Retromodding is a 1700 may battery if you were on helders site they got those specs wrong. Also The Clean juice charges way too fast for a Lithium ion battery. Meaing it's going to lose capacity faster, whereas retromodding's battery runs a constant charge rate lower then Helders. The longevity to me means more. If you check out Mahko's video on both of these batteries he goes in depth on capacity discharge rates, recharge times the types of batteries they are and capacity. As well as of key notes, like these are both non replaceable batteries because of the adhesive holding down the thin pcbs. They will break off if you attempt to remove the cell from the board. Heat and a pry tool not really the safest method. And retromodding's battery although not have a jis connecter is not sealed with epoxy but instead liquid rubber coated insulation and can be peeled off. They also have where the battery lead are wired onto the board, a jis soldering point so you can actually solder a jis female on it if you decide to. Making both of them for lack of better terms equally "replacable" but not really replacable.
Retromodding has just released a new model of their USB-C battery with all the same features you outlined in the video, but also comes with an equal 1700mah battery. Just ordered one for myself!
I love it when this sort of thing happens. It created competition in the market. Also, I'll be buying the CleanJuice since I didn't know it was a drop in. I thought it would requirr soldering!
A couple of years back I was given a GBA that someone didn't want and it came with a Logic3 rechargeable battery. Even if I could charge it, I'm almost certain it would be poor in comparison to either of these. I think it was likely produced back when the GBA was still the main handheld by Nintendo.
Hand held legends are my favorite. I may be bias since they’re only 30 mins from my place. I prefer there battery being separate. Let’s you do what you want.
They’re good people. I happen to live in town with them and was helping them with their 3D printed parts while they were waiting for their new printer.
I love Handheld Legend. I went with their clean juice on my GBA just because of the capacity. Easy install and when battery tech improves I’ll easily be able to upgrade.
Just installed the clean juice into my GBA modded with an AGS-101 screen. Super easy install and I love that I can always convert it back to using AA's if needed. Your videos are great and helped me determine what to purchase.
Thank you for all your informative videos. They are extremely helpful for aspiring modding hobbyists! I noticed that as of this week, Funnyplaying now has a GBA rechargeable USB-C battery pack. I'd love to hear how it compares to these!
I think the CleanJuice wins based on the fact you can go back to AA’s without having to put the continuity clip back in. Not having to remove this clip for the install is icing on the cake as removing it feels like mutilation to the Gameboy.
I went with the HHL battery, and the recent models do the low battery light as well. I don't play heavily like I did in my younger years but so far, I have not had to charge it up after just a few hours of use.
I would mod the RetroModding battery by cutting the wires and adding a connector. That way i can replace the battery when/if it dies (probably with one with more capacity) and it already comes with the low battery indicator.
Another great video. Please make the background music a bit lower though (a lot lower :P). The actual material is great. I was debating about modding my GBA, and you have some great guidance on the process.
I’m not sure I’m all that impressed with the face they cover the connector in resin to prevent diy replacements, but at least anyone that knows what they’re doing would see that they can just cut the wires and connect to those.
CleanJuice wins simply for not soldering and epoxying the battery to the board. Also, looks like they've updated the product to include low battery and a charging LED, so the other model has no advantage other than not making you plug in a battery to the board, which is hardly an advantage at all considering how easy it is to do.
Retrosix has potential BUT they seem to rush releases. CleanAmp needed a "puresilence" upgrade mod, Cleanjuice needs a "low-power" add-on, Dehum/Dehiss kit changed almost at the very first day of release... Don't get me wrong, I mean I see so much potential there but it would be awesome if everything was a complete mod from the beginning and people wouldn't need to solder stuff and then more stuff on stuff etc.
That's true. There's always issues with early adoption, but I think since they have a lot of there projects under their belt, we'll see better product releases in the future, at least I hope. Cheers buddy!
Perfect video, as always. There's actually a third, cheaper option: a DIY battery pack with a TP4056 board + some generic LiPo cell like the Turnigy 2000mAh from HobbyKings. Will you be doing a video about it?
I agree with just having options for a battery pack is nice, even if both have some cons, or pros. What I want to see is more widely available GBA shell color options from manufacturers. For some reason, solid teal isn't an available option from most sellers, with Retrosix getting that first start with their prestige shells. As far as I know, I looked pretty much everywhere and turned out empty prior to the prestige shells. FunnyPlaying is coming up with their own shells now, and absolutely love them, just their color variety at the moment only ranges on the transparent side. I know they'll be releasing some solid color options and hope they can get every single color available in the spectrum of colors.
