Tocchet's way is the Warriors' way, which eventually wins Stanley Cups. No softening up the team for Primadonnas! Warriors rise up to challenge and adversity, whereas Primadonnas look for excuses. Look at the play and effort of Hughes, Garland, and Sherwood who make nowhere near the money of Petterson! I still suggest they try a line with Petterson, Garland, and Sherwood- if Petterson can't get motivated playing with two motors like this then I suggest Petterson is too risky for the Canucks' franchise to commit the next 8 years to him at 11.6 million per season.
I really think things are gonna turn around for him soon. The boys seem very supportive of him, and even quinn hughes says he deserved that goal. Things like this will keep him playing the right way, and when he gets his confidence back, we will see shades of his old self.
@@danielpatterson5189 You're familiar with an old veteran who's a pretty good goal scorer, I'm sure, guy goes by the name of Alexander Ovechkin. Rumor has it he may break a Greatzky goal record late this season or start of next. Back in 2023, we could not be so sure of that, as he'd stopped scoring mid 2022-2023 season, around the time the season entered the 2023 calendar year. he got stuck at around 40 goals for the longest time, and the following season, he spent the first half on a 16 goal pace, this from a guy touted as the best goal scorer since Wayne Gretzky. Then, when the calendar flipped to 2024, he started to come alive and light it up enough to double his projected goals with just over 30, and that pace has held through to this season, with him projecting a 40 goal season or more. In other words, if a slump like this can happen the best goal scorer in NHL history, it can happen to Pettersson who's not in THAT league, and if an aging and washed up Ovechkin can bounce back, a Pettersson who's not even reached his best yet surely can. It may take him a bit of time to overcome his obstacles, whether it's learning a new way to play around a bad knee, or rediscovering how he used to play before the knee went bad and since healed, or get his confidence back, or just get a little luck by being in the right places for a good bounce to happen, he's talented and will eventually find a way to get fired up again and start lighting teams up like we're used to. He played a really good game vs the Ducks and could easily have had a hattrick, except he got robbed blind by a top goalie doing what top goalies do -- making great saves off great players.
well, its gonna be a progression thing. can't just yell at him to play at a 11.6 mil level for him to do so. We alr paid the 11.6, as fans either we hope he plays to the level, or hope we can trade him for a piece that makes us real contenders (don't think its possible now)
and Suter can be a 2.5 line guy, slotting in if Joshua does not pan out as a centre, or needs some bottom 6 time to get back in shape. Though I also like Garland-Pettersson-Suter/Joshua as a 2nd top 6 combo, forming a line 1a and line 1b situation. Either of those gives Pettey a good sniper, a good playmaker, and a good power foreword to clear some space for him to dangle.
Petey plays on the top PP with all those guys and Hughes and he still sucks. Again, it's not his linemates, it's him. He's suppose to drive any line he's on.
I still think all of this is a re-alignment of Petey to his new play style. Growing pains. I see this like Kopitar or other pure scorers who have rounded out their games to help their teams win.
I think this is what pretty much how Tocchet wants Petey to play. He always spoke about landmark this stifles his creativity because he doesn’t follow usual play. If you noticed most of their goals now are kind of the same. Predictable but it also works for the likes of Garland playing style. It makes more sense for Petey to adapt than for Garland to change his game to suit Petey’s.
I agree to an extent. The thing is, for whatever reason his shot is still not where it was at the last All-Star game and that has nothing to do with systems. Petey won the hardest shot in the league contest and has barely used it since. I think there is something physical going on still.
Lets rehire Bruce as Assistant coach who will just focus on Petey, I but honestly I believe that if you would give one good playmaking wing player, it would wake him up. That why I was really pushing for Marty Nečas, but look at him now, his trade stock is at all time high so I guess he is out of the question for atleast next 2 years
they've tried every forward on the team. they signed an offensive forward just for him. what he needs is to man up, be a professional, and play like the highest paid player on the team.
I'd say for Pettey, the ideal line would be one good playmaker to feed him or a good sniper for him to feed, and a good forechecker. When they're back to healthy, the Life Line duo would give him that, as Garland's both a good playmaker and can snipe a good 20-30 goals, and Jushua can hit, bang around the front of the net, pass and shoot well, and has soft hands for a big guy, and could give Pettey that power forward winger he needs on the other side to get the puck loose for him and create space. And Joshua's even fast for a guy his size, which is another bonus to such a line. Just gotta wait until Dakota's healthy enough to go on a top 6 grouping, and have Suter or similar guys fill the spot in the meanwhile.
It all started 11 months ago with Petey having a 3 point game and Tocchet criticising his playing style. Pretty clear that Petey and Tocchet is not a fit and with this much water under the bridge one starts to ask whether Petey will ever be able to get back to being himself under Tocchet. You made a very valid point - good for You and well taken.
I think he'll definitely be a lot more complete by the end of the season. He's been getting better every game, and it looks like Tocchet's trying to make him more of a two-way guy which wasn't his style. Either Tocchet relents and Petey starts putting up numbers again or Petey rounds out his game and doesn't put up as many points but he's a lot more defensively responsible.
surrounding him with talented line mates? been there. done that. with EVERYBODY on the roster. if he can only succeed with elite players then he isn't elite. jake guentzel is elite. it doesn't matter who you put him with or what city he's in, he is lights out and he's making a lot less than 11.6.
Yup, people still doesn't understand this. Elite players can play with anyone and make them better. Elite players doesn't need good wingers or linemates to help them.
I do remember that slump, Boesser was going though something in his personal life at the time, and I won't poke my nose into that, just that it affected his play, but I will also point out Boesser did develop a new dimention to his game during that so called "slump" as he started learning how to pass and got a lot of assists, which we never used to see from him as he used to be a straight sniper, and got more goals then assists. He became a more complete player on the other side of that transition.
Petey just needs time to work through this period. Trading him right now would be the biggest mistake ever. The moment he’s traded, he’ll start putting up 2 and 3 point nights all day long. There are doubts about his supposed tendinitis but me personally, I think it’s purely mental
There are different teaching styles and different working learning styles. Respect should be garnered for these for productive results. It’s not an easy binary path. So what happens to make it happen? You replace the participants to match. Then you look good.
I don't want to be the type of person to speculate on anyone's personal lives, but Petey's body language is similar to when Brock was going through some really tough times with his late father's health. Although it was much more openly reported on by sports media on Brock's situation, I'm wondering if there are some tough personal things going on with Pettersson's life that is affecting his on-ice performance. I never wish that upon another person, but it makes you wonder if there's more than meets the eye.
I don’t think you need to reunite the lotto line. However why can’t you put Petey and Boeser back together? Before Miller got there, Petey and Brock were the duo. They have insane chemistry, why not just try it?!
The 'Tocchet style doesn't suit Petey's game' theory doesn't really make sense as Petey was amazing during the first half of the season last year (under Toch)
Someone has to give him that speach from goon. The my finger light needs your finger light and the both of our finger lights we can phone home together. Or something like that.
11.6m - you have to be a leader and you have to be able to play with any linemates. You have to bring other players up with you. Dude falls down all the time and 2nd thinks when he shoots and passes. All his one on one’s lead to nothing. What a waste of money since the last all star break.
