I have just thought about is that the good thing about exterior racks whether it be on the roof or like this one on a hitch, when you have been out on the bike and it has been wet and muddy you keep the mud on the outside of the vehicle rather than tracking the mud inside.
I have the super clamp, huge fan!
The greatest thing about this rack is the LIGHTWEIGHT. At 27 pounds, the freedom ex is the lightest tilting 2-bike hitch rack on the market, most racks like these are 45-55lbs.
Thanks for the review. I understand the struggle to find a rack compatible with racks/fenders, etc. Which brings up a related question -- would this clampy cradle work if you had, say, a frame bag? Or a 3rd water bottle cage??
Thule make a rack like this with a lights board, not used one personally but their stuff is very well made.
I've been contemplating this rack for a few weeks so was happy to see your review. I have hitches on both the front and rear of my Ford F150 and use an older model Saris T-Rex (I think) rack where the bikes hang off of a central bar. I have been unhappy with the amount of wobble in the rack when loaded and have to use straps to make the rack more secure when moving. Does the EX 2 have any degree of wobble when moving? Thanks again for your VERY timely review!
+Zeke Yount I think the wheel tray design helps in bike wobble. In our experience so far the 2 bike version with 2 25-30lb bikes is relatively stable. There is some movement in the rack but nothing that we'd consider excessive. I imagine the 4 bike version might wobble a bit more since there is a lot more weight cantilevered off the end, but haven't tried it first hand.
My car doesn't have a hitch, though I have thought about getting one installed. Right now I have a Saris Bones 2 racks, and I like it. It doesn't have any built in lock mechanism, so I don't leave my bike or rack on my car too much when I can't keep an eye on it.
+adamgtrap we used the Bones 3 for years. Getting a hitch is expensive but whoa is it convenient!
I had been living in an area with a crazy high bike theft rate, so I used a roof rack that you took your front wheel off to use. Lock the bike to the rack via your front drop out. Throw an extra cable lock around your bike and rack. Put your front wheel in your trunk. Never had any issues with theft that way.
Now that I'm living where bike theft isn't such an issue I'm thinking a hitch rack would be nice. Thanks for the review that Saris does look nice and I like that it's made in America. However, a standard tree pruner would probably cut right through that cable lock. I'd still use my own cable

How was visibility out the back of the vehicle when reversing? My friends have a rack on the back of their SUV and the camera that is usually helpful when reversing is rendered useless and even normal visibility is impaired so someone usually gets out of the vehicle to help when parallel parking.
Our van doesn't have a rear view camera so we look out the back window old school. In terms of that, you only just see the tops of the bikes and has good visibility.
Until recently, backup cameras were not standard features. You look out the windows the old school way.
Is the downtube cradle upside down?
Yes. Just realized that after we got home. May do a small update. However, it did seem to work fine upside down as well.

The reason for having a vehicle such as your Toyota mini van is to put your expensive bikes inside and secure them from being damaged. Sorry, but my automobiles have always been used to protect my bikes
Our primary use for the van these days is as a mini camper. So it's nice to not have to constantly be shuffling bikes in and out to set up the interior. For urban exploring we'll pack them inside, but when we are going out in the woods it is great to have them on the exterior.
