Hi Rich. I am a 6 year river fly fisherman and want to try the surf. Thank you so much for the video. You don't realize how much you DON'T know until you listen to people like you . Been a life long beach person and had no idea all this beach structure was occurring (except for sandbars). Hope healthier days are in your future. Patrick.
Once again, swamped with work so I apologize for the late reply. Thanks for the kind words and for the sub. Yeah, lots goes on at most beaches and it's the fishes world, so they relate to it all. Had a couple vertigo episodes about 3 weeks back because I pushing too hard. I was fishing late tides that week and one night I fish until 3:30 am, the following night 4:30 am, and then the following night after that I was heading out to fish at around 11:00. I got all the way to the beach and threw a vertigo as I pulled into the parking lot. I turned around and drove home with my head spinning and 40 minutes later when I got home, it was pretty much gone. I should have just taken a nap on the bed in my van lol. Had another vertigo a couple days later (a short one) but nothing since then. At 68 years old, I guess I just can't fish as hard as I'm accustomed to doing lol. I'll never be ready for the couch ;-) Be well and stay safe.
I have watched the whole series up to this point. I came looking for fishing tips and feel like I'm getting a masterclass. I'm sure that guy's comment was sarcastic. Thanks Rich I might spend the next few nights watching these over and over so I know I didn't miss anything.

Hi TF. Very sorry for the late reply. I had vertigo issues again that dragged on for a while but I'm back now. Thanks for the kind words and yeah, it's been a messed up couple of years. 2 falls ago I missed the entire fall run. Last year, I missed the last half of it. Then Covid showed up, which I dodged, then vertigo again lol. I've been spin free for 3 months now, finished my album (long overdue) and working on getting it mastered and out the door. I'm working on a few videos, done some fishing, BUT MOST OF ALL, I'm hoping to make it through a full fall season without any more problems. For the last couple years I've wanted to take 3-4 weeks and just fish my way down the coast from VB to Charleston SC where my sister lives. I put a bed in my van and I've been dreaming of this run for a while and I'm hoping to make it this fall. At 68 y/o I'm still strong as a bull, but I'm not getting any younger, so I want to put a check mark on this one. Here's hoping for a great fall run. Be well.
@@richtroxler Hi Rich, vertigo is terrible! I have had a bout of it before as well initially thought it was the end but it wasnt 😅 luckily it went away. Thanks for the kind words. I'm hoping to stay in action through this fall fishing season lol. Wow..great information thank you for sharing all that knowledge. As a starter I never even thought about it now I'm looking forward to seeing the beach from a totally different perspective. Again thank you and hopping you are well.
Thank you for taking the time to put theses videos together. I watch a ton of fishing videos, but I have yet to come across videos that have such a good explanation of an approach to fish the beach. Also, I am very glad to hear you are on the mend. Each day is a blessing and hope you stay in good health.

Thank you sir, you are a fount of knowledge! I’m over in San Diego. Those of us who fish from shore focus mainly on halibut, corbina and surf perch. What I’ve learned from your videos is priceless. I used to just see a beach, but now I actually see the beach for what it really is. Glad to hear you are feeling better. Thanks again!

It's been pretty good for the past year. Had a few vertigo bouts during the fall fishing season, but when your 68 and out fishing until 4:30 every night, I guess I was asking for it lol. All in all, I can't complain compared to what I went through. Thanks for your thoughts and have a pleasant holiday.

A bus 🚌 hit me in july and bedded for 2 months. İt took me another month to be able to walk to beach 🏖 ı know it feels. How suddenly it can ende or worse paralyse
I'm glad you're feeling better! As for plugs in general, my friend Zeno Hromin put out a book call "The Art of Surfcasting With Lures" that has had 3 pressings but has just gone out of print. You can still get copies most anywhere (ie Amazon, etc.) and it is well worth the price. I might do a few quickies on some unusual jigs / plugs, or different techniques for fishing them. Thanks for watching. Stay safe during these trying times.

