    She has the best high notes I have ever heard. She is able to leap the octave, and then fade off the note without losing an iota of quality, reflecting the fading of summer in her voice so beautifully. She modulates with the key so superbly its thrilling just to hear the key change. All with a joy and sparkle from her heart. Truly a master of her art, and so sweet and delightful to hear every time.

    Never heard a bad thing about Ms. Streich's voice. So gorgeous. Always a pleasure to listen to her, one is virtually stunned to hear such gorgeous tones coming out of a person. And me being a vocal student many years ago -- she enthralled me. I always wanted to sing like her! :-) but I had a deeper voice, one day -- one day -- I hope we can sing together.

    I agree with Rich Merne that this has to be considered the definitive version of the Thomas Moore classic. Rita Streich was one of the best loved and heavily recorded sopranos of the post-war period. With a Russian mother and German father she did not have her sorrows to seek in Berlin when the war ended but survived to be a favourite at Bayreuth, Vienna and Salzburg. She also made acclaimed appearances at La Scala in Milan and Covent Garden in London. Did you know that it Rita's version of "O mio babbino caro" that Rowan Atkinson lip-synced in the film "Mr. Bean's Holiday"?

    The best rendition ever sung of this song. Moving & Touching. When I reflect on my mother's death, I not only mourn her loss, but what she represented: A generation that is for the most part gone. Hearing musicians like Striech from the past, it brings a sad note to think that such beauty, deep expression of feeling, and love of the arts, the family, community, and the world has been replaced with mindless, tasteless music, film, and self-centeredness.

    I think I must have spent half my life listening to great sopranos and tenors and once again I have listened to perfection,did she ever sing a wrong note?I have known of her for many years but not in any great depth that is until this evening, for the last hour or so I have been totally enraptured. Comparing singers from different eras is always very interesting on you tube, so lets just say she compares with the best of any era,my current favourite is Anna Netrebko for her singing and beauty.

    I have just listened to this Magnificent Hymn to Life.
    It is to the credit to Thomas Moore for the words and to Flotow for the inspiring music.
    I reminds me that it was one of my late wife's favourite.
    Brian Leonard.

    • @marcmomus
      @marcmomus 4 роки тому +1

      Brian Leonard. The poem is set to a traditional Irish tune called "Aislean an Oigfear", or "The Young Man's Dream", which was first transcribed by Edward Bunting in 1792, based on a performance by harper Denis Hempson (Donnchadh Ó hAmhsaigh) at the Belfast Harp Festival. The poem and the tune together were published in December 1813 in volume 5 of Thomas Moore's A Selection of Irish Melodies. The original piano accompaniment was written by John Andrew Stevenson, several other arrangements followed in the 19th and 20th centuries, including two by Beethoven. Friedrich Von Flotow merely borrowed the poem and melody for his opera ‘Martha’ in 1847.

    What I like so much about Streich is that she seems to me (who knows little about opera) to be a real artist and musician who cares too much about what she is singing to play vocal tricks for the sake of applause. Listening to her, I seem to get the meaning of what she is singing because I am not distracted by any obvious technique and tricks.
