Thomas did you notice how gradually are made exhaust pipes in German car producers. BMW X3 has real exhaust pipes, Mercedes GLC has fake exhaust pipes but still openings and Audi has completely fake exhaust pipes with no openings and pipes are behind the rear fender. Same is with new A7. That is strange because Audi has owners(Mr. Porsche for example) which are pioneers in many fields of automotive industry but they cant make real exhaust pipes. Were they thinking that new Q5 will be only electric or...
I really appreciate just how in-depth you go in these reviews. It helps with decision making before even having to go to the dealer to drive one myself. Your calm speaking voice is also a very welcome change among other loud reviewers. Thank you :)
Great work from Autogefühl, as usual. Thanks, Thomas. One minor point, and this is one that almost every reviewer has missed with Audi's new interior. The addition of the freestanding tablet screen has also brought with it the ability to turn the thing off with just the press of a button. A godsend!
As a proud owner of an S4, a car that is finished perfectly in every way, it's baffling to me how anyone at Audi thought that fake exhaust tips would be acceptable. I was looking forward to the SQ5, but it's clear that they cut corners. This is such a conspicuous cost cutting effort, so it's fair to assume that they cut corners in areas that you won't see right away. And that's why I'm ruling this SUV out completely.
In my opinion too many manufacturers (e.g. Mercedes…) use these “cool” exhaust-covers!! The normal tailpipes like the S5 look best. I hope Audi will solve the problem because many customers criticize it. 😑 If one manufacture starts all the others will follow ….. Otherwise the new SQ5 looks very sporty and the design is very harmonic.👍🔥💪 And the SQ5 TFSI sounds way better than its predecessor with the TDI but I hope Audi will still launch a diesel for frequent drivers! For me the SQ5 is overall the best package in this segment. I hope they will launch a RSQ5 XD
I loved my SQ5 BiTurbo Diesel (3 Liter, V6, 313 HP, 650 NM, 5,1 secs to 100), but it had to be sold for my "Monster" :). As always thumbs up for you guys for this review. You are the best!!!!
I have purchased this SQ5. It is outstanding. Practical but sporty and fun. Plenty of power and handling for an SUV. Excellent review you have covered all the details. Helped me make my decision! Thank you. I highly recommend the 2018 SQ5 and was able to get it at a good price, $750 below invoice.
Front grill design is much attractive now than the previous model but it looks lower now or maybe the S version is intended to be because it's more faster than the normal Q5. Interior wise and performance Audi is on top always. I like the seats and the dash lay out specially the gear shifter it is beautiful.
I have been waiting for this one for a long time. Thank you Thomas and Autogefuhl team for another detailed review!! You provide a value service. As noted, you provide a test drive without the hassle of dealing with a local dealership. 1. Audi interiors, are second to none within its class. I do like the idea of the injected rubber on the upper door than other materials, as it's very resistant to wear and tear. 2. I wished that they offered an alternative to leather seats. Maybe next model ;)
+1. A fantastic, entertaining and informative Audi SQ5 review. .. Herr Thomas, zum Geburtstag ! .. Age 24 again! .. Nice to hear of the VWAG collaboration. .. Cheer's.
What a fantastic idea hosting a Fan / Autogefuhl outing. A Vail, Colorado to Deutschland road trip would be a bit lengthy ... I'll keep a sharp eye for all post gathering/party photo's that are bound to be posted. .. Man, 100 lucky souls + your staff are braced for fun! Cheer's, M/S
Finally the S Q5 line review. What a beautiful day in Germany 🇩🇪 with Thomas reviewing fully this outstanding Audi. Hopefully there is no animals skin interior.
Many Thanks Thomas - great Review as always. Good video and editing looking forward through the windscreen, and of the fun 0-100 km/h. I'm a full lumbar support person; and my wife too! Disappointing rear legroom for a big car, a Tiguan seems roomier. Yes, we've always been saying that Thomas's reviews give us much more info than if we'd been to the dealer ourselves. Nice car, but will look forward to Thomas's impressions of the new XC60 versus a Q5.
