Honestly, my absolute favorite detail of this episode is how Caraxes greets Syrax. There is 0 hostility, 0 roaring and snarling, it's a little chirping and a friendly greeting, despite Caraxes being significantly bigger and more aggressive as a dragon. Because while Daemon would happily behead Otto and throw him from the walkway, he'd never touch Rhaenyra. She's in 0 danger the whole time, and the dragons show it.
Both dragons would fight the biggest dragon, 2nd only to Balerion the dread. I wanted to see how they made that scene, they had to fight in big open field 😁

That's why he didn't want the king there and that's why he insulted Daemon and his mistress as much as possible. Too bad for him that Rhaenyra appeared and solved the situation... 😁
I feel like Viserys should have told Rhaenyra about his plans to marry Alicent instead of blindsiding her, and Rhaenyra's reaction is completely justified, I'd react the same way if I found out that my father wanted to wed my best friend. It was stupid not to tell her.
It is flat out stupid on many levels and the first time we see him make a decision that doesn't place the realm before his personal happiness. Aside from the fact that it alienates literally every potential heir/familial ally he has and only binds him to a house that is already allied to him. It's also a snub of every counselor whose advice he ignored, as well as sabotaging his rekindled relationship with his daughter. It's not just that both he and Alicent hid their relationship but a marriage that wouldn't immediately be consummated or result in a rival for Rhenayra would give her years to build up legitimacy as the heir. By choosing the "kids now" option, he signaled to everyone that she was just a placeholder.
Matt Smith really did a good job portraying his love/hate relationship with his brother. I am both annoyed and enjoyed everything Daemon has done so far. And he does this within the first 2 episodes. Just hope he found his TARDIS soon tho.
I agree, though really, I don’t think there is an ounce of hate towards his brother, only love, arrogant, petulant, bratty, but devoted love, for both his brother and his niece….though with the niece there’s also that little bit of extra Targaryen sauce thrown into the mix. He pushes buttons, and crosses lines, but never too far, never to a point they couldn’t forgive him.
I wonder where he's hiding the pocket watch, and which companion is struggling to survive in King's Landing and berating The Doctor for stranding them here while he plays real life D&D.
King's Landing, Dragonstone, and Driftmark are very close to each other. Aegon was known to fly from King's Landing to Dragonstone and back in the same day, and various dragonriders are known to race each other to Dragonstone and back. Driftmark is even closer to King's Landing, it is an island that is very close to Dragonstone. Iirc, you can see one from the other.
I honestly don’t think Rhaenys is salty, i think she’s just trying to be real with Rhaenyra lol cause she knows firsthand how it feels to be passed over.
But you can't see some degree of i didn't get it why you think you can I would say is 50/50 real honest fair advice, and I don't want somebody succeed exactly where i failed
I liked that they had Ceraxes's noise a bit different than the usual dragon roar, i hope they also do that to other dragons, to make them have more distinctive features (besides the design and color difference ofcourse). That noise isn't loud and deep, but still very intimidating and sinister on its own.
Viserys finally had to make a choice for himself and he chose poorly. The parasite known as the Hightowers will only break House Targaryen apart after Viserys dies.
I enjoyed watching Rhaenyra use dragon diplomacy peacefully and successfully, after getting shut down and shut out by her father and the council. They all treated her as impulsive and hot headed. But when they marched with insufficient force on Dragonstone, and nearly overheated the situation...she pulled up with real strength and was able to talk the issue out. And that was what she was trying to tell them to do in the Stepstones. Just like Arya for a few episodes in GOT, as cupbearers they get to listen and learn. Rhaenyra's been learning council politics for years.
I loved this episode. I thought it was really sweet how happy King Viserys was to get the little dragon statue from Alicent. The best part was the confrontation at Dragonstone. I think the relationship between Daemon and Rhaenyra is so interesting. And the dragon coming thru the fog looked awesome.
As morbid as it sounds, I can’t help but love North American viewers reactions to prisoners being eaten alive by crabs, where I clearly recall, as a child in England, being shown the place where prisoners were chained up to be executed in this very way, and having the process vividly described to me.
I’m English and didn’t know this happened I didn’t think crabs would do that but tbh I don’t think it’s that bad a way to die compared to like the iron bull Etc

