    I have watched the evolution of the Revolution since the first generation and have wanted one since I first heard of it. My wife just got me the gen 5 for Christmas. Just did my vinegar bath and cleanup today. Start my build tomorrow. I can't tell you how excited I am to add this to my shop. Thank you for making such an awesome machine achievable for average joe. Talking about thick metal warping under heat, my great grandad was a shipbuilder in the old London Docks over 100 years ago. He worked until he was 85, lived until 96 and loved to tell stories of how they did things back - then fascinating stuff. They used to bend the enormous steel beams in the big ocean going vessels using relatively small coal fires they built on the steel beams. The old timers would work out where to build the fires exactly to bend the steel exactly in the right place and the right amount. So no surprise that welding warps a 12 inch square 3/8" steel plate

  • @timberanvil3788

    Welp I just began this rodeo this evening! So far so good - got the base frame welded up within 0.5* of 90 and the bold spins and the plate sits flat. Then welded the receiver tubes together. So far so good! Biggest challenge was my welder which I've had for 11 years now is actually underpowered for 3/8" thick material so in order to get any penetration, I had to preheat with a propane torch but that worked well enough...like he said...ain't building a skyscraper...just a grinder.

    Hey Brother!!! So at 34minutes & 42seconds, what you called a "ball end joint thingy" in the aviation sector (when i was in the military) we called them lollipops. They were used on all of our flight control cable ends as well as within the Hydraulic system on it's cables and boost packages! Just a bit of useless information for ya, hope all is going well for you and yours!! So awesome you're already up to a generation 5 on this grinder, that's absolutely amazing!!!! I'm still trying to save the cash to buy one, you know how having kid's is! As soon as you save money for something, it's needed for something else. Someday though. Someday!! God bless Brother!!!

    The design just keeps getting better and better!!! Glad I waited :-) Also, you can get Penetrol in CA if you know where to look (hint, it wasn't banned for marine use) But you know what's even easier to find, and cheaper??? Just go get some boiled linseed oil and wipe it on! Penetrol is just oil plus Cocamide DEA. Want it to sink in deeper and last longer and look even better? Heat up the metal you're applying it to, brush on, wipe off, let cool, and buff out. Raw metal look, strong finish, no rust.

    While I applaud the constant evolution of the Revolution grinder, each generation pushes the price further away from that of a viable alternative as an entry level kit for the casual DIYer. Don't get me wrong, I'm still going to buy one but this extends my already excruciating 3-4 month timeline by 4--6 weeks. Again, I applaud the constant innovation. It shows that you truly want to put your name on the best product you can possibly make, keep up the good work.

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  Рік тому +4

      The way I look at it is I reducing the amount of tooling needed and that offsets the cost difference. Also you can buy the kit in parts (very soon) and then you can just get the plate steel (for instance) and machine the rest of you like. Still a lot of options out there to save money. The cheapest way to do it is to buy the plans and hit the scrap bin and make the parts from scratch. Still very possible. I will say time is money and we have traded some of that valuable resource to make the kit better. I appreciate your support as always. I hope you build one soon in any capacity. Cheers! 🙏🏼

    Very cool build and design. A few years ago I started cutting out all the parts for one of these. I didn’t need it but it looked like a fun build. I already have a sweet little dc motor and controller so why not. One thing I really hate is cutting out steel. I have access to all the free scrap I want up to an inch thick. Stainless even if I wanted. This already being cut out makes me want it. I would only have to cut out a different motor mount. Maybe I’ll get out what I started, nah. I really hate cutting steel. 😮. Maybe I’ll order yours.

    I just purchased a DIY bundle. For the time and money that it saved me it's well worth the 700 bucks. However I am one to give an HONEST opinion/comment. The 1st 2 vertical support beams are so far my ONLY complaint. One was cut perfect however the other one was cut and ground very crooked up top where the radius is. I would have gladly waited one more week just to have that little bit of quality control. Because either way $700 is still $700!
    Other than that I'm halfway through the build and it is looking pretty damn awesome. I'm not sure if maybe there was somebody new at the shop but regardless that crooked cut is there and it bothers me however it does not affect the main bolt that runs through them everything lines up just fine.

