Man carbery is such a good coach. He saw that the first line needed a change after the devils game and without delay he changed it immediately. Putting a guy like protas who’s relatively unproven but has a unique skill set to play on the top line is risky but it has worked perfectly.
From what I’ve seen, Protas has been really good at winning those 1v1 battles in the wall in the ozone. Something that is key when Strome is usually the set up man & Ovi is the trigger guy. However, consistency will be important for Protas. WSH likes to also interchange him and Mangiapane, who has a different skill set, but like shown in the video, can be extremely effective on the forecheck with his intelligence.
@@hockeypsychology A lot of the credit for the caps being good this year comes from Carbery helping Protas and McMichael break out and Dylan Strome becoming a true 1C which I don't think is talked about enough, combine that with Ryan Leonard coming in the springtime, a revamped D-Core with Great analytical defensemen in Chychrun, Sandin, Roy, and Fehervary, a decent tandem and thats a large part of the success happening here with the Caps.
People forget that even though he's now slow in his feet and hands, his offensive instinct is extremely high and his decisions with the puck are all solid. Rarely do his mistakes come from those
Fantastic video. Ovi's spacing and awareness in the offensive zone are some of his most underrated attributes and why he's managed to remain as lethal a goal scorer as he is into his old age.
He’s been a machine so far this year. The caps all around have been solid. Hopefully they give him another shot. Love the content bro keep it up. Makes my day when you post

Really love your videos and your explanations on the plays has been very informative, and you’ve helped me understand the game a whole lot more. Thank you! Keep up the good work
I cant wait to witness Ovi break the record. I never thought id see this happen in my lifetime. I will gather the children around the tv to watch, it will be a spectacle
After seeing how great he has been this season I can totally understand how that would have created the poor starting performance last season compared to this season and have renewed hope that he will pass Gretzky and hopefully even do it this season. Before the start of this season I was not convinced he could do it after how bad last season began for him. The chase is on! I can’t wait to see him do what no one else has ever done and create the 900 club!!!
He didn't pass away in the offseason. He actually passed away near the end of the previous season. Ovi missed IIRC about 6 games and barely scored after that in that season. It could've been partially his dad but he was carrying a nagging injury that he was able to rest during the all star break.
@@XaviRonaldo0 yes but the grieving process went into the first half of last year. when you lose a parent like that who was always there in your biggest moments it takes a very long time to recover from it
Ovie is at the center of one of my all-time favorite hockey memories. I had just gotten out of the Army and my roommate, who actually happened to be from Michigan, took me to the Caps first pre-season game of that season. This was back in the bad days; where guys with much more heart than skill (like Pettinger) were considered a top-6 forward. So we're sitting there, my roommate Eric decked out in Wings stuff, and we end up getting in a conversation with the folks sitting around us (a mix from both teams) about the upcoming year. It was generally considered it would be lucky if the Caps ended up being a .500 team. And then the teams come out on the ice and we're picking out players we know and someone asked "hey, who's that big, goofy looking kid on the Caps?" and another Caps fan responded ..... "oh, that's the new Russian kid ... I hope he turns out ok." And he rest has been history for me.
And he has scored the game winner tonight in Washington to beat the Preds. Insane. dude might just get 50 and set the record for most 50 geno seasons lol
Thank you for this! I'll also add that he will be the sole record holder for most 50 goals (10) seasons if he maintains this pace, and he will tie Gretzky in about the same amount of games played. Also, a couple of records Ovi will likely take in these next two seasons is the most game winning goals (8 more) and the most hits (367 more).
@@xlr0gd205 This likely Martin's last season. And Ovi will likely sign a two year extension after next season to score 1000 goals. Ovi is also hitting more per game and has twice the amount of TOI.
@@WilliamTheHeretic next year is probably Ovis last year. he said he wants to play at least a season in Russia before he ends his career so hes likely to go home after his contract expires rather than sign a new extension.
