Hausermann just got my order last week for a bellina among others, a decision based on Dani’s info and photo and on availability at Hausermann. I bet they sell out of both kinds of bellini by two days from now since their url is linked here. I’m glad for them, at least 4 generations of Hausermanns making orchid hybrids in that steam system heated old-fashioned greenhouse complex.

Orchids by Hausermann’s is great! They have amazing greenhouses in Villa Park, IL. Going there is so much better than using the web. They have so many orchids that are not listed on the website and their greenhouses go on and on. The Cattleya collection and variety is stunning. If you are going to the Chicago area, I really recommend making some time to visit...
Natt’s Orchids in Naperville, IL is another great resource. Natt’s Orchids has a wide selection of rarer vandas, paphs, species, etc. Really worth a visit or browse. I can’t tell you how much money I’ve spent at these fine orchid houses! I was so excited to see Dani on Hausermann’s website just days after I received 8 new plants from them!... The oncidium Sharry Baby they shipped me is spectacular! 😎

I live in Canada and I found the best time&place to buy orchids is the last afternoon of the orchid show (if you are not looking for specific varieties). When the orchid show is close to the end, most vendor will put a discount on their orchids. The best part is the orchids which are in bloom would be discounted mostly since the bloom would suffer in transportation and the vendors are willing to sell them as soon as possible.

If you're on the U.S. East Coast, Carter and Holmes is a great orchid grower with a large variety of Cattleya and a steady mix of Vanda and Oncidium. Prices for orchids today are still quite low compared to historical prices of say 60 years ago. And one reason why orchids can be found in the EU at affordable (to the masses) prices is that plants can be mass produced in southeast Asia with extra low labor costs and then shipped en masse. There are large floriculture companies in the EU, like Anthura, that mass produce phals by the tens of thousands per clonal variety, with highly automated growing facilities that allow them to manage labor prices.
Here in the US we have lost a great many orchid nurseries over the past 60 years. While there are many reasons for this, one of them is that a fully burdened cost of an adult blooming orchid, grown completely in the US, drives the price to be much higher than importing phals en masse from SE Asia. The few remaining large breeding houses, like Carter and Holmes, or H&R, sell almost always seedlings, that can be sold at prices people can afford. If such nurseries grew plants to maturity and sold plants, say Cattleyas, in bud then they'd have to charge prices that would be much higher than their seedling prices.
Automated growing and inexpensive cloning have allowed the democratization of the orchid hobby. 100 years ago it was the hobby was the domain of the wealthy, which is why orchids became a symbol of affluence. Even today, it is common to see orchids placed in interior design or real estate photos, as a hold-over from this history of orchids meaning affluence.

I’m really fond of buying discounted/decaying plants locally and trying to save them. I’ve only found cattleya and phals locally. The phal I got a few months ago had both crown and root rot and I wasn’t able to save it. :( But I was able to save a cattleya that lost all of its roots using your ICU method and she seems to be out of the woods.

Thanks so much for listing vendors in the US! Some of these I hadn't seen before. I have been buying from vendors on Etsy mostly.
You definitely influence me! :) Watching your videos and learning how to take care of my orchids has turned me into an enthusiast. Since I started watching your videos I went from 2 phals that were gifted to me to 12 orchids of various types. I am dying to find a Yang Yang Blueberry and yes, the Sedirea Japonica has been on my list for a while.
One thing to beware of is making sure you understand what size orchid you are buying. Sometimes I'm so busy looking at the picture of the mature orchid I forget I'm buying a seedling.

