    Absolutely nothing wrong with leftovers, poor or not poor, it’s responsible use of food and not creating more waste

      T M me too that is why I've had food insecurities as when I was a kid there was some times where the cupboards were bare and the fridge had empty spots now my fridge is never empty which can be a problem as well.

    I love leftovers! In fact I often make enough food so that we can eat it the next day, and if I can get away with it, I dump a can of tomatoes in it and we have it a third day! Who doesn't love leftovers?!! Cheap and easy!

    I started a 2 week meal rotation. So when week 2 ends, I just start again with week 1. I have it posted on my fridge and will probably use it for 6 weeks and get bored and make a new 2 week rotation with new foods on it. It makes life a little easier than trying to make a unique dinners for 25 nights in a month. This way I'm only making like 12 different meals and only have to have ingredients for those 12 meals which simplifies my shopping too.

    Planning on buying a deep freeze this year. Would love to have 3. One for beef, one for pork, one for chicken and an upright for fruit and veggies. Christine don't forget to adjust your canning time for your altitude. Add 10 minutes for 5000 above sea level.

    Not trying to be snarky or mean-spirited in any way: Could you organize your freezers and have a fruit/veg freezer and a meat freezer? Things tend to get lost if they're all jumbled together and it'd be easier to find stuff if you divide and conquer. Have a good day Christine!

    • @FrugalFitMom
      @FrugalFitMom  5 років тому +4

      Ideally, YES! I've always wanted to do something like that but never found the time. I'm having a hard time keeping up with the laundry, let alone freezer organization. Hopefully when they are emptier I can do that. :)

    • @melaniehomburg3366
      @melaniehomburg3366 5 років тому

      It doesn't have to be 1 big project though - I hate big projects. I'd rather work 2 minutes a day on something for a month than sit down and try to hammer through everything all at once. All ya gotta do is every time you open your freezer take a bag or 2 of fruit to the other freezer or vice versa - which I'm also working on organizing my own food storage. Just trying to be helpful, ain't trying to preach. You do you. I'm a work in progress as well.

      kelly vasquez me too I've done that a challenge basically all summer of eating low spend and not buying a lot of stuff for the freezer and I keep on eating stuff from the freezer and it makes a big batch of something and I end up having to freeze leftovers so I'm circulating the stuff in the freezer but I haven't even seen the bottom and my freezers too deep for me to really get to the bottom of a lot of effort LOL

    I have a meal for each day for 3 whole months. Feeding, my husband, myself, and 3 little boys (5,4,2). Im Italian, I naturally cook for a huge family, I did try to cook small and never works, learnt to cook from my grandmother and now it’s just her and my grandfather she still cooks for an army. I always freeze any leftovers as extra lazy day meals, or if they are also dog friendly the dogs will have it.
    I can’t stand wasted food. Drives bananas.

    Loved your freezers! I need to purchase one though not sure where I'd put it. Guess that comes first. I've been checking on FB freezer sales and so far the prices are very close to new prices, so I'll keep an eye out. We live in a very tiny home with carport so not sure where I'll keep it. Since our fridge is also very small, freezer space is limited :( What we have here is a dilemma!

    I don't "meal plan" per say. Life happens too much & my plans go out the window. Even weekly plans get tossed due to life. Some weeks day to day plans get tossed which is frustrating.
    So my planning tends to be based off what fresh produce I can find at the store for an acceptable price. Or what we have in the pantry that's getting old.
    Some plans are based on I don't want to cook or clean pots & pans for a few days so I make a big batch of soup, spaghetti or lasagna or something & eat that for 3-4 days. Speaking of which, I need to wash my pot finally. (Last week was a I don't want to cook or clean & we had pasta that needs using week - 2 birds, 1 stone!)
    I want a second fridge or freezer...but then I remind myself I only "need" it for like 2 weeks of the year. I would waste so much food with freezer burn or produce getting forgotten so I make do with our fairly good sized fridge. I don't like telling myself no on a deal for food, but I know we don't need more of whatever yet. (Unless it's like 90% off...I will MAKE room then.)

    I would have loved to see the meals made, like the catfish and the exotic meats (Elk, Moose, etc.). And nothing wrong with leftovers. I love leftovers! As a single person, I portion my meals when I go out and generally end up with 1-2 servings I can eat on a different day. I do the same thing at home, it's hard to cook just 1 portion, so I make 2-4 and eat them. Of course, I am the type of person who doesn't mind eating the same thing for multiple meals.

    I don't meal plan period. My youngest is about to leave for college so I'm gonna seriously try and do it when he's gone. My husband is the self proclaimed leftover eater. He will eat almost anything actually. One of my daughters never would eat leftovers. Some things are better the next day or two, like lasagna. TFS.

    This is so me I have a 6 foot freezer and two fridges and I have lots of food in my pantry and on my shelves in the basement. I've done a low spend June and July and I'm doing pretty much hardly spend August as I want to eat up the stuff in my fridge before we go away near the end of the month. in June I cut my 800 to $900 grocery budget to $200 and in July I cut my budget to 400-450 I believe instead of my regular budget the extra money I gave back to Hubby to put on debt period in August since one of my paydays for grocery money will be while we are away we will use that money to buy stuff away and other pay I will only be buying things like cat food and cat litter coffee and cream just stuff to tie us till the end of the month and just keep on using stuff as my garden is growing lots of veggies faster than we were eating

    After you make your list of "products" available, do you go through your mental recipe list to create your recipe calendar, do you google recipes, or what? Where do you get your inspiration for your recipes? I try to "cook from the freezer" too, but I end up creating a list of grocery items that's nearly as long as if I had just created my recipes list from scratch. Thanks!

    • @FrugalFitMom
      @FrugalFitMom  5 років тому +1

      It's a little bit of both. I mostly use my mental list, but if I draw a blank I pull some of my favorite cookbooks or "the book". which is a handwritten journal of my favorite recipes I've collected over the years.

    Left-over haters don’t take into consideration, we let things marinade to absorbs & disperse flavor.
    Left-overs are just a little longer marinade time.
    Now freeze your leftovers, put it in another dish next time & pass it off as new. Ta Da!!!!