Comprehensive, elegant review by a composed and gracious host! Thank you, Thomas. Sorry I came to your overview after a few American ones (and I'm a Yank) that were enthusiastic but lacked precision and substance. You get the balance of facts and commentary just right, in my opinion. At first I was disappointed by exhaust tip, but its just one design decision, one belied by whole vehicle philosophy and engineering. If it is a deal breaker for you, that's fine, but not for me. Bit of confusion on seating surfaces: isn't Nappa leather available (9/2017) in the Prestige package? Your closing note on cost/expense is wise and fair-minded: each of us must choose what's affordable. My first autogefuhl viewing, and you set a world-class standard!
love to hear that, you are most welcome! Please consider the negative impact of leather and try to avoid it. I ll post our extensive resources below! *** We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter. At Autogefühl, we have already received several thousands (!) comments, messages and mails that more and more people want to combine enjoying their car with reducing the environmental impact at the same time. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself. In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first. Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production: ua-cam.com/video/LNSUzZXzpdc/v-deo.html List of practical reasons against animal skin seats: 1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it) 2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling 3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating 4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling 5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa 6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review ua-cam.com/video/y2wNGFKa4M0/v-deo.html) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla 7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather) To the environmental reasons: 1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below) 2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf 3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage. 4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body. 5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy. 6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/ To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production” 1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small. 2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce. 3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future. More special video episodes: 1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/8f91KgbVbJQ/v-deo.html 2. And another one right here: ua-cam.com/video/tMNgcLE0LDU/v-deo.html 3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: ua-cam.com/video/JipYvuDsI6s/v-deo.html timecode starting 27:46 4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: ua-cam.com/video/OgHs239bAnE/v-deo.html 5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway. Manufacturers reactions: We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now. So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. However, much has to be done still and the Autogefuehl community is massively helping in boosting the positive change! Help to raise awareness on this subject. Thanks!
Thanks for the full reply and all the resources you name, have gone to some of the links. I've considered carefully your points, and while I've loved leather seating in the past, will think long and hard about it with the next purchase, in November. You and your mates are respectful, sensible, and compassionate, and that in the end impresses me to the core. You make your points with dignity and without blaming and shaming. How about stepping in as a US Congressman or what the hell, as POTUS? We all can make more considered choices and decisions, and even if we disagree, not descend into ad hominem criticism and extreme rhetoric.
I can't believe the designers needed to be told that we expect a real exhaust on such an expensive and sporty vehicle. I was trying to decide between S4 and SQ5 but when I found out about the fake exhaust my choice was made for me. (Love my S4.) A shame though because otherwise the SQ5 is very nice.
The interior looks a little bit upgraded than the previous Q5. But the refinement of materials used interior is slight close to the previous version of Q5 S-line (sold in France). But I don't like the orange color of lights on the dashboard. Amber lights are better. I didn't see Thomas show whether the driver seat could be in lower position or not.
dear thomas, i would like your appreciated opinion 1st: between porsche macan 2.0 lt with PASM and sport chrono package and audi SQ5 (with no air suspension) 2nd: between porsche macan 2.0 lt and audi Q5 2.0lt TFSI quattro (petrol) with air suspension (and plenty of extra options) all these three cars have about the same price in greece... I am individual, no family, no kids, not interested in space or practicality much. which you think is best buy in terms of dynamics, sportiness, fun to drive e.t.c. in 1st case and then in second case. then the same question regarding best car overall. i think one serious "disadvantage " of macan is its platform-chassis which is the previous one of Q5 and not the updated one. thank you in advance!
This Navarra Blue is quite nice, I usually prefer the Arg Blue too but maybe Navarra Blue suits the S4/S5/SQ5 better. It gives them a more mature look but still special.
Bought a monsoon grey metallic sq5 premium plus with s sport package, 21 inch wheels, dynamic steering and magma red interior this past weekend. No regrets. The exhaust doesn't bother me at all. I'm actually happy I don't have to clean the tips. There are a few hard plastics in the interior but again, not a big deal. All of the competitors in this price point have hard plastics inside - The GLC being the worst for build quality. SQ5 is in my opinion, the most well rounded suv in the segment and I test drove all of them extensively.