Ovi breaking the record at age 39 is even more proof he’s the greatest goal scorer ever in my eyes. I get Matthews is on pace to pass him but I think ovi longevity alongside Crosby makes him one of the greatest ever
Ovi spent extra time earlier in the season in the film room with Protas and Strome, teaching them how best to set him up and working on just general chemistry. Strome has assisted in all 10 of Ovi's goals this year. The extra work appears to be paying off. The line has combined for 19 goals and 34 assists. Really clicking right now.
@@MaxSoininen As someone who watched Kopitar career I see so much of his game in Barkov. I hope Barkov can break the stigma of the 200ft center who plays in a smaller market not getting the attention he deserves
I think that Fleury getting 20 games played this season to pass Luongo for 2nd most games played all time as a goalie is one of the biggest milestones to watch for this season. It could be a long time until we see another goalie play in 1000 games for his career.
Not only comparing to same-age Gretz but in today's much faster league, somehow an older Ovi is able to make it happen! Would love to see him notch almost 50 this season. These adjustments have been great, same as Sid The Kid needed to achieve longevity too - credit to both for being able to headline a faster, stronger league at an age when most stars are more than ready to bow out!
Finding myself tuning into Caps games this year because the whole team looks reinvigorated to win and getting to watch The Great 8 score one tee's from his office 20 years into his career is something special.
well there is also stamkos, malkin, kane, kucherov, kopitar, hedman, doughty, tavares, benn, seguin, panarin, giroux, perry and marchand still around. Ofc those guys aren't like those 2 but they are in the same generation
This has always been my thing w Ovi, he gets dogged as just a one timer merchant or selfish but he really isnt. Yeah he’s got more goals than assists but 700 assists is nothing to sneeze at. His best coaches over the years have always used his scoring threat ability to set up plays as well bc he can draw defenders well
A lot of people who were counting him out after last years start, never mention that his dad had passed shortly before the season, which evidently had a major impact on his play.
Lots of factors also suppressed his scoring first half of the season...new coaching staff, new initial system that didn't fit the roster and failed, trying to find a new stick after CCM discontinued his, Kuznetsov being a black hole on his line, having something like 4 goals called back because of off-side violations...after he took his family on vacation during the All-Star Break, he came back and found his switch. Dude definitely needed a mental reset.
Would love to see a video on this year’s bruins. They’ve been wildly bouncing from looking good to being bottom of the barrel bad. For a team who’s core is still there and has been so dominant these past couple years to fall apart like they have has been really frustrating but also interesting.
I haven't gotten to watch much this season but from what I've seen Ovi has stopped trying to force his way into the zone with speed and skill like he used to. He's realised he needs to rely on the young guys to do this for him and he finally has a supporting cast that can do it. Now he can just concentrate on either keeping the play going with simple passes, killer passes when they're available and either getting into scoring positions to receive the puck. This team is a well oiled machine right now.
Credit to the coach to set up an old Ovi like this but I am not sure if the Caps and especially Ovi can keep up the FLA Panthers style of play. This will be very interesting to watch this season.
This may be blasphemous to some people, but i genuinely consider Ovi to best goal scorer in league history, period. Even if he doesn’t break Wayne’s record, I don’t think that matters. Literally 75% of Gretzky 894 goals game in the 80’s, the first 10 years of his career. He scored nearly 700 goals in the first half of his career, and barely 200 the second half. Why does that matter? The absurd change in goalie play style and pad size from the 80’s through the 90’s is WILD. And while yes the 90’s is the latter half of his career, the sheer drop off in his production as goalies got better and were allowed bigger pads is entirely fair to point out. I absolutely do not say this to discredit how bananas it is that Gretzky put up the numbers he did in the 80’s. He is the GOAT and he revolutionized the game. Period. I’m just saying that Ovi has been putting up his numbers in a league that is significantly harder to put up those types of numbers in. And no, I’m not a caps fan lol Avs all the way baby 💙❤️
I've been watching the NHL since 1992. I was a teenager and I didn't understand why Gretzky was so Great?I've seen the last 8 seasons and he's only scored 130 points once. But Mario Lemieux scored 160 twice and scored 70 goals twice before my eyes.Mogilny and Selyanne scored 75 each.Lafontaine scored about 150 points.Yzerman scored about 60 .Hull scored 60.Bure came from the former USSR and scored 60 goals twice in a row.And I could not understand in any way that Gretzky was a GREAT for the first 11 seasons and I see the last 8 seasons and for me he was not a best.Mario Lemieux is my number 1.
