- Today I had my very first root canal. It was a fairly sudden decision to have it done after my tooth became severely painful a few days ago. I hadn't done any research and didn't know what to expect. A friend had told me that her root canal hurt for over a week and it was the worst thing ever. Another friend from work had just had one done last week and had to take an extra day off work due to the pain.
I really didn't know what to expect but my biggest fear was, of course, the needle!
I hadn't been to the dentist's in over 10 years and I didn't realize that technology has come a long way since then! The needle was way better than the huge, metal, barbaric ones I remember from my childhood. Actually, the whole procedure was perfectly fine! No pain, barely any discomfort at all! And it felt like it only took half an hour!!
All in all, it was a pretty awesome experience! And for the price I paid... it better have been!

People who have anxiety about root canals, let me tell you this. I just had one today not a few hours ago and the only bad thing about it was the bill. Relax :) I'm glad I did it :)

I'm about 24 hours past and my jaw is killing me I have to take 4 Ibuprofen and 2 Tylenol. Took the endodontist about 3 hours said mine were really inflamed. I go back in a week for part 2 because he said it was so inflamed I have to get the shots all over again clean it out more. Right after I had no pain rest of the day I took those meds but next morning work up it's really sore.

Just got a root canal, best thing I ever did. No pain...first, I got about 10 injections around my tooth area not too painful but it is a nerve block and you're numb. The procedure was not too bad, didn't feel a thing but they grinded out the center to expose the 4 root canals, they drilled out the roots, measure the depth of the roots, cleaned them, filled them and gave me a temporary crown. 2 weeks later, my permanent crown came in and I got fitted for that. Later that day, I got a full teeth cleaning, gum treatment and now I'm all done. 2 months of worry, pain and mental torture for NOTHING !!!

You'll have have cancer or heart disease in 5-10 years..... Root Canals are the worst thing you can do for your health . Don't keep dead tissue in your mouth

So I’ve had pain For month on my lower molars my old dentist did 2 crowns. Well the pain was still there and I was told now I need a root canal. But the way the endo checked was with Endo Ice and the least response to the ice is the one that needs the root canal. I just hope they got the correct tooth because I am paying so much money😩

You are lucky. I've got a root canal operation yesterday and, let me tell you, it hurts... ALOT! The pain began after the anestesia worn off and it may hurt me between 3-7 days. But it's normal to hurt. Just take some pain killers and ignore as much as you can. It may be less pain for you but as I am a sensible and weak girl, I feel every pain, maybe double the ammount than a normal person should. But... oh well. I like to go through the comments and see that I'm not the one that is suffering.

Root canals don't hurt at the moment but it hurts like hell when you get home and the medicine wears off.
@@winning3329 I have been in your place and I found out why this hurts some people. It's because the doctor is working directly on an area that isn't exposed to air, sun, touching. It's basically just a bunch of nerves, tissue and blood and it's normal to feel some pain because when the guy is working there, he is affecting the tissue which may cause some pain. It's like when you fall down and hit yourself. It may hurt you, it may not. That's what the endodentist told me. After she was done, she made sure that the procedure was done corectly and it was a succes. If it was, the pain shall leave you within a week. Trust me, I too had some pain which didn't let me sleep as well, I couldn't eat and I barely could've speak, so, I know how you feel. Just take some pain killers a couple of days and wait for the affected tissue to heal itself. Good luck. 😊

I got a root canal today and let me tell you... I freaking hate it.
1. When you get the shot (for local anesthetic) it doesn’t hurt at all
2. Pain wise it wasn’t that bad but it was HELLA UNCOMFORTABLE
3. It like when you get cold air on your teeth. That feeling is what I felt for like 40 minutes straight. It felt like he was touching my nerves and I had to get the numbing shot 3 times because I could still feel it.
4. NEVER and I mean EVER look at the tools they have on the table because it will scare the shit out of you.

