If I recall correctly, Diamond Select still has this legal limitation that prevents them from putting better articulation on their figures in order to not have them compete with Marvel Legends. So while they've gotten better with the articulation they're still not able to give most figures double joints.
@Sethmonster sort of, yeah. But I think part of what keeps a lot of people from buying more Marvel Select is the limited articulation. Their Thor figures look great but can barely move!
@@vgamer11 it's scale more than anything. Legends collectors are sticklers for 1/12 scale. Articulation is the other justification though. Pretty much the same reason they rag on McFarlane DC...
@ReeceHoward06 I suppose so. I collect figures in the 1/12 scale and that's what keeps me from collecting more from companies like McF or NECA. But I am able to justify what I do buy from them if the characters are large anyway, or can fit in with my collection with modification. Marvel Legends aren't true 1/12 scale either, after all.
Marvel Select Beta Ray Bill was a MUST HAVE for me... and seeing in my notifications that you reviewed this Marvel Select makes it a definite ULITMATE MUST HAVE for me! And yes, Beta Ray Bill is one of my favourite underrated characters, especially because of its amazing character design and features! Missed all the previous releases of Beta Ray Bill in figure form but it was worth it because there is this one hell of an amazing figure for a great deal and I didn't miss it! Got even more excited to receive it next month! Super glad you loved it as well and thank you for the amazing review!
When I first saw the thumbnail, I was like 'whoa, when did Legends look this good?' ,and then I read the title. Great figure and great review as always
Just subbed with notifications! :) But, seriously, I'm only just now dipping my toes into the collecting/displaying world, and this is one of my first pickups. I was at Disneyworld this past week, saw him, saw the price point and was like "YES." Love the channel! Grats on 200k!
I recently watched both seasons of The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes on Disney Plus with my son and really enjoyed how that show incorporated and interpreted Beta Ray Bill’s character. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the character.
Thanks for the video Anthony. Your review is dead on with this product. Since the day that big plastic windowed box in all of its glory arrived on my doorstep, I have been a proud owner. For me, the DST Marvel Select line has been a welcomed alternative to the weaker offerings from Hasbro. Likewise, I do not accept any excuses from Hasbro for price gouging collectors. Considering the standards to which ML sets for their products recently, it would appear the crime is pretty much a double jeopardy - more, for less. I want to personally thank you for taking the plunge into the Marvel Select brand. It offers some pretty decent accessories and their catalogue is growing exponentially; Beta, Vision, Red Hulk, and Apocalypse have been purchased in 2023 for roughly $120 USD. Hasbro's X-Men 60th Villain wave for about the same amount. Titanium Man, Torch, Silver Centurion, and Immortal Hulk are noteworthy. I am confident neither would disappoint.
I don't care about the character AT ALL, but picked this figure up anyway because it looks AMAZING. I hear you on the hammer effect being an oval, but in the display it just looks great. This is easily the best looking cosmic Marvel character I own. And for $30.
I first got a proper introduction to this character reading the Sam Alexander Nova run, really enjoyed him in that. He's not a character I'm attached to enough to get this figure, but I can't deny how great this figure looks. I think the varied scaling of larger character in comics makes it easy to see why so many collectors put these larger scale Diamond Select figures into their Marvel Legends display, I know if they did a classic super rich shiny red Crimson Dynamo I'd grab that immediately.
Didn’t even know this figure existed from Diamond Select. Immediately buying. Thanks for the review. Love the idea of the monthly hangout. Last time was surprisingly fun. You’re such a smart, eloquent, funny and genuine dude. Sorry if that sounds creeper.Keep kicking ass, Anthony.
I’ve got the Marvel Legends figure for Bill. For me, that figure is perfect for the character. I think the figure from Select is solid, chonky and for a the price, real decent. A bit too big, but fun and manic looking. Maybe would consider it in future.
We lowkey do need a live stream every month perfect lil hang out. Congrats on 200k subs. And Anthony I think you should review a older neca figure that is just what a figure should be and can be . The neca assassins creed line review one figure and show how u could still get perfectly articulated figures who have a bulking sculpt
I love this design! He's one of the coolest characters in marvel. The fact that he wasn't used in the Thor movie is a crime. Anyone that defends hasbro is delusional.
Some Diamond Select figures also go to Walgreens or bookstores with less accessories for under $20. i.e. I got the Walgreens John Wick with less accessories for $17. With all the accessories it was $30.