Hi Mary. Sorry for my late reply. I am very happy to be doing well and have avoided Covid so far. I have started taking on work again, but leaving enough time to do some fishing. Thank you for watching and stay safe.
Great video Rich! Just found your channel. I had my first bout of vertigo over the summer and lasted over a month. It really gave me a new appreciation for everything!
Hi Mark. I hope you enjoy my videos. Yup, vertigo is no fun, that's for sure. With Meniere's disease in my right ear, I'll have to deal with it off and on for the rest of my life. It seems to be under control via meds but does rear it's ugly little head every now and again when I push to hard. My biggest problem is I don't get enough rest aka burn the candle at both ends and that's when it hits me. And like you it changed the way I look at things. My new saying is that "Every day is a gift, to be appreciated, and NEVER taken for granted." I hope yours stays away. Be well and stay safe.
Hey Rich, Gerry in Ponte Vedra FL. You sound so much like John Skinner. I'm from NYC area and know and have fished Long Island. The beaches here in my area did confuse me as I was remembering the beaches from up north. We are now in the end of the Pompano migration and this video did make me rethink what to look for on the beach. Mostly the current sweeps southward and sputniks are required to hold ground. Water color is also hard to read because the transition from shallow to deep is way beyond my casting distance. You have reinforced to me that I don't have to try and bomb it out there because Pompano like coquina clams, (periwinkles), and sand fleas which are at the low water line when the waves recede. You gave me a new tactic to try. Go for the troughs and holes which I have seen at low tide and try closer casts. The Pomps are after bait and I see the bait close to shore. No need for the 14' Pompano rods but a nice 10-11 footer would do. Glad to hear your feeling better and will wet your lines again in Va. Beach and NC. Go get a nice one. Gerry
Hi Gerry. Very sorry for the late reply. I had a health issues again that dragged on for a while but I'm back now. I've known John for a long time. We were both affiliated with noreast.com back in it's heyday. He's a regular on Zeno's Surfcaster's Journal now I think. I haven't spoken to him since I moved down here, but I've messaged Zeno a few times. I should keep better contact with them. I still talk to the greek all the time. I have to agree with you, the beaches in Va are different than up north but not as different as FL. Even up north, there were times when the bass were right up on the shore eating mole crabs (with sponge) or after a wicked blow when the surf clams would get washed up and cracked around the inlets and groins. Bait and structure, in that order. Structure, without bait is nothing. Bait will find structure, predators will find structure, the fisherman's job is to find all three. Thanks for watching and I will be having new content coming in the near future. Be well.
Hi Josh. Thank you for those very kind words. I am enjoying life and I consider every day a gift, to be appreciated, and never taken for granted. That's my new sign off on my videos as well. Be well and stay safe.
Keep up the good work... You are the best of the lot.. Still wondering if you got time for buck tailing on shallow bays... How to use them to get best out of them...
I'll try to cover that this spring if we're not all confined to out houses. I use them a lot in certain places I fish in late April and May / June so I'll bring the camera and get some footage if I can. Thanks for watching and stay safe during these trying times.
This comment just popped up in my feed under "not responded". Apparently it's from 3 years ago. I'm not sure what happened but please accept my most sincere apologies for not responding to your post. I try to respond to everybody who posts on my channel, so a belated thank you for watching my video.
Great info, quick question i also fish in Virginia, eastern shore to be exact and one thing I’ve noticed is that some waves will break a little bit off the beach then start to build up only slightly smaller and break again into the surf zone, the surface of the water in between the first breaking wave and the last right in the surf zone most times being a frothy white mess. With the waves breaking and reforming slightly smaller ones does this mean there is deeper water in between that the surrounding areas?