I'm a huge fan of options too! I think its never been a better time to be in the modding scene! That's awesome that FunnyPlaying is getting into the aftermarket shell scene, excited to see what they have to offer! I love the RetroSix shell, I havent gotten one yet but they are like the plastic version of Boxy Pixel shells, the come ready to accept IPS screens and aftermarket batteries! Cheer Buddy!
Thanks Dave! Lol, oh man sold out already? Well that could be a good thing, I think they are working on a new design which will include the low voltage indicator. Hopefully it releases soon! Cheers bud!
They are on the pricey side but I think for the amount of polish both these kits have, they are a fantastic value! I’d be interested to hear how your mod comes out. Let me know! Cheers!
I hope there is something similar coming for the SP soon (a USB-C charger at least). I see the classic GBA getting so many mod upgrades but the SP is kinda forgotten, besides the IPS :( Great video man! Keep it up!
Thanks buddy! Very true, the SP is a little more tricky to upgrade since it already comes with a rechargeable battery. It would be nice to see more mods for it! Who knows what the future holds? It's a very exciting time to be modding! Cheers!
The problem with the SP is that there is very little room to work with. So a drop in kit is very unlikely to ever happen. Some people have removed the stock charging port and installed a USB C port but it is a custom mod.
For my money, as soon as I held the wide grip classic GBA, there was no turning back… in fact, it always seemed to me like the whole point of modding a GBA was to give it features that were standard on the SP.
Could it be possible to add a JST to the retro mod and use the battery from the clean juice? Given my main hobby we always try to come up with the “makes the most sense” solution to the problem.
Yes, that would be essentially the same thing! I should have mentioned that in the video. It’s not as convenient but it should do the same thing! Thank you for the comment! Cheers buddy!
I think there are 2 versions of the CleanJuice battery for the DMG. One is the XL which has a higher capacity. I'm not 100% sure, but I do think it would be slightly lighter than 4 AA batteries. Also, I think that it improves battery life significantly. Cheers!
Do these usb lipo battery mods allow you to continue playing while charging? I was hoping to see it mentioned in the video since if they can’t, that’s an absolute deal breaker for me compared to using a few sets of standard rechargeable AA’s.
@@MachoNachoProductions That is really awesome! That definitely makes it better than swapping AA's since you can just top up off a battery pack when it starts to get low. Thanks for the reply!
@@einsteinx2 i know I'm late, but I believe that you can also charge from modern phones... just get a cord that is USB-C on both ends and you can get juice on-the-go!
I love these console mods since these replace 2 AA batteries i want to see if they work for other products like tv remotes xbox controllers and whatever else takes 2 AA
The 2 AA batteries I have in my GBC have a 4,000mah life (which could be used in the GBA as well). I don't really see this mod entirely necessary given that rechargables do a fine job.
While I do basically agree..... different strokes for different folks ya know? Some people may not want to bother with keeping track of a battery charger and the rechargeable batteries. I had them for a while, when I was a teen and got my first cheap CD player. It ate up batteries like crazy. I remember riding to school with the twisted metal 2 PS1 CD in my CD player getting amped up to rob zombie only to be deflated when we finally got to school. At any rate, yeah... I suppose most people would be better off. For about the same cost as one of these mods, you could buy a good eneloop charger setup with a panasonic charger, 12AA, 4AAA, and some C and D adapters. Keep in mind that you can't just compare a battery mAh to mAh. Battery chemistry and how it's being used (namely how hot it gets, and how high the power draw is) can make huge differences in how long a battery lasts even between two different batteries of equal mAh ratings but different battery chemistries
Cleanjuice obviously didn't factor in power loss to the power regulator. I would choose the retro modding for that alone, and just solder a new, and higher capacity battery to the board.
This might be a stupid question but will that 1700mah pack last longer then the rechargable 2800mah AA batteries (5600mah total w/ 2 batteries) I already have?
That’s a great question Albert! I’ve been wondering that myself. Not sure if the two battery technologies are comparable. Nimh vs lithium. Would be great to know. Hopefully someone can chime in. Cheers dude!
