The reveal of the "Chocolate Room" was not seen by the cast until Willy opened that big door. So, their surprised reactions were 100% real.

Back in the day you had Knife Sharpeners. People who would go around and sharpen your knives, scissors, meat cleavers for a fee. I actually remember them.

@@Gravydog316 It's a good way to showcase your skill is actually worth a damn via the knives being sharp and plain to see so. He could also be delivering them back to the clients who might have flagged him down on the street and then told them the address to take the knives back to.
@@Gravydog316 He would go around collecting the dull knives from customers, then sharpen them, and return them after, sometimes the same day, sometimes the next day. Remember, you are talking about a simpler time when society wasn't so...disposable. People didn't just throw things out and buy new ones. Got a hole in your shoe? Get the shoe repaired. TV stopped working? Call a TV repair man who actually came to the house and fixed it. Socks darned, clothes mended, watches fixed. Dirty cloth diapers collected, washed and returned. I remember my mother would gather all of our dirty clothes in two or three laundry bags. The Laundry man would come, take the bags and she would pay him (I don't remember how much.) The next day four square packages wrapped in heavy brown paper were delivered to our door. Inside were our clothes, washed ironed and folded neatly.

You're exactly right. I can remember sharpeners from when I was a little kid. I can remember my grandma having her scissors sharpened from a guy with a cart.
I like that my guy really paid attention and enjoyed it because Asia loved it so much.

@@Taylorswiftfan13308 in 2002 I moved into the house I still live in, and one bathroom had this crazy, ancient flowered/fruit stripe wallpaper- everyone who used that bathroom commented the same thing- "the snozzberries taste like snozzberries!". It actually resembled the lickable wallpaper! I kind of miss it, to be honest...now that bathroom is a whole lot of beige. At least the wallpaper had character.
One of those rare "kid" films I didn't see until I was an adult, but still loved. It has a timelessness and magic about it the remakes have never been able to recreate.
I feel like part of the timeless quality it has has more to do with the fact that it was filmed in Europe than the time period in which it was made. There are so many parts of Europe that are so old (in comparison with what we think of as "old" here in the United States) and almost unchanging that they seem removed from any specific time period. If we went to Munich, I bet a lot of it would look the same today as it did then.
The way Asia was just smiling throughout this whole movie just made me feel so happy :') you can tell that's her inner child just loving it just like the first time she watched it! This film is truly a timeless masterpiece that pulls you into that whimsical world. Amazing reaction, thank you guys :)
This is still my favorite version. The tunnel scene used to be so scary though lol. 💜
Still one of the very few widely released films that contain an animal getting killed for real on camera. Red Letter Media pointed it out in their Re:View.

It seems to me that what you see in the tunnel depended on who you are as a person. Charlie and grandpa have a good time because they didn’t see the same things as everyone else.

I watched this as a kid in the 70's. I've watched it almost as many times as I've watched The Wizard Of Oz and The Sound Of Music. They've all been on tv yearly for decades.
In the book I believe Grandpa Joe used to work at the chocolate factory either before he was injured in war or after. I know the reason he's in that bed was supposedly because of his war injury and then depression took over and only grew worse after the factory closed. That's why he's been bedridden for 20 years..of curse he's also supposed to be about 90 years old. Apparently the only happy things in his life are Charlie and good memories from the chocolate factory.
One thing I've never seen is anyone commenting on in these reactions is Why wonka created the gobstoppers. "It's for children with very little pocket money." It hints at why he got into candymaking in the first place, to make people happy. The money comes second for him.

Interesting trivia:
1. The line "Not 'til you're twelve, son" took at least 45 takes to film.
2. Julie Dawn Cole (Veruca Salt) doesn't like chocolate in real life.
3. Michael Böllner (Augustus Gloop) had a hard time saying the line, "It's going to cost him a fortune in fudge" because the "dg" sound doesn't exist in German.
4. Filming was done in Germany, and right after the production finished, the same sound stage was used for another classic film: the 1972 musical "Cabaret."
5. The actor playing Winkelmann (the kid telling everybody about the contest) is Peter Stuart, the son of the director Mel Stuart.
6. Jack Albertson, who played Grandpa Joe, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 1968 for the movie "The Subject Was Roses." One of the other nominees that year was Gene Wilder, nominated for "The Producers."
I seen a video of the filming locations and the Bucket house was Torn down after filming, it was just built for the movie i believe

That old man with the cart was a tinker. They were simple metal workers who would travel around repairing pots and pans, repairing and sharpening knives and such. If you needed a special metal piece made, like a custom hinge or flange, you would talk to the tinker.

