How to Measure Zipper Gauge (Size)

- When you're looking to measure the gauge of the zipper, this video will show you how to do that. The zipper gauge refers to the size of the teeth of the zipper. From this you'll be able to find replacement sliders that will fit your zipper needs.

Thanks for that.
What if your slider has broken and the zip is open and you can’t close it to measure?
I know this comment is a year old, but were you able to find out the answer for this?
My suggested fix for if the zip can’t be closed. Choose a length of the zip where there is not much tension. Then you can push the two sides together. The tiny teeth should mesh together. Beware the slightest tension will pull it apart, however with care you should be able to pop a sufficient length together to take a measurement. 1 to 2 cm or half inch should do, but make sure zip lays flat before you measure.
To get the slider on you need access to the end which is normally open. There is usually either metal clip (staple) or a stitch intended to prevent the slider running off the end. Remove this stop, pop the two sides together and slide the slider onto the end. Then replace the stitch or clip. This will prevent the slider running off the end. Also the zip will open itself as soon as it was closed if there is nothing holding the end together. Hope this is helpful😀
I keep watching these videos and have yet to find someone explain how to do this in the only moment most of us will ever look this information up. When the zipper is broken and the slider is gone, and the teeth are open. Another bit of thinking is why the best piece of information is hard to find right on the teeth itself printed on the stoppers, their size.
You learn something every day, outstanding 👏
Learn something new everyday. This may save me having to get out my stitch ripper to replace the entire zipper.
Would be nice if someone created some sort of reference about how to measure zippers AFTER the pull has failed and vanished, because it seems like these days, most pulls fail by the central post, rather than the key or the loop the key attaches to.
Thank you - you've helped me save my favourite hoodie! 😊💫🙏
Do you measure both sides of the teeth as their zipped, or just the one side like it appears you're doing?
I watched your UA-cam videos, very good information. I bought a used backpack only to find a missing zipper slider, I tried to email you but it failed. Does the zipper sides have to be put into each other to measure it? Can’t seem to get the little knubs to go to lock into each other.
Thanks for this, it helps me a lot, but how would I measure if the two sides are not together at all?
Exactly!! 💯💯💯💯
The slider I want to replace reads GO3 and the measurement is 3/16". Am I correct that I need a size 3 raplacement? Thanks so much in advance!!
Is there a measurement for the thickness of the teeth (measuring front to back, not side to side)?
So is the number of millimetres the same number on the slider? I'm in the UK
When the slider is gone how do you put the zipper together to measure it ?
I have used a pliers to reassemble a few teeth at the end of a zipper to measure it. I have had success with nylon coils, metal tooth, and plastic molded nylon zippers.
Is there a chart for manufacturers and types - like YKK zips on 70s 80s parkas, the chunky plastic zip on OnePiece jumpsuits etc.?
Very helpful, thanks
So what do you do if the track won't close because it doesn't have a slider on it already, I cant get mine to stay closed for accurate measurement
Is there a difference in sliders between
metal and coil zipper sliders or can either be used?
Hi would you if YKK sliders would work on Talon zippers? If not, can I buy Talon sliders?
Cheers
How do you get the slider on
Could u use a 3mm pull for a size 7/16 zipper?
Thanks buddy 🤝😊
Thanks for the information. I have the slider that broke off but it reads 5VS, do the letters make a difference?
The "VS" can be a lot of different things. You want to make sure the gauge size is correct with the measurement of the teeth closed.
@@UCANZippersUSA VS typically means 'Vislon' which is a resin plastic usually frim YKK
my #5 Zipper measure 5.35MM, if i didn't know it was #5, would i round up or down ? p.s my zipper says 5L
Hello what if my slider has come off and it is lost. How do I put the zipper together to get a accurate measurement? Thank you David
Been awhile since your last upload. Thought you where done. Hope all is well. Merry Christmas.
Yeah, been a while....but never done! 😁 👍
Merry Christmas man!

What if I can't close the zipper
My Broken zipper pull shows an embossed: 0 or D on the back? What size do I need?????? Help anyone!
yes how do i measure a zipper with the slider broken off when the zipper was not closed???
Measure half of the zipper multiply by 2
@@henry-gerretgruning261 The teeth overlap though, so it's less than twice.

I need to order some slider
Where can I get 30 #10
I NEED HELP!!! I'm so frustrated...I put a size 5 zipper on my couch cushion and it fit BUT IT WONT PULL THE TEETH TOGETHER.....IM GOING CRAZY trying to fix this zipper...help...do I have to squeeze it or something
the zipper might be too big
I am having the same type of problem. I am trying to repair many exercise mats to no avail. All of them have no zipper pull. Mine is an 18.5 tooth per inch 5mm nylon coil zipper. I am working on making a zipper slider from scratch in plastic using 3D modeling. That may be the only way to get this one to work properly.
@@robinhandelman9228 Then just buy zipper pulls, don't replace the whole thing
@@cyberanswer Easier said than done. These are zippers made somewhere non-standard. It's a matter of them being somewhere between 4.5mm and 5mm. Since these are repairs for damaged exercise mats it's not much of an option. I have actually been replacing the entire covers, which are vinyl that would not survive replacing the zipper. Some of these mats are over 5 years old. The zipper pulls are actually removed intentionally in the design. I have tried Zip-N-Fix, and every other manufacturer's zipper slide for 4.5mm and 5mm and NOTHING works. I have spent lot of $$$ and much time on this issue. I am open to some samples of zipper slides but as I said, nothing to date has worked except some bending of a 5mm zipper and then only for 1 or 2 mat covers after which it breaks. Since I am not leaving the slide on the mat that is ok but the time invested isn't cost effective.
How to know which zipper pull detachable will fit my wallet zipper pull thats broken
What if the zipper can't be closed? How can I measure then? I can't push-force the teeth together.