My advice - don't play with the cable, let it stay connected because it's very fragile and won't come out easily. The battery pack doesn't fit very well and takes few tries until it sticks the right way and doesn't pop out . Also you need back cover with a hole already, otherwise it will not close ! EDIT : I would seriously like to hear a feedback from others who actually bought the battery kit. Just after one minute the battery started rumbling and got swollen
It's cool how these companies breathe new life into the GBA and other consoles. I'm late to the party and just ordered a funny playing IPS for my SP. Thanks for all your uploads Macho!
could the Genki or Homespot for the nintendo switch work with either of these batteries? that is, allow connection of bluetooth devices to the gba via the USB-C port?
Great question! The usb c ports on the batteries are for charging only. No data can pass through the port so Bluetooth connectivity isn’t possible. I hope that answers your questions. Cheers buddy!
How would you compare these to boxypixel 2000 mAh? Also, I understand based on previous tests EZ Flash Omega kills the battery in no time compared to krikzz everdrive-gba x5, why would you recommend it or think is the best GBA flash cart? Great content by the way!
Thanks Freddy! Great question! I think when it comes to cost verse performance the EZ Flash is tough to beat. Krikzz makes the best flash carts hands down with the best customer support but it costs more. The Krikzz carts also do take quite a bit of battery life, not as much as the EZ flash but still a decent amount. I just think in terms of value EZ flash is a great option. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions thanks for answering, I might give it a try, just purchased a boxypixel GBA after seeing your video, how are these batteries compared to boxypixel 2000 mAh?
Freddy Rojas you won’t be able to use both the retro modding and the HHL solution I’m the boxy pixel shell. The battery and TP4056 charging module are bespoke to the boxy pixel shell. The USB C charging port is off too the side, not centered to where it would be if there was a battery compartment. Simply put, if you’re using a boxy pixel shell you need the TP4056, 3D printed holder, and the diode.
@@border056 thank you for the clarification, the boxypixel console I purchased comes with the USB C charging port + a 2000 mAh battery, I was thinking on comparing the performance and when battery dies in the future to replace it with a retro modding or HHL depending on performance.
They are very good! I havent done a battery test but they are a larger capacity than the CleanJuice and RM battery. I think it's safe to say you'll get a good amount of playtime with the Boxy Pixel battery.
@@MachoNachoProductions thats weird. Maybe its the camera mic static? Try and max the volume on the computer with headphones or lower it and see if the static appears then? I tried it on 3 different headphones, 3 different devices and all volume levels and it always appear. Maybe its just my hearing is too sensitive for my own good......
This is fantastic just what I need instead of buying batteries thanks I will install one on my gameboy advanced I have funny playing ips screen too it's fantastic

I have been looking for a battery mod like this all over but they seem sold out everywhere.. even in your links they're just gone idk what to do. Help?
I'm sure retro modding will be restocking their battery soon. The cleanjuice one is being redesigned and should be released soonish. Just keep an eye on the website or follow them on Instagram and/or twitter. They will usually announce when they restock/launch products. I hope this helps. Best of luck! Cheers!
Great question! As far as I know, there isn't a battery mod kit for the Pocket. There are some custom mods that can be done but they require off the shelf components and significant mods to the shell. I am hoping that we will get a mod for the Pocket in the near future! Cheers!
Hand Held Legend will be getting some in stock soon, and it should be the new version. They are awesome and I'm sure that it'll be worth the wait! Cheers!
I dont want a flatscreen tv i dont want a ps5 or An Xbox one i dont want no fancy gaming pc all i want for Christmas is a Gameboy advanced with the complete collection of Pokémon Boxed in platic..... Is that to much to ask.......
Just buy a 600mah Lipo cell with built in overcharge/current protection. £5 on ebay. Fits in SP and others. No DS tape required to break PCB. They were a UK company? Insult.
I would seriously like to hear a feedback from others too who actually bought the battery kit. Just after one minute of charging and the battery started rumbling and got swollen. Not the best first experience :(
So, I am considering making a GBA with ISP V2 and using a Type C rechargeable battery setup. I will probably drop a new speaker in, but not use an amp package. There are two things I would like to do as well, but haven't decided on doing yet. Installing Red LED lights for the sides with a transparent red button set, in a black case, or transparent black case with red button pads, and only the shoulder buttons lighting up. But if I did the red lights, I would want to possibly replace the regular charge indicator light to be red at full battery, and a blue when low battery, and I don't even know if that is possible?
