Chappers, thank you so much for telling the story of Dale! I as well feel like his rightful position in the history of the guitar was in jeopardy of being forgotten and he should be celebrated. At the vintage shop I work at, my boss was friends with Dale and when he passed he bought all of his estate stuff so we have all of his papers, designs, even his book of dealers from Fender and G&L and I love to get it out and show people the inner workings of the best guitar companies in the world!
Josh Bohm you are welcome dude, yes I thought it was important to discuss the history of the personalities that came together to make something so great :-)
I'm loving that "roomy" sound you guys have got in this video. It sounds true to whats coming out of that amp in that room and is not purely a studio sound.
Thats because they r mixing the ambient mic that is capturing the sound in the room and the miced cabinets..That way you have a scene of being there in room on how actually it sounds..they should use this technique with all the Andertons videos, cause frankly they are not my cup of tea tone audio engineering..
I own both a Indonesia G&L and Mexican Fender between the two the G&L is so much smoother to play. The fretboard radius on the G&L is a little flatter than a standard fender neck so you really bend hard and play fast. Also the stock pickups in the G&L are great, G&L is so underrated they make great guitars.
That's the word "underrated" G&L are the evolution of Fender, G&L is where Leo worked by own creativity unleashed make incredible things, without rules or guidelines by his former company (where practicaly was kicked out) he was a genius and he find the way: make his own company
I hung out with Dale Hyatt.... when I was a just-post-teen-guitar-teacher teaching teens. Dale taught me...he taught me why G&L was the best guitar company of the late 80s( beginning of the 90s...) Everything that they had learned was all being put to use, and they were building for quality over style. Mr. Fender was in his office (!!!) but Dale told me he could not come out and meet me and my student that day. We geeked out that we *almost met Leo Fender!! Dale was generous with his time and happy to hang out with young people who seemed to "get it" and wanted to learn more. If you want to really compare the LEO design, you want to use an S-500 over a "Legacy" which was created years after Leo passed. The latest you want to go with a Fender strat to retain Leo's "latest" ideas for Fender would be about 75 when he was still a consultant whose ideas were still being built into the new instruments. So... compare a 1975 Stratocaster to a 1992 S-500 and you can actually answer "which one is better?" - I toured with a G&L L-2000 bass and a G&L SC-2 guitar in the 90s... and they both loved the road, never messed up... and despite having to use batteries, the bass sounded great in every size room with various bass cabinet set ups... the guitar cut through like a smoothed out Tele, especially clear and bright when set to "both." Two of my clients used S-500s and I was jealous of one of them because I had sold my American Strat and was playing a Japanese with after market pickups. His sounded more "Stratty" than mine. G&L guitars are worrisome to Fender. They know that they are on their tail, biting their heels and don't like it. Too bad, Fender. :) (*P.S. Leo Fender could not come out of his office that day because he was shaking really badly from the palsy associated with Parkinson's and some strokes... he was thinking and creating but... it's no fun to meet kids when you are all shaky... I get it. )
EpictheEpicest I wouldn't necessarily say that. In 1957 a brand new strat cost $247.50 if you account for inflation that's equivalent to over $2000 today
that was more because it was easy to repair and increased their profit margins. same with using woods like ash or maple, it helped increase their profit margins since it was pretty cheap wood.
My favorite thing about my G&Ls is the cost to performance ratio. I think I payed $1200 (in 2013) for my Legacy Special USA, and the quality is absurdly good. It's a one-piece body with a see-through orange finish and beautiful wood grain underneath. You can tell when you hold the instrument that somebody payed serious attention to it while putting it together.
@@ronenbeniaminov6162 It's not a one piece body. I have a CS Legacy and a regular USA ASAT. They are two piece, but in both cases the pieces are grain matched so well, you almost can't tell, and my Legacy is an open pore, brushed body.