Driftmark is an island between Dragonstone and King's Landing, pretty close to Dragonstone. High Tide is the seat of Corlys Velaryon on the island. The Velaryons and the Hightowers are both present during the time of ASOIAF/GoT but they don't play a prominent role in the books so they were not mentioned in the show. To sail there in one day might be a push but it's probably doable in two days if they travel non-stop.

Drfitmark does exist in Game of Thrones, but mainly because of the Dance (and stuff that happens afterwards), House Velaryon has become very irrelevant and weak. It's an island bigger and more fertile than Dragonstone, a short distance south west of Dragonstone, to the point it's possible to visit Driftmark from Dragonstone in a rowboat for a day trip.

You can see that Alisent has her own agenda in her look at Raehnyra when she cries at the altar. She's not a good friend here. She gaslighting Raehnyra for her own goals. Otto himself goes to Deamon so that no one else can tell the story to the king. So he can tell stories about Deamon as he needs it. Just like he has done before. Otto was the one who told what Deamon said on the anniversary of the death of the king's wife and son. Heir to the throne for a day. We know from witnesses that Deamon said that. But we don't know HOW he said it and how Deamon meant it. Otto told it in such a way that everyone has to assume it would have been an insult. But we've never heard that from Deamon ourselves. Everything just from Otto's mouth. Deamon then told the king directly that everyone mourns in their own way. And the fact that Deamon was mourning to the death of the kings wife and child was seen at the funeral. Family is important to him.

Definite shout-out to Paddy Considine's performance as Viserys; his work in the role anchors the show for almost the entire season. You're right to call attention to him more than once.
If Viserys was smart at all, he would have told his daughter about who he planned to marry and avoided that whole scene. It would still have been weird, but not a public fallout... He said he didn't want to estrange her, and then did just that. Otto, on the other hand, is very, very smart. He played this very well.
Driftmark is near to Dragonstone , easy dragonflight away , & Dragonstone is close enough to Kings Landing that a day of sailing could hypothetically reach the place .

yes, the age difference between Alicent and Rhaenyra in the book is 9-10 years, when Viserys marries Alicent she was 18-19 and the King was 29. in the series they make it look like the age difference is even worse.
Otto believes in the rule of law. So he's making the assumption that Daemon wouldn't be crazy enough to kill him openly. So with that assumption, he doesn't want to risk Viserys accidentally dying somehow (which would leave Otto in a terrible position), and at the same time he doesn't want the two brothers to reconcile either. So he's going to go there personally because he's got his little entourage to act as witnesses, and he's going to shit talk Daemon until he does something unforgivable and used that are a pretext to get him sent to the wall by the king. So he's winning friendship points to the king for dealing with Daemon, he can potentially get everyone to be on board with shipping Daemon to the wall. It's a calculated power move on his part. It was never his intention to getting Daemon carted in a prison cell, not with Caraxes prowling about. The thing that is actually enlightening is that Otto recognized that Rhaenyra isn't some empty headed young girl and now he needs to keep her in line as well.