Okay so I’m back after I finished the whole two root canals and crown procedure and here are some tips and out lines of it ✨
Tips
• fully charge your phone and bring earphones with you❤️
•play rock music or whatever ever music you like
(because one it’s awesome and two it drowns our the sound of the drill)💜
• three to keep from being scared out of your mind by how the tools look just close your eyes🧡
• oh btw don’t forget to to tell them before they start that you wanna put your ear phone in and play your music💛
• the numbing shots are not that bad unless you feel pain already in that tooth that they are being done on ... then yeah it will hurt alil bit but it’ll be okay 🤍
Quick summary of the procedure from the perspective of a smart person who keep their eyes closed most of the top and played rock music on the highest volume that a iPhone XR would allow🥳
• first ask for them to numb you really good you should end up getting about three numbing shouts at first ( and if during the procedure u feel alil pain or feel it wearing off then ask for more numbing)👏🏽
• while the numbing is setting in good this is the perfect time to get your phone and ear phones ready and already put them in ... when doctor says he fixing to start go ahead and turn your music all the way up and open your mouth (and don’t forget to close your eyes)👀
• during the procedure you will probably feel pulling and tugs and maybe hear the drill alil ever now and then but shouldn’t feel anything🤷🏽♀️
• once they have finished the will put a temporary crown on and u go back after a week to three week later and get permanent put on ( I recommend u get numbing then because I did and it was worth it )
• also when u get the temporary crown they will putting the weird stuff in your mouth to get a mold of your tooth and it’s not painfull but is extremely uncomfortable since it a cold sensation on a numb area and u have to keep your mouth closed and can’t open while you wait
*very important*
• on the day you finish your root canals as soon as you leave the office take you two 500mg Tylenol pills and then take two more three hours from that time and then take the other meds they give you later on ... if you do that you shouldn’t experience any pain or discomfort at all✅
*last tip*
• when u go back to have permanent crowns put on I suggest that you get numbing shoots because your probably gonna feel alil pain /sensitivity when they try to take the temporary crown off by wiggling it 🤦🏽♀️...once u do that it should go smooth🍁

I have to get mine soon and I have the worst anxiety of the dentist, so no matter how much they would say it doesn't hurt I'll probably still cry my eyes out later, my teeth are very sensitive and I hate loud noise and seeing those things make me cry and my mother won't tell them to put me to sleep I know it's not that serious but to me it is and it feels like none of my family members understand the pain I'm in when I go to the dentist and when I try to talk to them about it they just brush me off, and while typing this I'm now in tears I hate my anxiety.

I'm so sorry to hear that Charley!! Anxiety, stress, depression, all of those things will outweigh any actual physical pain. I can imagine how you feel and how horrible going to the dentist would be for you!
My anxiety has gotten WAY better, but getting a root canal was still a little bit of a challenge. I realized one if my biggest fears was that the dentist might not actually know what he's doing- maybe his hand would slip or he'd do something without realizing it hurts- so the day before and during the entire root canal I was telling myself, convincing myself "He knows exactly what he's doing, he's the best dentist there is, he's going to do a perfect job, he won't cause me any pain," etc.
Even if it wasn't true, I convinced myself of it just to lesson the worry. Also, I'm not very religious, but during the entire procedure I imagined that there were guardian angles there, one watching over me and one watching over the dentist to help him do the best job he could.
It really is mind over matter! When you're in the middle of an anxiety attack it can be imposible to calm back down, but if you can try to take little steps like this beforehand to prepare yourself mentally, it may make a difference. Easier said than done, I know... when it comes down to it though, your tooth will be so much better off after the root canal, so you NEED to find a way to get yourself through this.

No matter what people say about the post procedural pain, I can't imagine it could ever be worse than the agony of an infected tooth/jaw from an abscess.
I can't wait to get the root canal overwith so I don't have to ever go through deep tooth infection again.

Nilufar Sigari I know I’m late but some people get pain after. After I had my root canal and the numbing medicine wore off, it was the worst pain ever. The pain only lasted a day or two. Some people have no pain and others have pain

Edit: Alright, the root canal has been done. When they were numbing my gums, it felt like a pinch. Not too small, not too big. I also had a little bit discomfort but it didn’t bother me. Overall, everything went well! It didn’t hurt at all😁 It took about an hour for me, better than I expected.