Seriously underrated company, and they have a great guitarist in their stable (jerry Cantrell). Whenever I've had the chance to try one I've never been disappointed. Great video and it was rad to see them get some spotlight!
G&L is grossly underrated. FCS quality at production-line prices. Some say... the original 80's product lineup with 3-bolt neck-join created skepticism due to Fender's failure with the 3-bolt in the '70's. Even though those early G&L guitars are rock-solid to this day, the company eventually switched to 4-bolt to quiet the skeptics and hopefully boost sales. This early stumble may be why they're not more popular today. Just pick one up and you'll know why they're hidden gems.
The job of the head stock and the bridge are to keep the guitar intonated and in tune - both of which the G&L do exceptionally well. You can actually use the whammy bar on the g&l without having to retune the guitar after every bend - which is more than I can say for most of the competition.
Sure - different strokes. I remember seeing ads in the 80's and not liking the headstock or bridge either. I think they've fine tuned the headstock and decal over the years and they're pretty slick now - especially if you want something DIFFERENT than Fender. The bridge is a two-point fulcrum that sounds and works great - I like the thicker bar with set-screw for setting tension. They could do with a little more aesthetic tweaking, but man...pick one up and they're stunning.
I think the deal-maker for me is this: you pay for the guitar and features, hence the quality. With similar-priced Fender, you're paying for the brand (yes you are) and a decent guitar that likely needs some upgrades. As a kid, I was all about the brand/logo, but I'm wiser now ;)
Leo Fender.... An American with Greek heritage... Was the king of the most legendary guitars and amplifiers. Still to this day, he has not been serpassed.
I love that you guys have a partnership with a shop in minnesota! I love driving down to visit this shop! Also I am a huge fan of the g&l line up not to discount fender, but I would buy a g&l tele if I had to make the choice again as I have a fender tele now.
I have owned four or five G&Ls over the years, and play a G&L ASAT Special in my main rig. They make a great solid guitar. The MFD pickups are tricky, however, as their character is much different than other pickups. Pretty glassy depending on your tone settings.
B Thomas the triangle is a great instrument! You can get all sorts of rhythms and textures out of it, its defiantly on my list of instruments to get down! ;-)
I love G&L guitars!! I have four G&L's and only one Fender. Actually, the only reason I have the Fender is because I purchased one of the Hendrix limited editions. I just like the feel of the G&Ls better. My Legacy is my main guitar, and then I also have a Rampage, a Superhawk and a Ascari GTS. Great guitars!!!!!
Me too, i have an ASAT special carved top and sounds amazing, better than a Fender MIM (IMHO) G&L are well constructed and a half of the price jejejeje
This was great! A little rough around the edges, but if you look at the real early Chappers and the Captain stuff, they were still exploring how they wanted to approach the format a bit more themselves. I think this is going to be a kickass series, Rob!
Ian Ross thanks dude and, yes this is absolutely rough around the edges - lots of improvements to be had including the lapel mics in the future, new cameras etc
If you guys are kind of taking the setup of chappers and the captain you might as well copy/take all like that background seems big and too far from you guys at times it looks like if you were using the greenscren with a prerecorded background. But its cool nice themes. Keep going guys
In almost 26 minutes, G&L's PTB tone circuit (e.g. the bottom tone knob is a bass-cut knob, which G&L had before Reverend) was not mentioned-not even when prompted at 21:27.
I love my G&L Asat...feels sturdier than any Fender I've tried and they nailed the neck profil for me. But...my romantic side would like a Fender headstock sometime!
Mr Rob you've done it again! First Captain now Uncle Riff! Lord of name branding! Also Mr Rob would like to hear your opinion and you give a demo of the G&L Comanche.
Cracking vid lads. Kudos to Dave for the bass amp geetar mastery. One can only feel for Bea and Ben as they sit back in Blighty, jealous of your budding U.S. Bromance!! ,!
My parents got me a G&L for highschool graduation. Great guitar. Instead of two tone nobs it has a bass and a treble nob. Useful for getting great tones.