Sounds like a sweet build! I think it should be possible. I’m not too familiar with changing the battery led indicator, but I think it consists of 2 surface mounted leds, one green and one red. You would have to swap both. Not sure what size smd led you would need though. I hope that helps a little. Best of luck on the build! Cheers!
They are on the pricey side for sure. I do think the features and ease of installation make them a decent value. Having a good set of rechargeable AA batteries is a great alternative. Cheers buddy!
the handheld rechargeable battery mod sucks ass. The thing only lasted a week on my modded gba and last night, i noticed the thing starting to heat up to the point of which i believe to melt the lid cover. After that, it just died. I am upset at the fact that I waited so long to do a modded gba and have the rechargeable battery installed to have this as a result. any other recommendations other than the two mentioned on the video?
Oh man sorry to hear that. I would reach out to the company and ask if they can help you out. They may be interested in seeing your GBA to see what went wrong. I am going to be doing a review of a new battery soon so we’ll see how it is. Stay tuned buddy! Happy New Years!
Thank you for the info! I'm sure it depends on a bunch of factors but like you I couldn't replicate the advertised 14 hours. I'm sure there are some cases where it is possible. Thanks again! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Well like im doing ips, clean amp, default brightness with the clean juice and it legit only gets about 10hours and 10mins tops.
@@COFF3E Yeah, its strange that it isn't closer to the 14 hour mark. I'm not sure what the issue could be. It's good to know that mine isn't the only one with the issue. Thanks again for providing your experience and the times you are getting with your CleanJuice! Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions Yeah hopefully retrosix figures out whats going on or handheld legend does. Maybe they got those figures with brightness at the lowest setting?
"Just replace the battery when it dies, thanks to this mod" Snap PCB due to DS tape. "CUT TAPE" Boom. "HEAT TAPE" Blow up lipo? And PCB? Foam pad. Seamen also works, ask David. Ignorance is bliss. Profit is stupid.

Battery chemistry and how it's being used (namely how hot it gets, and how high the power draw is) can make huge differences in how long a battery lasts even between two different batteries of equal mAh ratings but different battery chemistries
How long do your AA's last with IPS v2?
Do either of these models support charging while playing? I understand that's an issue.
What type of cable do you use USBC to USB-C? Or usb c to usb a ??? Or it don’t matter
I literally have this battery out for delivery right now haha
Awesome Alan! You are going to really like it! Cheers!
When is the V2 version of cleanjuice coming out??? All the original ones are sold out and I'm dying to put this kit in my gba!
I'm not 100% sure, but I heard that it should come out in about a month. Hopefully it's sooner than that. Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions V1.1 of the battery is in stock!
Hell yeah, this should be good! Thanks Tito!
No problem! I hope you enjoy the video!
Solid video man, great work. Thanks for making comparisons and testing the batteries. Keep it up!!!
Thanks man! I appreciate it! Will do!
I just use AA lipos - the ones with micro USB charhing sockets in the side.
question how would I add wireless to this, could I just soder the coils pos neg wire to the board?
It's cool how these companies breathe new life into the GBA and other consoles. I'm late to the party and just ordered a funny playing IPS for my SP. Thanks for all your uploads Macho!
Anyone with a cleanjuice have problems with the low battery warning. The warning light never turns on. It just makes a clicking noise and turns off.
Looks like the Clean juice wins to me. IF needed you can pop it out and pop some AA batteries in. That is one serious advantage.
could the Genki or Homespot for the nintendo switch work with either of these batteries? that is, allow connection of bluetooth devices to the gba via the USB-C port?
I wonder if u can replace the battery with a higher mah? Like if its 1700 mah can you replace the battery with 2000 mah? Would the module accept it?
Do either work with USB-C to USB-C cables?
The static noise is there there btw
Hmm, so weird. I still can't hear it.
Haha that could be! I keep listening to it and don’t hear it. I’d be very curious if other folks hear it.
This is fantastic just what I need instead of buying batteries thanks I will install one on my gameboy advanced I have funny playing ips screen too it's fantastic
Awesome dude! Both are great batteries! You’ll be happy with either! Cheers dude!
I would prefer both the CleanJuice and low battery indicator
That is a great choice! Although I don't think you could go wrong with either, both are great options! Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions Thanks!
I think I'm going to wait until the Hand Held Legend battery comes with the low battery indicator.