I always keep my eye out for good Diamond select figures, normally the larger characters such as Titanium man and juggernaut, as they have a great size for Legends. Beta Ray Bill is a great character, great design. But it is very big. May still pick it up though
DST are embarassing Hasbro with this. And they're already being shown up by McFarlane's DC figures which - as much as they might not be perfect as figures - offer far more sculpting detail and pound-for-pound more plastic than Hasbro's figures do for less money. Hasbo need to realise that if they're going to ask £30 a figure, the same body slopily repainted a hundred different ways with different heads and no accessories isn't going to cut it.
I really wish they had given him an alternate fist hand, it's like the one glaring omission of an otherwise nearly perfect release. I mean, sure, having him a bit shorter, or just the same size as ML Thor would be nice, but he's a freaking viking space horse thunder god, I can deal with him being a bit big.
This figure does look good, I like Beta Ray Bill and even though I would rather own the classic version I have to admit this version looks way better. I agree with your critics, thanks for the review Anthony.
I love Bill and keep wanting him in the MCU. He's debut comic and Godslayer are some really good stories fwiw. His original design is great, I'm not much for his modern redesign, but this one is fantastic. Really captures that Kirby comic excess. Hasbro's product is even more insulting when you consider the rumor Diamond is contractually limited with POA. Marvel license expense my ass.
This is not me being a hasbro shill bc the prices are way too high but I don’t think that select has to pay licensing bills for marvel figures bc marvel select is owned by Disney.
@AnthonysCustoms , nobody can mke sense of their (ML) pricing. Heck, they couldn't even sell out of there current stock of overpriced stuff when they had it at 30 to 35 percent off. Off topic, did you get the neca spider gremlin? Would like to see a review of that beast. About the same price as a deluxe marvel legends, and looks like it's worth more than any ML deluxe figure.
I really wish Select could do more articulation and maybe bring the size down to legends size and they would blow hasbro away, I feel hasbro needs marvel competition so maybe they will do better if they start losing ppl to a diff company cuz atm they are the only place making every marvel character and its like Hasbro: well if u dont buy from us who else is you gunna go with?
I'm sure it doesn't explain the price hasbro is charging for what they give you, but I"d be curious what the license cost is for 6 inch articulated figures like Hasbro has vs. the license that Diamond has (I think they're limited to something like 20 points of articulation and 7in scale)
@@AnthonysCustoms Without knowing the cost, I guess I can't really comment on it. Personally, I don't like to give Hasbro defenders any ground to stand on, so I generally try to avoid making comparisons like that without acknowledging that there could be a very different cost associated with the different licenses. Marvel legends cost so much to make up for all the other shit that doesn't make Hasbro money. It is no coincidence that they raised the price of almost app lines, but had to cut the price of the NBA figures. They paid a shit load for the license and aren't making their money back.
Here's why the price of Marvel Legends makes sense, because of Capitalism and the tendency of companies to profit seek at the expense of quality and customer care. They do not need to put in the extra touches because clearly the line is profitable enough that it is not affecting the bottom line yet.
It's because Hasbro has a ton of employees compared to DST. @@WiGgYof09 the wages of employees do not reflect the price of products, if that was the case, most things would be unattainable. Companies exist to maximize profits to investors.
@Father Pie of course the wages of the over sized staff is reflected in the price. Its all added expense. You think DST isn't a capitalist company? Of course they are, but they are a smaller business and thus able to adapt more and keep costs down. Hasbro is a bloated company with far too many administrative costs and non-toy related costs. DsT is at the right mix if big enough for name recognition and distribution, but not so big that they have redundant departments.
@@WiGgYof09 I mean, it's relative right? DST might have an "oversized" staffing issue. Regardless, profits are a way for CEOs to make money on unpaid wages, so it's meaningless to "legitimize" price gouging, because we are the ones paying the difference. I don't like the inaccurate or lazy paint jobs because the company doesn't care to put in the extra cost to get it right, it's frustrating to put it mildly, and DST definitely takes short cuts too, the articulation could be leagues better, but it's not cost effective. The point being, we the customers are being shafted all the time, because these companies aren't catering to us, not entirely, we represent a portion of a larger consumer base.
They have more staff sure, but the ML line also moves way more product than MS. The point of a big company with lots of employees is that they can make up for it, and make more in the end by selling in bulk (in cases of physical products).