He was a Cutler. aka knife sharpener. So, while both cutlers and tinkerers may be skilled craftsmen who work with their hands, they typically focus on different types of objects and use different techniques and materials in their work. Tinkerer/Tinker is more or a repair man.
No child (or adult) should go through their life without seeing this TRUE Classic movie,

I was in elementary school in the mid 80’s and we had to read the book in school and then our teacher let us watch this movie after we finished reading the book. It is one of my childhood favorites along with being one of my favorite books.

While they don't actually act together.Prior was one of the writers for Blazing Saddles.
None of the other Wonka films even come close to this classic masterpiece.
Gene Wilder actually yelled at “Charlie” as an improvised scene to get an actual shocked reaction from him. It worked.
They DID rehearse it, mind you, but Gene rehearsed it as kind of "disappointed," before performing it as "angry." Peter Ostrum's reaction is indeed genuine.
The story goes that Gene really, REALLY wasn't looking forward to doing that, as he and Peter had become friends during filming.
As a grown-up, some of the scenes really hit different. Wonka's sarcasm when the kids break the rules. His frustration when it looks like his big plan blew up in his face. His utter joy when Charlie proves himself at the end. It's not just a beautiful fantasy for kids, it's a an adult's dream too.
I like how bad people see it in a certain grown up scammer kinda view. New things like osha/british equivalent and such were being invented back then so he was giving it away then gonna dip to not face any of the new laws.
Thinking about it adds a bit more to his 'truth or lies' just like the roll at the start.
I used to call my sister an Oompa Loompa,,,,she HATED it. 🤣🤣🤣👍
We call a girl at work a garden troll cuz that's the shape she has lol! Not to her face, just refer to her by thst name at home!
When this came on TV every year, we always loved that the oompa loompas said to blame the mother and the father. We kids loved that. And I remember thinking the boat ride was soooo scary.

As a kid I always loved that it was made very clear throughout the story that every awful child was followed by an equally awful enabling parent. Roald Dahl was such a gem. ❤
The boat ride is still scary or creepy
I'm an 80s baby and this is a movie I grew up watching. It was always coming on cable on some channel or another, and we'd watch it every single time. And you're right, it is total wish fulfillment for kids. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the other movies. The Depp one is a remake, and the other is supposed to be a prequel. But this movie is an untouchable classic.

Growing up in the late 70's early 80's, my parents were managers of a Stuckey's store. Stuckey's had their own brand of candy. We lived on the property. I literally had truckloads of candy being delivered to my house. (Ocassionally we had to help unload the trucks 😂)
This is my absolute favorite movie period! This is my FAVORITE movie!!! I love it. This movie always makes me happy. I love Gene as Mr Wonka. His eyes were always so sweet and kind. Gene is the ONLY Willie Wonka I will ever acknowledge.

The whole scene of where Mr Wonka comes out limping with his cane before he falls down, rolls and springs back up again, was all completely improvised. Plus that was also the first time the child actors saw Gene Wilder too. They didn't see him until he came out them doors.
So their confused and amazed facial reactions were genuine.
I saw this when I was 11. Thank you two for taking me back and putting a smile on my face as I had in 1971!
Asia!!! you simply must see the Wizard of Oz!! For people in my age range its our Willy Wonka. I watched it with my brothers and sister setting on the couch hiding behind my Dad when necessary. I think when you watch a great movie as a child a little of the magic of that moment stays with you. There are two more Wonka movies, one starring Johnny Depp came out in 2005, thought it was pretty good, the new one released last year stars Timothy Chalamette which I have not seen.
The whole cane scene and the boat tunnel scene was improvised by Gene Wilder and no one knew so the reactions were real
Childhood favorites? This one, Pee-Wee's Big Adventure(1985) and The Rescuers Down Under(1990) are at the top of my list

Since you asked, the Tim Burton remake called CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (2005) is worth a watch; it has great style and design, but for me it doesn't have the charm. The most recent is a prequel to the one you're reacting to in the above video... and I loved it!!! WONKA (2023)... it's exceptional.
It's more like the book in many ways, not so much plot but style.
While it might not have the family charm of this movie Charlie and the chocolate factory is much closer to the original book which itself was pretty dark. So dark in fact he had to remake the Oompa Loompas and reprint his books recalling the originals.
@@Yugioh420 I appreciate darkness in kids' stuff. I enjoyed CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY... even loved parts. It's just one of those that I only need to rewatch once per decade or so. WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY is something I could happily rewatch annually.

