Had a gum graft exactly a week ago. First couple of days were very bearable pain wise - but food was a bit awkward initially to get used to. Then days 2-3 I started getting used to it and eating more, more variety etc. Pain hit from day 3-6 only mainly in roof of mouth as swelling went down on gum, gum doesn’t really hurt at all unless you touch it etc. roof of mouth will hurt but gargle water and salt and take anti inflammatory pills. Anyway… day 7 and everything seems to be okay hopefully but I can’t obviously check. It has been annoying but keeping distracted and still finding ways to eat so I feel okay. It’s definitely not as bad as I thought. Time goes by day by day and I’m able to go about my lifestyle as normal in general from the second day. Just eating is a bit annoying but the sting on roof of mouth when eating is the only issue, that goes away with sipping water simultaneously. And that area is t of concern it’s guaranteed to heal. The gum graft itself isn’t bothering me at all and I hope that means that it’s healing well. Hope whoever reads this has a lot of faith that it’ll go well. Btw… procedure I was completely awake very nervous at the beginning. But after a few mins of closing my eyes and singing to myself, popped a diazepam, yeah I was very calm actually - you don’t feel anything. It was actually quite fun I’d say almost as an experience. The only annoying thing like I said is roof of mouth will be a thorn in the backside but it’s honestly not that deep of an issue. Drinking water and small doses of painkillers will do the trick if even needed
A massive thanks to you for this thorough video, Bronwyn! I now feel much more prepared going into my gum graft surgery tomorrow. Really appreciate the time and effort you took to document your experience. It's beyond helpful. Hope it all healed up nicely for you!
@@imeldacordova7908 it healed up fairly nicely but is still quite a bit receded. The periodontist didn't expect it to be fully covered anyway since it was a pretty extreme case! But I honestly experienced no pain at all, not sure if that's rare but I was super grateful for that. If you're having the procedure done, just know it's really not that bad! Wishing you all the best 😊
I know it's been a few years, but seriously thank you so much for making this video! Getting my gum graft tomorrow and I've been so stressed but your video is the only one online documenting recovery and helping me through!
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. You're a champion for talking about the smallest details. It really helped a lot seeing and hearing someone going through the same thing. I've had this done on Tuesday and you're right, the hunger is the worst. I mean the pain is really not that bad and like you I didn't need the pain meds all that much, but I was irritated all the time because I was hungry and my appetite was fine but I couldn't eat. Lol. Thanks again for sharing this, hope all is well now.
Not many detailed videos of the post op daily care, so thanks for doing this. It is so comforting to compare human experience to others.Day 1: I had 9 gum grafts on left top and bottom with donor tissue (bless those and another reason why I am organ donor). Day 2: Initial hydrocodone (325mg) wasn't cutting pain, dr said to take 800 mg ibuprofen which then made tolerable. Have alternated tylenol and ibuprofen with meals since then and been ok. Did cold packs both days. Day 3: So much more swelling, by eve with same routines before swelling down halfway. Did take nap for hour after tylenol, which often makes me drowsy. Ate egg over easy on very cooked beans on my good side. Bought whole leaf aloe vera juice as additional healing support started tonight.
I’m absolutely petrified of having this done, mine is also one tooth at the bottom front, I’m more worried about the gum being taken from the roof of my mouth, I hate not being able to eat the way I want too, because like you I lose weight very quickly. I’m just scared of the whole thing especially not looking at things or touching with my tongue etc. Argh :(
It's not very nice having food restrictions, but it's not as bad as it sounds and it's over in a couple of weeks. For me I never wanted to touch it with my tongue cause it hurt to move my mouth so that made it easier
I had 4 teeth graft so far I have experienced lot of pain which has gotten worst as the days pass. I'm about 6 days post op and the glue they put over the wound in the roof of my mouth fell off the 2nd day because I used my sonic care tooth brush the directions don't say not to use an electric toothbrush I later found that online. The spot where they took the tissue has been horribly painful with everything. I'm really hoping I don't ever have to do this again all I can say if anyone has gum issues do all you can keep your teeth clean don't ever want gum graft. I have had other surgery's like knees I would say this has been the most painful procedure I have ever had. I'm taking 800MG OF ibuprofen 3 times a day as well as Vicodin 5/325 each night to go to sleep. I wasn't given any antibiotics which I think could be the problem must be infected.
blastman8888 Oh God. I have to get this done on the 7th for 2 of my front bottom teeth. It wasn’t really anything I myself could have prevented though. It was caused by my braces. They even have to realign the muscle that is attached from my bottom lip to my bottom gum because it turned sideways from my jaw shifting, which pulled down on my gums even more.
