I do the same with my walking sticks some burning and on the ones I find termite trails under the bark I'll do a light watco walnut followed by clear gloss or satin poly, latest one I ran gold blue green and pink metallic gel pen lines down the middle of the exposed trails, then more poly, another layer of color and repeat that about 5 times. Turned out great as some of the metallic distributed all over the cane and the layering from an angle gives the colors a 3d look like some of your projects