How did you find the ride quality between GLC43 and SQ5 (I'm stuck on which to pick). Im liking the 21" wheels on both cars so Im compromising on ride quality. Got an SQ5 test drive next week but can't get a GLC43 anytime soon. Would be interested in your feedback. Cheers
Jimbo Junior I feel like the glc suspension in comfort mode was stiffer than the sq5 in comfort mode but sport+ in the merc and dynamic in the audi were similar enough as far as ride quality. Don't think you can go wrong either way. My heart was with the glc but the sq5 won me over as a more well rounded offering for me.
I think when you drive this kind of cars you should also try do some offroad driving, even if they're not proper offroaders it'd still be nice to know how they drive. Great video as always anyway :).
Great review Thomas. I also agree that leather is a bad option for an interior (sustainability, ethics), but if you buy a used car with a leather interior is that acceptable in terms of moral/ethical view ?,
+alban productions _ excellent question and great that u care! Lets take it that way: it is very important to set the right demand as a customer for new cars. And it is surely also at least not bad to do it for the used car market.imagine that prices for cars with Alcantara or fabric or leatherette seats would be stable on the used car market, that would also help new car customers in the decision process. The practical disadvantages (heat in summer, cold in winter) of course remain the same.
Very nice review Thomas. Dynamically speaking how would you compare the Audi SQ5 to the A4 allroad? I realize they are different segments but functionality is very similar. I live in the USA where the S4 Avant is not available. Thank you.
Hi autogefuehl Which of two vehicles offer the most driving dynamic experience? A Q5 WITHOUT air suspension OR a Q5 WITH air suspension as an option extra using the lowest height? I m interested in driving sport pleasure and I can not decide if buying the air suspension, that offers me more sporty feeling (at the lowest position) or not What do you think? I think air suspension offers off road possibilities and not more sporty direction compared to a vehicle with no air suspension
Of course i know you can get sporty setup without air susension, but the height on vehicle does not lower.. But you can lower it with air suspension.. Thats why im asking. Comparing these two vehicles. The one with no air susp at sport setup and the other with air suspension at its sportest setup (most lower height) Thank you
I think the Volvo XC60 T8 is going to be an interesting alternative with it's 400hp and option to drive in pure EV mode. I like the SQ5's redesign (except for those fake exhaust tips). It looks sharper from every angle but Audi should have moved forward with it's engine technology. I'd like to see a fuel cell hybrid version.
Audi as usual makes beautiful "looking" interiors. I wish with the move to Mexico though they'd make the interior richer. I was bummed to feel that hard door panels and the entire bottom of the dash and center console is hard cheap plastic.
Hey Thomas. That was a fabulous and insightful review, as usual. When will you get your hands on the GLC Coupe AMG 63 for a review? Mercedes AMG need to get on with it
Hi Thomas, hope I can have your reply. Is the seat color of SQ5 Rotor Gray? Why does it look much lighter than the pic it shows on Audi website? Thx for replying!
Autogefühl Thank you for replying! I would love to have Alcantara seats, but they only offer Fine Nappa seats here in China, too bad! Actually im considering the color for my newly-ordered S5. Can't decide betweet black and rotor gray. Does rotor gray look exactly as shown in your video?
Autogefühl No, they dont offer Audi Exclusive neither. S5's China launch was in late June this year and the first vechicle arrived at Audi's dealer was last week! I saw your S5 review one year ago wanting one for my own. I have been waiting for a year to place my order and yet another six months for the car to be built and shipped to China. I think Audi just dont take Chinese market serious. bad
Good job with setting the Display Language in English!!! What about Night Vision option? What is the real difference between B&O and other option? Also, please kindly show each car if the backseat is adjustable to lean back (worst backseat drives are for me the GLE, GL and Range Rover, best is Toyota RAV-4)
I like the cars from MLB Evo platform like the new A4 A5 and this, while the q5 hasn't been on sale in China, but I know the SQ5 will be expensive here, wish I can get enough money for this car.
Thomas, another great review. I love the colour and the masculine good looks of the Audi SQ5 (but I'd lose those silly chrome mirror caps and have them painted with the body colour). : )
OldVillain S models have always had aluminum look mirror caps (S4, S5) unless you get the optional blackout package, normally only available with Mythos black paint
I've never understood why Audi says the ZF is used due to the new torque output, yet the R8 uses a dual clutch with more torque than the S cars and the RS5.
well, torque is one reason, but obviously not for every engine combination / package it applies. I could imagine that it works with the R8 because it is a naturally aspirated engine and therefore maybe the DCT can handle it better? Just an assumption.
