Saving Ducklings From The Crows

  • I got a phone call from my daughter who was at her friends house. She told me that there was a mother duck and her ducklings who were being threatened by predators in a town house complex in Vancouver. (There was no pond or bodies of water close by for them to retreat too. ) The ducklings were being taken by cats and crows so she and some residents in the complex all helped to collect the remaining ducklings. Unfortunately, they were not able to catch the mother. I went over to help and was going to catch the mother duck but she flew away once she saw the net. We decided to put the ducklings in a box and walk them over to the closest pond which is about 1.3 km away. The mother duck followed us across two busy streets then we released the ducklings at a small pond in Central park in Burnaby. It was truly heartwarming to see them reunite. It's so great to see that a small community came together to help another family who was in need of help.

Thank you. Good job! I witnessed a crow grabbing a duckling at Burnaby Lake recently, there was nothing I could do. I feel traumatized.

What I particularly liked watching, was that the mama duck trusted you such that she didn’t attack you. I’ve seen a swan attack a human who was only trying to save her cygnet, and geese hiss at humans who come too close to their nest. But for some reason, mama duck instinctively knew you were the good guy. Great job!

Omg you are both brilliant in my eyes for helping the baby ducklings and the mother. 😊👍

Good job! Maybe that's why I saw those ducklings in the weeks following.

That was nice. I am sure that felt good. I am so glad you both were not put off by a Plan B. :D

It’s not safe in open water for ducklings as larger fish like bass can easily gulp them down from the top water. Notice how they all clump together so close to mom , that’s like a deterrent for predators that perceive it as one big mass versus a bunch of small things they’d normally eat. Its a defense mechanism much like that if a bait ball that schools of fish form to evade predators. Little ducklings are so vulnerable. Sad two were lost to crows.
