Bill Walsh was right stating, "If Jerry & Jimmy think they're gonna have the same success without each other, they're wrong". 26 years later neither has had the same success.
It ended up being true. Switzer was good really in 1994 & 1995 with the Cowboys before they lost to Carolina in the Divisional round in 1996 & went 6-10 in 1997. Parcells tried to get them back to the Super Bowl & Jason Garrett tried a couple times or so to get them there, but they ended up not getting even to the NFC Championship game. Jimmy Johnson ended up going to the Miami Dolphins and basically went out with a whimper as Jacksonville beat Miami in Marino's last game as Dolphins QB in January 2000 by a final score of 62-7. I think that was Jimmy Johnson's last game as a head coach as well. So, Bill Walsh ended up being right after all. These teams were so loaded it came down to individual superstars to push one over the other. Look at the legends that played for both clubs - Charles Haley, Ken Norton, Jr., and Deion Sanders. Absolute gamesmanship between two of the most storied teams in football and two of the owners with the deepest pockets. 80-95 was probably my favorite era of football.
Damn You missed so verrrrrrrry gooooood football that was the superbowl game when they use to face off in the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME everyone knew winner automatically would win the superbowl that's the reason the NFL started scheduling these kind of games in the middle or near the end of the season so both teams would be at best heading into the playoffs like how they used to put the Pat's vs Colts or Brady vs Manning in late November
Giving away Haley and when their triplets starting consistently delivering...Smith, Irvin, Aikman...that's when they took the throne. The NFC Championship Game...I remember it like it was yesterday. I was so sick. I was probably one of few kids in NJ, a Giants die hard area that was a Niners fan. My stepfather was a Cowboys fan. It was one of the few times I actually felt sick after that loss. In SF. Didn't go away until they won the SB between theirs and signed Deion.
+Rubin Turner: You're from NJ, I'm from Texas!! Born and raised, and still live here. And I'm a Niners fan...always have, always will. But I hear you buddy....I too felt sick after that loss in '92 and it didn't go away after that '94 SB. To this day, I feel that this loss is the biggest loss in Niners history, even more so than a few years prior when Craig fumbled and they lost to the Giants and failed to three-peat.
I’m a Jersey Boy too, and also a die hard Niners Fan who remembers this like yesterday. Sick ain’t even the half of it! I’m down South Jersey, tho, in Eagles Country.
CastleBravo......1991 NFC Championship Game between the Giants and 49ers was a beautiful contest and was more significant because it de-railed the train that was the 49er dynasty. the first meeting that season between the 2 teams saw the 49ers win 7-3 in a defensive masterpiece. Leonard Marshall turned Joe Montana into Humpty Dumpty. Erik Howard destroyed any hope Roger Craig had of making the Hall Of Fame when he caused that fumble that LT recovered. Gary Reasons' run for 30 yards on the fake punt return when the 49ers had 10 men on the field. The 49er front office should have never let Bill Walsh retire. Seifert wasn't cut from the same cloth.
To me, as a Cowboys fan, the most interesting tidbit in this doc, is Jimmy asking Deion to not forget about him when it came time to choosing his destination in 1994. We have heard since from Jimmy that he got bored in places, and would have left Dallas, maybe even as soon as he ended up doing. What he said to Deion, on the sidelines of his second Superbowl win, in what was his LAST game as Cowboys head coach, disproves all of that. He wouldnt have said that to Deion if he hadnt planned on coming back ATLEAST that next year, so whatever happened at that celebration dinner with Jerry, was the reason he left big D, and in my opinion, what was to be the greatest dynasty in NFL history. Man, it hurts as a Cowboys fan, because I think we threepeat in 1994 if Jimmy stays, and end up winning four in a row when we beat Pittsburgh the year after. Jerry DID fire him in my opinion now. Jimmy agreed to it, but he didnt quit. Such a waste. It always pisses me off when you see situations like that, where LIFE IS GREAT, and dumb egos cause men to take it for granted, blow up something beautiful, and NEVER achieving the same success as they had together. A lot like great rock bands splitting up, and ending up playing at State Fairs, because they were nowhere near as good as solo acts. And what have we received as Cowboys fans since Jimmy was run out of town, with a LOADED roster? One Superbowl win where we really didnt play well enough to win, if not for Neil O Donnell gifting us the championship with two awful throws, and almost THIRTY EFFING YEARS of mediocrity.
