    Alone Again, Naturally Lyrics
    [Verse 1]
In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promised myself to treat myself
    And visit a nearby tower
    Standing at the top
    Will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to whoever
Just what it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in a lurch, in a church
    Where people saying
"My God that's tough, she stood him up
    No point in us remaining"
"We may as well go home"
As I did on my own
    Alone again, naturally
    [Verse 2]
    To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to, who wouldn't do
The words I was about to say
And as if to knock me down
    Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
    Cut me into little piеces
    Leaving me to doubt
All about God and His mеrcy
For if He really does exist
Then why did He desert me
    In my hour of need?
    I truly am indeed
    Alone again, naturally
    [Flute solo]
    [Verse 3]
    Looking back over the years
And what ever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
    And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand, why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start with a heart
    So badly broken
    Despite encouragement from me
    No words were ever spoken
    When she passed away
I cried and cried all day
    Alone again
    Alone, naturally

I like it! Gilbert O'Sullivan's voice is so iconic and so integral to how one expects this song to sound. But here comes someone with an entirely different full throat open style of singing instead of Gilbert O'Sullivan's tighter more nasal style, and she knocks it out of the park. Having a floutist is a nice touch for the break. What a terrific cover!

Such a peculiar song. As a 9 year old this one (sad and brutal as it is) burrowed itslef into my subconscious - as if "climbing to the top, to throw myself off" was par for the course. The golden age of AM radio fed us some strange and wonderful voodoo.

One of the greatest melodies ever written in popular music. This version is just wonderful, and even though it misses the middle eight, it still feels absolutely complete. Proof that great songwriting only needs to be a chordal instrument coupled with a great vocal, lyrics and melody, and that relentless on beat groove pushing it along perfectly.
    I love this so much.