I'm very fortunate because I live about ten miles from Orchidweb. I buy plants from their website and I drive over for curbside pickup. I think I've bought around twenty plants from them so far -- I just ordered three mini-orchids just a few minutes ago in fact.
The plants are always completely amazing and often will go into spike even when I buy them "not in spike". And so far I've not encountered any pests on any of them. I do hope that continues.
I recently bought a Bangkok Sunset from Mote's orchids in Florida. There was a bit of a shipping delay due to winter weather but it arrived in decent shape (as far as I can tell). In the box I found that they had sent me another one -- Two for the price of one! The shipping was really expensive but because I couldn't find one elsewhere I decided to just pay the shipping price. I ended up selling the extra one as I don't have room for two of these. I'm looking forward to when he decides to bloom.
So far, those have been the only two places I've bought orchids from (with the exception of a few Phals I bought at local garden centers).
Thanks Danny for all your videos, help, and inspiration. The Minnesota Orchid Society also appreciate you as I've discovered. I'm also totally blaming you for the all the orchids I've bought since subscribing to your channel! :)

Hey Danny, I listened with interest to your thoughts on being an influencer. I didn't think about the hype side of the matter, but I definitely thought of you as I was buying one of the orchids you have shown recently. I just imagined this small nursery I bought from, receiving various visits and orders on that specific plant and wondering: what is going on here?! And, of course, I didn't stop with just one plant, because why not add one item, since I was already paying for shipping? So, I ended up going for the monachica.
Now, I am not telling you this to make you feel responsible for what I buy: the opposite! I am just saying this to stress that we as viewers, consumers and growers should feel more responsible for what we buy! I have experienced this myself, with some pretty shallow shopping, fortunately on skincare, so that wasn't too much of an issue. The effect it had on me was to make me more aware of the way I get enthused by shopping and the influence of UA-camrs and Instagrammers. And I started being more cautious.
So, all this long message to tell you that I'm happy to watch the videos you make (as well as Annabel Minton's, Deanna's, etc etc) and get inspired by the magic ability you have in growing these incredible plants.
    Yes, that''s a long message :-/
Final note: I thought that it could be great having a Google Spreadsheet with the various nurseries mentioned by you and the channel's viewers. This would have been so useful a couple of weeks ago when I was searching for a French nursery!
Aaaanyway... thanks for teaching us so much!

Hi, I'm from Italy and I've ordered from Celandroni Orchidee and Varesina Orchidee! Beautiful packaging in both cases. Delivering in Italy takes generally 1-2 days from the moment they pack the ordered plants; they send only at the beginning of the week, so that the orchids arrive before the weekend and do not have to stay in post offices. I don't know how long it takes to get their plants if you live in other UE-countries...
Orchids from Celandroni Orchidee have good prices and are beautiful plants with generally two directions of growth (I've only bought Cattleya hybrids). However I agree with Britta on flowering/not flowering size: in some cases the plants are "theoretically" flowering size, but they actually bloom after one year and not because it's not their blooming season, but because they're still a little bit young; other plants are instead fully adult size and you can clearly see that they have already bloomed.
Orchids from Varesina Orchidee are more expensive, but they are huge, well established, have already bloomed and always have two or more directions of growth (I've ordered Oncidiums hybrids and a Cattleya hybrid).
There are at least other 3-4 nurseries in Italy with good websites and promising photos, but I've never ordered from them.

Hi Danny My favorite was purchasing from orchid shows ( expos ). Walking into one can feel the air of excitement and scent of the blooms. My favorite nursery here in the Northeast US is Marlow with heathy orchids and excellent packing as well as from Mountain Orchid, only the Cuthbertsonii didn’t like me. Trader Joe’s has reasonable grocer variety phals and in great condition usually, if anyone is into phals. FYI 👀. Think nurseries shouldn’t improve their markup when species are popular, good way to lose customer following.

For EU, you can try yihcheng dot com and email them directly. It's a Taiwanese breeder who joins plants exhibition yearly in Germany (check out their event calendar). Ask them for complete list of plants (they have more than what is shown on their website). They will bring your plants with them to Germany. From there, they will ship your plants to your address. They will take care of paperwork for your plants. So be advised that the end price will be rather higher. But it's worth it if you're looking for something specific, unavailable locally or regionally.

Price is also very dependent on the size and age of the plant. A Bellina seedling will cost about $15 in my region, but a mature plant that is very large will cost upwards of $50.