You do have a good argument, but I think Wayne and Ovi are slightly different players. Wayne always was a threat for assists. Ovi scores first and do everything else later. All around, Wayne might still defeat him, but for goals I agree with you. I think even Wayne does to some extent based on stuff he said.
As a Pens fan, I just want to see him get it. Like 2 old war vets, watching the previous generation’s best of Sid and Ovi ride off into the sunset would cap off the time spent together beautifully
The recurring theme here is that Strome-Protas are so dangerous in their own right that teams start to lose track of Ovi. Completely different than last season start, and only evolved towards the end with Strome-Wilson. Even more extreme now with Carlson-Chych on D1 and TvR shooting almost every possession in-zone
I feel like it'll happen next season, though also wouldn't be surprised if he flew past 900 this year. Will be awesome to find out! Loving the Caps' turnaround so far this year!
Growing up in the DMV in the 2000s and 2010s Ovi is my childhood man, only relic left of those times in DC sports. No more Wall, Beal, Zimmerman, Strasburg (effectively). Really happy to see Ovi firing on all cylinders again
He's the greatest goal scorer of all time, and he's borderline top 10 all time. But Gretzky, Lemiuex, and Orr are on a tier of their own above a whole bunch of guys on the tier below (guys like Howe, Jagr, Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, Bossy, Richard, Lidstrom, etc.)
"Like a shark waiting to attack" is probably the best way to describe Ovi when he's on the ice. You can definitely tell the difference in his game now from 10 years ago. He's shifted from being more of a mako shark into a bull shark laying in wait to strike out. I will also say, since we're on a Hockey Psychology channel here, one thing I've noticed in his chase to 894 is that he always seems to ramp it up when he's closer to another goal record. When there's a stretch of 35 or more goals between the player he's most recently passed and the next on the list, he usually slowed down a good chunk. But once he's within that 30 or so goal range of over taking the next guy, he ramps up the goal production. Might be something to that in his mind that we just don't and won't see
Yeah, puck luck is a huge factor in hockey. Teams can do everything right, for months, and if the puck luck doesn't go their way, then they're a losing team. Only way to get over variation is sample size.
@davidlinehat4657 That last sentence of your post is so true. That's exactly why I knew it was a statistical anomaly. You could look at his career SH%, which has a massive sample, and tell that even with regression.. there was more going on. He was shooting at like 4.5%. I figured that eventually, the bell curve would normalize and he'd be closer to his career mean.. which is exactly what happened.
I've heard some people say that McDavid will fall off when he gets older because his game relies so much on speed. I just know though, with generational talents like Crosby and Ovi, McDavid will find a way to adjust his game and still be an elite player even when he's older.

Man carbery is such a good coach. He saw that the first line needed a change after the devils game and without delay he changed it immediately. Putting a guy like protas who’s relatively unproven but has a unique skill set to play on the top line is risky but it has worked perfectly.
Protas really improved his skating in the offseason. Paying off immensely
@@XaviRonaldo0 Every time I've gone to one of the Caps practices the past 2 years Protas is always the first and last guy on the ice. He's a horse
Agreed. Even more ballsy because Protas looked awful that first game.
Rarely do his mistakes come from those
Also so strong on the puck. Jagr was scoring goals in his 40’s because he was almost impossible to separate from the puck. Ovie is similar.
he is that period of the career where he says: "the puck run, not me".
But he still an assassin in scoring position.
My friends clowned me for picking him in fantasy lmao

Fantastic video. Ovi's spacing and awareness in the offensive zone are some of his most underrated attributes and why he's managed to remain as lethal a goal scorer as he is into his old age.
He’s been a machine so far this year. The caps all around have been solid. Hopefully they give him another shot. Love the content bro keep it up. Makes my day when you post
Thanks for watching!
Ovie is in my fantasy pool and was 1 of the 4 keepers I picked. I shall keep him until he retires. I have had him for 5 years now and he has always helped me in doing well. He is also one of my favourite players. I have always enjoyed watching him play.