Just had this done yesterday. I wasn’t sedated though, just had a lot of freezing. The putty/covering over the hole in the roof of my mouth is the worst part so far. It tastes like plastic and makes everything taste horrible! My gums don’t really hurt much at all thankfully.
Follow up: took about 4 days for all the putty to come out. Barely any pain at all and my specialist said it healed perfectly. I was back to eating regular foods 2 weeks after my surgery.
I’m grateful for this video. I have a graft in a few weeks time, and it’s all I can think about most of the time. I have recession on one tooth in particular, most likely due to Invisalign.
Getting my first gum graft in a few days on both sides of the bottom of my mouth with donor tissue, so we’ll see how that goes. I’m really nervous but your video has helped, thank you!
I had mine done 4 days ago and It’s have been pain free. I’m so grateful because I still have the protection on the roof of my mouth. I have been praying to God keep it there, so afraid of the pain in case It’s come off. Thank God It didn’t 🙌🏼 I woke up in my third night with my gum bleeding I was freaking out but I heard Its normal to bleed a little in the first days. It wasn’t hurting tho so I hope everything is ok. I have been very careful with everything. I will go back to the dentist in 3 days and I can’t wait for this to be over, It’s so annoying to eat anything. What’s weird that my dentist told me to brush my teeth after the first 24hrs. He didn’t give me any mouthwash or antibiotics prescription. I’m still kinda nervous about it, I don’t know. Thank you so much for sharing your experience, It helped me a lot to prepare for mine. So I appreciate it. There’s not a lot of videos about this on UA-cam that gives you all the details. Thank you!
Just came back from the one week appointment. The doctor took off the protection of the roof of my mouth and also the stitches. He said It’s healing good and told me to just go back in one month. I was kinda confused cause I thought it was going to be like yours haha but I don’t have a 2 weeks appointment. I didn’t have a plastic on the roof of my mouth tho, was something different. Anyways, no pain and I had an easy experience over all. Very happy!
Thank you for sharing your healing journey. I had gum grafting about 10 days ago over my entire lower gums except for a couple teeth where I have a crown. I did not have the hole in the roof of my mouth because of the extensive grafting but I had to go a steroid dose pack for 3 days after the donor tissue tissue was grafted so I did not have the issue with the plaster. Since most of the lower gums were grafted, I cannot chew at all until my sutures are removed on day 14, but I like your idea of the soft soggy bread in soup, which I haven't tried yet. Hoping that you continued to heal, and I would love to hear your experience when the stitches were removed and how that has changed things.
bonbonzz i was watching this last night just got the procedure done this morning! it definitely helped i wasn't as stressed out just wasn't excited for all the small annoyances that come after
My roof of my mouth never got anything to cover it, it was fine until the freezing wore off and then it stung really bad. I decided to put gauze up in there and that really helps.
I got mine yesterday. during the surgery I felt no pain and even after the numbing went away I still felt no pain. I did not get the tissue from the roof of the mouth though, I got a piece of cadaver tissue instead.
I did not, it felt like a piece of floss. If any pain it’s a quick sharp pain that will go away. Just do yourself a favor, do not mess with them until they ready on their own or you see your surgeon. They can be pesky, but, I assure you patience is worth while.
I have a question for you. I'm on the day after my gum grafting. I noticed when I smile big my mouth still goes crooked as If it's frozen but it's not. Did you experience this at all? Now I'm all paranoid that they messed up my face lol
Thank You . Great Video . Interesting to see the Day to Day Side of it and the Baby Steps Cautious kind of approach you took . It wasn't covered but How long before you are allowed to exercise ? I am an Avid Golfer and Timing as it is , has me having mine in the Middle of Golf Season .....yuck .