I own a G& L USA custom shop and it's beautiful . The build quality is second to none. The price compared to fender is great value I would highly recommend the G&L to anyone including die hard fender fans.
I have a G&L legacy and boy let me tell you… it’s an amazing guitar sounds great the neck feels great it also stays in tune very well. I can get a shit load of sounds on it. From hard rock with a lot of overdrive to a super clean blues tone. Overall I highly suggest it if your budget isn’t high enough for a fender
I think with the traditional 6 screw trem, the bridge basically pivots on the screws themselves, which go directly into the guitar body. This can cause wear on the wood and screws, and does provided a hugely stable platform for the trem, as the screws are holding the bridge on, but also trying to provide movement for the system. The 2 point system uses a knife edge and proper screw in ferrules to get around this, and provide better tuning stability etc. Fender design looks better btw, but maybe thats what I'm used to!
Chapman Ml3 pro traditional vs. Fender Telecaster! I would love to see that. Also, I just bought the ml3 myself from Uncle Riff, absolutely amazing piece of axe, cheers, Rob!
Cool you are covering G&L. I was looking for a affordable classic S-Style guitar for a long time ... A ton of Squier CV's, Mexico Fenders I played at small and big stores just weren't the thing. And the first G&L Legacy Tribute I played at a local guitar store was so different, I instantly bought it. I think it are especially the pickups. The G&L sound a lot meatier and feels great to play. TRY THEM!
I had the same experience as you. Was looking to upgrade to a Fender Telecaster in the $1000 range after being fed up with Squiers and subpar Player Series. I tried a used G&L Tribute Legacy at my local GC and knew I couldn’t put it down. A $400 guitar that feels better, looks better, and crafted better than many of the Fenders I had tried. Can’t go wrong with G&L.
just ordered your ghost fret pro dusk from riff city in minesota. im in houston in a hurricane nonstop raining situation so it may take a while to get here to pasadena, texas. i hope it plays and sounds as good as it does in your hands as it does when its in my hands. im sure it will. i really like the look and sound of your guitars. cheers brutha
Been waiting for this video from you guys! I love my Legacy and s500. Theyre incredible guitars and you have even more tonal options than a fender with the split and the passive bass system.
3 G&L guitars just arrived at the local pawn shop, all used to belong to the one player, who is known to me. He knows his guitars. I might check them out, quite reasonably priced and in good shape.
interesting that we're taking the Anderton's shoot out video style and applying it to US... Would be interested to see how this translates as much of the success of the original was based on the chemistry between Rob and Lee.
Nice guitar, but the headstock kinda weird. Not motivating. If they wanted to come up w smth different than Fender, the Prince Telecaster (from Hohner or whatsoever) is similar to G&L but a bit more organic and looks better.
Y'all failed to point out that the Legacy has the Passive Treble Bass system instead of traditional tone controls which is one of the main selling points of the G&L IMO
I have a 96 Legacy (USA model) and a 2004 50th Anniversary American Standard Strat. Both are the Ash body. Build quality is pretty close, with the Fender slightly edging out the G&L. The G&L have the “swimming pool” pickup pocket routing, vs the individual routing of the Fender. I prefer the Fender routing myself, it ads solidity for the pick guard. The G&L also has a lot of static noise when you rub your little finger on the pick guard while playing. As for the sound, they are completely different. The G&L is slightly louder, and a bit brighter than the Fender. The pickups in the Fender (special for that year only) are just a bit quieter, with a great tone. As for one being “better sounding” than the other comes down to personal preferences. I love the sound of both, but I find myself playing the Fender much more. It just feels better, and plays smoother that the G&L. But, the G&L does have its place. If I had to only play one, it would be the Stratocaster.
Rob... I'm a Fender guy! I own 4 of them. Love the playability of a Strat, just wish they would offer more finishes (kinda like the G&L). You guys sound awesome!
