Fans of G&L often say that they are Leos ultimate creation, Fender fans know what they like and where to get it. I feel like im pretty open minded to offbeat and unique takes on guitars, so how do I compare two guitars with the exact same price point but inspired by two different eras of Leo Fenders career? And most importantly, which one would I buy?

That G&L sounds waaaay better than the Fender.
The G&L Skyhawk, S500 and Comanche are all Strat variants that share the same switching system. With the little expander switch down, it's like a typical Strat 5-position pickup switching configuration. With the expander switch up, then positions 1 & 5 are the neck and bridge pickup together (emulates a Tele in the middle position), positions 2 and 4 are all three pickups together, and position 3 is the middle by itself. The Skyhawk, S500 and Comanche guitars use Leo's "magnetic field design" pickups that have a single bar magnet under adjustable iron pole pieces, which makes them quieter and gives them a little more output. If you want something that sounds more like a regular Fender Strat, then try a G&L Legacy. All of these Strat-style G&L guitars have one knob for volume, one for treble roll-off, and one for bass roll-off, which affect all three pickups.
Exactly. Yet, saying I had the cash, I'd grab all the G&L Strats to go with my pair of Fenders.
I switched to G&L about 8-9 years ago. I’ve owned USA and Tribute basses and guitars. I just prefer them-the sound, the feel, the vibe.
I love my ASAT tribute and am now strongly looking into their option shop, not a full custom for me just yet lol
Just wanna say thanks and hello from our new channel! 🙏
Ive got some new G&L content coming up soon!
@@60CycleHumcast That’s awesome thanks again! 👍😄
All the comments on pickups. Ryan never adjusts the knobs on the guitar. The MFD pickups in the G&L very likely have the strat sounds in them if the volume/tone/bass are adjusted. G&L guitars are not suited for players who leave everything at 10 all the time.
Yes, you get it! The old players - before pedals became ubiquitous - put their volume/tone between 5-7 and adjusted the amp accordingly. That's what I do. When everything is on 10, you've got nowhere to go but down. If you set up your amp with the guitar volume on 7 you don't need a boost pedal. Increasing the volume on the guitar gives you the boost you need.
It's not only the knobs! You could also adjust every single polepiece of every one of the 3 PUs. OK, it's the only singlecoil PU that let's you do this, so it obviously does not come to mind, if not really well prepared on the specs of each guitar...
I'm pretty sure, he would manage to get exactly the sound, he is looking for with a bit more tweaking. But right, if you "only" want to sound like playing a strat, then play a strat!
This is the TRUTH! I have an ASAT Classic and sounds much better played at 7
@@Sturmsaenger Bottom out the pickups and the ice pick Fender sound emerges, raise them and they more like a stacked P-100 with no hum at all. The fit and finish on G&L's rival Fender custom shop at a ⅓ of the price. Overall if you could just afford 1 guitar, the G&L can be set up to sound like a myriad of other axes while the Fender is a 1 ½ trick pony.
G&L tone & vol at 7 is a strat maxed out. Almost identical
My preference is the G & L. That country twang is incredible, plus, everyone has a Fender Stratocaster, but how many have a G & L!!
I have 2 legacies! A deluxe and a standard. Both hss. Such awesome guitars.
That dark rosewood neck is so beautiful. It could feel like sandpaper and I'd still strongly consider it.
Dude, the G&L sounds like a Strat on steroids with even more options when you flick that switch...almost makes it sound like a Gibson-y hum bucker thickness. Best of all worlds?! Would be sweet if they made a hollowbody version as well.
The Fender sounded like a watered down version of the G&L...and then there is the sexy gold/black finish. whew, I need to get one. The only thing that I would mildly miss is the Fender logo an headstock shape which I admit is pretty shallow and superficial of me...but that branding has been burned into my consciousness since I was just a wee boy.
I love them both, but I think that the G&L has a richer and fuller sound.
G&Ls are much superior guitars if you’re a PLAYER rather than a collector, especially the early pre-1991 era g&ls
G&L MFD pickups are magic
When I first heard you play the G&L I was stunned. Didn’t expect that. Thought it’d be cool, was surprised it’s even cooler.
You didn’t know what you had with that G&L. It’s vastly more versatile then that Strat. Plus, know what you’re demoing! Dear Lawd! Google that shit yo!
Wow, lots of comments about resale value as opposed to the sounds. The Strat had that classic Fender sound, and I think the rosewood neck helped tamp down some of those highs. All Fenders should sound that good.