Seattle Orchids offers a really good selection in the US. They have sales throughout the year, and a free membership program that offers discounts and free shipping in the US during special promotional periods. They pack their shipments really well, and give you options to require a signature on your package so no plants are left in the heat or cold while you’re not home. Highly recommend!

My favorites are: Akerne in Belgium, Orchidz.nl, Orchidsdeluxe, Lansbergen in the Netherlands, Lücke, Wichmann, Schwerter and Blue Cattleya in Germany. Will never buy from Claessen again. Wubben has nice orchids, but is quite expensive sometimes. With eruflora, Ecuageneral and the Aisan suppliers you can have marvelous plants hen buying at a show. Would not order online.

Hi Danny, since the pandemic, I have watched prices of almost anything to do with houseplants rise like mad. I try to stay on a budget, but I've recently paid $75.00 for 4 different orchids. I'm in the USA and always purchase from Angels Orchids (Amazon Seller); Brookside Orchids; Logee's Greenhouse and Orchidweb, all awesome nurseries with healthy plants and reasonable prices! Totally enjoyed your presentation! 😍

I agree with you even orchid prices are going up. I went to a nursery where I live and I was shocked by their prices, a phal was listed as $80+. A small cattleya ranged from $40 for a small plant. I just walked out.

@@hybrid2003 I've only ordered online (they're in CA & I'm in TX). I'd love to visit someday! The shipping can be expensive, however my plants never arrive mangled & are secured really well. I know there's a youtuber who filmed a tour of their nursery, but I don't remember his name.

@@stephaniesands119 When I first ordered from them I lived about and hr away from the place but didn't know that they were local. When I first ordered from them online I wasn't crazy with the color and aromas of the Orchids I ordered. It looked better online vs. real life. Sense then I moved about 30 mins away. I decided to drop by to hand pick the orchids i wanted. Well the place isn't really set up for retail. If you want a certain orchid, you have to order it online and pay. Then come pick it up. They pick out the orchid for you before hand. When you get there they refund you the shipping. If you're adamant about picking the orchid your self like me (I wanted to know that I like the scent of the orchid before I buy.), you're only allowed to go into 2 of their green houses. So hopefully, there's an orchid in there that you like. Plus the price is a lil more expensive if you want to hand select it your self. For my experience, it was a pain learning this when I got there. But it was worth the extra money picking out the one I wanted.

Knowing a little bit about wholesale pricing, the typical markup for retail pricing is 3 to 4 times the wholesale price. And that’s for common, mass produced plants, not rare specialties. Mass produced phalaenopsis plants are marked up much, much more.

There are 3 good nurseries that I buy from in British Columbia,Canada...Forestview Gardens ...prices are very good, they sell mostly seedlings or very young plants ..they pack the plants with care & in my experience have shipped them out within just a few days from ordering. TgOrchids ...also fair prices..they have sizes that go from seedlings to in spike ..good care is also taken with packing & shipping again is within a few days of ordering . The next is Paramount Orchids...I found that they are a bit more expensive but that could be because they are on Vancouver Island . They have a fair amount of selection of different varieties as do the other 2. I mention these 3 because I have ordered & received orchids from them & have been satisfied with all. 🙂

Now i live 10 minutes from the Schwerter orchid nursery and i can't really complain. Here and there were some orchids with bad root systems, but i guess that's normal when you have thousands upon thousands of orchids. Norway is poorly developed in orchids - we have 1 orchid nursery (solheim gartneri) with limited stock and no shows. I recently researched the costs of ordering from abroad and the price of CITES and phytosanitary certificates was 200$. I would have ordered for maximum 80$ with all costs included, so my wallet does not allow to import. We also have to get import permits. It makes me so sad.

Only 10-15 euros. I wish we had similar prices here. I guess it is probably cause of our harsh winter and high cost to keep greenhouses hot.
For people in Canada, I can recommend Tropical Garden Orchids (TgOrchids), Clouds Orchids, Paramount Orchids. Roehampton is a new seller, and their price are in the higher end. But they have potential. If you can go to shows, there is a lot more Canadian based sellers and it is always a pleasure to deal with them.
