i believe that this version of give it up, was james' favorite tune to perform. it was a feel good song and it gets the crowd into the show. this tune did not have much in a lyrical way, but the groove , oh brother, the GROOVE, with everybody cooking at 300 degrees and bootsy layin' that funky bassline, how could you possibly sit still behind that? look through the crowd, there are so many heads bobbin', and hands clapping, some could not help themselves and got up to dance. that's my man.
james was tapping into a world we all call soul and funk way before it even had a name. he practically invented and paved the way to what we now know. james the hardest working man in show business.
Thank you sooooooo much UA-cam for allowing everyone the chance to see how good Soul music used to be, and how very far it's fallen. Heck, ALL music for that matter!
This might be the grooviest tune ever ! When I hear it, I can't stay still, my all body and my mind are grooving. The rhythm section is so tight, the groove, the energy everything is in the pocket. The version in the double-live LP is even sicker ! James Brown and the JB's is action, you can't beat this !
They never heard anything like this before they're overwhelm. This is their first time hearing intense SOUL music. They are in shock!!! And amazed at the same time.
Here's a comment for you... "It wasn't just that James Brown threw down in his music, but it was how his music made you throw down. Hence, the term Break Dancing. Cause James got into your Soul." God Father of Soul. Peace.
You are abolutely right nodrinking. I grew up during this time period and I will say it once I will say it a million he is the most influential musician ever. Without him there would be no Funk, Hip hop, Michael Jackson, Prince etc.
When I need a "HolyShit! Moment", I can watch James Brown, and say,"Holy Shit!" Self defined, self proclaimed Soul Brother Number One, creator of a whole new kind of music and movement! The Prophet...James Brown! The genius...James Brown! ...One time, we had to stop the car and dance in a parking lot when his tune came on!
A young Bootsy Collins on fatback bass, getting up on the One! Great stuff. JB was a force of nature. Nearly five decades on, and he still remains unbeatable.
great footage JB both the man and the band are on FIRE great performance how the crowd can remain largely seated during this performance boggles my mind
What I realize about James is that he was so good at ambience that he never really had to sing the song. People didn't come to see him recite lyrics like most singers today.
there should be a monument to James Brown in NYC or Washington - Americans should respect and celebrate these incredible innovators. James Brown almost single-handedly invented a new type of music. There was funk yeah for sure but his insistence on minimalism and precision was something new entirely and influenced just about every aspect of music afterwards.
Every young musician should study this band...for the sheer raw ability to jam your ass off...Forget the technique...if you can't jam you shouldn't play anyway....
This is the best thing I've ever seen. I haven't been able to find other clips of him doing this same routine, even in other live videos of this song. Was he just on one this evening? Dude is dancing is ASS off.
This is a slamming tune and the Italians are just sitting there like its a church service(apart from a few). What the hell did these people listen too back in dem days.Lord have mercy.
May 3: Happy birthday Mr James Brown, The Godfather of Soul, Soul Brother # 1, Mr. Please, Please, Please, The Hardest Working Man in show Business (1933-2006) RIP. Blessings.
this was the baddest band ever... and the parliament/funkadelic crew follows! I'm from italy but sadly I was born 12 yrs later, so I missed all of my favorite bands... bologna is 300km from where i live but i would have been to this show even if I had to walk there! This music is still so powerful and relevant today so I just can't imagine how it would be for a 1971 italian kid to watch something like this. I would have been totally blown away
greatest entertainer of all time!!
True indeed
Man could you imagine being there live? The energy behind the band is freighting
The spiritual father of countless artists
Mystical, trance-inducing...absolutely the root of today's RnB.
No software, no computers...Just unabashed funk from the muscle.
Like simple diesel engine without electronics
Possibly the greatest band ever assembled. unraveled in purity. J B is the truth! thats so funky i want to get up a dance

This rendition/performance is fucking blistering!!!!!!
This shit COOKS!!!!
Damn Jimmy....dont be so mean on 'em!!!
james was tapping into a world we all call soul and funk way before it even had a name. he practically invented and paved the way to what we now know. james the hardest working man in show business.
This may be the best performance of all time by anyone.
This isn't even a particularly great James brown performance. I mean it's still awesome because it's him but there are better ones
The band was in a great flow and James was doing his usual thing. In combination with the band, and the song, this performance is an all time classic.
The best
Bravo!
The band may be the best performance of all time by any band. James Brown ain’t doing 💩 but screaming, Bootsy is killin it
Creator of the FUNK.😎
the live shows from the late 50s are just too good to believe,, they can't post them.
best start to a song EVER, a quick spin with a removal of the jacket, followed by a smooth slide and kick to the mic.
my favorite JB lineup of all time!

Bobby Byrd- Organ
St. Clair Pinckney- Tenor Sax
Fred Wesley- Trombone
Hasaan Jamison, Chicken Gunnells- Trumpets

The ultimate God Father of dance and SOUL...Brother number #1!
Thank you sooooooo much UA-cam for allowing everyone the chance to see how good Soul music used to be, and how very far it's fallen. Heck, ALL music for that matter!

Self defined, self proclaimed Soul Brother Number One, creator of a whole new kind of music and movement! The Prophet...James Brown! The genius...James Brown! ...One time, we had to stop the car and dance in a parking lot when his tune came on!
A great artist and his band made a song, a great DJ looped the breaks, a great culture was born!

Nobody did it like the Godfather.

What I realize about James is that he was so good at ambience that he never really had to sing the song. People didn't come to see him recite lyrics like most singers today.

RIP, Clyde and Jabo.
Funk is abstract.. those people who are of a concrete mind, can't understand this extra level of communication
this was the baddest band ever... and the parliament/funkadelic crew follows!

I love this version cause the snare stays on the upbeat unlike on the original version. Thank you for posting!
This is the best version of that tune I've ever heard. Bootsy on bass and his brother Catfish on guitar.😊
KING OF FUNK
Don't understand how you can sit in the front row, with this much funk in your face and not get up and dance.
PURE FUNK
we will never see another live band like this