My family and I moved to America in the early 80s to the Bay Area. From that point on when we learned about football we hated the cowboys and still do. 49ers forever.
Wow. What a great time that was to be a fan of football. I remember being seven years old watching these games as a Cowboy fan, and having great respect for the Niners.
Alot of young people don't even know the early 70's 49ers with John Brodie at QB were very good and lost to the Cowboys in the NFC title game 2 years in a row.
The Niners lost to the Cowboys in three straight playoffs. The NFC Championship games in 1970 & 1971 and the divisional playoff in 1972. After the 1972 loss, the Niners weren't relevant for almost a decade.
I'm going to bring up something most of us have forgotten about that unbelievable 1994 season. FOX started broadcasting NFC games that season. The broadcast crews for FOX and NBC did a joint broadcast during the games, where the pregame crews talked to each other about their respective games and the pending Super Bowl. I don't know what it was about that, but there was something so magical about that segment.
From 92 thru 95. These 2 teams were so far above the rest of the league. And if it wasn't for 2 games. The 94 nfc title game and the 95 playoff game the 49ers lost to Green bay. Dallas probably would have won 4 superbowls in a row. And both these teams would have faced each other 4 straight times in the Nfc championship game. They dominated the entire league for 4 straight years. That's amazing
This is the best rivalry even if it’s a younger rivalry compared to the packers vs bears. Easily the 49ers and cowboys have the biggest fanbases outside of their states, and they both have 5 Super Bowls. Hard to argue against that and the fact that they have two beautiful uniforms. 🔶🔴🏉
I assume he's narrating somebody else's words; he's not reading as "Sam Elliot" he's just the *voice* they chose (likely because of his status as an actor famous for being in westerns and playing... wait for it, Cowboys).
I am a forty plus year 49er fan. I have to give a ton of credit to the Cowboys. We made a major mistake trading Haley to them, but the key was all the draft picks from the Walker trade and using them as well as they did. It was one hell of a rivalry.
Fun Fact. Charles Haley absolutely despised Steve Young (Haley was a Montana guy) even when they were teammates on the niners. So looking back, I can only imagine how much joy he felt teeing off on Steve Young as a Cowboy during that rivalry.
The Cowboys and 49ers rivalry in the 90’s is very similar to the Steelers and Raiders rivalry in the 70’s. I love rivalry’s where two teams are in the top of their prime and completely hate each other. When you think of Cowboys/49ers, you think of Dwight Clark’s catch. When you think Raiders/Steelers, you think of the immaculate reception.
Besides Montana to Taylor to win Super Bowl 23 . Eric Davis pick 6 to start the game was possibly the happiest and excited a human can possibly get ! Thank you E..Davis #25 I will never ever ever Forget that play !!
there really wasn't much parity back then. you pretty much knew in September who was gonna win the Super Bowl. but i tip my hat to the league, as they've done a lot to create as much parity as possible. seems to be working now, as there's usually about 5 teams who are the front runners in todays NFL, as opposed to just 1 or 2 back then.
Wow in that 1994 NFC Championship game the Cowboys turn it over three times in the first quarter and gave the 49ers 21 points in the first quarter alone..... that was just too much to overcome
Richard Carr Cowboys won't even make it that far. Jimmy g will lead the miners to titles though. He's been learning from the goat for a couple years now.
All of these dumb comments and comparisons today's teams don't have the Star power or personalities it's not no rivalry or rekindled rivalry such goofy comments

I was born in 1994, in the midst of the Cowboys dynasty toward its end. I arrived too late to witness the greatness of that time. I became a Cowboys fan through my family, who are all Cowboys fans themselves. I love going back and doing my research and learning about the team’s history through content like this.

Realign the NFL and put them in the same division twice a year baby!
They meet again the rivalry is back
Mark my words we will see these teams plays in the NFC Championship Game again one day.
Aikman defiantly standing in the pocket all covered in mud with his icy cold stare is the definition of a warrior.