Hi Ryan, When a wave breaks on a bar or on bottom, and then continues toward shore as a white frothy mess, this is called a spilling breaker and typically indicates a shallow gradually rising bottom. When a wave breaks on a bar, and the remaining wave reforms with little or no white froth, just a roller that makes it all the way to shore and then plunges, that indicates that there is a trough (deeper water) behind the bar. When waves roll all the way to shore and break on shore, that means deeper water rising sharply at the shoreline. I give a fairly good explanation and some good video footage of these on my video "Understanding Wave & Wave Action" Thanks for watching.
Hi Justin. Long story. The short version was that I didn't intend to retire there. Too expensive. It was tough leaving 40 + years of fishing experience behind but it's also been fun learning my new area and species. Keeps life interesting. Thanks for watching. Be well and stay safe.
Thanks for the valuable information. I really like learning more ways to become a more successful fisherman however your videos don't have too much volume to them. Even with headphones on I struggle to hear what you're saying.
Hi Gregory. My earlier videos had volume problems but my later ones should be fine. My computer had problems sorting out which audio device to use (I run 2 DAWS on my computer also). It sounded fine when working on them but when the movies were compiled the audio got messed up. Really bad for phones, better on computer, best on computer to external amp. I've sorted it all out now. Thanks for suffering through them lol. Be well and stay safe.
Hi David. I enjoy passing a little something forward to a sport that has given me a whole lot enjoyment through the years, despite the fact that it does take a lot more time and effort than most people realize. As for guide services, I'd have to say no. I've always been pretty much a lone wolf most of my like when it comes to fishing and while I like to teach people how to think and what to look for, I guard my specific spots fairly carefully. Also, I've been fortunate in my 6 years here to be accepted into a fairly tight knit group of locals with whom we share info among ourselves (mostly lol) and I can't betray their trust. However, if you are a subscriber, then there should be a way for you to message me your email. I would be happy to give you insights as to what's going on locally throughout the season. If you can't message me, then look me up on FB (with a message to identify yourself, because I get a load of friend requests). Thanks for watching and stay safe. This area is a bit of a hot spot in VA.
Great video Rich! Thanks for putting so much useful information in there, it really helps a newbie like me out :) What rigs are you typically using for the different areas in the surf or for different kinds of fish? Thanks!
Hi Phil. For fishing chunk bait for big Red Drum (VA) and Striped Bass (LI) I use a fish finder rig aka sinker slider rig. It's pretty simple really. Large circle hooks (12/0) snelled on very short 80 lb mono leader (4" or less) to a 230 lb Spro swivel. I cover this stuff on another video in my surf fishing series called "Gear and stuff" or something like that. Thanks for watching. If you haven't already done so, don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss anything. Stay safe through these trying times.
Hi there @richtroxler. The most informative video ive seen. Thanks for the shared knowledge. I dont think there are any videos are as informative and no fisherman would share this knowledge. Thanks a lot. Can you also make a lesson on surf perch fishing?
Hi Jeffery. I've never fished for surf perch, so I wouldn't know their feeding habits. Most fish, and I say most fish, because some fish have some strange feeding behaviors, but most fish follow the same general rules with regards to structure, current, baits and tide. Conditions vary quite a bit for species ,but the rest is usually somewhat predictable, at least as a starting point. Thanks for watching and stay safe.
Hi Charles. Sorry for the late reply. I've been working on some music projects and getting some of it out on streaming platforms. I wish I could clone myself LOL. Thank for watching!
Once again, swamped with work so I apologize for the late reply. Thanks for the kind words and for watching. I get this request a lot and my reply is that I have always fished mostly alone and at night. Hi Gareth. Sorry for the late reply. One of the problems of owning your own business is you get really busy sometimes lol. I normally ignore stupid comments but seeing as he was from Long Island, fishing beaches I've fished for decades, making a big deal about catching little rat striped bass, I found it difficult to bite my tongue lol. Thanks for subbing and stay safe.