This is quite possibly the best hockey site on the internet. Love the analysis.
I read one of the reasons for Ovechkin slow start last season is his father passed away in the off-season, which must’ve really affected his gameplay
@@XaviRonaldo0 both of those could’ve been factors together
@@XaviRonaldo0 yes but the grieving process went into the first half of last year. when you lose a parent like that who was always there in your biggest moments it takes a very long time to recover from it
@ethanparker7900 I know. I was speculating that his heart wasn't in it anymore after his dad passed but he was dealing with an injury too
Ovie is at the center of one of my all-time favorite hockey memories.
He already has that record
@ the fuck he does. Hes tied with ofher people. Thats not his record.
@@thegoughandbordenfamily8234He can beat his own record!
Most hits is doubtful since Matt Martin is back (he's 2nd all time) with the Isles and he might snatch it instead
@@unrelatedcoma My feeling is he'll stay on if the team becomes a legit contender for another cup. Jagr is 52 and still playing Czech ExtraLiga
He's close to the most goaltenders scored on too if I'm not mistaken
Ovi breaking the record at age 39 is even more proof he’s the greatest goal scorer ever in my eyes. I get Matthews is on pace to pass him but I think ovi longevity alongside Crosby makes him one of the greatest ever
I just don't see Matthews passing him with his wrist issues.
Matthews has what? 4 goals this season so far?
@@butcherpete2286 yah he'll prolly end with 750-800 but def not north of 800 lol
Played with Alexi Protas when i was 14-15. Super smart player, great combo with Ovi.
He is the great!!! Health to Him!!!
Really nice breakdown
Ovi is the best player of the post 05 lockout era
Please do a Kopitar video! He just got 800 assists and broke the Kings all time GWG record! Would be so cool to see
Kopitar is so underrated now a days! /Florida fan.
Hawks fan coming to repeat the underrated comment. I’m a big Kopitar fan, love his game.
@@MaxSoininen As someone who watched Kopitar career I see so much of his game in Barkov. I hope Barkov can break the stigma of the 200ft center who plays in a smaller market not getting the attention he deserves
Man, I’d love it if he broke the record and secured a Cup this year. From a Devils fan.
Love him or hate him, Ovechkin is one of the very best NHL skaters, ever. He’s arguably #1. He’s definitely top five.
Before the season start, I checked on some interesting milestones for 2024-2025 NHL season;
+ Sidney Crosby - 600 goals milestone / 1600 points milestone
+ Evgeni Malkin - 500 goals milestone / 800 assists milestone / 1300 points milestone
+ Alexander Ovetchkin - 700 assists milestone / 1600 points milestone (currently -50 points) [Note: 42 goals to win Wayne Gretzky's ATG record]
+ Connor McDavid - 1000 points milestone
+ Marc-Andre Fleury - defeating Roberto Luongo in shut-outs ATG record. 2 to tie and 3 to beat (78+ SHO)
+ Jonathan Quick & Sergey Bobrovsky - 400 wins milestone
It's crazy McDavid is already approaching 1000 points.
I think that Fleury getting 20 games played this season to pass Luongo for 2nd most games played all time as a goalie is one of the biggest milestones to watch for this season. It could be a long time until we see another goalie play in 1000 games for his career.
Is Jean Marc a jab at something.
Is he not Marc Andre?

Not only comparing to same-age Gretz but in today's much faster league, somehow an older Ovi is able to make it happen! Would love to see him notch almost 50 this season.
These adjustments have been great, same as Sid The Kid needed to achieve longevity too - credit to both for being able to headline a faster, stronger league at an age when most stars are more than ready to bow out!
man, if he scores 50 this season and/or fight for the Rocket Richard Trophy, his waiting period for the Hockey Hall of Fame should be waived off
Finding myself tuning into Caps games this year because the whole team looks reinvigorated to win and getting to watch The Great 8 score one tee's from his office 20 years into his career is something special.
everywhere really not just the office homie
Ovi and Crosby are the last 2 stars from a generation and a style of hockey that sadly we will never see again.
well there is also stamkos, malkin, kane, kucherov, kopitar, hedman, doughty, tavares, benn, seguin, panarin, giroux, perry and marchand still around. Ofc those guys aren't like those 2 but they are in the same generation
They pale in comparison to Gretzky, Lemieux.
