You almost have to consider the possibility that every single car will start to look more and more charismatic and charming once it gets through the 15 years or so of looking dated. Makes you look at the current cars and cars of 10 years ago or so and wonder. My dad had three successive Renault 21 Savanna estates from the late 80s into the mid 90s and I have a real affection for them. Thanks for sharing this. Subscribed!
Great video of a lovely car John! Been looking forward to this one since you talked about it on Twitter. A nice trip down memory Lane after growing up with these in the family .
Thanks Nick. 😊 More coming next week so there will be another trip down memory lane. Make sure to share the channel so it can keep growing. Thank you 😊
Fantastic episode John! My dad had a 1987 Renault 21 Savanna 7 seater, it was the GTS 1.7 petrol version, it was then replaced with a 1989 facelift Savanna 7 seater 1.7, it was interesting that electric windows and central locking were an option on that model
The trim levels were odd at times but I would have assumed the GTS came with front electric windows. The Savanna is incredibly rare now, they were all just driven into the ground as a work horse. Make sure to share the channel to any car Facebook groups or WhatsApp groups your in. Would be great to keep it growing for the Irish audience 👍
Hi , saw my first one yesterday outside the the Midland American Car Show in Kilbeggan . 1990 ,black ,immaculate ,full leather etc . so there’s at least one more in Ireland . As retro as they come . Led me to this video and what a coincidence you just uploaded this weekend. Great video ,keep up the good work 👍🏼
@@danielobrien5112 yep, I'd love that. The TI was only available for about 12 months before the facelifted TXi arrived. My email is johnosgarage@gmail.com . Thanks 😊
I've been looking forward to this one John. You are getting hold of some fantastic cars with this and the 25. I've been a life long Renault fan but I wasn't aware of the Ti. I actually have a car design magazine from 1986 with a feature on the R21.
@@JohnsGarageIreland I look.fkrward to.that. Mine is getting out to a few local events at the moment but nothing to far away since it's trip to Belgium.
Great video John, £17k converts to €44k in today's money according to CSO calculator which I'm surprised at as it would be reasonably priced into today's market. Great to see rare cars like this reviewed.
Thats brilliant. I would have thought it was slightly more as the R21 was massively expensive when launched, think it was £3k more than the R18 it replaced. Thanks Cormac
John, brilliant the best video yet, what a fantastic unicorn this is - I simply cannot recall when I saw one last! I remember a guy a work who chose a 21 Savanna after a very bad Montego Estate experience. I hope you coming across the pond to the festival of the unexceptional in July as it will be full of these rarities?
My mums brother had a Renault 21 he had many problems with the electric cooling fan there was a recall and fan got replaced again and it failed again i think in total it had either 3 or fans or it could have been the switch that turns the fan on apart from that it was reliable .
Good to see a surviving Irish Ti. Probably the only one left. These had a small market because of the 2litre road tax. Most people willing to pay that bought a 25 instead. I think the Ti was only on sale for a short time . They weren't around at the launch in '86 and by '89 they had been replaced by the phase 2 Txi. Anorak fact: Renault never used the Ti badge on any other model either before or since. I wonder did BMW complain about it being used on the 21?
The dealership I worked at sold just one 21 Ti. The guy who bought it traded it in a few years later for a TXi. Again it was the only one sold. Would love to know if either of these survived. Very unlikely though. The TXi was last owned in Galway.
@@mickmolloy6594 Reason I ask about the TXi is that there was one fir sale locally with reg 90KY but it was very rotten when I looked at it. Just wondering did someone save it. Looked a nice car in its day. Prices were very strong though, started off £3000 more than a run out R18 in 1986
They were indeed quite popular. Dad's of two classmates in primary school had them & a colleague of my own father had one as a company car. Time marches on etc two of those gents have passed away. The savanna was indeed huge, remember about 12 of us being dropped home in it ☺
SUBED There ya go now you have 700 subers My next door neighbour had the 21 Hatchback (Liftback) with Turbo alloys in 1989 it certainly was different in a sea of farmers Toyotas and Nissans Lol Nice review
Thanks Ruairí fir pushing it to 700! They were a lovely car at the time, very solid looking but they seemed to disappear soon after the Laguna arrived apart from the Savanna which stayed available until 96. Male sure to share the channel and we can keep it growing.
I have *exactly* this car - complete with red pinstripe 😁. Can you please ask the owner if he's had to fix intermittent rev counter and headlamp telltales? What's the secret? 🤣
Wicklow (home) and Oxford (work) and the R21 is on UK plates. I found her in Cambridgeshire. Another rolling restoration. I can't find any sunroof "expert" who is prepared to tackle the (jammed solid and leaking) sunroof so it's sealed with bathroom silicone while I try to figure out how to pull it out and dismantle it. And the rev counter has a mind of its own. Sometimes it gets out of bed if the car's been driving for an hour....
Early on in our relationship the gear linkage dropped off the bottom of the gear stick. So I was stuck in first gear. I could still go anywhere I wanted: just very slowly 😂😂😂
SUnroof would be slide only, not tilt & slide if its a phase 1 - pedantic I know! Unusual boot spoiler too, UK Ti's had a little lip spoiler, this one looks much bigger.
Just the sort of pedantic I need! Mine is jammed solid and I can't figure out how it's meant to move. You reckon its first movement is sliding? Any thoughts on how to remove it. None of the present day sunroof "experts" will touch it 🤣
I had one of those! It was brilliant.
I fondly remember the Renault 21 savanna 7 seater estate here in the UK, growing up in the 1990s.

Good to hear John. Renault are criminally under rated in my view

Great video John, nice to see something unusual. If the Mercedes limo in the background is yours I would love to see a video on it.
Thanks Paddy. The Merc limo I think is sold and its a little dirty. As its not mine I'm not sure the owner wants to show it yet
Lovely car. I wouldn't say Renault have come a long way in comfort though, only Citroen seems to have recovered their USP in the comfort stakes.
Jesus I haven't seen one of these in years.
This one is in regular use. A proper rare car.

My uncle had problems too. He had a new one in 1990, a hatchback and the fan would stay on after any length of a drive and could kill the battery.
Have those alloys got no hole in the middle? I’ve heard of that on Peugeots but not Renault
Zooming in on the pictures I have it seems to have a pop out piece