Wow what great explanation. Thank you Prof Troxler. The USA is blessed with lots of coastline.
Hi Lud. You are very welcome. The US does have a lot of coastline and a lot of different type coastline. Thanks for watching!
You have quite a series on reading the beach! Very eye-opening - thanks for the valuable info. Glad you're doing well.
Thanks big. Thank for watching and for the kind words. I hope I get to fish this spring and not get stuck in lock down. If it ain't one thing it's another lol. Stay safe during these trying times.
I recently discovered your videos. I love their informative content and no, I do not find them boring. I find them essential. Thank you very much.
Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoy them. Unfortunately, was out of commission again for a while, so for now I'm just trying to get caught up on responding to everyone and trying to finish up on some new content and other stuff. Thanks for hanging in there with me and I'll get this thing going again.
Great Information as always and I'm happy to hear you're doing well ✌🏻
Thanks diesel. Of course now that I'm feeling better I'll probably get ordered to stay in my house until further notice. Good luck with that, they'll be chasing me up and down the beach ;-) If you haven't already done so, don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss anything. Stay safe through these trying times.
Excellent video. These are truly gifts to beginner and intermediate fishermen

Again thank you and hopping you are well.
You are very welcome and thanks for watching. And thanks for the sub. Be well and stay safe.
Thank you for taking the time to put theses videos together. I watch a ton of fishing videos, but I have yet to come across videos that have such a good explanation of an approach to fish the beach. Also, I am very glad to hear you are on the mend. Each day is a blessing and hope you stay in good health.
Thank you for you kind words and wishes and for taking the time to watch my videos. I hope they help you on your surf fishing journey. Be well and stay safe.
Rich thank you for this man it’s great stuff I was still pretty novice when it came to reading the beach and identifying the right spots but your videos helped me understand so much
You are the man 👍🤙🏻
Hi Matthew. You're very welcome. I'm glad you found my video helpful and thanks for watching. Be well.

Hi Bruce. Halibut from shore, that must be a blast! Thank you for the kind words and I'm glad you found my videos useful. I hope they help you on your surf fishing journey. Be well and stay safe.
Good to hear you're doing better. Thanks for the great video!
Thanks Dustin. Now I'm hoping I don't get locked down because of Covid-19. They'll have to chase me up and down the beach lol. Thanks for watching and stay safe during these trying times.
Good to see you back Rich, as always great presentation... Thank you!
Hi Jeffery. Good to be back and thank you for watching. Stay safe.
It's good to to hear that you are feeling better. I love watching your content. I learn, so much about fishing off the beach.
Hi Steve. Thanks for the kind words and I'm glad you find my information useful. Thank you for watching and stay safe.
thank you so match for sharing your experiance.take care.
The pleasure was mine. Thank you for watching and be well.
I just watched 5 or 6 of your videos in a row. Such tremendous information. Thank you and continued good health!
Thanks for watching and continued good health to everybody. These are strange days indeed. Be well.
Wishing you the best in health and thank you for your passion and knowledge
Hi Michael. Sorry for the late reply. been on a 7 day a week work binge. Thank you for your kind wishes, they are appreciated. And thank you for your sub. Be well and stay safe.
Great to hear your health is on the mend!
Great information....heading to the Outer Banks and will do some Surf Casting while on vacation for the week. I feel a little bit more knowledgeable now with the help of your videos.
Thank you
Hi YS. Very sorry for the late reply. I had a health issue that dragged on for a while but I'm back now. OBX has some great areas., so good luck and enjoy your vaca (if you haven't already taken it lol). Thanks for watching!
This is a sumary of what u taugth us b4. This is not oceanograpy. This is pure fishing knowledge. I would like to see more on jigs and lures. Modern ones tho.
Awesome video thanks for uploading !
Once again, swamped with work so I apologize for the late reply. Thanks for the kind words and you are welcome. Be well and stay safe.
Rick, thank you for you insights and suggestions. Please, keep them coming.