They say that shifting was not so smooth with s-tronic and turbo 6 cylinder. Previous S4 S5 SQ5 had supercharged 6 cylinder with max torque coming at a higher rpm. I have s-tronic in my new TT and shifting is not always smooth from standstill.
Once again, Excellent review Thomas! I wanted to get your take on this issue a friend of mine has with the "cloth/allkentara" seating/interior surfaces. (sorry for butchering the name of the fau-sweede name) Anyway, he's had this seating/steering wheel issues rising from the fact that humans have this skin film that, over a period of time is attached to the contact surfaces that are looking pretty bad after a few months of driving! I must admit it does look pretty bad like the touch points are matting up! Does/is the other cloth applications other than this alcantara?
Hey m8, this can happen faster to the steering wheel, it wont be that harsh on the normal seats. With a little water and a brush you can surprisingly "refresh" the surface however. And if there is no help at all, you can also have it re-wrapped, too. In any case, it is better than gripping on Chrome tanned animal skin surfaces and supporting the system. As an alternative, you can also get a leatherette steering wheel (available at Mercedes and Tesla so far), or also in base model cars, a normal non-leather steering wheel (a little harder, but more durable)
Fake exhausts are just awfull !!! .Bottom mirror caps should be body colour !!! I don't like that plastic and butons on the bottom of the seats, also with any other car brand, especialy premium brands, should do much better job there like put brushed aluminum insted of plastic or something else!!! BTW Review is good as always!
Autogefühl I know, but this test car had many other options like matrix lights and virtual cockpit so I was confused. But since you said this was only €60k and the recent review of the Q5 was €70k, there must be lots of missing options on this one.
Thanks Thomas for a great review as always! Wondering what the SQ5 TDI will be like. I'm not sure what will happen with South Africa, as we actually only got the diesel version of the SQ5 (Typ 8R), but one is able to order the TFSI version at the moment, so not sure if the diesel version will come to our shores. The diesel is really nice for some of the long distance driving, like I can fairly easily get 900-950km on a tank with the pre-facelift Q3 2.0TDI Quattro which is great. Also looking forward to seeing the XC60 review as it's probably really close competition to the Q5. Do you think the Q5 3.0TDI could be quite a good middle option, more than sufficient torque, but also great comfort and long distance driving, and even highly spec'd would be less expensive than a SQ5 version?
xc60 coming up very soon! About the Q5 prices, it really matters what u do with the extras, they add up quickly. As recently seen, u can even put a 2.0 TDI to double the price :)
That's great news, looking forward to the XC60, really like the new design route. Guess that's true :) most Audi's (especially the S or RS models) can double their price if one ticks too many extras :D
I like your car reviews Thomas and this one was shorter than I would like to see. I would have enjoyed the Autobahn driving experience. Did you feel the steering was a little isolated and insensitive? I waited to see this review before possibly purchasing the 2018 SQ5. I like sportiness on occasion and I was impressed with the AMG GLC 43 SUV however it was a little hard riding compared to this car. There was an emotional attraction to the Mercedes that I don't quite feel with the Audi. So common sense says the Audi but emotion says the Mercedes.
Hey Paul, I can understand what you are saying ye. The steering here is totally fine. Have you compared our GLC 43 review? ua-cam.com/video/K5_FWSq6bzI/v-deo.html My point would also be that Mercedes offers different full alternatives to animal skin (even for outside bolsters and steering wheel) whereas Audi doesnt. The Q5 is awesome in driving, but indeed the GLC can be more emotionally appealing
Audi S cars always had 4 real exhaust pipes and they look really expensive and nice, but look how disgusting these fake exhausts, how did audi think people will like such shity design?
Love the Arrakis reference ;) The car is awesome, but with some serious showstoppers. Rear bumper can get replaced, but it is a shame to send a brand new car to the body shop just because a designer had a brain fart. Audi S models are rarely bought by people who don't care about cars, and fake exhausts is something only suitable for an UP! The infotainment screen is a much bigger problem. Not easily replaced and sticking out like an iPad mount, terrible design in my opinion. Especially with the huge digital dash you will almost never use the screen. But great they offer the petrol sq5 in Europe now.