With larry allen on no ankle in 94 nfc title game lol even though he was scary enough
One of the rivalries I wish I got to see live. I was born in 94 so I missed it, but I watched enough documentaries to see how exciting it was.
Ready to renew the rivalry for the 2022 playoffs!!! Go Niners!
000000
go niners
Go cowboys
2021 playoffs this is still the 2021 season
I'm born and raised in Oakland and a diehard Giants fan, crazy world.
This is the greatest NFC playoff rivalry of all time!! Its also one of the best NFL rivalries because both are the epitome of great NFL franchises.
Giants-49ers is better
@@TL2354 What the hell rivalry have they had?
@@TL2354put down the pipe
These teams were also both classy when they were clashing for the NFC title. It was a great time in the NFL.
One of the best rivalries in nfl HISTORY
This was the top rivalry of the early 90s. Coming in at second was Bills-Dolphins around this time
The 49ers and cowboys have played each other in the playoffs the last 2 years so the rivalry has been renewed
Seeing this rivalry as a child, all those Sunday's on FOX...These guys were my heroes.
It’s back on
I just wanted to thank my Parents for having me in 1982 so I was able to see this at a age were I remember all of it …Go Niners 💪
Greatest time in NFL and the greatest rivalry during that time.
2022 NFC Championship game - Feckn Calling It - Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers. Rivalry Reignited 🎇🎇🎇🎆🎆🎆💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
Haha that’s crazy I’m thinking the same thing it just feels like it has to happen this year😅😅
I hope so I wanna see this rivalry again
Alot of young people don't even know the early 70's 49ers with John Brodie at QB were very good and lost to the Cowboys in the NFC title game 2 years in a row.
The Niners lost to the Cowboys in three straight playoffs. The NFC Championship games in 1970 & 1971 and the divisional playoff in 1972. After the 1972 loss, the Niners weren't relevant for almost a decade.
True. And then returned the favor in '81, and the Cowboys weren't relevant for the next decade!
@@SFforlife Well Dallas did win the East in 85, and they were in the Championship in 82, and I recall that SF didn't even make the playoffs.
You're not really going to compare 80's Cowboys and the 80's Niners, are you? It's a losing proposition for Dallas fans.
@@jackduncan5442 what? You’re a loser
49ers vs Cowboys!!!!!! it’s backkkkk
This is the best rivalry even if it’s a younger rivalry compared to the packers vs bears. Easily the 49ers and cowboys have the biggest fanbases outside of their states, and they both have 5 Super Bowls. Hard to argue against that and the fact that they have two beautiful uniforms. 🔶🔴🏉
Without a doubt, it’s the best playoff rivalry of all time!
Packers and Bears are a joke. Hasn't been relevant for decades.
Funny when Sam Elliott talks about how its funny when California boys act Texas tuff. Sam you where born in Sacramento!!!!
greengalaxyfire if he’s a Cowboys fan bring from Sac, then he’s a damn traitor
You clearly don’t read sarcasm well, poking fun at himself as a cowboys fan from Sacramento.
Sam is actually a 9ers fan
FALKOR IS HERE Oh I do, and can joke right back...lol
I assume he's narrating somebody else's words; he's not reading as "Sam Elliot" he's just the *voice* they chose (likely because of his status as an actor famous for being in westerns and playing... wait for it, Cowboys).
Watching this before the 49ers and Cowboys this weekend 😤
🥳🥳🥳 LETS GET IT THE DICE WILL ROLL THE SKY WILL ROAR AND 49ERS AND COWBOYS WILL REIGNITE A 40 YEAR OLD RIVALRY.
So, we meet again.
And now they meet again in the playoffs
I am a forty plus year 49er fan. I have to give a ton of credit to the Cowboys. We made a major mistake trading Haley to them, but the key was all the draft picks from the Walker trade and using them as well as they did. It was one hell of a rivalry.
It was what they did with the draft picks.
Charles Haley came back to the Niners about 5 years after he went to the Cowboys
Fun Fact. Charles Haley absolutely despised Steve Young (Haley was a Montana guy) even when they were teammates on the niners. So looking back, I can only imagine how much joy he felt teeing off on Steve Young as a Cowboy during that rivalry.
Greatest short term rivalry in NFL history! Deion knew he interfered, so how did he makeup for it, he joined the Cowboys. What a rivalry!