Thank you for making series of recovery video, would you please let us know which dental clinic you had this procedure done? I will be back in NZ next month. Thank you. 👍🙏
Did you or any of you had the experience that a white coating occurred on the gums of and around the surgical area after a couple of days or a week after surgery? I've read somewhere that it is supposed to be like that and that this coating helps the gum to heal and you should not rubb that white stuff of, but it also seems that no one mentions this, so I'm not sure if this is indeed normal. Also because of that the gum feels a bit stiff and tingly. (btw. and I had a graft surgery without stitches, the gum is held by collagen stripes)
I'm getting mine tomorrow. I'm Soo nervous. Anesthesia, cutting in to my guns, ahhhh so scary 😱 but you eased my nervs. I know what's going to happen now. Thank you so much!
Well, I got it. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was, it does feel brused. The nitrous oxide feelt soooo good. I'm happy it's over, and I'll keep checking your videos to see what tips I need to survive. Thanks!
You I'm glad it went well! Just go slow with the eating. That was the hardest for me as I love my food but I just stuck to mashed potatoes and soups etc for a while
Thanks! I had eggs, a tomato soup earlier, it wasn't hot, it was cold. My doctor gave me a ice pack to help the swelling. I can't sleep, but I need to sleep. Anyway. Thanks for all you did, just subscribed. Your amazing. 😘
I got a gum graft done in August (on my right side), and I'm getting another one in 2 weeks (on my left side). He took the tissue from a cadaver, and did not take any from the roof of my mouth. I was a little sore where he stitched the cadaver gums around my teeth the first day, but I took a total of 2 codeine pills that completely took the pain away. I was a little swollen for about 3 days, but it didn't hurt. The worst part for me was the inconvenience of waiting 4 weeks to get the stitches removed. I've never had any tissue taken from the roof of my mouth, but I heard that way is more painful.
@@SS-dt1oj cadaver tissue means it's from another person, or "donor tissue." When a healthy person dies (usually from a car accident), then they take the tissue and give it to people who need it. I hope this helps.
@@seanpeters3690 Yes, thank you for responding. I am facing receding gums problem and I was told my gums are thin, so my own tissue cant be used if i need grafting in the future. So probably I may need this same method.. but I was thinking those are lab developed tissues that will be used.. 😊 Thanks again for your time.
From about two weeks after surgery I was able to eat most food, just not seeds and nuts etc. and I couldn't use the area of surgery to chew and because that was at the front for me it meant I couldn't bite. All that meant was I had to chop my food up small, but didn't really restrict what I ate. At my six week appointment my surgeon said I am finally allowed to bite and to eat anything. Hope this helps and hope you have a smooth recovery :)
If you ever have the chance.. I would like a fiver year post op update and a palate update. I am nine months post op today, but, to this day, my palate is VERY sensitive, easily irritated, inflamed or made to bleed. My graft is already beginning to sag, I do sometimes have “phantom pain” sort of in the front area. However, I must add for anyones curiosity I do smoke and tend to have a dry mouth. 🤷🏻♀️ I tend to think those play a factor.
I haven't had any pain or irritation since my last update, nothing has really changed. I would say it probably shouldn't still be hurting after nine months, maybe something to talk to the periodontist about.
fartun hussein hey, glad you found this useful :) it cost me about $1800 (NZD) just for the surgery, but all up including all the appointments was closer to $3000. I think on average it is between 1-2k per tooth. Mine could have been cheaper if I chose not to be sedated so it depends what you need out of it.
Thank you so much for this video. I just had graft surgery yesterday and the pain is better on Day 2 but my left side jaw is pretty swollen. I'm taking a few days off work. Trying to deal with the eating and I'm quite hungry. How does it feel after all this time...does your mouth feel Ok and are you eating everything normally?
Everything feels normal now. I still don't bite into carrots but that's just force of habit now, I'm sure I could at this point. The hunger was the worst for me, especially once the pain went away. Good luck, hope it heals well!
@@bonbonzz Yeah, just got it done about an hour ago. The surgery itself was fairly easy, I was only numbed but it was fine. Though once I got home I started feeling the pain some. Took Motrin though and I'm fine again. I'm just extra careful rn not to move my bottom lip at all since it was my bottom front teeth. Also it hurts if I do at all. One thing though, I didn't get anything to cover the top of my mouth, but it's fine so far, just bled a lot.