Those fake quad exhaust tips are atrocious. I was hoping for more power and fuel economy than the MB GLC43, not less. I like the interior, but some trim pieces are pretty cheap.
Thomas, did you mention the test consumption? Guessing 13-15 liters? I really do not understand WHO would buy this car... even you folks in Germany, a full tank would last 350 km in high speed? And IF you cant speed no point of having a big high powered petrol engine.. good review though!
well, torque is one reason, but obviously not for every engine combination / package it applies. I could imagine that it works with the R8 because it is a naturally aspirated engine and therefore maybe the DCT can handle it better? Just an assumption.
S tronic in previous gen S5/S4 was a disaster in terms of durability and maintenance. I see now where they are coming from with that tiptronic implementation. We will se how it will turn out in several years. Btw. good review keep up good work!
Matt Kochanowski that's a completely different type of transmission probably. The R8 is a midship car with the engine in the middle and the R8's transmissions is probably very expensive to replace.
Meet us at the fan meeting event! ua-cam.com/video/KH4I47wIQi8/v-deo.html
Same XD I wish...Cape Town is a little far...probably need a month plus to drive there XD

You’re are totally right

The addition of the freestanding tablet screen has also brought with it the ability to turn the thing off with just the press of a button. A godsend!
I see an increase of production quality in this video, adding some new camera angles while showing off some of the car's features. Great work guys!
I would like to say something positive about the fake exhaust tips - they are easy to keep clean.
Looks great in green with the black package and 21 inch rims.
Another great review Thomas. I am considering buying a SQ5 for my wife and this review has really helped with my decision. Keep up the great videos.
thanks stick with us!
Curtis Session Lucky her 😰👍🏻
@autogefuehl hi !
Sq5 or Glc 43 has smoother ride and quieter sound ?
Thank you !
As a proud owner of an S4, a car that is finished perfectly in every way, it's baffling to me how anyone at Audi thought that fake exhaust tips would be acceptable. sport cars are not supposed to be too quiet. Everybody driving a sport car likes to be more involved with the driving.
Thanks for the review.
I loved my SQ5 BiTurbo Diesel (3 Liter, V6, 313 HP, 650 NM, 5,1 secs to 100), but it had to be sold for my "Monster" :). As always thumbs up for you guys for this review. You are the best!!!!
(y)
The script writing and camera work on your videos always amaze me.
Great work!
thanks Robert !
Thanks and enjoy 😉
Hi !
Still happy with the sq5 ?
Any serious problems ?
Front grill design is much attractive now than the previous model but it looks lower now or maybe the S version is intended to be because it's more faster than the normal Q5. Interior wise and performance Audi is on top always. I like the seats and the dash lay out specially the gear shifter it is beautiful.
Amazing car it produced 7.2L/100km this afternoon, when I drove 450km.
Great review as always Thomas. Those exhaust "pipes" are a no go, no matter how good the car is its 100% a pass because of that.
Maybe next model ;)
really appreciate your approval and your caring!
+1. A fantastic, entertaining and informative Audi SQ5 review. .. Herr Thomas, zum Geburtstag ! .. Age 24 again! .. Nice to hear of the VWAG collaboration. .. Cheer's.
thanks michael! Hope u join us at the event!
The green one looks surprisingly good 🤔
I think navarra blue looks really smart, it changes so much with the lighting. But those fake exhausts are inexcusable!
I've been looking forward to this review for weeks!
MikeZolo I agree, it seemed like such a long time since they posted the preview on Instagram.
Finally the S Q5 line review. What a beautiful day in Germany 🇩🇪 with Thomas reviewing fully this outstanding Audi. Hopefully there is no animals skin interior.
sadly not really with the SQ5. Alcantara inside at least possible!
For the American market, the only thing that would sell better than animal skin would be human skin.
Nice car, but will look forward to Thomas's impressions of the new XC60 versus a Q5.
thanks mr. lumbar! ;-)

***
We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter.