The Skyhawk sounded good too, just different. The passive treble and bass knobs almost gives it that Telecaster quack, while the mini toggle switch gives you the option of selecting neck+ bridge or all three at once (depending on the selector switch setting).
Not surprised that you chose the Strat, it has the tone. But you're also a man seeking his golden guitar, and that Skyhawk ticks a lot of your boxes.
I've never played Skyhawk. But I do prefer the Legacy over most strats
The controls make more sense to me. And the feel of the guitar is more comfortable to play.
I'm a little afraid to try a Skyhawk. I fear my wallet, and marriage, would suffer once I played one.
Prefer G&Ls myself. They just have the Leo vibe - tough to explain. The switching options are pure Leo-genius.
The G&L guitar has MFD pick-ups which I will always prefer over any other single coil pick-up! So I'll go with the G&L over the Fender Strat!
I love anything Leo Fender and George Fullerton put their passion and efforts into. When comparing the two guitars, which both are great, pay tribute to these two men. Thanks 🤙
Leo considered the G & L line of his guitars to be improvements over his Fender line of guitars. I'm more into the G&L lineup than the Fender but either one would be a winner.
Of course he did. If he said/felt otherwise, nobody would ever buy a G&L. Similarly, KISS always touted their current lineup/album as their greatest, which could not be further from the truth. That being said, in this case I agree with the sentiment. The early G&L line were a definite improvement over the same era Fender guitars. Fender had stagnated and even regressed. Currently, Fender has stepped up their game and now it's really just a matter of preference.
@@PaulHikes2 as I said ,I'm more into the G&L line but it has more to do with G&L being sort of a unique brand more anything else, but I really consider both Fender and G&L to be equals in terms of quality and playability. I could go either direction on this really. As for KISS ,each version of the band had their good points and their bad. Musically speaking, KISS has never been above average. Without their stage show ,merchandising, pyrotechnics, and Gene Simmons business sense, they would have just another hard rock band with just a couple of anthems. KISS is one of the greatest bands on earth, don't get me wrong, but it takes ALL of the elements that I mentioned to make them work. They were pretty much just another band in the 1980's.
He was wrong.
@@PaulHikes2 KISS is for kids!
@@allstopblue5717 “G&L guitars and basses are the best instruments I have ever made” - Leo Fender.
I play mostly bass and synth, and I still get excited to see you post and your vids. So homey and comfortable, but still very professional and well done. I guess your personality just shines through.. Thanks man :3
G&L seems more versatile in a way, but dang that strat simply just sounds "sweeter"..
Ohhhh so good...
G&L has ceramic pick ups, Fender, alnico.
@@DMSProduktions thank you sir.. I believe I missed that in the vid if mentioned.
@@tylerevans1700 It wasn't, but many of those G&L models were made with, specially designed ceramic pick ups.
Yup. The fender just flat out sounds better. No way around it in my opinion, I guess if you like the weird awkward looks of the G&L pickguard, head stocks, etc, certainly, go for it. I mean the G&L presented in this video literally looks like a parts caster somebody built on their own. In my personal opinion of course.
I was holding out for that very same G&L Skyhawk, but I saw a 2 yr old Legacy (G&L's Strat) on Reverb with the same Pharaoh Gold finish and I jumped on it. Still love the Skyhawk and hope to get one someday. The Fender sounded good and if you are thinking of ever reselling the Strat makes a little more sense.
If the comparison was between G&L Tribute series and say, a Fender MIM or Squire of similar price, then hands down, I would recommend the G&L.
G and L all day long 👍
Fender for me has become all about selling the brand! Dont get me wrong I've owned 3 American strats and they were all nice guitars, but since I've owned a G and L Fullerton legacy, based on my own experience the G and L is better built guitar and plays beautifully!
Fenders tend to hold there money better than a G and L simply because of the brand and the legendary guitarist who played them ,David gilmour is reason i brought a red strat lol
Reality is if someone was to give anyone of us either one of those guitars we'd be very happy 😊
Agreed. I have owned 3 Strats (USA, MIM and Asian) over the years and ended up selling each one because they eventually revealed themselves to be wanting in one aspect or another. Don't get me wrong they were very nice guitars, but I sat down at GC one time and played a Legacy and even though I didn't buy it right away, the guitar absolutely haunted me. I started looking at the Skyhawk as shown in this video, but ended up buying a Legacy (USA) with the same finish and the PTB tone controls that G&L developed.