Did you start the mouth rinse straightaway? My dentist said that i should tonight, (had bone and gum graft 2 hours ago), but my mouth feels like its burnt, pain is bad, so the thought of using a mouth wash seems crazy to me. Dentistry in the U.K is quite brutal. We get a ridiculously weak, numbing injection to our gums, that faded during my procedure. So painful. Then you only got a option of ibuprofen for pain relief 🥺🥀
That sounds awful! From memory I think it was just the salt water at the start and then mouthwash after a couple of days. I'm pretty sure they said to do nothing on the actual day of the procedure though
@@bonbonzz awww you are so amazing I swear. I have to do a gum grafting in the near future as well. But I am so worried about it l!!! I'm scared it won't be a successful one :'( :(
I had very little pain, it was numb for most of the day after the surgery and then the following days it only really hurt if I moved my mouth too much. Hope you feel better soon! I know pain can vary depending where the site is and what kind of surgery you have done.
thank you for this video !! just got a gum graft on 1 bottom front tooth yesterday and the putty thing feels loose but i’m not sure if that’s just an in-my-head sensation haha. did you use straws when drinking liquids right after the gum graft or only spoon ?
I'm at post-op day 15 and like you it took me a long time to eat simple foods like yogurt or Ramen (30-45 min). Protein drinks and shakes were my meals haha
this video was so helpful thank you!! i got mine done yesterday and they used glue instead of stitches! i have the putty over both the surgery area and the roof of my mouth. they honestly didn't get me a ton of direction on healing/i don't remember everything they said cause i was super out of it. i'm on day two and still experiencing a fair amount of bleeding😬 all of my other symptoms are right about the same as yours tho! only soft foods, not a lot of pain but mostly discomfort. did you experience a lot of bleeding during the healing process?
I don't recall having any bleeding. They made sure to tell my instructions to the person driving me as well because they knew I wouldn't remember anything haha
is there an option to use donor tissue? i tend to use that because it might be less pain but it seems most people choose to cut from their own tissue..
I didn't actually get a choice, I think it's up to the periodontist more than the patient. But I think the reason is that if it's your own tissue it's more likely to take, whereas if it's from someone else your body is likely to reject it
Thanks so much for this video. I finished with my gum graft a couple hours ago (local anesthesia no sedation). I was told I could brush the other areas of my mouth not including the surgical site (not for the first couple days though). I’m watching while applying an ice pack haha😂
I had the same thing as you. And I’m really surprised how your just talking from day one. Cuz I was told I can’t talk , open my mouth unless I’m going to eat or do anything around the house and had to sleep on on a recliner for 4 days . So did you like your results.
I probably should have been trying not to talk to be honest. I was told I didn't need to take any time off work though, other than the actual day of surgery. Results are good - it's taken quite a while, but the level of my gum is now significantly better than it was before surgery
@@bonbonzz thank you for replying! Yeah i saw you got panadol? I live in the us and never heard of that term lol. That makes me feel better. How many teeth they do again?
Girl this video was so helpful but I have a question! I'm on the day after my surgery, and I noticed when I smile it's still super crooked (as If it was numb but it's not) I'm wondering if you experienced that?
bonbonzz Just one gladly. I was really surprised how manageable the pain was after the surgery. It kinda stung for a bit but then it was limited to if I moved my mouth too much.
i had mine on wednesday and hardly no pain only thing that has bothered me is the stitches sticking out and rubbing against my lip and managed to clean with cotton bud and my teeth look back to normal and i got the corsodyl mouth wash and i thought it was gonna be disgusting but it’s actually alright and i’ve been having a lot of soups and boths and soft foods and yoghurts. anyone else bleeds when they wake up? 😖
The toothpaste was just Colgate total, so nothing too special, you can get it at the supermarket. They did give me a special mouthwash though. How is yours healing?
bonbonzz Thanks for your fast response 😀I hope it is healing ok. I did my follow up appointment a few weeks ago but the periodontist didn’t want me to start brushing the area until the end of June. He said it looks good but I think it is ugly. Lol. The mouthwash stains my teeth so I was looking for something else to use. And also how long does it really take to heal? I look on the internet and it says it should be fully healed in two weeks.
