  • The Outlaw Bookseller & Video Widow take a drive to Hay-On-Wye, the 'Book Town'. It's their first visit in over two years and they are a little disenchanted to see more bookshops gone, more new books and remainders replacing second hand, more cafes and boutiques and increasing gentrification. What is to be done?

I see what you mean about needing to spare at least 4 hours. I think I'd need a B & B there for a couple of nights to feel I'd done it justice - even taking into account it being less than what it was. At least you had good weather, after a 2 hr 40 min trip.

Yep, if you've not been before, it is worth a visit, but it's a stay overnight kind of place as you can't get there easily by public transport- trains will get you to Hereford, but it's a bus from there which could take up to an hour I'd say.

The days of picking up good SF in Hay are long past I think. The booksellers used not to be very knowledgeable. On my last visit there, a few years ago now, I picked up two Zelazny hardcover firsts, The Dream Master was one, for about £3 each.

Agreed. I barely even look for hardcovers there now. If you take a bookseller like Addyman, all their best stuff is online, even when it's in the shop on open sale.

Me in the backseat: "Are we there yet?" -:) Just kidding, lovely country side. Nice bookshops I'm jealous as we don't have many secondhand sf (English) bookshops here in the Netherlands. So I order mainly now online in UK and US.And as I write this, the post just delivered Eater by Gregory Benford sold by World of Books UK.

Yes, it was a bit of a long trip! But it does reflect that it's a bit of a journey for me. I think we all buy a lot online now - be careful with World of books though, their grading can be inconsistent I've found!

Thursday in Hay is always busy because of The Market.
Businesses close because people have to make a living regardless of what they sell. Market forces dictate

Yeah, I think I said in this video or another Hay one that it was obviously because of the market.

Nice to see you enjoying Hay (my local town). There are still bargains to be found if you search hard enough and I'm looking forward to seeing what you bought. Did you find the second section of science fiction in the Cinema Bookshop? For some reason they have split the SF section in two, with the other one at the opposite side of the upstairs room with a whole room full of SF magazines next to it. This is where I usually pick up my best deals. If you come to Hay again I would love to meet for a coffee. I always love chatting about books.

Yep! Thanks Alan. It was a quick visit, fun as always despite my concern about Hay's future.

Hi Steve. Which book shops in Hay are best for selling/trading books? Some of the dealers in Hay I wouldn't even approach. Do you find that the book shops are more open to larger collections than a few books here and there? Thanks, Scott.

What secondhand sellers are looking for is saleability, so quality of titles and condition is key. I sell at Cinema and Addyman's. Would advise contacting any dealer first with a list of what you have and /or better still pictures, so they can see if they're interested.

@@ScottManton -If you have a kindle, Amazon fdo a kindle ebook. The book itself is uncommon in the UK (watch out for German editions, these seem common but of course the text is German), more so in the USA but not cheap. But it's worth it!
