I felt like it was all impromptu and once Hiromatsu started it, Toranaga read the room and followed his lead with a breaking heart.😢
The scene with Buntaro is a formal Tea Ceremony, in a formal Tea House. Buntaro, for all his other flaws, is a renowned Cha Ceremony Master. Everything was his arrangement. From the poem on the scrolls to the flowers in the pot, the way the mat was placed, and the ritual itself of the tea. Buntaro in the book WAS an accomplished Samurai of many talents. And even Mariko admitted his status as Ritual Master, and was more open with him in the Tea House because she could not withhold the truth without shame after he had perfomed such a beautiful ceremony in her honor.
The real "Buntaro" lived longer than any of the other principals (or their equivalents) and was renowned as a great warrior. I expect to see a good deal more of the character in the recently announced season 2.

@@2yoyoyo1Unplugged My guess is they'll try to utilize what unfilmed portions of the novel are chronologically acceptable, and the rest will draw from actual history. Matching Clavell's writing, however, will be difficult. But bear in mind that a number of the main characters, including Toronaga/Tokugawa, Blackthorne/Adams, and others live on. If the writers are clever, they'll find a way to bring Fuji back as well. We'll see.
HIromatsu's passing hit SO HARD - and I'm in complete agreement with you that the soundtrack can make or break what a scene is trying to achieve - and they have nailed it every time on this show!
The score is by Atticus Ross of the scoring duo of Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross scoring also of Nine Inch Nails. (Who together have scored The Social Network, Girl with the Dragon Tatoo, Watchmen and numerous other scores ) There are very few who are masters of their craft.
I've always wondered if Toronaga's generals had gone along and just signed their defeat would have Hiromatsu then have needed to commit seppuku. I think Hiromatsu knew he needed to do something to get the Generals to believe Toronaga was giving up.
This episode should have been entitled "Buntaro's Very Very Bad Day"

@@darrellhenry9152 I mean; the first season still works on its own. If they screw the 2nd, we can just pretend it doesnt exist - so why not.
😣 I am not hopeful… There is history to follow but that only works as an outline. You don’t get Shakespeare or “War and Peace” or any other historical drama just by basing it in history. I fear that is true with Shogun too. The book is finished, everything else is a blank page.
Great stories draw great actors. Great stories justify large production costs. The Shogun team have the sets, costumes, crew and actors but the curtain has dropped. Season 1 was in development and production since 2018. I can’t see how they will be able to crank out a season 2 and have it not be disappointing.
@SovermanandVioboy is right too. If season 2 is bad it can be ignored. Season 1 stands alone and is great!