Mine took way longer than that to heal. You can usually get stitches out after two weeks so maybe that's what it meant, but it can take months to fully heal. I wasn't allowed to bite on the area until about 3 months later!
bonbonzz I haven’t bit into anything yet. I still cut up everything before eating. Nothing hard. I go back early September for the frenectomy. He wanted to wait to do that.
How long after the surgery where you able to drink alcohol? Getting my stitches out on day 10 after the surgery and I'm curious how long I have to wait
Did you use syringes to rinse your mouth or could I just use a regular cup of salt water to swish around?just got mine done a couple hours ago and damn I'm starting to feel it and all the saliva already building up ;-;
I had my gum graft surgery 5 days ago. By any chance, did your graft turn white beneath the dressing? I’m worried that mine might not be healing properly.
It's white because it's still dead skin. Our gums are usually a red colour because blood is running through them, but because that skin has been cut from somewhere else it doesn't have blood in it yet. Once it heals and has "attached" to your gums around it, that's when it should get that red colour back
Hopefully you see this, but did your graft wind up ok, Amanda? How long were both of your grafts white? Mine was red/pink until about day 3 or 4 and now it is white. Is that normal? How long will it be white?
I managed to push my surgery back by about three years after I found out I needed it because I couldn't afford it. Use the softest toothbrush you can find - literally use a child's brush if you need to, and mouthwash twice a day to ward off infections (infections make the gum recede further)
Nature lover not sure what country you are in but I'm in the UK, I got it on the NHS, I've had it done 3 days ago and we are in a full lockdown. If its possible to get it, best get it done now. Best of luck! God bless x
bonbonzz yeah ! All is done now, but how long did you leave the pallet protecter in your mouth ? It's getting quite annoying and I'm on the second day lol
Lol never mind Looks like you had some sort of different pallet protector. Mine is a plastic mold of my upper mouth that fits over my teeth just like a retainer
Yeah I have heard of those, seems like they are for slightly different surgeries. Did you have more than one site grafted? I had my oral plaster on for two weeks, and yours will probably be similar too because I read that's how long it takes for the pallet to grow the skin back
I don't think it's a good idea for a patient who just got the gum graft surgery to talk a lot like you. You could have made a video after you recovered from the surgery... If I were a dentist, I wouldn't recommend my patient talk a lot after the surgery cuz that will irritate your gums whenever you talk.
It's really wierd because I had this done this last tuesday, and it hurt a tiny bit for 30 minutes the day of the surgery but it hasn't hurt at all since.
Sort of. I was technically awake so that they could get me to respond to questions and check I was okay, but they gave me something that meant I wasn't really aware while it happened and I have no memory of the procedure at all
Everything is pretty much the same as it was in this update. Haven't been back to the periodontist or even the dentist but it all seems good. Gum hasn't shifted up or down, no pain etc.
I'm surprised you had the okay to talk. I was told to keep talking super minimal for the first 48 hours so that the blood vessels would connect to my donor tissue.
you are so precious and openhearted and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for making this video and the one that follows!!!

+doug mar glad I could help! Hope yours went smoothly and hope your recovery is quick and painless :)
Thanks a ton, it was really helpful, did you feel pain when stitches got removed??
I did not, it felt like a piece of floss. If any pain it’s a quick sharp pain that will go away. Just do yourself a favor, do not mess with them until they ready on their own or you see your surgeon. They can be pesky, but, I assure you patience is worth while.
Just had a gum graft done and the information was helpful. Thank you!
I have a question for you. I'm on the day after my gum grafting. I noticed when I smile big my mouth still goes crooked as If it's frozen but it's not. Did you experience this at all? Now I'm all paranoid that they messed up my face lol
I'm probably never going to need a gum graft but I still found this super interesting !
Yay glad it wasn't too boring! Thanks for watching :)
Thank You . Great Video . Interesting to see the Day to Day Side of it and the Baby Steps Cautious kind of approach you took . It wasn't covered but How long before you are allowed to exercise ? I am an Avid Golfer and Timing as it is , has me having mine in the Middle of Golf Season .....yuck .
thank you for this video. i'm thinking of want to do it soon so luckily i found your video
+fujoshi fever glad I could help! I hope you have a smooth recovery if you do get it done
what is the cost for it
I also need a gum graft in exactly the same place. I am also doing research. Thank you for this video it helped a lot.
