    Young people can be touched by this, but it is only old age that makes us truly understand this song. I know that now.

    For some reason I have not heard this song until this movie. What a classic and fitting for each of the two times it was heard in this movie. The opening and when the Police Station was in flames and Dixon couldn't hear the impending peril because of his ear buds. This was well done.

    The German composer Friedrich von Flotow incorporated the song “The Last Rose of Summer” into his opera “Martha”. In the opera the song is sung in German; however subsequently the opera has been translated and sung in many languages. The musical theme is used as a leitmotif underlying much of the structure of the opera. Unfortunately, Flowtow has become one of those classical composers known only for one piece (opus): “Martha”, though he composed much more music. Because of “Martha”, many think he composed the theme. However, the theme is from an Irish folk song predating the poem “The Last Rose of Summer”. The poem was written by Thomas Moore, probably as a new setting for the Irish tune. Dozens of other classical composers have used the theme, including Beethoven (in 1814 when Flowtow was only about 2 years old) and Mendelssohn.

    • @cmw9876
      @cmw9876 3 роки тому +2

      The theme for Moore's simple folk song has been an inspiration to generations of musicians. Each time I read something of it, there's another layer uncovered. I am delighted to read that the theme predates Moore's use. When and where did the musical cascade begin? I recently read of this as a piece written by Heinrich Wilhelm Ernst - for virtuoso violinists. I idly thought "No way!" and then found a recording by Hilary Hahn at the Verbier Festival in 2007. Virtuoso piece indeed! A lot of reading followed - is there no end to the story of this beautiful piece of music? There's a movie or a book in here somewhere. Thank you for your comment - once more, the layers of the story around "The Last Rose of Summer" leave me delighted.

      reading the comments is interesting as this is so well known in Ireland and check out another beautiful song I believe, those endearing young charms, also lyrics were put to the music of an old Irish 18th century tune. This was my deceased sister’s song when she was a young girl. Always moves me to tears.

    Well, thank you, Mr Ian Anderson for mounting this magnificent rendition of one of the most moving lyrics and melodies that is Irish to the core. Renee's timing, diction and delivery are superb. The depth and richness of her voice and exquisite control leave a unique signature on this oft-sung piece. Although I hear some voice elements of the great mezzo, Kathleen Ferrier, Renée is a shining star in that small group of select vocalists.

    Let's get some things straight. Friedrich Von Flotow didn't just incorporate this song into the Opera Martha on a whim. This melody was an ancient fragment of an old Irish Celtic melody that Sir Thomas Moore (early 19th century) miraculously saved for posterity. Like his Scottish counterpart poet Robert Burns, both men realized that great swaths of music and poetry were disappearing, lost to war and poverty, and thankfully salvaged fragments of Celtic music and poetry so that posterity would benefit. The lyrics of this tune are all Thomas Moore but the melody is from an ancient fragment of music he heard or came upon. I have no idea what the original lyrics would have been but Moore certainly got right the lyrics he composed as in both melody and lyrics, I can find no rivalry, only a duality of purpose. Exquisite.

    It watched the 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' film last night on DVD, which similarly drew me to seek this out. I have never heard this sublime piece of music before, and what a fabulous rendition (now listened to a few others). Poem dedicated to Renee Fleming, my favourite singer: with apology to Thomas Moore,
    the great Irish poet who wrote the lyrics of the song
    Summer is done/ yet there's one rose left in the green/withering under the scorching sun/
    a heart-rending scene/ once so long ago in my teen/upon your dress a rose I did pin/
    the first kiss we exchanged on the summer-green/ love was not meant to be as heartless time did intervene/ now on the lonely stem nearby/the last rose of summer is seen/ in the passing wind I hear its cry/ my heart weeps in remembering the youth that had once been.

    lyics:
    Tis the last rose of summer,
    Left blooming alone;
    All her lovely companions
    Are faded and gone;
    No flower of her kindred,
    No rosebud is nigh,
    To reflect back her blushes,
    Or give sigh for sigh.
    I'll not leave thee, thou lone one!
    To pine on the stem;
    Since the lovely are sleeping,
    Go, sleep thou with them.
    Thus kindly I scatter,
    Thy leaves o'er the bed,
    Where thy mates of the garden
    Lie scentless and dead.
    So soon may I follow,
    When friendships decay,
    And from Love's shining circle
    The gems drop away.
    When true hearts lie withered,
    And fond ones are flown,
    Oh! who would inhabit

    C'est lors d'un voyage en avion que j'ai vu le film "Les trois panneaux à Ebbing", œuvre superbe et j'ai patiemment attendu le générique de fin pour trouver l'origine de la musique 🎶 !

    Quite apart from the exquisite rendition, Renee had the artistic sense to sing all three verses, without which the point of the poem is lost. Many other divas did not bother to think about that!

    rusya'da devlet sitesinde ortak banyo ortak mutfaklı dairede tek yaşayan... odasında bir yatak tek askı, askıda 1 tek pantolon gömlek, soğuk havalar için eski kışlık modası geçmiş bir mont ve pikaptan başka bişeyi olmayan ama başka bir şeye de ihtiyaç duymayan.. yine de sabah erken uyanıp gazete almaya gitmeden önce bu şarkıyı açıp, ortak mutfağa gidip komşu odadaki yaşlı kadının kahvesini kullanarak sert bir kahve yapıp sigarayla içerken kahvesini aldığım kadının dırdırına kulaklarımı kapayıp, bu şarkının seslendirildiği opera salonundaymış kadar iyi hissederek. ruhum hala aristokrat vicdanım avam hayata dair beklentim yok insanlığa dair umutlarım yüce. solistin her notası yaşamıma dair tüm duyguların tercümesi .. tüm hayatımı baştan sona yeniden dinliyorum. ne bir eksik ne bir fazla.. ne olduysa ne olacaksa onu söylüyor.... tabi sonrasında pijamaların bir paçası katlı diğeri açık vaziyette olduğundan habersiz terlikleri giyip ağzımda yanan bir sigara ve düzensiz sakallar dağınık saçlarla gazete almaya çıkıyorum.. merdivenlerden inerken müziğin sesi gelmeye devam ediyor.. sokağa çıkıp ses duyulmaz olduğunda dahi hissiyatım opera salonundaki gibi.. ayılamıyorum..

      You did a good job since the singer's mouth movement and the words of the song matches perfectly. Nobody would notice that but me LOL. I love this song and I am thinking about singing it too. I just started my private singing classes. My teacher is an opera singer , but the way I sing is like the celtic women's style. He really doesn't like it. Now I have to learn how to sing the vowels correctly like the Italian Opera singers. Sometimes I feel frustrated since after I started to take classes, everything I sing now seems wrong although people in real life love my singing.

      Hello lili thank you for your comments yes the singer in the video also a classical singer i think she is Japanese i was a bit cheeky using a bit of her video Lili you should take all the classical learning you can you learn technic and control of your voice you will never get without it it will stand you in good stead what ever you want to do later , the same goes for violin classical lets you master you interstrument , you can sing any way you want after if you don't want to be a opera singer i will have a range in your voice you never had before good luck with which path you choose

      Thank you sir. You told me exactly what the teacher has told me , but I always forget the rules when I sing since I am so used to Celtic women's voice and my voice is quite similar to theirs. I will try my best to learn the techniques first , then I can go back to sing the songs I like later on. I miss Irish songs a lot since my teacher told me right now I am not allowed to listen to it at all. I know in my heart I need to practice a lot to be better. The girl in your video actually is half a Chinese( her mother is a Chinese) and half white. Thank you so much . It is nice to talk to you.