Check out our special video addressing car CEOs as a first summary and also see conditions of animal skin production:
ua-cam.com/video/LNSUzZXzpdc/v-deo.html
List of practical reasons against animal skin seats:
1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it)
2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling
3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating
4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling
5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa
6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review ua-cam.com/video/y2wNGFKa4M0/v-deo.html) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla
7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather)
To the environmental reasons:
1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below)
2. See this interesting essay for more on climate emissions background: www.worldwatch.org/files/pdf/Livestock%20and%20Climate%20Change.pdf
A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/
To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production”
More special video episodes:
1. A initial special video from Autogefühl considering the use of leather can be found here: ua-cam.com/video/8f91KgbVbJQ/v-deo.html
2. And another one right here: ua-cam.com/video/tMNgcLE0LDU/v-deo.html
3. Furthermore, you’ll find the footage of leather production also here, where people are walking in chemicals etc. and animals have to watch their friends being slaughtered in front of their eyes: ua-cam.com/video/JipYvuDsI6s/v-deo.html
timecode starting 27:46
4. This is another video which very well summarizes the torture of leather production, shots taken at big farms which directly produce for the automotive industry: ua-cam.com/video/OgHs239bAnE/v-deo.html
5. Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway.
Manufacturers reactions:
We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL.
We all can make more considered choices and decisions, and even if we disagree, not descend into ad hominem criticism and extreme rhetoric.
thomas's the best
fake tips the worst
Best review yet!
I ordered this car and cannot wait to try it. Special order due July 19th.
thanks and enjoy!
Excellent car, it has balance, power, beauty, interior and exterior, perfect !
The fake looking exhaust really throws me off but i love the overall design
Another great review, Thomas. It's an S model. Four proper exhausts please, Audi!!!
I like the Porsche Macan and the Mercedes GLE a little bit more, but still a 2nd nice runner up!
dear thomas, i would like your appreciated opinion
1st: between porsche macan 2.0 lt with PASM and sport chrono package and audi SQ5 (with no air suspension)
2nd: between porsche macan 2.0 lt and audi Q5 2.0lt TFSI quattro (petrol) with air suspension (and plenty of extra options)
all these three cars have about the same price in greece...
Thanks for the feedback!
Cheers
check the C43 here: ua-cam.com/video/K5_FWSq6bzI/v-deo.html
Thanks I've watched it about 10 times ha ha - my very first Thomas review. The most thorough reviews on youtube.
Great review! Really looking forward to a BMW M3/4 review, the new LCI models look great
thanks! I ll see if I can get a 3 series with a nice sporty interior
Perfektes Intro 😍
Tolle Aufnahmen und tolles Review! :)
vielen Dank! :)
Thank you.
Thanks! The SQ5 offers indeed a dynamic ride. It's more about the height difference. Q5 has upright seating position, A4 has a longer trunk
Beautiful car and really great camera work in this review
thanks steven !
Such a rich and deep blue color.. Classy
Is this premium plus or prestige trim?
Hi Thomas. What color is it? Normal dark blue or Audi special?
that should be from the normal metallic extra list
Hey does all Audi SQ5 quattro 3.0 TFSI have v6? Sorry for stupid question
yes
I test drove an SQ5 recently (2018 model). Throttle lag was pretty horrendous. I wonder if that's an issue with only 2018 models... or just me
Hi autogefuehl
Which of two vehicles offer the most driving dynamic experience?
A Q5 WITHOUT air suspension
OR
a Q5 WITH air suspension as an option extra using the lowest height?
I m interested in driving sport pleasure and I can not decide if buying the air suspension, that offers me more sporty feeling (at the lowest position) or not
What do you think? I think air suspension offers off road possibilities and not more sporty direction compared to a vehicle with no air suspension
+apostolos b. Afaik u can get a sporty setup without air suspension cant u?
Autogefühl
Sorry, i didnt quite catch you.. what do you mean? Should i add air suspension as option?
Thank you again
Of course i know you can get sporty setup without air susension, but the height on vehicle does not lower..
But you can lower it with air suspension..
Thats why im asking. Comparing these two vehicles.
The one with no air susp at sport setup and the other with air suspension at its sportest setup (most lower height)
Thank you
+apostolos b. Not really needed if u wanna sporty ride
Autogefühl thank you!
Keep up with to the point reviews!