I just had my root canal done yesterday morning I was so scared out of my mind. What I would do is put the headphones on and think of something else instead of what they are doing. I had a very very bad experience when I was 5 years old let's just say I bit the doctor's thumb. But my relief from my tooth is completely gone. And I'm feeling so much better and I'm glad I got it taken care of. It's scary at first, but once they numb you you barely feel anything all you feel is the pressure of them working

UPDATE!! I had to get a root canal done Sept. 2018 and honestly the waiting was the worst. I have some videos on my channel talking about my root canal experience.
Im no stranger to alot of dental work (as a kid who loved candy) it a whole year to fix my teeth. I have caps, fillings, and teeth pulled. I actually have to get another pulled tomorrow. The needle wasnt my worry. Ive literally had a few appointments where I had no idea they even gave me the needle! Freaked me out to just suddnely go numb unexpectly lol but now I do need a root canal. Never had one before. Thanks for your video put me at ease.

I have had about 8 root canals so far. The last 3 were all at the same time. My dentist has 42 years experience. All 8 of my root canals have been painless.

I got a root canal on a very infected tooth and 4 hours later I was falling asleep in the chair. No pain, even when numbing went away still no pain, they took my root out so yeah obvious no pain. I took zero pain Medication.

I just got my first (hopefully last) root canal today. My procedure was only about an hour long. I was more afraid of the needles like yourself. My Dr was super helpful and nice and knew how to talk me thru the process. It's been about 5+ hours since and I'm just now feeling the after affects.
Nadi NAM h hey, I just got my root canal yesterday too. I’m getting a lot of side effects. Does it still hurt for you? My eye hurts and my ear hurts is that a bad thing?
Personally I haven't had any side affects so far. Just some pressure on the areas where the shots were but I'm for the most part okay. I'd definitely call the endodontist again if they're really bad side affects. Don't go untreated if you're in pain!

D Loko 14 honestly, it’s wasn’t that’s bad. I’m assuming it’s different depending on where you live and what’s wrong with you, but I asked her if she was gonna numb it, she said not yet, and then she starts drilling, and I’m like _hell no_ but it doesn’t really hurt and I can’t feel it cus my tooth was dead anyway. when it came to the cleaning part, that’s when she decided to do the 2 injections, which kinda hurt. the worst bit was when she was cleaning it though, I could hear and feel it going in and then pulling out again. but overall, it didn’t really hurt, during the procedure and after. luckily, my tooth only slightly went grey, which is good!

Went in for the first appointment on Monday. Had root canal therapy on tooth 13, a premolar.
- felt numb about 1-3 hours post appointment. Also experienced little to no pain that day.
-Didn’t take any Tylenol or ibuprofen because I felt little to no pain.
-started antibiotics
*24 Hours later:* moderate/borderline severe pain.
-started taking ibuprofen 600mg
-eating only soft foods, not chewing or biting on that side, and not using a straw at all.
-icing that side of my mouth to prevent swelling
*48 hours later:* little to no pain
-Still taking ibuprofen just in case
- Still taking antibiotics
- Continuing preventative measures
The actual thing didn’t hurt but afterwards the toothache pain is way worse than before and I’m crying because I thought it was gonna feel better but it hurts so badly

How is now?
For anybody that needs a root canal, make sure that you get it done by an endodontist, and not by your regular dentist. The endodontist my cost a bit more, but they are pros at what they do. I have had 3 root canals over the years. 2 were done by an endodontist, and one was done by my regular dentist. Never had any issues with the 2 that were done by the endodontist, but the one that my regular dentist did, it got badly infected a year later, and had to be redone by the endodontist. Get it done right the first time by a specialist (endodontist) that does hundreds of root canals every year. Oh, and no, root canals don't hurt. At least mine didn't hurt. The only pain I felt with all three root canals was the minor pinch from the needles at the beginning. A little bit of pain for a day or two afterwards is normal. This is because the tissues around the tooth have been bruised pretty good from the process. But I'm sure for most of you, this minor, post root canal pain is nothing compared to the tooth ache you had that made you go to the dentist in the first place. If you have tooth pain, and you are worried about a root canal, don't be. They are virutually pain free, and you will be so happy when it's done, and your tooth ache is completely gone. Good luck!!