Just got a G&L Legacy USA. I also have a Jimmy Vaughan Fender Strat. Two different monsters, but this G&L is super quality. It's lighter than my JV, but "feels" more substantial, like a Gibson. She's a winner for sure.
I used to have a G&L Tribute S-500 made in Japan, the one in my avatar. Sold it once, regret the rest of my life. It was one of the best guitars I have ever own. The current Tribute are made in Indonesia, and I prefer the Japanese for the slimmer, wider neck. Well the Indonesian ones are closer to the US, feel-wise, IMHO. There are Japanese-made G&L manufactured as of today, but they are not available outside Japan. Haven't had a chance to try those though.
Rob did you call the series Salutations America or not? Just not sure from the video. Also your jams were bloody brilliant in this video and yourself and Dave have a surprisingly nice blues touch!
The very place! Saw him filming the video too. One thing that a lot of us really don't like is the name of the song though as there is another song called Galway Girl written by and American artist called Mundy which every Irish person knows off by heart!
I bought a G&L after playing it in a store used. It needed a setup, but I like a challenge, and this one was indeed a challenge. I didn't care for the neck profile, and just couldn't get used to it. The bridge caused me problems, but I'm not a floating bridge fan. I steamed the neck for a week to get it straight, and then it was out the door bye bye. It was stunningly beautiful, but I couldn't just bond with as bad as I wanted to. The rubber washers seemed to a problem, maybe needed replaced or something. I also had an ASAT Classic I kept it for a few months but no love lost there either.
Gutard, I took on a difficult project to save the the instrument. The neck came back beautifully. It played well within specs but nothing memorable. It sounded like expected, I just didn't like the bridge. I owned an ASAT Classic, and sold it, preferring my CV tele with CS Nocaster w/4way. I have a CV 50 Strat that I will probably never sell. I owned a Stingray for a while, but a collector talked me out of it. I wasn't criticizing G&Ls, just pointing out they are like any other brand, and have their problems.
Gutard, the replay in Marilu M was from me, not her, she had borrowed my laptop, and I didn't know she had changed user. I accessed youtube thru my email, but she had switched users.
In 1986, I️ played over70 Fender Strats before I️ accidentally came across a 1984 Master Series Esprit w/two humbuckers and a locking tremolo that had hung in that music store for 2 years before I️ came across it. Years later I️ finally bought a Strat but it only ever has been a back up guitar. Then last year, after playing only one G&L S-500, I️ finally found a Stratesque guitar that I️ could make my primary axe. I️ gave my Esprit to my oldest son because I️ had promised it to him two decades ago and because I️ finally felt like I️ had found my new love with that S-500. My Strat still is, at best, one of my back up guitars, right there with my Jackson Soloist.
My philosophy when choosing between two guitars has always been: When in doubt, get both.
Fixed: Get the G&L
funny, my ex-wife always said the same thing...or something like that
I did that exactly
G&L- Glorious and Legendary

In my opinion this is the BEST tone chapters has ever had in a video, absolutely superb sir
George Williams Thanks dude, all the audio is sorted out by Dave :-)
Rob Chapman The tonal wizard himself, mr riff made a good choice in you two 😉
Agreed, that RD-1 is sounding very sexy this video
i totally agree. its like a phoenix

Was thinking the exact same. Some of the guitar tones you hear on youtube are very artificial. I actually am digging that bass amp sound
I got a G&L asat deluxe. It's great for everything from Blues/Rock to Death Metal. Fantastic!

(Knock Knock) open up, it's me, dave.DAVE! DAVE?yea man, it's me Dave..open up.DAVE's NOT HERE MAN.
DO YOU WANT TO BUY SOME PEGS
Dave ! Love the Darkglass stuff . ....and yes I,too, play guitar and bass and my guitars sound great thru my bass amps .
Actually what was that pedal Dave started to play from around 15:37 to 16:00???