How would you compare this vehicle to the 2017 Infiniti QX70 Limited (final model year)?
ua-cam.com/video/g-RwJPOuyCQ/v-deo.html
I think the Volvo XC60 T8 is going to be an interesting alternative with it's 400hp and option to drive in pure EV mode. I like the SQ5's redesign (except for those fake exhaust tips). It looks sharper from every angle but Audi should have moved forward with it's engine technology. I'd like to see a fuel cell hybrid version.
See the all-new XC60 review: ua-cam.com/video/EO51oLAjl4E/v-deo.html
Those seats look nice and cozy
Excellent review Thomas! Cheers!
thanks for joining us!
I missed the Dune reference the first time round! Love it!
Great review as always Thomas. Did the car you were testing have the 'Dynamic Steering' option or was it the standard steering?
dynamic
Thanks for confirming 👍🏽
Audi as usual makes beautiful "looking" interiors. I wish with the move to Mexico though they'd make the interior richer. I was bummed to feel that hard door panels and the entire bottom of the dash and center console is hard cheap plastic.
Hey Thomas. That was a fabulous and insightful review, as usual. When will you get your hands on the GLC Coupe AMG 63 for a review? Mercedes AMG need to get on with it
+Central Lifestyle not yet but soon :)
Hi Thomas, hope I can have your reply. Is the seat color of SQ5 Rotor Gray? Why does it look much lighter than the pic it shows on Audi website? Thx for replying!
configurator pictures are never real, that's why. Dont bother anyway, take fabric or alcantara seats :)
Thats really a shame. I guess that should be rotor gray. Do you have an Audi Exclusive Programme in China where u can put custom wishes?
Autogefühl No, they dont offer Audi Exclusive neither. S5's China launch was in late June this year and the first vechicle arrived at Audi's dealer was last week! I saw your S5 review one year ago wanting one for my own. I have been waiting for a year to place my order and yet another six months for the car to be built and shipped to China. I think Audi just dont take Chinese market serious. bad
they should, it is their biggest one as far as I know :)
audi. q 5 BEST. we know that. Thank you
19:21 I don't know whether that was planned or not but it turned out really funny
Great car! and great review!
thanks Tim !
I agree about the review but sadly I don’t agree about the car being great, too much plastic and the fake exhaust looks absolutely second rate
Beautiful car !! Beautiful color
I like the cars from MLB Evo platform like the new A4 A5 and this, while the q5 hasn't been on sale in China, but I know the SQ5 will be expensive here, wish I can get enough money for this car.
By the way, just watched the 24 hours of Le Mans on eurosport, they have the Q5 commercial in between. same color as this SQ5
Thomas: Again stellar review thanks so much!
cheers Don !
ein Benziner klingt einfach toll. Gut das Audi für dieses Auto einen anbietet
Great review as always!
Great review Thomas. You now have me leaning towards the SQ5 and away from the GLC AMG!
Thanks! Oh, really? How come? :)
Really superb video-cut this time!
Thomas, another great review.
I love the colour and the masculine good looks of the Audi SQ5 (but I'd lose those silly chrome mirror caps and have them painted with the body colour).
: )
OldVillain you can have them blacked out
OldVillain S models have always had aluminum look mirror caps (S4, S5) unless you get the optional blackout package, normally only available with Mythos black paint
I've never understood why Audi says the ZF is used due to the new torque output, yet the R8 uses a dual clutch with more torque than the S cars and the RS5.
+Gordon Williams yeah
Gordon Williams totally different transmission, that's why. Also I kinda doubt the RS5 has less torque than the R8. You got the numbers?!
well, torque is one reason, but obviously not for every engine combination / package it applies.
Great review as always Thomas! There was a preview of the BMW 530e a few weeks ago; are you planning a review soon?
+ilovejc1 thanks! Not yet
+ilovejc1 thanks! Not yet
New style editing
Great video about a great car. My current favourite.
Good vehicle, nice design and good review.
That acceleration just isn't the same without a needle on the tach!
Fake exhausts are just awfull !!!
.Bottom mirror caps should be body colour !!!
I don't like that plastic and butons on the bottom of the seats, also with any other car brand, especialy premium brands, should do much better job there like put brushed aluminum insted of plastic or something else!!!
BTW Review is good as always!
thanks buddy!
the rainman has standard Q5 will get you body coloured wing mirrors. S audi trademark the aluminium mirrors. But hey we all have our own opinions.