Grew up in the 80s and we saw this sooo many times. It wasn’t until I was an adult when I read the book.
Cheer up Charlie is my favorite song but they’re all great. Happy to see you both enjoy it.
By the way Asia the film “Wonka” that came out this year, I saw it, brought me to tears- MULTIPLE TIMES. The character is playing Wonka from this film, just a younger version (as he is settling into the city). The film had absolutely no right to be as good as it was 😂🤣 (It explains Slugworth, The Golden Tickets, and Where the Coin Charlie found Came From)
The movie was a representation of some of the 7 Deadly Sins. Verruca is Greed, Augustus is Gluttony, Mike is Sloth, Violet is Pride, and I believe early movie Charlie was either Envy or Lust or a mix of both.

The gentleman with knives and cleavers was a Tinker. They were members of the Roma a.k.a Gypsies. They traveled from town to town, sharping knives and other tools, and repairing pots and pans, in Europe
Willy Wonka candy became a brand AFTER the movie was successful. It didn't exist before the movie came out. The movie was based on the book "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. Saw this as a kid when it came out, and like Asia, I didn't really grasp what it was about, until many years later and watching it as an "adult". I'm still a kid, at heart.

Yes!! He was in that bed for years when he could’ve been at work helping his family. Had that lady working day and night to care for 6 people. You see how fast he got up to go to the candy factory??? 😂 keep that same energy and go to work Grandpa Joe!
The guy with the knifes is a Knife grinder in the past people got there knifes sharpened by people like that instead of buying new knifes from china.

I am a 62 year old father of 4 and grandad of 2. I saw this movie when I was 9, my kids love it of course. Now that they are grown this movie hits me right in the feels. One of the best children’s movie ever
I’m 50 and I have literally watched this movie every single year since first seeing it around age 6 or so, almost always during the holidays. It’s a requirement, along with the Charlie Brown holiday episodes.

I was 3 when this came out in 71’ .. it’s been my most favorite movie ever since. Now I am 56.. still Love andAdore so much, to this day.I don’t ever remember my life without this movie being in it. Fun fact : the kids were not allowed to see the inside of the factory, so their reactions were real.
As a 9 year old in 1971, I can testify: Fantastic movie for kids, and such a classic. After we saw it, my sister and I bought the Charlie books by Roald Dahl and took turns reading them out loud to each other.
The BOOK came out in 1964, but my first experience of that was when our 3rd grade teacher (1968) read it to us, a little every day during story time. I remember sharing what I remembered every day with my neighbor buddies. I was 11 when the movie was in the theaters the first time. So glad you both now know.
On my DVD of this film it has a Special Features part you can watch and get more background on this film. The bratty Verruca was named after an ugly skin growth called a" Verruca" - that is hilarious. Way back in my childhood, this film only came on television once a year. There was so much excitement in the days leading up to the broadcast - it really was an annual, special event. Thanks for the reaction - the ending still brings a tear to my eyes.

This was my favorite movie when it came out as it was filmed in Munich Bavaria Germany where I was born 60 yrs ago & still watch it when it comes on TV...been in the States {Georgia} since 1973 ✌💖☮

You have to be kidding me!!! BJ has never seen this movie?! This was the first movie I’ve seen with Gene Wilder, and I fell in love with it immediately. Believe it or not, this movie was initially a Box Office failure.

This is a movie I watch anytime it's on. I crack up. BTW, the movie you were referring to was Young Frankenstein with Gene Wilder. If you ever travel to South Florida, Hoffmans Chocolate is a place where you can watch them make chocolate & it's fun in December there in Lake Worth area.
The story of the making of this film is almost as great as the film itself. The movie was made in cooperation with a candy company and the Wonka bars and the film were going to come out at the same time, but the maker of the chocolate messed up and the bars melted at room temperature and couldn't be sold. So the film had to come out all by itself and it bombed.

When they rehearsed the scene where Mr. Wonka tells Charlie and Uncle Joe that Charlie doesn't get the life time supply of chocolate because they stole the fizzy lifting drinks, Gene Wilder played the scene as more disappointed than angry, so when they filmed the scene and Gene Wilder starts yelling at them, Peter Ostrum's and Jack Albertson's scared reaction was real.
I remember I read the book before I ever saw the movie so it was really special except that It didn't follow the book but that didn't matter because it was still cool in itself. . Now when you see the new remake then you'll see the way the book was written... I've only seen the first remake which is fantastic. I don't know about the second...

