When you tour for 3 years with 3+ hour shows you gotta try to preserve your voice. Not to mention his technique was extremely damaging. I don't even think he was holding back, I think a considerable amount of damage had already been done (because he was over exerting). By 92, his voice was completely different.
Pretty Ironic people are criticizing on Metallica's HOLIER THAN THOU live performance
@KillaCrossover318 holier than thou is about people nitpicking and criticising you for the tiniest things
heheh, nice one :)
fucking good bass tone ! jason is a beast !
dont disrespect master of puppets or kill em all this is real metal
not norvegian black metal or shit like this
Grimeyhoob
Norwegian black metal is good? ... well everyone is entitled to their opinions I guess.. but norwegian black metal? jeez..
underrated song....maybe the most so on the album.
So. Much. Hair.
Excellent song holier than thou Metallica 1990s live
Back when Lars could keep tempo
Look at the quebeck magnetic performence of holier. He actually kept his tempo there aswell
Lay off Lars. Drummer for the biggest band ever... End of story
watch some 2019 footage
I love those drums
They remind me when lars was good
That awesome little moment of fame for Jason 3:03 Freakin Brutal
I always thought that bass/drum part should have lasted a few more bars
Actually, for the people saying that he had a lyrical mistake, on the Holier than Thou (Rough Demo) version, that was the lyric.
Thank you!! I’m tired of people shitting on this performance my god, they don’t understand.
A song released before the I-phone would come to define an entire generation worldwide. Simply stunning.
The real world premiere of this song was on October 12, 1991. Day On The Green
One of the best metal songs every made
3:03 lol awesome
awsome song, it is wierd that its been played so few times live
3:09 Oh ____, Jason is getting all the attention, and he's a bassist. Bassists aren't allowed to get attention. I better go walk in front of him! - Kirk
Was thinkin that aye
You've clearly never heard of Rush, where the bassist gets almost all the attention.
Actually in Metal the bassist gets a lot of attention.
Kirk isn't really standing in front of Jason, it just looks that way because of the camera angle
Skull this, he was actually standing at an angle to the side of him like a /
Not the premiere. Premiere of this song was Oakland 10-12-1991
That bass solo... yeaaahhh!
I was there!
debgibsonfan bet u were
This song is one of the underrated mettalica songs
They used to be so faster and heavier. It's awesome! I love Metallica old days live.
Actually......these days? They play it faster than this
No, they doesn't. In fact, they are playing too slow since a few years...
@@CBRHurricane6 is this a joke?
This is HELL man!
This is NOT the first live performance of “Holier Than Thou”
this is piceless man u r so lucky that u recordered it so well ^^
sorry for my spelling XP
James forgot the lyrics...
For me the best!!!
🤘🤘🔥🖤
I luv, don't give a fuck wut they say!!!
F****** right!!!
See i like this version a lot, when you have Kirk Hammett playing the solo accurately and him playing that little solo during the last verse too (Y)
It's a premiere they are drunk as hell they probably don't know where they are and i think so what? this is life and theyre human like most of us... also would love to see this performance in better quality
Opening night of the Black album tour, in Peoria, a 10 minute drive from my house and I was only 8 years old so I couldn't go. I wish I had cooler parents lol
So sad
This isn't the premiere of this song, they played this at the first show of the tour in Oakland, CA '91 they soon dropped it but only played it early in the tour.
What a mess performance for metallica, james forgets lyrics and sung like he couldnt give a toss, kirk coming in with the bridge solo in the chorus, the band didnt rehearse for sure for this song, jason was out of place at times..surprisingly lars kept the drums as to studio version lol. Credit goes to lars..
If I'm not mistaken they're quiiiiiiiiiiite drunk, so... credit for all to keep playing lol
Enrique Macías that's usually when they play rare songs is when they are drunk lol
still better than anything theyve sounded like since newsted left
I dont think they enjoyed playing it. The live premiere in oakland 91 is much better
@@sadsadasdsadasdsadas cuek
Great filming skills dude. Half of lars drums all the time..
how is this not an awesome performance? other than hetfield's vocal fuck up it sounds like vintage Metallica. GODS
Hey look guess who's playin tonight... TAMA! nice going lars

Lukeamania ua-cam.com/video/JR38SOWI9Xs/v-deo.html
it does not premiere
jason is the fucking God!!! xD
i love how they played this song like 10 times and then just stopped after they realized it wasnt that popular of a song
:D
James fucked up the lyrics. They stopped playing this song soon after. I dont Think they enjoyed playing it.
daveruda they played it for years after! what you on about?
They did?! I Think they stoppled playing this in 1991 and only played it again for 2012 black album shows.
They Play it on Fan Can in 2008
They played it in 1991 and did not play until 2004 again. Strange considering Holier was one of the frontrunner songs before the album was released. But it oviously did not work that well live.
@@nebula71me
Quebec Magnetic 2009

Once more crap comes out on these comments again... why don’t you worry bout yourself insteadddd!
I love this song, but they should have rehearsed it more before playing it live. I love metallica but I have to admit james screwed up the lyrics bigtime
Megadeth Should Watch Metallica Playing to See Who's The Real Metal Band...

James Sounds like 2009 here lol

@@Sm0k3W33dEveryDayS He does sound pretty much the same as in Quebec Magnetic. listen to it and come back.
Jan Solo honestly I think this is because of the sound quality because you can here that his scream are way More powerful on this
@DemonsoulCR I Like Megadeth But 'Tallica is Much Better :)