Did you have it
Thank you for making series of recovery video, would you please let us know which dental clinic you had this procedure done? I will be back in NZ next month. Thank you. 👍🙏
I went through Richard longbottom periodontist in takapuna. I think he has another location in the city too
Did you or any of you had the experience that a white coating occurred on the gums of and around the surgical area after a couple of days or a week after surgery? I've read somewhere that it is supposed to be like that and that this coating helps the gum to heal and you should not rubb that white stuff of, but it also seems that no one mentions this, so I'm not sure if this is indeed normal. Also because of that the gum feels a bit stiff and tingly. (btw. and I had a graft surgery without stitches, the gum is held by collagen stripes)
i’m three days post surgery, how do you guys handle the bad breath
I'm getting mine tomorrow. I'm Soo nervous. Anesthesia, cutting in to my guns, ahhhh so scary 😱 but you eased my nervs. I know what's going to happen now. Thank you so much!
I'm glad I could help! I'm sure it will go well. If it makes you feel better I cried in the waiting room before mine 😂😂
bonbonzz I'm sure I'll probably do the same 😂
Well, I got it.
Hi, what's cadaver ? Tissue from cadaver means? Please reply.
Thanks again for your time.
@@SS-dt1oj you're so welcome, I'm glad I could help. I hope it works out for you 😊
Going tomorrow for 2 one with my gum, one cadaver. I didn’t want the pain twice
i just had mine 2 days ago.... how long was it until you ate chewable/firm foods again?
From about two weeks after surgery I was able to eat most food, just not seeds and nuts etc. and I couldn't use the area of surgery to chew and because that was at the front for me it meant I couldn't bite. All that meant was I had to chop my food up small, but didn't really restrict what I ate. At my six week appointment my surgeon said I am finally allowed to bite and to eat anything. Hope this helps and hope you have a smooth recovery :)
bonbonzz yes i had it at te exact same site! Thank you!
@@bonbonzz Hi did you have connective tissue gum graft.?I know there is 2 types
getting this done in 2 days! did the stitches hurt to get out?
How much did it cost you and do you you know the average pricing? I live in Australia and this video was very helpful ❤❤❤
fartun hussein hey, glad you found this useful :) it cost me about $1800 (NZD) just for the surgery, but all up including all the appointments was closer to $3000. I think on average it is between 1-2k per tooth. Mine could have been cheaper if I chose not to be sedated so it depends what you need out of it.
bonbonzz thanks girly really appreciate it ❤❤
Thank you so much for this video.
I’m getting this done on the 7th. Kinda worried but watching vids helps me feel a little more prepared for it.
All the best! It's the diet that sucks the most, the pain wasn't too bad. Hopefully it will be the same for you
@@bonbonzz Yeah, just got it done about an hour ago.
@@bonbonzz Thank-you so much for your reply. I've been using the salt water, not at all bad as i thought. Thank-you x🥀
Doing a video right after the appointment?Tough chick!
Probably shouldn't have been talking, but I really wanted a useful video that showed what it's all like
@@bonbonzz -I understand,,thanks for the info.Getting prepped for mine.I hope I can be as courageous as you.You know men,,they can't take pain,..lol
I'm sure it won't be as bad as you think. All the best!
@@bonbonzz awww you are so amazing I swear. I have to do a gum grafting in the near future as well. But I am so worried about it l!!! I'm scared it won't be a successful one :'( :(
I just had mine couple hours ago. Did it hurt like swollen pain right after the surgery??mine hurts so bad.
I had very little pain, it was numb for most of the day after the surgery and then the following days it only really hurt if I moved my mouth too much. Hope you feel better soon! I know pain can vary depending where the site is and what kind of surgery you have done.
Karen Zhu how did the recovery go ? I will have mine soon
It's healed well, all the best for yours x
thank you for this video !! just got a gum graft on 1 bottom front tooth yesterday and the putty thing feels loose but i’m not sure if that’s just an in-my-head sensation haha. did you use straws when drinking liquids right after the gum graft or only spoon ?
I just had my gum graft just like yours and I wanted to know how you eat and drink. I thought I would be able to use a straw but I can not.