His long term goal was always to use his daughter to put his personal legacy ahead. The question is a matter of timing, had Vyseris already been married and had kids with Alicent, he wouldn't give two shits.
Personal theory Daemon had no plans of living after Dragonstone, he meant to kill Otto and die there doing so to try and protect Viserys and if he survived to kill Otto in a way it would seem he offered the egg and Otto chose to try and kill him. All so he could be the Hand to protect his brother and family. Not really a theory I guess more of a fact I think but it's interesting to note.
"Did they send the Grand Maester?" By the nature of the book, though they don't always stick to it in the show, the scenes are all written by maesters. So if it's an important scene, there's a maester there.
Dragonstone is some 200miles or so off to the northeast of King's Landing. Ser Otto Hightower and his merry band will almost certainly have sailed to the island from Blackwater Bay. Driftmark is the larger neighbouring island, lying just to the west of Dragonstone.
Everything Daemon is doing is not petty and childish. You have to look deeper and see that he is testing his brother and all that surround him. He is very calculated in what he is doing it just comes off different because of his personality.
Dragonstone is very close to Kings landing. I maybe wrong but when the bells are rolled in KingsLanding they can be heard on Dragonstone Drift mark is very close to Dragonstone and does exist in the GOT timeline they even have characters in the book but their in decline basically as they were Targ Allies and not trusted by Robert
dragonstone is not very far from king's landing actually. it's about 420 miles (675 km) by water. if you sail really slow, then around 3 days. but otto was definitely not cruising. rhaenyra, on dragon's back could fly back and forth in a few hours. but I suspect rhaenyra did not depart at the same time as otto's entourage. he probably went a few days before her. so rhaenyra was the only one that you see making it a day-trip. driftmark is the island right next to dragonstone. driftmark and dragonstone are two little islands closest to the mainland where king's landing is.
dragon stone is like right next to king's landing. you can see maps online. btw the leadup to the dance of the dragons takes place for 30 years so the show needs to do many time jumps before the dance even begins. but I think they've handled it well so far
Rhaenyra is now the heir to the Iron Throne and no one on the council respects her and just see it in the scene, Otto cut Rhaenyra when she was talking and Viserys did nothing in that situation If it was Daemon he is already shutting everyone up, mainly from Otto, in the scene with Rhaenys it's Rhaenyra everything Rhaenys said to Rhaenyra is true, Rhaenyra is heir to the Iron Throne and even so she continues to give them wine, but the truth is she's participating in the council, but like Rhaenys said they won't want a woman Viserys shouldn't have married Alicent he made a wrong choice and now there will be consequences for his choice, viserys should have married Laena in the book she is At least Rhaenyra's age different from the series they put a child I don't know why they did that Probably to be more controversial because it's a child, but either way he should have chosen Laena and not Alicent and you'll realize his choice was a mistake when you watch the rest of the episodes.

Someone mentioned that Daemon is not a villain he is a anti hero and that is just the perfect description of his character… he is definitely not evil but he is a good bad guy
Seasons 7 and 8 burned us all so hard that I was seriously reticent to watch this show. But then I remembered. This is based on the slow old man's completed writing. Not some BS scramble to figure out what the ending should be. GRRM writes so compellingly, second in world building only to Sanderson in my opinion. (Maybe Tolkein and Jordan as well). The intrigue, the acting, the scenery. GoT is back, and I have strong hope this one will end in a reasonable fashion, not destroying years worth of character developement for some garbage CGI spectacle at the end. But... Bran still ends up king. FML.

Scavenger will often eat things that are soon to be or close to being dead. It's why you hear stories about prisoners being so close to death that rats have already began nibbling off their toes and fingers.

Okay so season 1 has to cover around 15/20 years worth of content so they need jumps. Also we had jumps like this in the very first episode of game of thrones. We get a raven that says that Robert is coming and then when he arrives Cersei says that they've been traveling for 6 months

3. Lana's Twelve. Even by Game of Thrones standards, that's yucky.
4. Viserys can do whatever he wants. He's the king. As long as he marries SOMEONE, it's chill. Daemon is a prince, he's expected to marry someone of equal status. Plus, Viserys IS given flack for not immediately accepting Lana; but again, he's the king. Nobody's gonna say no to the king.
5. Yes, the king DOES get to choose like that. Joffrey did. "I don't want Sansa anymore, I want Margery." And so he got Margery.
6. Alicent is 15-16, so he can have a baby even sooner with her than he would have with Lana.
7. That much is true, but he felt pressured; so he did what he had to do.
8. Why shouldn't he have married a Hightower? She's the daughter of his Hand, so he knows she's loyal. She's pretty. She's fertile. She's willing. Why shouldn't he marry her?
9. Danaerys was still older than Lana, AND she married a khal, AND that was meant to be seen as creepy.

