First rode Moab in 87, when I lived in St. George. Moved to DC on 89 then to Moab in 99, managing to do a Moab trip just about every year. From 87 to 2023 is a lot of years. I’m 75yo now, and ride every day. Practice loop this morning in the fog 1/7/23.

So epic.....as a Vancouver MTB rider starting summer of 1986....talking about road trips to Moab forever but not getting there till 2017 and again in 2022...this film just hits all the right notes! Thank you.

So awesome! I started mountain biking in Moab in 1989.
Regarding the Moab Dump: After a day's riding we would go shooting at the dump. They would let us in if no one else was around. Grab some trash, cans, bottles and blast away! Haha!
I was on Slick Rock last year and that's all changed around now.
Cheers to you and your dad.

Great Video! My first time riding Slick Rock was 1989 on my 89 Team Stumpjumper. There was several of us at the time. One friend of mine even rode it on his Huffy. No suspension, Bar ends were in and zero suspension. The last time I rode it was two months ago on my Trek EBike. After all I'm 68 now and that was 34 years ago when Mtb was beginning for me. It was awesome then, and it still is. After watching this I had to dig up the hundreds of pictures of our Moab trips over the years. Yes I do remember the Moab Dump. It was a beautiful site.

You beat me by a year or two probably. A friend who joined us on one of our early trips did all the rides with us on our rigid bikes. I just reconnected with him and he was telling me about the full squish Santa Cruz he got recently. He said he didn't really deserve such a nice bike, as cycling isn't his true love or main sport. I said, "No way! Anyone who's ridden Moab rigid for a week has EARNED the best full suspension bike the market can provide!"

Pretty cool! I was mountain biking Slickrock and Moab area in 1992. I should go back and recreate some of my photos. And yes, I can still mountain bike. I never stopped cycling and I still use my original Giant mt bike I bought late 80s. It was $700 then, and it still rides better than the 1200-2000 range bikes now (I tested a bunch at the local cycle shop past October to see if should upgrade-even the owner said I wouldn’t get anything comparable to my bike unless I spent a lot more. Got a road bike instead just to have something different for riding roads).
Keep up the biking and exploring. Sixty 60 year old you will thank 20-30s year old you.

Such a timeline coincidence. Until my pre-retirement acquisition of a new MTB in 2022, I last did serious MTB riding back in 1992, but sorta gave it up when I moved away from the great trails of Marquette, MI. Now that I'll have more time available, it'll be "game on" once again. BTW - the MTB technology has changed a bit since the good old days! 😄

At 44, I feel blessed to have ridden mountain bikes throughout the ages. I’ve worked in the industry and have ridddn all sorts of bikes. I’ll tell ya one thing, most people don’t need the Uber expensive bicycle. I loved selling high end bikes to weight conscious guys over 250 (I’m a Clydesdale myself), but there’s a lot of great bikes at lower price points, but we are a consumer driven society.

While I haven't gone there myself, there's a place called "Coffee Pot Rock Area" on the Porcupine Rim Jeep Trail (which also connects to the Porcupine Rim Bike Trail) and it seems to match the perspective well at coords : 38.607163243981084, -109.39471716089376

Yup. New name, same thing. Fanny Packs were how you didn't die of dehydration in Moab back then. Camelbacks didn't exist yet. If you were in the know, MountainSmith was THE pack to wear. Two bottles on your bike, and two in your FANNY pack. I hated them - all that weight on your waist, leveraging at your abdomen. Can't believe they're making a come-back. Dumb.

I was born and raised in Moab, but now live in Northwest Oregon. I return back often as I still have a lot of family there, but even so, this was a fun watch! Around 1993, I would have been about 11, and only a few years after that I used to ride my little BMX bike up the hill past the old dump and ride on the slick rock trail. Single speed, no problem! Also, I think that last shot of your dad and his buddy with Castle Rock in the background was most likely taken from the high point of Porcupine Rim. On your next visit, you must take some time to ride that trail. Definitely one of my faves. Judging by the trees in the background in one of those van rear hatch shots, I wonder if your dad camped up in the La Sal Mountains and then rode down the Whole enchilada? I'm not sure how old that trail is though. Did it exist in 93? I'm not sure. I first road the bottom half (Porcupine Rim) in 1999 on a hardtail GT Aggressor. Bumpy ride.
