    So... Iv now got a 5.7 Whittley voyager in my backyard that I bought dirt cheep’ yep it has a range of issues from soft spots in the floor to a 250 mercruiser that’s seized solid.
    I’ll direct the wife to your comments section 👍
    The build so far is very inspiring and can’t wait to sweat my guts out under a itchy mask once again.

    • @Micington
      @Micington  8 місяців тому +1

      Im happy to hear my videos inspire and not scare you! You might have potentially rotted stringers?? Start stocking up on melamine lol 😂
      You’re lucky to have a wife that supports you with that!
      Get a versaflo battery air fed mask like mine if you don’t have one… they come up 2nd hand not working pretty cheap. I got a video on how to fix them and make them run on your tool batteries too if you need…
      I get sweaty and itchy for that feeling once it’s in the water!💧 I have the impression you know that feeling already. Don’t go coosa floor if that’s what u were thinking… I should’ve made my floor outta high density foam of honey comb…. Coosa is too $$$ and heavy in my opinion. But a heavy boat gives a comfy ride…

      I’m sure you could work with Fibreglass well if you really wanted to.. but I appreciate the kind words. I’m very happy to hear you like watching it helps drive me to do them which makes more progress to the boat too. I got overly cocky early on and now im paying for it haha but it makes it more entertaining and I’ve learnt so much. If only I could do it full time!!!! Cheers 🍻

    • @Micington
      @Micington  8 місяців тому +2

      Do same method to the inside of your transom! It’ll save you heaps of time. Less waste of materials/resin/glass… gelcoat, glass, glue thermilite to flat sheet out of boat easily on a work bench 1st. you would have to put a braced flat sheet outside of transom (held there in place with a few small screws)
      Then epoxy glue the inside of transom at the same time you’re epoxy glueing the already completed coosa ,glass ,gelcoat sheet (which u clean up with grinder first)
      Squash together with big battery screws thru the braced wood , thru the hull into flat sheet, thru its braces.
      Sticky tape around edges after u clean so epoxy doesn’t fall out as much.
      Crack it off the next day.
      Clean up with grinder.
      You got the helpers and the tools!
      Just need flat shiny flat melamine etc…
      I promise you it’ll be easier than you think.
      Can’t wait to see how you do it! 😉

    • @Micington
      @Micington  8 місяців тому +2

      Important to flat sheet brace outside transom so u don’t get indents.

    Just come across your video and channel. Great idea you look a little happy that it worked 😂
    Are you a shipwright? Im about to tackle a new transom on an old Savage but wouldn't even know where to start ir what fibreglass i need and in what order.

      @Micington  8 місяців тому +1

      Old Boat Project - Savage Commander
      ua-cam.com/video/55244plo3uw/v-deo.html

