Great post! Marcus Belgrave is amazing--so is Marion Hayden who I recently saw at the Mich. Jazz Fest. Can't wait for the 30th annual Detroit International Jazz Fest this Labor Day weekend. I love it! Not just saying it 'cuz I'm a Detroiter either. Jazz lovers check out the city especially Labor Day weekend. Not to be missed.
I'm a little biased, as Marcus is my grandfather and have heard and seen him perform, practice, and teach for years. He's a musical institution; may our future generations continue in their journey of music as he's done.
John Monroe, Jr. Marcus is an angel who has touched many many lives. You are so lucky to be related, and to have experienced his greatness first hand, John.
John Monroe, Jr. This was a good documentary. I liked what Marcus said about keeping the music alive. He was the last one to survive from Ray Charles band, and that's tremendous. He passed good music down to others, especially young ones...he was there teaching the younger generation the ropes and that's what this generation needs as well. John, your grandfather was a great man with great talent playing from a very young age, perfecting his craft, and playing for many artists. My condolences to you and your family and keep going strong.
I didn't know of this video before, but Marcus Belgrave is one if the best mentors!!! He is a wonderful horn player and his music is great, Detroit has always had some of the best musicians and I think one of the reasons is because of people like Marcus. Detroit has so much talent, and a lot of the kids have been coming right out of high school and playing with professionals and a lot of them are now are all over the world. A lot of those like Gayelynn McKinney had Marcus helping out but her father was the famous Harold Mckinney, a wonderful pianist. There were so many that were mentioned here that I didn't know he worked with, like Ray Charles...that must have been great!!! Detroit is so full of all kinds of music and musicians that were mentored by Marcus Belgrave. God Bless you Marcus Belgrave because you have certainly blessed so many others with your wonderful talent!!!
@JazzVideoGuy: Indeed, and local Jazz Societies and Workshops, such as the one seen there in Detroit, are the incubators for the next generation of Jazz devotees and artists. Hats off to Mr. Belgrave and all of the very important work he is doing.
The other uncrowned king of jazz in Detroit who's still kicking is the great saxophonist Larry Smith. Larry was Sonny Stitt's protege and if you listen to early Kenny Garrett recordings, his style is completely coming out of Larry Smith. The baddest alto player alive today without question!!!!!
Great video...except for the part where you cut out right before my solo(young alto sax guy). Anyways, Marcus has been one of my greatest influences as well as Bill, Marion, and Gayelynn. I am convinced that if I grew up in any other city I would not be the musician that I am today. Thanks Detroit!!!
@gre2g: Yea, but by now we know the score. Jazz is America's art music, and the audience for complex forms of music is small relative to the size of the audience for popular forms of music. But we who love this great art form are a devoted bunch and that counts for a lot.