The show made the whole thing seemed creepy with all those changes

Drfitmark does exist in Game of Thrones, but mainly because of the Dance (and stuff that happens afterwards), House Velaryon has become very irrelevant and weak. It's an island bigger and more fertile than Dragonstone, a short distance south west of Dragonstone, to the point it's possible to visit Driftmark from Dragonstone in a rowboat for a day trip.
That is just not true their bastard daemon waters is the master of ships for cersei and they fought on stannis's side they might not be the strongest but they're not weak

And they've gone from the most powerful fleet in the realm, capable of defeating any other fleet with ease, to being the vassals of arguably the weakest claimant (When Stannis declares), and their traditional role as admiral in that faction is given to a household knight.
@@theshadowling1 they were fighting with stannis during black water, and the head monford velyaron burned in wildfire along with their ships but his bastard half brother aurane waters knelt to Joffrey after the battle and cersei thought aurane waters (not daemon my bad) was hot and so she gave him the position and but he betrayed her after acquiring most of the royal fleet and us now a pirate and more or less controla the stepstones

You can see that Alisent has her own agenda in her look at Raehnyra when she cries at the altar. She's not a good friend here. She gaslighting Raehnyra for her own goals.
Otto himself goes to Deamon so that no one else can tell the story to the king. So he can tell stories about Deamon as he needs it. Just like he has done before. Otto was the one who told what Deamon said on the anniversary of the death of the king's wife and son. Heir to the throne for a day. We know from witnesses that Deamon said that. But we don't know HOW he said it and how Deamon meant it. Otto told it in such a way that everyone has to assume it would have been an insult. But we've never heard that from Deamon ourselves. Everything just from Otto's mouth. Deamon then told the king directly that everyone mourns in their own way. And the fact that Deamon was mourning to the death of the kings wife and child was seen at the funeral. Family is important to him.

Yes, some Targaryen names are very much alike, in this first season there are Princess Rhaenys (a.k.a. The Queen Who Never Was) played by Eve Best, Princess Rhaenyra, a later character named Lady Rhaena, not to mention Daemon (played by Matt Smith) and a later character named Aemond (the two names are anagrams).
Definite shout-out to Paddy Considine's performance as Viserys; his work in the role anchors the show for almost the entire season. You're right to call attention to him more than once.

If Viserys was smart at all, he would have told his daughter about who he planned to marry and avoided that whole scene. It would still have been weird, but not a public fallout... He said he didn't want to estrange her, and then did just that.
Otto, on the other hand, is very, very smart. He played this very well.
Driftmark is near to Dragonstone , easy dragonflight away , & Dragonstone is close enough to Kings Landing that a day of sailing could hypothetically reach the place .

So,in the books Alicent was 10 years older than King daughter(18 and 9,as i remember). So they made her older in the show.
And I heard the King was 28 in the books, which puts them much closer together than the show

yes, the age difference between Alicent and Rhaenyra in the book is 9-10 years, when Viserys marries Alicent she was 18-19 and the King was 29. in the series they make it look like the age difference is even worse.
In the show Alicent has 15 and Rhaenyra 14.

Otto believes in the rule of law. So he's making the assumption that Daemon wouldn't be crazy enough to kill him openly. So with that assumption, he doesn't want to risk Viserys accidentally dying somehow (which would leave Otto in a terrible position), and at the same time he doesn't want the two brothers to reconcile either. So he's going to go there personally because he's got his little entourage to act as witnesses, and he's going to shit talk Daemon until he does something unforgivable and used that are a pretext to get him sent to the wall by the king.
So he's winning friendship points to the king for dealing with Daemon, he can potentially get everyone to be on board with shipping Daemon to the wall. It's a calculated power move on his part. It was never his intention to getting Daemon carted in a prison cell, not with Caraxes prowling about. The thing that is actually enlightening is that Otto recognized that Rhaenyra isn't some empty headed young girl and now he needs to keep her in line as well.