    • @Micington
      @Micington  8 місяців тому +2

      Click on my video I just showed you. Is it that type of savage? That video was of the first boat I ever owned and did up. If I get a chance I’ll do a series of short videos of how you could do it.
      In best words I can say.
      First question to ask - (Have you got outboard motor for it lined up yet? now is the time to figure out what motor your putting on it with with size leg because now is the time it is easiest to raise the transom to appropriate height!!! You’re better off going 25mm or 1inch lower then you need) measure from cav plate (nearest to propeller) to outboard motor highest point that wraps around top of transom. Check you can get at least 4 bolts on transom. 2 above, 2 under motor well.
      - it’s always best to cut rotted transom out from inside the boat. But if the transom is the same as the one in the video I sent you it’s too much of a pain. So you’ll have to cut from the outside thru the glass and thru the rotted wood and then probably thru the inside skin of the boat layer of glass so it’ll be completely see thru into the boat from the back of the boat.
      You’ll want some 18mm thick melamine. Polyester resin (approx 10-15L probably cheap enough to get 20L to be safe) with the hardener, GEL coat (5L) with hardener, some good marine ply to get you to original or close thickness of what you pull out (you can glue thin layers up after you ruffle up with grinder with epoxy glue mix) , epoxy resin, 10L Aerosil (dust to mix into the epoxy to make into thick putty glue), Fibreglass chop strand matt 450gram, 75mmx30mm non structural cheap pine wood lengths, putty knives, long cheap steel wood screws, long cheap battery screws, tech gun with Philips head and battery screw bits, drill with long drill bits, grinder with flapper discs, 1mm cutting discs, 3x cheap paint roller frames with a 12 pack of cheap rollers, 1L mixing buckets x4, acetone 10L, drill with paint mixing fan. jigsaw, saber sword with long blade, 2 tables/ work bench, scissors, Stanley knife, scales that go up to 2kg, dust mask of some kind. Disposable gloves, grouting trowel, hammer, chisel, crow bar, cloth tape.
      Cut 2 of melamine sheets to the exact shape of the back of your transom before you start cutting (make a paper stencil). Allow for engine height. Don’t stress if it’s not completely symmetrical. But make sure where top of motor mount will be is perfectly parallel with any flat edge you can eye it up with in motor well.
      Check it’s a good fit.
      Cut transom apart. Use grinder with 1mm cut disc in delicate areas, saber saw where it can be deep and you can be ruff. Avoid going thru inside motor well layer of glass as this will be easier if it stays. Also only cut 40mm (1-1/4”) from bottom of boat.
      You should be able to see thru boat from back after this step. Motor well inside skin should be intact. 40mm of Outside skin should be left from bottom of old transom.
      Cut your marine ply sheets to melamine sheets size using a melamine sheet as a stencil.
      Cut fiberglass cloth to transom melamine 8x all up. 4 per side.
      Once you’re happy you have correct thickness of ply (allow for 4mm of glass and gel coat either side(doesn’t matter if it’s a little thicker)) so it should be approx 8mm thinner then old transom you pulled out.
      Dummy fit everything together. Cut non structural cheap pine to appropriate lengths both sheets of melamine opposing sides so melamine sandwiches together how it should. Use short screws to tack pine on in place. Drive extra long battern screws thru reinforced pine areas only. You don’t want indents. Once all are in at even spaces in screw everything. Lay to melamine sheets down correct orientation with pine facing down on tables.
      You’re ready to paint your 1st gelcoat layer onto your two melamine sheets. Make sure you paint opposing sides of cut out melamine sheets so if you sandwich them together the gelcoat would be touching each other. Probably take about 1L of gelcoat per sheet of melamine. Only mix 500ml and if it’s warm where you live only put 5ml of catalyst (hardner) in. (Which is a 1% mix) if it’s cold you can put 2.5% approx 12ml of catalyst. It’s always better putting slightly more catalyst imo because you want it to cure!! Mix with drill and paint fan. Use roller to apply. Don’t stress much about the fluff coming off. Get the bad chucks off.
      Throw the roller in the bin. Clean mixing bucket with approx 50ml of acetone. Tip excess into another bad bucket or bin.
      Wait 15-20min until tacky…
      Apply a second coat of gelcoat to the 2x melamine sheets.
      Wait 15min or until just tacky
      Mix 1L of polyester resin with 10ml catalyst (if it’s hot) 20Ml (if it’s cold) - same mix as gel coat.
      Concentrate on one piece of melamine at a time or if u have more people do both sides at same time which is better!! Use new roller!! Roll polyester resin tacky gelcoat until it’s all wet.
      Lay 1st sheet of Fibreglass over the wet polyester
      Roll it out until you can’t see any bubbles and goes sort of see thru (might be brownish, blueish colour) make it really wet. Keep mixing resin when required.
      Apply 2nd, 3rd, 4th coat one after the other as fast as you can.
      Do the same to other sheet of melamine if not done with two people.
      Wait until it both melamine with new gelcoat, fibreglass is cured enough to touch and able to trim excess fibreglass with Stanley knife.
      If it’s gone off too hard for knife to cut use grinder with flapper to clean up edges and rough up surfaces on both melamine fibreglass surfaces.
      This next step needs to be rushed if you’re doing straight away.
      Zero out your scales with mix bucket on it.
      If your epoxy is a 2:1 mix ratio…. Mix 600g of epoxy part A, then add 300g of part b - which will bring total weight to 900grams…. Add 3.5 good hand full of aerosil to epoxy mix before you start mixing. (Wear dust mask when mixing aerosil(bad stuff)) mix it up and you may have to add a little more aerosil until pretty thick. Don’t mix too thick or it’s a pain to apply.
      Scrape epoxy all over one melamine Fibreglass sheet. Use grout trowel until even. Keep mixing epoxy like a mad man.
      Squash plywood to this in correct orientation
      Apply epoxy resin with grout trowel like a madman to marine ply. And other layer of marine ply.
      Apply epoxy resin to Marine ply like a madman again except you’ll be sweating! Once good even layer. Squash the last Fibreglass melamine
      Now screw all the battery screws thru pre determined positions. Do it evenly and in stages. Don’t go hard out straight away. Bring it down gradually. Epoxy will ooze out everywhere. Clean up as you go.
      Wait overnight to cure.
      Clean up your new transom chunck edges while it’s all screwed together.
      Take battern screws out after this. Crack it out and it should look beautiful.
      Now you have to notch out the bottom 40mm of the piece to key in to where you left that bit.
      Dummy fit until it goes in nice. You can trim it up until it dummy fits easy. Don’t stress too much about gaps. It’ll only mean you use more epoxy glue later.
      Once it fits ok trace where motor well inner skin touches.
      Grind and rough up where ever you marked to and around all off the edges.
      Cut strip of Fibreglass into 75mm strips approx 500mm long and all other sizes.
      Time to glue in with epoxy.
      Scrape epoxy where ever new transom touches.
      Put fresh transom in. It’ll make a big mess.
      Wipe down where ever epoxy ozzzes. Use cloth tape to hold epoxy ozz in. Wait for harden.
      Clean up with grinder.
      Time to glass in to new transom. It’ll suck doing under motor well…
      Now if you’re still reading this and you want me to say more just say lol
      I’ll make this into a video one day…..