I love this movie! Notice every time the kids were about to do something Willy Wonka told them not to do then they did it and the parents were demanding Willy to stop them his response was dark humor. Slugworth visited all the children that won the Golden Ticket told them about the Everlasting Gobstopper as a front to observe the children’s weaknesses like Violet chewed gum, Augustus eats everything out in front of him, Mike liked to watch tv and Veruca was greedy because her parents gave her everything she demanded. Charlie, on the other hand, was the only one out of the five children there that was nothing like the other four: he was humble to have won the Golden Ticket, respectful knowing not to be unruly and gave the Everlasting Gobstopper back to Mr. Wonka because he wasn’t greedy and willing to walk away just happy to have been inside the chocolate factory. The guy that said people go in but don’t come out was a legend and made up and his profession was sharpening knives for people in town which is why he had that cart of knives and cleavers. My late grandmother when she was young saw her mother pay a guy to come to the house to sharpen the knives until people were shown how to sharpen their knives themselves. That was a thing a long time ago. But overall this is still one of my favorite movies along with The Wizard of Oz. Loved it so much that I auditioned and got the chance to play The Cowardly Lion in my high school production, my favorite character of all time! There is Charlie and The Chocolate Factory starring Johnny Depp as the grown up Charlie but the Oompa Loompas is played by one small actor who was CGI’d multiple times which disappointed me because in Willy Wonka they were all different actors dressed in different color outfits. Then there’s a new remake and I’m not a fan of remakes which compared to the original is disappointing and did nothing to improve the story. Then again, the original movies captured something that can not be remade or duplicated like the scope of how the movie was shot or the style of the time the movie was made that seems out of place today if remade again. In my opinion, the classics should be left alone as is: no remakes, no origin story or sequels but that’s just me. If you want to take a road trip to a chocolate factory both of you and your children should visit Hershey, Pennsylvania. The whole town smells like chocolate and you can eat candy and try some delectables you won’t find anywhere except at the factory plus there are rides to go on if they are operating depending on the weather the day you go. There have been two more. One with Johnny Depp as Willy Wonka and a most recent one.
This movie was funded by a candy company that wanted to use the Wonka name, so it was a big commercial. But when they launched the candy, it didn't sell very well. They only two chocolate bars with the Wonka name. The brand was closed, and that was it. But we still have the film. :)
"Slugworth" being an employee of Wonka's explains how he could be right there each time a ticket was found. The tickets were being tracked somehow. It also explains why we never saw the "fourth winner" who turned out to be a fake.
According to the "making of" video, the reason the chocolate didn't sell very well was because the recipe they used left the chocolate bars with a lower melting point; they got melty and squishy on the shelves instead of staying solid at room temperature.
The Wonka brand is still around. Nerds, Gobstoppers (not everlasting), SweeTarts and Laffy Taffy. Just no chocolate bars.
@@Sledg0matic It was revived, yes. But it failed when it was first launched in the 70's, and wasn't around for quite a long time.
@@Serai3 The movie tie-in candy bar from '71 itself was a flop, yes, and the "Everlasting Gobstopper", released in '76, didn't have the actual Wonka name on it until 1980, but that was still 38 years of Wonka on the market before Nestle killed it.
BJ's inner child was showing this whole reaction. I don't think I've seen such amazement in his eyes before this movie. Asia being all smiles reminds me of how I felt when I first watched this movie. Great reaction 👏🏻👏🏻
One of the very few reactions to leave in the line "So shines a good deed in a weary world" after Charlie returns the everlasting gobstopper. It's beautiful, and it gets me every time.

Gene Wilder was so incredible. His performance in this was absolutely brilliant.
He was utterly perfect.
This movie has so many life lessons. When I taught elementary school I showed this every year. It’s a fun movie and then we could do lessons on the real messages in the movie.
The best theory i heard for why wonkas office is in half is because wonka is George from harry potter and when Fred died he lost half of him self, closed the joke shop and focused on candy

This is one the few movies where a significant departure from the source material made for an improvement. Gene Wilder's portrayal of Wonka was over-the-top, and it made for a much better movie. Plus, Charlie had to pass a moral test in order to inherit the factory, and not just outlast the others.
And the orange Oompa-Loompas were an improvement over the original Pygmies.
Roald Dahl sure was salty about it, too.
I've probably seen this movie more than most people. When I was a kid my father ran the Harlem theater in Austin, Texas. It was a single screen indoor movie theater. We played this particular movie for three weeks. And as a kid I had nothing better to do than sit in the auditorium all day watching whatever movie we happened to be playing at the time.
We played this movie four times a day for three weeks. So I could almost say all the characters lines for every scene. All my friends thought it was great that I just watched movies all day. But they didn't understand just how boring it was to rewatch a movie several times a day for weeks sometimes.
However this is still one of my favorites.
i believe granpa did work at the chocolate factory over 20 years before it was the biggest factory in that small town

I watched this movie when I a little boy and it has been one of my favorites. There were several great children's movies that were adapted from books. "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" is another one that I still love. These movies had great stories for kids, great characters and wonderful music/songs. Interesting note from the movie was that when they first entered the chocolate room, none of the actors knew what it looked like, so their reaction is genuine.