I'm at post-op day 15 and like you it took me a long time to eat simple foods like yogurt or Ramen (30-45 min). Protein drinks and shakes were my meals haha
I’m getting mine done in 2 days and freeking out, but this video helped a lot thank you.
how did it go? I had mine done last Friday and am still on a soft food diet, have you been able to eat regular food yet?
this video was so helpful thank you!! i got mine done yesterday and they used glue instead of stitches! i have the putty over both the surgery area and the roof of my mouth. they honestly didn't get me a ton of direction on healing/i don't remember everything they said cause i was super out of it. i'm on day two and still experiencing a fair amount of bleeding😬 all of my other symptoms are right about the same as yours tho! only soft foods, not a lot of pain but mostly discomfort. did you experience a lot of bleeding during the healing process?
I don't recall having any bleeding. They made sure to tell my instructions to the person driving me as well because they knew I wouldn't remember anything haha
is there an option to use donor tissue? i tend to use that because it might be less pain but it seems most people choose to cut from their own tissue..
I didn't actually get a choice, I think it's up to the periodontist more than the patient. But I think the reason is that if it's your own tissue it's more likely to take, whereas if it's from someone else your body is likely to reject it
i just had mine done 2 days ago! i was put asleep and woke up in some pain lol
Sorry to hear that. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
I feel u so much
Thanks so much for this video. I finished with my gum graft a couple hours ago (local anesthesia no sedation). I was told I could brush the other areas of my mouth not including the surgical site (not for the first couple days though). I’m watching while applying an ice pack haha😂
Hope everything heals quickly! The whole no solid food thing was the biggest pain in the ass for me haha
How much did your procedure cost?
Same! I just finished my gum graft 2 hours ago and have an ice pack too watching lol I know this is old but funny.
Did the bandage on the top ever come off on it’s own and how much did it hurt if it did?
I had the same thing as you. And I’m really surprised how your just talking from day one. Cuz I was told I can’t talk , open my mouth unless I’m going to eat or do anything around the house and had to sleep on on a recliner for 4 days . So did you like your results.
I probably should have been trying not to talk to be honest. I was told I didn't need to take any time off work though, other than the actual day of surgery. Results are good - it's taken quite a while, but the level of my gum is now significantly better than it was before surgery
I am getting it tomorrow.Wish me luck !
I am not able to talk and i am really scared to make graft failed. How will i use rinse really dont know haha
What kind of pain medication did they give you? I'm just worried to get this done because I'm in recovery
They didn't give me any, but I bought pamol (liquid panadol) which I used for the first few days
@@bonbonzz thank you for replying! Yeah i saw you got panadol? I live in the us and never heard of that term lol. That makes me feel better. How many teeth they do again?
Just one for me
Girl this video was so helpful but I have a question! I'm on the day after my surgery, and I noticed when I smile it's still super crooked (as If it was numb but it's not) I'm wondering if you experienced that?
Yeah mine was crooked for ages! Like weeks
I know I'll be doing this. How long did it take for the gum to heal and how long did it take for the donor part to heal as well?
It was about 3 months I think for the gum, about 3 weeks for the donor part to mostly stop being sensitive. Good luck for yours
wow this was super informative
Mine is in a week! I'm terrified but this is really helping my nerves.
I hope it goes well!
bonbonzz Thank you!
bonbonzz Update: Got mine an hour ago! Still cant feel everything but it went perfectly.
So glad to hear that! I hope the pain stays away, but keep me updated! How many teeth did you have done?
bonbonzz Just one gladly.
I had this done a month ago now. Did you use a special toothpaste & mouthwash?
The toothpaste was just Colgate total, so nothing too special, you can get it at the supermarket. They did give me a special mouthwash though. How is yours healing?
bonbonzz
Thanks for your fast response 😀I hope it is healing ok.
I wasn't allowed to bite on the area until about 3 months later!
bonbonzz
I haven’t bit into anything yet. I still cut up everything before eating. Nothing hard. I go back early September for the frenectomy. He wanted to wait to do that.
Sucks that you have to go through recovery twice :( I'm sure there was a good reason though
How long after the surgery where you able to drink alcohol? Getting my stitches out on day 10 after the surgery and I'm curious how long I have to wait
i think you have to wait until the dentist takes the stitches out
Did you use syringes to rinse your mouth or could I just use a regular cup of salt water to swish around?just got mine done a couple hours ago and damn I'm starting to feel it and all the saliva already building up ;-;
Just from a cup. I was just careful not to open my mouth too much though
@@bonbonzzthanks so much for the input! that really eases my anxiety for recovering the next few weeks. Cheers:)
Im going to have the periodontal surgey done they said they are cutting away my gums im so nervous
Hopefully it won't be as bad as it sounds! All the best for your recovery! When are you having it done?