Hi Rich, I've learned a lot from your videos. Thanks again and take care, Mickey
Great video- thank you for taking the time to do this. I get a lot out of your common-sense approach!
You're welcome stick. I'm glad you find them useful and thanks for watching. Stay safe during these trying times.
Your tips helped my son catch his first bass ever (my profile pic). 43 lbs 46 inches. Thank you so much for your help
Hi Stan. Dang, that's an impressive first bass! Give your son a big high five for me! I'm glad you found my information useful and thank you for watching. If you haven't already done so, don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss anything. Stay safe through these trying times.
Happy to hear that you are well. Thanks for the great video!
Hi Mary. Sorry for my late reply. I am very happy to be doing well and have avoided Covid so far. I have started taking on work again, but leaving enough time to do some fishing. Thank you for watching and stay safe.
Amazing Stuff Rich, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
KEEP THEM COMING...Thanks Rich!!
Hi MK. If we get locked down, it might be all I have to do to keep from going crazy lol. Thanks for watching and stay safe.
@@richtroxler glad your feeling better. stay healthy!!!
Be well.
Great info thank you !
You are most welcome and thanks for watching. Stay safe during these trying times.
Thank you for sharing so much knowledge sir, great delivery as well, it makes me happy to know you’re recovering and keep enjoying life.
God may give you health!
I'll try to cover that this spring if we're not all confined to out houses. I use them a lot in certain places I fish in late April and May / June so I'll bring the camera and get some footage if I can. Thanks for watching and stay safe during these trying times.
thanks from Morocco.
You're very welcome, and thank you for watching.
Thanks for the tips!
Excellent video. Just curious why you moved off Long Island?
Hi Justin. Long story. The short version was that I didn't intend to retire there. Too expensive. It was tough leaving 40 + years of fishing experience behind but it's also been fun learning my new area and species. Keeps life interesting. Thanks for watching. Be well and stay safe.
Thanks for the valuable information. I really like learning more ways to become a more successful fisherman however
your videos don't have too much volume to them.
Rich thanks for taking the time to do the videos! Do u ever offer your services as a guide/teacher? I’m also in Va and fish that area
Hello, Rich!
What tide you better fish?
On Moon cycles which tide is better?
God bless you!
I prefer 2 hours on either side of high tide and new moon is best. Be well and stay safe.
The video was fine. I need all of your info
There's more videos to see lol. Thanks for watching and for the sub!
Great video Rich! Thanks for putting so much useful information in there, it really helps a newbie like me out :)
What rigs are you typically using for the different areas in the surf or for different kinds of fish? Thanks!
@@richtroxler thanks so much, I'll check it out! You stay safe too, way I figure beach fishing is a pretty good way to isolate yourself haha
Yup, I'm hoping they'll let me fish from my kayak in the bay. I'd call that social distancing lol.
You actually pass on information. I do not mind the oceanography lesson, otherwise how could we learn? Thanks.
Hello again Pedro. Information is power, not just in fishing, but in all things. Thanks for watching.
🙏
Hi Charles. Sorry for the late reply. I've been working on some music projects and getting some of it out on streaming platforms. I wish I could clone myself LOL. Thank for watching!
Thank you very much for all the information provided, very detailed. Can I join you as a fishing buddy? :)
Once again, swamped with work so I apologize for the late reply. Thanks for the kind words and for watching. I get this request a lot and my reply is that I have always fished mostly alone and at night. Besides, most people would get annoyed fishing with me because I move around a lot and I'm not very talkative when I fish lol. Be well and stay safe.
Really would not pay attention to te comments, have used your advise very successfully
I wish it was translated, I love fishing, but I don't understand English very well
Sorry, I'm not sure if I can translate at my end. I'll look into it.
@@richtroxler Thanks, I'd love to learn
How to read the sea
And knowing where to hunt

Please draw the diagram, please!
Not sure what you are asking. Thanks for the sub.
Who ever left that comment obviously didn’t get the point.