That's a good idea! Also, I'm sure they'll be adding other great features too! Should be a great product! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions They just released the updated board over the weekend so anyone who bought can now get the new one for free of charge if they bought it from handheld legends.
Awesome! Thanks for the heads up! Cheers!
May I ask, If you use Cleanjuice, Can you close battery door without make usb-c hole?
Yep, you can. The hole is totally optional. Hope that helps! Cheers!
Macho Nacho Productions Thank you.
Is there a game gear bat mod?
I have been looking for a battery mod like this all over but they seem sold out everywhere.. even in your links they're just gone idk what to do. Help?
I'm sure retro modding will be restocking their battery soon. The cleanjuice one is being redesigned and should be released soonish. Just keep an eye on the website or follow them on Instagram and/or twitter. They will usually announce when they restock/launch products. I hope this helps. Best of luck! Cheers!
You're the best, man. ❤️
No, you’re the best!
You inspire me and so many other people to be creative and be able to make ourselves something nice that we can keep for a lifetime. 🙏
Can you charge and play at the same time with these battery packs?
id also like to know that lol
@@techwolf1900 yes you can
So would theae types of mods work for other things that require 2 AAs?
Could i make a usbc ps3 controller or tv remote?
Most likely not since these are specific to the gba and their particular form factor and voltage rating. Cheers Red!
Are these batteries safe to use as I’ve heard they can explode?
Are there any battery mods for the pocket?
Great question! As far as I know, there isn't a battery mod kit for the Pocket. There are some custom mods that can be done but they require off the shelf components and significant mods to the shell. I am hoping that we will get a mod for the Pocket in the near future! Cheers!
Sucks they are out of stock everywhere, cause now I want one!
Hand Held Legend will be getting some in stock soon, and it should be the new version. They are awesome and I'm sure that it'll be worth the wait! Cheers!
anyone knows if the cleanjuice board supports more than 1700mAh?
Time for Sound Amps mods - please ♥
That’s a good point! I’ll have to look into those sometime in the future!
Insult.
I think next version of CleanJuice have low battery indicator!
I’m sure it will! It’s a very desirable/needed feature.
My clean juice overheated and stopped working. Possible fire hazard too I was upset
I would seriously like to hear a feedback from others too who actually bought the battery kit. Just after one minute of charging and the battery started rumbling and got swollen. Not the best first experience :(
Clean juice will have low power indicator on board very soon, less than a month!!
That's awesome! Very exciting! Cheers!
@@MachoNachoProductions Hey man, clean juice v1.1 with low battery indicator is out!
Cheers!
17 hundred million hours on the cleanjuice one? I cant convert that into days/ years...
Hand Held Legend for the win with the easy user swappable battery.
I need one for the Gameboy Pocket.... or the Color...
That is the one console I think would greatly benefit from a battery mod like this one!
One fore the gameboy color would be great too, now that we have an IPS mod for it. Cheers!
Price comparison?
Why not just use 2800mah rechargable batteries?
Is this already on sale?
Yep they should be available now.
do you sell modded gameboys?
My clean juice battery lasts for around 5 hours.
these battery mods are a good idea but there are not cheap!
They are on the pricey side for sure. I do think the features and ease of installation make them a decent value. Having a good set of rechargeable AA batteries is a great alternative. Cheers buddy!
@@MachoNachoProductions great video as always Tito!!!!!
Thanks buddy! Cheers!
the handheld rechargeable battery mod sucks ass.
So after testing battery life on the cleanjuice I can confirm that it doesn't last 14 hours on a full charge...
That could be. It’d be interesting to test that out.
I went with HHL.
"Just replace the battery when it dies, thanks to this mod"
Snap PCB due to DS tape.
"CUT TAPE"
Boom.
"HEAT TAPE"
Blow up lipo? And PCB?
Foam pad. Seamen also works, ask David.
Ignorance is bliss. Profit is stupid.
Im making my own battery mod :-)
Awesome! Sounds like a great project! Cheers!
They have both been sold out unfortunately.
Oh man, really?! Well, the good news is I hear there will be a new cleanJuice battery coming out soon! Cheers buddy!
Not worth it in my opinion if it cannot outlast two good quality rechargeable AA.
Quality rechargeable AA batteries are a great option! Mine served me well for many years. Still have my 8 year old Eneloops and they seem to still hold a decent charge. Cheers!
Or i could just keep using my energizer 2,300 mAh NiMH batteries.