His long term goal was always to use his daughter to put his personal legacy ahead. The question is a matter of timing, had Vyseris already been married and had kids with Alicent, he wouldn't give two shits.

Personal theory Daemon had no plans of living after Dragonstone, he meant to kill Otto and die there doing so to try and protect Viserys and if he survived to kill Otto in a way it would seem he offered the egg and Otto chose to try and kill him. All so he could be the Hand to protect his brother and family. Not really a theory I guess more of a fact I think but it's interesting to note.
"Did they send the Grand Maester?" By the nature of the book, though they don't always stick to it in the show, the scenes are all written by maesters. So if it's an important scene, there's a maester there.
Dragonstone is some 200miles or so off to the northeast of King's Landing. Ser Otto Hightower and his merry band will almost certainly have sailed to the island from Blackwater Bay. Driftmark is the larger neighbouring island, lying just to the west of Dragonstone.
Everything Daemon is doing is not petty and childish. You have to look deeper and see that he is testing his brother and all that surround him. He is very calculated in what he is doing it just comes off different because of his personality.
Dragonstone is very close to Kings landing. I maybe wrong but when the bells are rolled in KingsLanding they can be heard on Dragonstone
Drift mark is very close to Dragonstone and does exist in the GOT timeline they even have characters in the book but their in decline basically as they were Targ Allies and not trusted by Robert
dragonstone is not very far from king's landing actually. it's about 420 miles (675 km) by water. if you sail really slow, then around 3 days. but otto was definitely not cruising. rhaenyra, on dragon's back could fly back and forth in a few hours. but I suspect rhaenyra did not depart at the same time as otto's entourage. he probably went a few days before her. so rhaenyra was the only one that you see making it a day-trip.
driftmark is the island right next to dragonstone. driftmark and dragonstone are two little islands closest to the mainland where king's landing is.
dragon stone is like right next to king's landing. you can see maps online. btw the leadup to the dance of the dragons takes place for 30 years so the show needs to do many time jumps before the dance even begins. but I think they've handled it well so far

Rhaenyra is now the heir to the Iron Throne and no one on the council respects her and just see it in the scene, Otto cut Rhaenyra when she was talking and Viserys did nothing in that situation If it was Daemon he is already shutting everyone up, mainly from Otto, in the scene with Rhaenys it's Rhaenyra everything Rhaenys said to Rhaenyra is true, Rhaenyra is heir to the Iron Throne and even so she continues to give them wine, but the truth is she's participating in the council, but like Rhaenys said they won't want a woman
Viserys shouldn't have married Alicent he made a wrong choice and now there will be consequences for his choice, viserys should have married Laena in the book she is At least Rhaenyra's age different from the series they put a child I don't know why they did that Probably to be more controversial because it's a child, but either way he should have chosen Laena and not Alicent and you'll realize his choice was a mistake when you watch the rest of the episodes.
Actually, Dragonstone is close to King's Landing! King's Landing is on the shore of Blackwater Bay, and Dragonstone is on an island at the entrance of that bay.

Seasons 7 and 8 burned us all so hard that I was seriously reticent to watch this show. But then I remembered. This is based on the slow old man's completed writing. Not some BS scramble to figure out what the ending should be. GRRM writes so compellingly, second in world building only to Sanderson in my opinion. (Maybe Tolkein and Jordan as well).
The intrigue, the acting, the scenery. GoT is back, and I have strong hope this one will end in a reasonable fashion, not destroying years worth of character developement for some garbage CGI spectacle at the end.
But... Bran still ends up king. FML.

Scavenger will often eat things that are soon to be or close to being dead. It's why you hear stories about prisoners being so close to death that rats have already began nibbling off their toes and fingers.