Long story short is that now the Legacy and my MIM Telecaster are my two main guitars and cover everything that I could want.
Ryan - I bought two of the same limited edition strats. One for me and one for my son. I couldn't agree more that I love the classic strat tones these things produce. The pickups in the strat are 65's and have that classic strat tone (better than my custom shop 69's). I also called fender and was told they only made 400 of these guitars and are in the limited edition lineup (hence the all rosewood neck). I also own a G&L ASAT classic blues boy deluxe telecaster and have to say it is one of my favorite guitars out of around 35 in my current collection. The G&L is a well built and beautiful guitar. You couldn't go wrong with either but for this comparison, I agree the tone on these strats are awesome!
I just got a CLF Skyhawk today, and my opinion is the opposite. My American Fender Strat is going to sit in the case for a while now, I can't put this Skyhawk down. It looks, plays and SOUNDS better IMO. Different strokes for different folks
I would buy the G&L
It’s gold, not a common looking guit, has that surf vibe- it’s all you, Ryan!
G & L for the win.!
It is a lot more interesting to hear the Comanche, because the sound is different and more variable than other strat types.. The look on your face when you were playing the Comanche made it seem like you were having a lot of fun trying out the different tones.
you chose wrong, G&L would have been my choice...and I own three Fenders by the way which I love...
I own two fantastic Fender Player Strats (2019 SSS and 2021 HSS) and just today received my new G&L Tribute Comanche and I am really thinking that the Comanche can replace both the others. It has all the good classic Strat tones plus much more with the noiseless Z-coil MFD pickups. The MFDs have such a full range that Fender pickups now sound thin and brittle to me. The quality of the G&L is 99.9% as good as the MIMs and it cost a couple hundred $$$ less, I am sold on G&L. As others have said, Ryan should have taken a minute to learn what the switch does; on the Comanche it gives 7 different pickup configurations including all three on at once or both the B and N on with the center off. Not knowing about the pickup positions screwed up his demo of the sounds. Overall, the G&L is much more versatile than the Fender, you can always turn up the bass cut to thin the pickups to sound like the Fender!
Ryan your editing comments are hilarious! “Thank Cod!” Lol so hard
Can't wait to get my G&L
I'm new to guitars. I just found out about these G&L bluesy guitars and I think they are fantastic for the price. I know. We're not reviewing the Bluesboy.
Oh jeeez. The g&l that's a killer
My only thought is if you put the tremelo arm in... Oh my that is the difference. Leo got it gong on with the two point tremelo. I neverr use a trem arm with my stratocasters. My G&L's that is the trem arm to have for non Keohler style trems. I like the G&L pickups better too becaue you cna adjust them for each string individually
I own both Fender and G&L instruments, but if that G&L had a maple board I'd take it for sure.
I don't know how to describe Leo's designs.. I just know I love them and there no one guitar-designer who has made guitars so visually pleasing... "Odd" but satisfying
Ryan, I assume you subsequently used teh Googlez to find out that the switch on the G&L was an on/off for the bridge pup? (For neck/bridge or all on switching.)
Even the lower line G & L's are fabulous.
oh i agree there.
Both are very nice but the Strat sounds more suited for vintage tones so I would pick the Strat.
any dayyyyy
Who did the "Tun'r" drawing ?
By the way, love your content.
Both guitars sound muddy to me. I once owned a Strat and I've owned a G&L S-500 (essentially the same pickup config as the Skyhawk) and neither of them were muddy. If anything, the MFD pickups are very bright compared to alnico.
The switch he refers to changes the switching so that the 1 and 5 positions are neck + bridge, 2 and 4 are all 3 pickups, and position 3 is the middle pickup.
Try the G&L Legacy. Closer to a strat and uses classic single coil pickups as appose to the adjustable pole pickups (I think they're called MFD).
Hey Ryan, what’s the tune at 8:32? Sounds familiar...thanks!
Other than the Skyhawk's reduced body shape, is there any difference between the g&l Skyhawk and g&l S500? I presume they both have the same hardware and pickups, correct?
Depends what sounds you are looking for. The Strat has that classic vintage sound if that’s what you are looking for. But the G&L (I have just bought one :) is like a Swiss army knife of a guitar. Compared to my Eric Johnson Strat it has way more very useable tonal options, so I’m now selling the EJ. It’s been a great guitar, but for my personal quest for tone, the Skyhawk wins. It also has 22 frets and a useable trem system that doesn’t wobble and that had caused me many headaches in the past.