    @42:55 you might consider redesigning the front plate that holds the belt so that it sits directly centred on the rotation axis of the entire machine. This means the platform that will sit in front of the machine that holds the jobs to be ground will always remain centred to the belt .this can be handy if you are using a jog that holds the job being ground . It currently appears that the front plate holding the belt rotates around the central axis of the machine and hence the belt moves off centre as the main unit is rotated

    This thing is absolutely the bomb, man. I've got my old grinder and forge up for sale, just bought the apollo, and hope to pull the trigger on the Gen 5 next month. One question on motors. I see the links on the resources page to 3 choices, but I'm motor-dumb. theres not a huge difference in prices and they all appear the same with regard to hp and rpm and I can do either 110 or 220 in my shop, so I guess I'm not sure which one to buy

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  Рік тому +1

      There isn't a big difference in those motors. We just link to them because sometimes one will go out of stock and what not. I have a video on running a 110 VFD and a 220 VFD. Both work great on any of those motors. 110 can bog down if you really push hard on the belt since you lose 1/2 HP going to 110. But it is negligible. Regardless the motor stays the same.

    I’m curious… the flat platen is welded to the 90* brackets but I was under the impression the platen will need to be replaced from time to time? I’ve seen some grinders, like the Bader for example, which I believe have a replaceable platen and the platen is a harder steel like 4130 or something versus just regular cold rolled?

  • @ThomasShue

    Why are you spot welding the seams vs welding the full length of the seam (even if overlapping stitch welds are needed to complete the seams).

    Just a point information, and you probably already know. If you mount aluminum to steel, it will cause something called electrolysis. You might want to look at making the tracking hinge plates in steel.

    Maybe the question is dumb, but why no one makes a grinder that tilts an opposite direction, pointing the engine spindle down? That would let lower the center of mass and make it more compact

      I think because of the weight of the motor. It could be done but the motor will want to pull it around the other way.

    Metal working noob here, I have a question - you talk about cleaning the steel with mill scale, and "hitting them with a DA". I'm not familiar with that term. And also thanks for the rec on Penetrol

      A DA sander is a 'dual action' sander. Essentially an oscillating sander really.

    Why not 2024 aluminum, or 7075, they’re both stronger… Btw aircraft grade only means it’s been chemically more accurate and tempered so there’s no stress in the billet, and less likely to have any micro voids. I’ve learned a lot over the years as a machinist

    I love your videos House! Gonna start on my 2x72 this weekend, cant wait. Gathering everything up this week and parts should be in from amazon by thursday! All of the parts i got from you got here fast and look good. I saw that the hinges are sold out when bought a la carte so im making those myself. i was looking at the new instructions for the Gen 5 build and it seems like maybe some dimensions are off on the Hinges page (23) i have checked and rechecked and even waited to get home to my digital caliper but some of them are right others are not. Which makes me think i printed to scale correctly, so i dont think its that. Im sure it doesnt matter to the build for the bigger picture right? Just need to make sure that the center hole is drilled uniformly so no big deal but i guess im somewhat asking if im right or wrong, and if so just a heads up!

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  Рік тому +1

      Yeah the only critical dimension is where the hole center is. The rest is just aesthetic. 👊🏻

    Would a Hobart 100 get enough penetration to do a solid job? It says it can only weld up to 3/16" material and the base plate is 3/8", I'm new to welding and don't know how strict these requirements are. There's a big price jump to go bigger and ya boys on a budget. Thanks!

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  10 місяців тому +1

      The work around for welding thicker steel is to preheat it with a torch. Mapp gas works great for this. It's not the most efficient way of welding but the Hobart 100 should do it with pre-heat.

      I have a larger welder and I still only used about 85 amps to weld my grinder together, and I had to cut the motor mount plate off because I welded it on backwards and I was getting plenty of penetration!!! I’d say around 100 amps is about all you need for this project!!

    Hi Brian, couple questions :). I'm sure it's fine but just checking, is sandblasting all the parts fine too? I know there is some material removal, so just making sure. Also, on the motor plate weld, you didn't call out any extra warping concerns (that I noticed) in the video. With four plug welds like that, is it a good idea to really lock that one down too? probably is, but I heard you in the beginning "do what I do" so that's my plan :).

    • @HouseMadeUS
      @HouseMadeUS  Рік тому +1

      Hi Jeff, yes, you can sandblast all the parts that is no problem. Also, if you do not clamp down the motor plate like I did in the video, you can get warping. So make sure you clamp everything down and let it cool before you remove the clamps. Also, I like to just check to see if there's any curvature to the plate before I weld it and then use that as my guide to correct while welding.