How did it go?
Hello dear, how old were you when you had all your teeth removed?
I think I need to have this done a few area on my gum 😭 so scared tho...... Hopefully I can get it done in a few years
I had this done 4 days ago and no pain really, but it looks like a flap part of my gum is moving below the graph is this normal, I worried of failure
did your graft fail?i feel like my grafted part is moving and worried of failure too
Does it hurt at all like during the procedure? And how much does it hurt after?
I don't remember the procedure at all. Afterwards it didn't hurt too much, it only hurt if I moved my mouth and then it was like a quick sting
Does the roof of your mouth hurt when you swallow or anything touches it?
It didn't for me as I had an oral plaster to stop the pain. When that fell off I had some sensitivity for a week or so but it didn't hurt
I had my gum graft surgery 5 days ago. By any chance, did your graft turn white beneath the dressing? I’m worried that mine might not be healing properly.
Yep it was white for a while! Do try not to look at it though, pulling the skin back can cause it to fail
How long will it be white?
shimmerdust281 did the white color go back to normal ?
I really wanted to surgery my gums because i have receding gum but the problem is Pandemic 😔
God bless x
I have done gum grafting 27apr how to recover fast plz suggest me
How is your gum graft now?
Just watched after just getting mind done here in Florida. Wow, sore
Sorry to hear yours is hurting :( hope you feel better soon!
Did they give you pain medication or are you okay with ibuprofen? How many teeth did they do
Having mine done in a week Ugh Right before college starts yay lolol
+James Johnson hope your recovery goes smoothly! Sucks about the timing :(
bonbonzz yeah ! All is done now, but how long did you leave the pallet protecter in your mouth ? It's getting quite annoying and I'm on the second day lol
Lol never mind
Looks like you had some sort of different pallet protector. Mine is a plastic mold of my upper mouth that fits over my teeth just like a retainer
Yeah I have heard of those, seems like they are for slightly different surgeries. Did you have more than one site grafted? I had my oral plaster on for two weeks, and yours will probably be similar too because I read that's how long it takes for the pallet to grow the skin back
I feel, though I’m getting mine on the 7th, a week before I start my senior year of high school. At least I’ll probably be decent by then.
I don't think it's a good idea for a patient who just got the gum graft surgery to talk a lot like you. You could have made a video after you recovered from the surgery... If I were a dentist, I wouldn't recommend my patient talk a lot after the surgery cuz that will irritate your gums whenever you talk.
Can you get a gum graft over a crown for the bottom teeth please I need to know
I don't know the answer to that sorry. You should probably speak to a dentist or periodontist
@@bonbonzz does the gum graft look normal at least
Yep, you can't tell by looking that the gum was grafted
It's really wierd because I had this done this last tuesday, and it hurt a tiny bit for 30 minutes the day of the surgery but it hasn't hurt at all since.
That's great!
Did you get put to sleep?
Sort of. I was technically awake so that they could get me to respond to questions and check I was okay, but they gave me something that meant I wasn't really aware while it happened and I have no memory of the procedure at all
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 for your video
Any updates after 2 years?
Everything is pretty much the same as it was in this update. Haven't been back to the periodontist or even the dentist but it all seems good. Gum hasn't shifted up or down, no pain etc.
I have mine on Dec. 9, very scared
I just had mine done last Friday the 20th it wasn't that bad! Don't worry you'll do great!
@@DragesoresX how are you doing now?
I need this done for 1 tooth and they’re charging me $3400. That’s what I have to pay out of pocket. Fuck that
I know right!!! Can you claim any insurance? I was lucky enough to have some help from family to pay for mine
I'm surprised you had the okay to talk. I was told to keep talking super minimal for the first 48 hours so that the blood vessels would connect to my donor tissue.
Jesus loves you thanks for this
Great video
The worst most pointless surgery ever. Do not do it
Nah it’s got a point nd it’s worth it.