My dentist or her assistant or whoever, is the reason why I have to get a root canal. I’ve never missed a dentist appointment and they always do X-rays on my teeth, it’s either they’re just doing X-rays just because they have to as protocol or they don’t pay attention to the X-ray readings when they do it but I got a filling and after visiting for cleaning after my filings and many more X-rays I developed a cavity in the tooth that they filled and I’ve never had a cavity in that tooth prior so I’m assuming that my filling wasn’t done properly because all I had was deep stains because the groves of my teeth are very deep and the dentist suggesting drilling and filling. After complaining of pain in the tooth that she drilled and filled they took a closer look at my X-ray and said, “oh you have developed a cavity and u need a root canal”. So if I wasn’t in pain I would have still been going there and getting cleaning and them taking X-rays and not even paying attention to the readings to be able to tell me that I have a cavity before it gets as bad as having to get a root canal.

I had just one today, no pain killers during and after. My dentist was nice and pretty. no worries people. and I had an abscess, so, it is pain free and pain relieving.

I had my last root canal several months ago and the procedure was virtually painless -- the pain came in at @$2,000.00 later. The problem is eventually bacteria will set it and the tooth will have to eventually be pulled - it is just a matter of time. So please eat healthy, brush and floss daily, no sugar and processed food, and regular checkups. Good Luck.

LOL @ $2000 pain. I feel you on that one. Definitely motivation to take care of your choppers. My wife and I each had one within a month of each other. Even with insurance, our savings took a bit of a beating that month.
Not true, in fact the reason most Root Canals are done is because there is infection of the nerves/pulp/tissue and Endodontic treatment can save the tooth. Success rate is 97% for Root Canal treatment. I've had two done due to a hit in the face.. one on a large molar and the other on a lower front tooth. They both have zero issues and will most likely last me just as long as any other tooth with no Endodontic treatment. Proper oral care and 6mth cleanings are essential in keeping teeth and gums healthy, especially in treated teeth.

I'm getting mine done tomorrow and I'm terrified. I have a full schedule afterwards too, a rehearsal in the afternoon , all day Choreography rehearsal on the weekend, another chorus rehearsal on Monday, and a concert on Tuesday.

I got a root canal done it wasn't so bad. My dentist said it would be a little tender for a week after, but it actually wasn't sore afterwards at all.
Thank you for posting this. I'm about to have my very first root canal hopefully within this week because it is super painful. Your video helped ease my anxiety about what they will or might do. I hate those old school needles too. They hurt like a mofo. Hopefully it's better and less painful this time around. I do want to ask when you say "freezing" do you mean numbing? My tooth cannot handle anything cold is why I ask. Thanks again :)

I see a lot people saying that their root canals were mostly painless, but that wasn’t the case for me. It was super painful to the point that I started crying from the pain. The best way I can describe it was that it was like that pain your nerve gets if you poke it or bite something hard but an almost constant pain. After I started crying the dentist gave me more anesthesia but it felt almost the same after it was horrible but because he said we were almost done I held it. Even the needles/pink paper fill thing gave a quick shot of horrible pain. I’m guessing that I was an odd ball because when they put in the pink thing in and I made a pained expression the nurse looked at me with a confused face, she asked if it hurt and when I nodded she looked puzzled saying that it shouldn’t have hurt at all. I don’t understand what happened or why the anesthesia didn’t have an affect on me this time because when he killed the nerve and took it out it didn’t hurt at all.
when i was litlle my dentist have removed couple of roots because my teeth are very bad. but she didnt use right anesthesia so i felt everything. it was so painfull i cried the whole time.One of the worst pains in my life. I always thought that you cant do anything to numb the pain but turns out i just had some kind of sadistic dentist. I have to get my canal fixed now and i am so affraid, but your video calm me done a bit.

I had my root canal yesterday and it is not bad at all! Just make sure you go in to the dentist if you think u could have an infection or cavity go in asap! I let mine go on too long so it infected and they have to give you more shots. The procedure was not bad at all and I just took an aleve after to not feel pain. I have a little soreness from having my mouth open for so long but that's it. Do not worry!!
I had all 4 wisdoms pulled in one day. I was so terrified but it wasnt bad at all. Even recovery was a breeze. But the surgeon did say that 2 of my teeth that were next to my molars needed root canals. Now I'm terrified all over again. I havent made the appointment for my root canals and it's been about 7 months post getting my 4 molars removed and the teeth that need root canals are starting to hurt really bad sometimes. Uughhh. 😫
I’m literally sobbing, I’m petrified of any dentists. I’m getting one done next week and I’m just so scared of feeling anything at all during the procedure. IT FREAKS ME OUT

I cracked my tooth, 2 years ago and now it hurts really bad, idk if I'm going to have a root canal done , but I feel better about it!
Jessica Haug it really depends on how bad the crack is and if the tooth is still strong. I had the same problem and my dentist told me I would be wasting my money going for a root canal and just go for it getting extracted.