I’m normally a Fender guy but I’d choose the GL. Sounds 👍
I'm catching up, just came across this video.
FWIW most of the difference in pickups folks are hearing is the output volume from the MFDs are about twice the alnico single coils in the fender. I'd rather be able to turn down to that level and have the extra juice if needed.
I went through fender after fender until I bought my G&L--so FWIW I think it's just an alternative for folks looking for something a bit different than what Fender puts out.
I kinda like the g&l a lil more tonally
Enjoyed this demo! My choice would be the Strat even though I would not be a fan of the rosewood neck, I prefer maple necks and maple fretboards for my Strats and Tele's. Have a happy fourth of July!
I like the lower output pick-ups in the Strat. However,,, you can get the Legacy from G&L and get that style of pick-up along with the bigger fret wire. That would be my choice (which I had already made in my personal guitar) I like the feel of the G&L neck more than the neck of the Fender guitars too (not sure about the feel of a solid rosewood neck, but I like the shape of the G&L better for sure!).
A+++ comment. Good point!
I have three strats, all with different pickups but they all have the Fender quack that I love so much. So.....I would go for the Fender over the G& L, but that the G&L is is good if you want the different sounds it can give you.
I am #teamlightfrets all the way! Everything I own has vintage fret wire on it. Almost everything has a 7.25" radius as well.
I have an '85 original Skyhawk sss, it can handle any genre or playing style.
Another nice one Ryan. You know yourself....you can't deny that you want to pick that G&L 😂👍.
I think if the pickups were closer to the sounds i go for i would have picked the G&L
@@60CycleHumcast Come on Ryan! The MFD pick-ups on the G&L has the greatest sounds, plus you can adjust the pole pieces for more clarity.
Fender! And I like the new intro! 👍🏽
You can't go wrong with either choice. If you want the traditional strat sounds, the Pro is the easy choice. If you are in a cover band, the G&L gives you so many more sounds, it wins on versatility. Quality on both, first class.
I really thought you were going to go with the G&L. Definitely a different tone. Both were pretty sweet though ... and WAAAYYYY out of my price range.
So i like that GORGEOUS neck and finish on the Fender, and everything else (except the finish) on the G&L
Also, that Supro amp back there is calling out to you! Its saying: " Play me, Ryan." (In a very calm, smooth, and still voice)
both are amazing
PS If you want to compare apples to apples G&L to Fender Stratocaster get the G&L Legacy Strat body and Alnico V pickups like in the Stray. Better Tremelo, Better Tone controls in that you have a hi and low pass filters instead of the low pass tone control on the Stratocaster. It's not a hard decision for me. When you have one Stratocaster why buy another when youn can have what I consider to be the more advanced product. It wasn't like Leo and George got worse at building guitars. They capitalized on their designs from Fender and improved upon them.
If I was going to buy that G&L it would be two Humbucker pickups on that same gold finish. The fender rosewood neck feels good to me. But I do love my Maple Fretboards.
This is like comparing a Telecaster with a P90 Les Paul. Similarities but different.
Just in case anyone from BBE is reading this I want a G&L Tribute Skyhawk.
1:44 *CLF Research (forgiven, because I'm new here and dig your channel!)
Stands for Clarence Leo Fender!
that strat is absolutely beautiful
Can we put the Strat neck on the G&L?
you could probably imitate the strat with the g&l. the strat will never sound like the g&l. i like the g&l.
I know that this has nothing to do with anything... I really love that you are okay with people leaving you rude and nasty comments. You know what, I think people are less inclined to leave you rude comments if you mention it? But thanks for being a free speech advocate. Peace and love, Ryan. You take good care of yourself.
The g&l
I see why I've never put down any serious money for a strat… I'd have gone for the G&L, just like I did when wanting to fill up my 'trifecta.' I have a couple Epi Les Pauls, a Squier Paranormal Tele (yes, because I wanted a Tele with a comfortable body. That's one thing strats have all over most of my guitars. Worse, it has a P-90 in the neck! *runs from the purist torch and pitchfork mob*), but when it came time for the strat, I went with an S-500 Tribute. I love that guitar: it can put out an absolutely massive tone, but can also quiet down to a delicate whisper. Still I just keep thinking I must be missing something in not having a 'pure' strat in my quiver.