I don't like what Fender have done with that truss rod adjuster. That looks ugly as hell.
Chapman Ml3 pro traditional vs. Fender Telecaster! I would love to see that. Also, I just bought the ml3 myself from Uncle Riff, absolutely amazing piece of axe, cheers, Rob!
So glad your in Minnesota! Thats where I live
It was a treat seeing you both at the Grand Opening. Iconic guitars, but I enjoy my ML1 lefty far too much.
Leo Fender claimed the G&L guitars were the best he had ever designed.
I bet he said that when he was the co owner of G&L.
Silviu Stefan correct but that doesnt mena its untrue. If he didnt think they were better he would just make exact fender copies
@@segatortoise5455 it was illegal to make a strat copy. Bridge, headstock etc. But he did copied everything he could thou.
daily vids and he also changed everything that he felt needed improving on the strat
he was wrong.
you forgot to mention the single tone control(fender) vs the treble and bass rolloff. (G&L)
yeah - that is a massive point that was omitted
mike blue, and their best feature to me, hands down.
Indeed. I have a Legacy and love, love, love the treble/bass controls, particularly with higher gain. It *very* swiftly became my #1 guitar.
I have to keep reminding myself to stop diming both controls like I do on my Strat.
Strats have 2 tone controls .
Love the intro!!:)
Both of these sound fantastic.
Loving the baked bean sparkle 😄
Tasty playing Dave.
Nice guitars! Nice playing too.
I'd love to see you do a G&L Legacy vs S-500 vs Comanche video.
Do they wait for the shop to shut so they can record? Nice video, liking the new stuff.
hahah your Maltese needs some improving Rob! Glad to hear you reference my tiny island though!
Good one!! Thank you!
That orange reverend looks quite the treat back there on the wall
18:07 tasty as heck Rob
Nice guitar, but the headstock kinda weird. Not motivating. If they wanted to come up w smth different than Fender, the Prince Telecaster (from Hohner or whatsoever) is similar to G&L but a bit more organic and looks better.
I used to own a white 'Legacy' G&L (Strat) and it was the most 'Stratty' sound I have come across, damn I miss that guitar
I love the finish on the orange one
Aren't the G&L a little flatter fretboard as where the Fender has the 9.5 compound radius?
Great video! Would love to see Rob take an S-500 for a spin, really love the sound of the MFDs and keen to hear his thoughts on it.
I like that that Chappers looking to camera while Dave talks some recording wizardry
Rob did you call the series Salutations America or not? Just not sure from the video. Also your jams were bloody brilliant in this video and yourself and Dave have a surprisingly nice blues touch!
Marcus Hogan Thanks man! Yep I settled on "Salutations America" :-)
Nice! As always greeting from Galway, Ireland
Rob Chapman Greetings and salutations!
I like your tone like a freeze dried corn GMO taco with lettuce.
Love the G&L. Enhanced Fenders kind of took off where Fender left off. great basses also L2000 Is incredible
My G&L legacy is by far the best strategy I've ever owned
G&L guitars are definitely well made and a great value for the money.
Um... the G&L bridge looks wayyy better. Nice video, chaps!
1:39 I was like "Oh no wheres Rob going with this". lol Good thing he was talking about Rickenbacker XD
Rob next time you're @ Winter NAMM request a tour. G&L is only 2KM's from the convention centre on Fender Avenue in Fullerton
he should do this.
Please, please review the Reverend Bayonet RAHC that's hanging on the wall there - there's not a single video of it out there
the fender two point is cleaner looking. The GnL looks as though an experiment that proved true! Both work unbelievably well when set up properly.
PLEASE DO MORE BLUES. I dont feel the metal playing you usual use but your blues really talks to me
In 1986, I️ played over70 Fender Strats before I️ accidentally came across a 1984 Master Series Esprit w/two humbuckers and a locking tremolo that had hung in that music store for 2 years before I️ came across it.
