Hay-on-Wye, the town is famed for its many bookshops.
The history of the town and the castle are inextricably bound together since William de Breos II, one of the most infamously treacherous of the Norman Marcher Lords, built the present castle c.1200. According to legend, the castle was rebuilt in one night by the wife of William de Breos, Maud de St Valery (also known as Moll Wallbee), carrying the stones in her apron.
Hay Castle is a centre for arts, literature and learning, and after a major renovation project, Hay Castle reopened in May 2022.
The town lies on the south-east bank of the River Wye and is within the north-easternmost tip of the Brecon Beacons National Park, just north of the Black Mountains. The town is just on the Welsh side of the border with Herefordshire, England,
Hay-on-Wye is a destination for bibliophiles in the United Kingdom, with two dozen bookshops, many selling specialist and second-hand books.

King Richard put the property up for sale in 2011 and the charity Hay Castle Trust was formed in order to keep Hay Castle as a public building for the people of Hay and visitors to enjoy. The project then began to raise the funds required to make the building safe and useable and in 2016 Hay Castle Trust were delighted to receive a National Lottery Heritage Fund grant.
Hay Castle finally opened to the public on May 26th 2022 on the first day of the annual Hay Festival.