Irvin pushed off every pass play.🤣🤣
One of the best rivalries ever
Can't wait for this Sunday!!
Colts-Patriots of the 00s doesn't match up to this rivalry. 1990s football is so intriguing
Doesn't match up because the Patriots would always whip the Colts every time.
It was the trifecta of DAL-SF-GB from 1992-98. 1992-94 DAL/ 1995-98 GB. And in both eras, the Niners remained consistent.
It was only a rivalry because of Brady and Manning after those 2 there isn't much
COWBOYS, 49ERS, JOHN MADDEN AND PAT SUMMERAL...FOOTBALL AT ITS BEST ALL TIME !!!
The Deion and Jerry Jones Commercial is one of the BEST EVER!!
I like how CBKevin Smith who was really injured that year played the gipper
Can’t wait for this game this Sunday night
This is one of the strongest narrative arcs in all of NFL history; can NFL Films do one on the Cowboys-Steelers rivalry of the 70's?
The Cowboys and 49ers rivalry in the 90’s is very similar to the Steelers and Raiders rivalry in the 70’s. I love rivalry’s where two teams are in the top of their prime and completely hate each other. When you think of Cowboys/49ers, you think of Dwight Clark’s catch. When you think Raiders/Steelers, you think of the immaculate reception.
I wish this rivalry was still a thing
They're scheduled for 2020 let's get it on

Besides Montana to Taylor to win Super Bowl 23 . Eric Davis pick 6 to start the game was possibly the happiest and excited a human can possibly get ! Thank you E..Davis #25 I will never ever ever Forget that play !!
That’s the best rivalry in NFL, I got to witness the tail end of the rivalry in the 90s, it was indeed a two team league.
there really wasn't much parity back then. you pretty much knew in September who was gonna win the Super Bowl. but i tip my hat to the league, as they've done a lot to create as much parity as possible. seems to be working now, as there's usually about 5 teams who are the front runners in todays NFL, as opposed to just 1 or 2 back then.
Her we are again, 1/13/22. Three days before this rivalry is renewed in the playoffs. Let's gooo!! "How bout them Cowboys!!"
THEY WILL NEVER WIN WITH JERRY JONES AT THE HELM. WHEN WILL YOU LEARN????
Bring back this rivalry, 2022 style!!! lets go 9ers!!!
We are gonna blow these cowgirls out
Wow in that 1994 NFC Championship game the Cowboys turn it over three times in the first quarter and gave the 49ers 21 points in the first quarter alone..... that was just too much to overcome
It's called not being mentally prepared.
Round 2 of the 2020's in 6 days.
This matchup best of wild card weekend
Yup
Let's bring this RIVALRY BACK!!
Jimmy G is coming!!!
No need to, let the Cowboys sleep in eternal peace.
2019 NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME FINAL SCORE: DALLAS 10 - 49ERS 21
Nope. The cowboys are the seahawks rivals now
Richard Carr Cowboys won't even make it that far. Jimmy g will lead the miners to titles though. He's been learning from the goat for a couple years now.
this weekend they play yet again the last time since the 94 nfc title game good luck to both clubs
Here we go again !!!
Hopefully this weekends playoff game between the 9ers and The boys will live up to the memories of this rivalry.
All of these dumb comments and comparisons today's teams don't have the Star power or personalities it's not no rivalry or rekindled rivalry such goofy comments

Cowboys suck.
Greatest month of my adulthood. First we get a great show against the Cowboys, and we get the Packers next week. This defines my childhood in the 90's. Hopefully they deliver another win against the Pack, would be a great birthday present to finish off this month just as they did in '94.
Absolutely LOVE these videos of documenting the Ghosts of NFL’s past!! 👻
Football at it's purest,,Pat and John" Simply the Best !!
man I loved this rivalry ..loved it. still love watching them both when they go at it. love it.
I was born in 1994, in the midst of the Cowboys dynasty toward its end. I arrived too late to witness the greatness of that time. I became a Cowboys fan through my family, who are all Cowboys fans themselves. I love going back and doing my research and learning about the team’s history through content like this.
Seriously wish that the NFL would do more of these documentaries on other rivalries in the league.
Nothing was greater then this.
