How this lovely slickrock town has changed since then, my last trip being in 2012. It's lost all of its character in the name of commercialism. Too many greedy buggers trying to bleed the place dry of real lovers of this town/area.
This spring break season ruined Buckskin Gulch. New graffiti on a daily basis. That area took a beating over the last month. Graffiti on petroglyphs too. Infuriating!!!

There is no educating anyone stupid enough to do something like that. There is no way in hell anyone with a brain cell didn’t know this was 100% wrong.
"hopes to fix his mistake" I do not see how he can , the damage is done. but I think we would all like to see who it was and hear what inspired him to do that, why he felt it was ok, so that maybe it can be prevented in the future, could have been just straight ignorance but I find that hard to imagine a climber wouldn't know better. also some extensive community service would be in order, put him to work in some form that will help protect these sites for the future. the fact that he came forward gives him some redemption in my mind but we need to work harder to find ways to prevent these things. it is not fair to future generations to lose these sites and it is so disrespectful to the people who that culture belongs to. Really needs to be protected.
I think it's just common sense to not destroy the history of that rock, but people are entitle these days so it doesn't surprise me that they thought it was their right to climb on history instead of respecting it.
It amazes me that it’s illegal to touch this art but completely ok to displace indigenous people off their land and claim their sacred lands for profit.
A less historically damaging story, but there was a local route that was my white whale ... super hard, but super cool. I kept working at it and got closer to getting past the crux each time. I showed up one day and someone had chiseled open the one finger-hold at the crux so they could fit their whole hand into it. It's super-easy now, and nobody climbs it because there's no point. The destructive entitlement of some people blows my mind. I really wish I could find that person.
History always matters. America boasts about it constantly to back any argument they have. How proud they are to be American and how great their history is. Might as well let people climb all over Mount Rushmore National Memorial and let them carve their names and dates into the cliffs. I'm sure over time it will do just fine.
It blows my mind that someone experienced enough to bolt a route wouldn't know better.

It beggars belief that a climber would be so selfish to do this !!. I'm an oldtimer Englishman from Shropshire who has spent may hours in and around Moab over many years. The first time in 1984. How this lovely slickrock town has changed since then, my last trip being in 2012. It's lost all of its character in the name of commercialism. Too many greedy buggers trying to bleed the place dry of real lovers of this town/area.
Crap! Now so called cancel culture is erasing our physical history! Maybe this person does think about the impact on something this fragile..
Ironic that they are concerned about a 1000 year old Petroglyph yet say nothing when rock is blasted out of the way to make room ''civilization''.
Another casualty of the destructive thing we call social media. 🤦
This spring break season ruined Buckskin Gulch. New graffiti on a daily basis. That area took a beating over the last month. Graffiti on petroglyphs too. Infuriating!!!
Now finally that’s a good reason to remove bolts from a route.
Tired of hearing these blobs of raging ego being like « I’m chopping off those bolts because my cams will hold »
This is a matter of preserving unique ancient history and probably the only time I will agree with destroying someone else’s hard bolting work - because it was preventing the destruction of unique and precious hard work.
A culture of apathy produces..... apathy.
Takes a pretty big person to come forward and accept responsibility....at least there's that!
The climbers interviewed should be responsible for the damage as well!
The entitlement is mind-boggling! Destroying something that belongs to everyone and is irreplaceable. There should be long prison terms for this kind of historical debasement.
Sign Says "Masks Required" What The 😳
In Moab we care about our visitors, too bad some have no respect for others. I’m double vexed but I will continue to mask up until scientists tell us the pandemic is under control.
@@tedecker3792 you dont need a scientist to show you that deaths are averaging 1 or less per day, just go read it and use common sense bro
Hal Johnson Utah had 8 deaths yesterday.
Person 1 (speaking slowly): "...to a one thousand year old petroglyph site in Moab"
Person 2 (Immediately interrupting, speaking as loudly as possible) "FOX13SEPnCerJostsSPOKEWitThTheClimBERWhoDISCOVeredThePROBleM"
There have been some absolutely magnificent natural Rocks, Fossils and examples of Rock Art which are now Lost Forever because of the actions of a few Totally Selfish individuals. Some people have even videotaped themselves doing it and uploaded it to social media sites, just for their 15 Seconds of Fame.
There is no educating anyone stupid enough to do something like that.
There is no way in hell anyone with a brain cell didn’t know this was 100% wrong.
It isn't cynicism that makes people behave this way. It's privilege.
Sad to see someone with no respect for this ancient art.
The more of our history that is erased. The less we know about ourselves.
I'm surprised the vandal came forward.
Gotta give him props for that.👍🏻
naw, he probably thought someone had filmed him
I think it's just common sense to not destroy the history of that rock, but people are entitle these days so it doesn't surprise me that they thought it was their right to climb on history instead of respecting it.
The stupidity of people never ceases to amaze.
Climbing routes are planned out. You have to be a real DF to not know that the route was was on a petroglyph.
At least he was man enough to come forward in the end
she probably got caught by her instagram photos first.
Glad to see the person who did this owned up.
This is like when Greenpeace damaged the Nazca Lines in Peru doing a dumb publicity stunt.
Climbers need to police this shit up....disgusting.
It has nothing to do with education, it's about the selfish attitudes of people today! They don't see the history just a place they want to climb
Have they no respect for history?
This is disgusting 🤮
Heartbreaking. But I'm glad the perpetrator came forward and admitted what he had done. This should be educational for all of us climbers.
I hope you find them too! That's so shitty! Not everything in life needs training wheels, mfw.
What would you do to them when you find them? Chisel their hand into a one- finger width?
With everything else that's happening in the good ol US of A I'll rate this a 1/10 on the give a fuck meter.
History always matters. America boasts about it constantly to back any argument they have. How proud they are to be American and how great their history is. Might as well let people climb all over Mount Rushmore National Memorial and let them carve their names and dates into the cliffs. I'm sure over time it will do just fine.
Education and respect for thousands of years old history. It's like writing on the back of the constitution.
Good job! Glad you took those bolts out!
And this is why more and more outdoor enthusiast are NOT posting anymore newer locations on social media.
These SHOULD be No Climb Zones. PERIOD. 🇬🇧
Does this mean some stick figure I make make in a random rock will be guarded in a thousand years?