This video made me feel better. I had mine done a week and a half ago. Didnt hurt at all. It only felt weird when they were deep in my tooth, it felt like they were tickling my lips even though it was the back tooth and nothing was touching my lips lol.
I will add, I did feel sensitivity for a week solid, now it feels way better am able to eat normal, but I still feel slight pain every once in a while. Hopefully, that goes away in the coming weeks

I suffer with anxiety specifically health anxiety and I didn’t feel a thing honestly. I’m so glad I got it over with . So, if you’re dreading it I say go for it you’ll be ok I promise.
Other than the pricks of the needle and the occasional discomfort of holding one’s mouth open for a long time, a root canal is not bad. I had one today and all I felt was a little sensitivity in spots during the procedure. That was it, no pain, so go ahead, get one👍😊

On day 2 after my root canal, It was the worst pain even my gums are extremely swollen. I’ve been taking my antibiotics and Tylenol and my face is some what swollen and tender to touch. Hoping this all will be over soon

I think whether it will hurt or not depends on a lot of factors. Firstly the doctor and how well he knows his job is a thing. Secondly pain is relative what is painful to me might be slight tingling to someone else.
Bottom line is painkillers could fix you for a day or two after which there isn't any chances of having pain.

Just had a root canal done today. Had it at 9am, and it's 11:30pm now. I feel like I got punched in the face, but nothing a couple Tylenol won't fix. Didn't feel squat during the procedure, the sedation included a diezepam the night before and a triezepam 30 mins before procedure, and when I got there, they gave me laughing gas and yet another couple pills. I was conscious enough to answer questions, though I slept through the first half of the procedure. No needles, at least while I was conscious lol, and I felt nothing during it. I have felt a bit drugged up, sloshy and wonky but that's from the medicine. I was prescribed antibiotics and as I said, the Tylenol is killing any tenderness I have. All in all, the reputation of a root canal is worse than the actual thing. No worse than a filling. I was quite relaxed, the dentist did a great job, and I was eating (no super hard or sharp foods, no candy, nothing gluey or sticky) and I was back to my podcast within hours. I was amazed. Not a bad experience at all
I've gotten two done already and the tuf I can relate to is laying down and thinking about other things. For me the pain lasted about two days but it was fine. :)

Do you guys have your root canal procedure separate into two visits? Or completed in one visit? I'm debating between two endodontist now. One will only do it in two visits, the other able to do in either one or two visits.
I just got back from my last visit root canal. The first visit is not that bad. Did not experience any pain at all, except that I got a hot tooth, anesthesia was injected directly into my canal to stop the pain. Post op wasn't that bad, the only pain was biting on it. BUT during last visit, which is today, it hurt so bad that I cried. Especially when the endodontist was flushing the canal, soaking up excess moist in the canal by using a paper point and filling the canal. It hurts whenever something was put into my canal. Now I'm in constant pain...

I am half way down on my root canal first part I could feel them using the fils very slit a tiny little pain but after that I had a week ish of a sore mouth on the side. Three weeks and I get the second part done. Not to bad so far.
Got a root canal today and it wasn't too bad. I asked for the oral sedation called Halcion and that works well. It took him about 40 minutes and I'm tender at the tooth site in my jaw when I touch my cheek but that's about it. I don't feel anything when I'm eating or drinking. I'm thankful to God that we have this technology to take care of her body's like this today. It is a little bit depressing that it's almost $2,000. Thankfully I have some good Delta Dental Insurance. By the way I already had a gold crown put on in the tooth the dentist said may or may not need a root canal and they can't really tell until weeks or months later after the crown due to a crack usually.
Also it matters to anybody after the crown the dentist said that the pain should be minimal but it started to get worse and it was spontaneous at different times of the day or night throbbing like a regular toothache. Then I had to start taking Advil and Tylenol for the pain