Now I'm beginning to think what I'm missing is that I don't really like strats. :D For example, I'll take the two Kings (BB and Albert) over Buddy every time, and though I love Robert Cray, I've never felt any great urge to try to sound like him. Anyway, I actually ordered an EART, but the high E-string has started catching on the 22nd fret, plus I don't really like how it sounds. I'm either going to attempt to fix it or take an extreme bath selling it. So now I have a Guitar Fetish strat coming, IF the damned thing ever ships. They better hurry, because I saw a… okay, I'm not going to say what, but since I ordered a case and a better set of pickups for the GF strat, it's only $200 more, and it's also not like anything I have.
It seems like the G&L is preferred when different tones are desired. I was going to buy a G&L legacy but at the last minute I got a Fender Deluxe Roadhouse Strat. It has even more tones than the G&L and cost half. MIM but the build is just as good as any US Strat. I had a TV yellow Les Paul special I still regret selling but the Roadhouse can emulate a P90 pretty well!
i like the new intro
The G&L body kinda reminds me of the Peavey T-15 body shape.
The Pickguard was giving me an old Peavey vibe as well. 👍
@@jasontrayal718 now all it needs is those sweet peavey logo metal knobs.
Hardley I would think, that would be a comparison that would be way off base.
The Peavey T-15 couldn't hang with either of these two guitars my friend.
And this is why I bought a Tun'r Fish shirt.
I really like the way you play
The Strats colour is actually Desert Sand , not blonde !
I'm torn... but I think G&L wins this one, at least for me.
G&L sounds better, looks better and it's different. I have all the Fenders but I just got a G&L myself so I'm biased.
I'm curious why you didn't compare it with the G&L "strat" for a more direct comparison?
me too. the Legacy.
Because the skyhawk is a brand new design, it's a comparison of designs
Yup, legacy alnicos
So we have Fender guitar designed by Leo Fender vs a G&L also by Leo Fender... so the winner is Leo? Fender? Leo Fender?
Solid rosewood neck.
G&L imho
The strat is awsome
2 different animals. Fender is a Fender. G&L is a G&L. G&Ls with those CLF pickups are much bolder and just a bit more balls. I have both. I’m keeping both. Use them for different situations.
Surf Strat for the win but both are beautiful guitars! Definite Ginger or Maryann dilemma. Can't go wrong with either. Now is only I had $1700...Love your surf tone.
If I had $1700, I could buy a majority of my guitar collection again, all at once. xD They're all under $200. I like looking at expensive guitars, but I just can't justify buying them... I suck. I can literally barely play. I can't even switch between chords efficiently. (I just started learning a little under 2 years ago, and I don't really practice. I just play around.) In 20 more years, I may finally get something with some value to it, as a treat to myself. Even then, I'd probably only let myself go up to the $600ish range. I can't see ever owning a guitar that costs this much. I'm just not going to be pro quality ever, so I don't need that much. Just overkill for me, but I totally see the draw.
There was never a dilemma between Maryann or Ginger! Maryann was the sweet beautiful girl next door, while Ginger was the bimbo from Hollywood! So Maryann wears the G&L Skyhawk, both of my choices hands down!
I would buy a less-expensive strat.
I would buy an MIJ strat for a thousand less. And then buy a used G&L too.
@@drainbownick Yeah!! Or 2 American G&L's used for 1700 would work too...sometimes even new and that will never happen with american Fenders unfortunatly
G&L
G&L all day long.
I'd have to go Strat.
Kind of apples and oranges comparison really. I love the G&L MFD pickups and, in particular, this Skyhawk’s looks and versatility. Just killer. You probably would better off comparing 1700 worth of G&L Legacy to the Strat for the PuPs tone you like. That said, so far as a Strat goes, love that Mahogany look there and the tried and true sounds
Wow that Fender
I would buy 4 different Squiers....
Ps: Strat sounded better right away to me....I actually don't like that pickguard though...if the G&l was $700 maybe... fender will hold more value too I think...
Should have tried the G&L Comanche...it's better than either of these.
That Strat needs that G&l's head stock. That G&L sounds like my Squire. The Strat kills it though in my head anyway. Awesome vid dude.
Imagine that Strat with a black body and chrome furniture and pickguard.
skyhawk
CITES: Hey guys rosewood is kinda close to being endangered, maybe don't use it as much?
Fender:... fuck you