At 5:09 you show the inside of the driver door with NO seat memory! Is that an option like the panorama roof?
there is hardly any car that comes standard with it
Autogefühl I know, but this test car had many other options like matrix lights and virtual cockpit so I was confused. But since you said this was only €60k and the recent review of the Q5 was €70k, there must be lots of missing options on this one.
actually the sq5 starts at about 65 k thats what I said, but this very test vehicle again had at least 20 k options in it - they almost always do that
nice antique. when are audi going to deliver the ev theyve been promising?
Great review, Thomas: thank you.
+pete draper thank you Pete
At last, an explanation as to why you prefer the "blue in blue" cars :) Any chance of a Alpina B6 review?
hey Don, the Alpina car tuner does prefer to show their cars in print media
I thought you could open the tailgate by using your foot right below where the tow hitch would be? This is a feature with the S5 Sportback at least.
optional feature yeah
Does anyone know what is the name of this car color? Please let me know many thanks in advance!
chen wu it is Navarra blue metallic paint
Well, you are right Thomas, My 2018 is exactly like this.
Hi !
Still happy?
Any serious problems?
Thomas, what is the color of those seats? Is that Rotor Gray?
I guess so. Better to stick with the original standard Alcantara however
Another great review Thomas! I have ordered mine and cannot wait to pick it up on Aug 18th.
then we wish you all the best with your new car :)
Why don't you use launch control when doing launch acceleration
+Michael Fardoulis i did
Autogefühl I don't think so, laugh holds the revs and makes a particular sound. I have this car
We are waiting for the volvo XC60 review
yes, couple of weeks left !
Very curious to see that one indeed :-)
T8 R-design? Please!
Volvo has unfortunately become chinese.
+Strongholdex Can you try that WITH (proper) argumentation now?
My dream garage
Navarra Blue Audi SQ5
Volkswagen Golf R lapiz blue metallic
Civic type r review next?
seen our static preview?
Autogefühl yea I saw it
Thank you. Excellent review.
join us fore more =)
Love your Cayenne review in Crete. Have an S on order. But should check out the SQ5 too. Thoughts...,
thanks and enjoy :)
Have you compared our GLC 43 review?
ua-cam.com/video/K5_FWSq6bzI/v-deo.html
My point would also be that Mercedes offers different full alternatives to animal skin (even for outside bolsters and steering wheel) whereas Audi doesnt. The Q5 is awesome in driving, but indeed the GLC can be more emotionally appealing
Audi S cars always had 4 real exhaust pipes and they look really expensive and nice, but look how disgusting these fake exhausts, how did audi think people will like such shity design?
Mercedes does the same thing, I'm not encouraging this practice, but you'll only notice it if you know about it and pay close attention to it.
for mercedes you still can see the exhaust pipes.
It truly doesn't bother me.
Doesn't bother me either. No sooty exhaust to clean. This is really a trivial thing.
Exhausts are still there mate, they are just shorter. Not fake at all, they just hidden them. ITs a design matter, chill man. :)
I can't believe that you forgot the 5th door safety test :-)
Ivan Ignath he did it on the regular Q5 a couple of weeks ago. It failed
Great informative review, thank you.
+Red Zed 👌
Love the Arrakis reference ;)
The car is awesome, but with some serious showstoppers.
New Camera?
Great video!
Please, review the Mini JCW :)
we did, it is here: ua-cam.com/video/F0A9nBNdRy0/v-deo.html
Autogefühl I've watched that one, but I meant the Mini Cooper JCW
Those fake quad exhaust tips are atrocious.
I was hoping for more power and fuel economy than the MB GLC43, not less.
I like the interior, but some trim pieces are pretty cheap.
Thomas, did you mention the test consumption? Guessing 13-15 liters? I really do not understand WHO would buy this car... even you folks in Germany, a full tank would last 350 km in high speed? And IF you
cant speed no point of having a big high powered petrol engine..
good review though!
ye i think i mentioned it in the driving part
610 HP R8 can have s-tronic but v6 turbo suddenly has too much torque for stronic? can anyone explain it to me pls.
well, torque is one reason, but obviously not for every engine combination / package it applies.
Thanks! 👍🏾