I love ovi been my favorite for over a decade
This has always been my thing w Ovi, he gets dogged as just a one timer merchant or selfish but he really isnt. Yeah he’s got more goals than assists but 700 assists is nothing to sneeze at. His best coaches over the years have always used his scoring threat ability to set up plays as well bc he can draw defenders well
A lot of people who were counting him out after last years start, never mention that his dad had passed shortly before the season, which evidently had a major impact on his play.
and also Backstrom essentially retiring as his hip gave out, Lost his best friend on the ice and His Father off of it.
"on the edge of greatness"? he's already great, he's the Great 8.
love the caps/ovi content
I've never seen Ovi's game broken down like this. I appreciate what you're doing.
Would love to see a video on this year’s bruins. They’ve been wildly bouncing from looking good to being bottom of the barrel bad.
For a team who’s core is still there and has been so dominant these past couple years to fall apart like they have has been really frustrating but also interesting.
I really like how you break down the game. You really understand the game.
By far the best Hockey analysis channel on UA-cam
I love big gretz but it's great for the game to see the growth
We get ovechkin edging greatness before we got GTA 6
been doing it for 20 years and they still can’t stop him gr8 🐐
Ovi is a master on knowing where to be on the ice. He makes it look so effortless. He has the highest hockey IQ of all time! I'm rooting for him.
@@IgsorZar So you missed the first 13 years of his career and don't know why he's so great?
The production drop had a lot more to do with Suter almost breaking his back at 29 than the goalie change...
@@IgsorZar now look at the assist numbers to see the truly unbreakable records...
You do have a good argument, but I think Wayne and Ovi are slightly different players. Wayne always was a threat for assists. Ovi scores first and do everything else later.
All around, Wayne might still defeat him, but for goals I agree with you. I think even Wayne does to some extent based on stuff he said.
it's the durabilty. Ovi might be one of the most durable hockey players in history.
I like your videos and the way you break things down. Great channel, great content!
Coming a Flyers fan... Ovi is the goat. Also your videos are awesome. just discovered the channel.
Not even close
He's the greatest goal scorer of all time, and he's borderline top 10 all time. But Gretzky, Lemiuex, and Orr are on a tier of their own above a whole bunch of guys on the tier below (guys like Howe, Jagr, Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, Bossy, Richard, Lidstrom, etc.)
Ovi is like the big old alpha waiting for the chance to strike
Awesome that this video is only 6 hours old, yet already outdated with the numbers xD scored again tonight.
I hope ovi gets it. He more than deserves the record.
I usually get bored with hockey analysis but you are pretty good at making it interesting
First time here, great video and narration!!
Might be something to that in his mind that we just don't and won't see
I called it last year. His shooting % was insanely low for him in the 1st half of last season. It was an anomaly. He was getting bad puck luck.
I genuinely forgot Ovechkin was still playing lmao
I still remember as a kid watching his highlights and thinking that he was a marvel of himan ability
i hope that he can beat the record this season. it will overall be very good for hockey as a sport in general when these records get beaten.
I've heard some people say that McDavid will fall off when he gets older because his game relies so much on speed. I just know though, with generational talents like Crosby and Ovi, McDavid will find a way to adjust his game and still be an elite player even when he's older.
Mcdavid wont finish his career with more goals than Matthews let alone Ovi

Okay, I’m an Edmonton girl, born and raised. I was in the hospital for a month and a half when I was born and the first place I went to after the hospital was an ice rink to watch my brother practice, not home but to a rink lol. Grew up on Gretz, his statue stands in my home town. My mother in law was a server to the oilers in the early 90’s and said Moose (Messier) and team were great patrons and even better tippers. Spent my whole childhood watching my brother and grandpa go nuts over the oilers in the late 80’s and 90’s…buuuut still hope #8 breaks the record. When he was a kid, his parents took him to a toy store and all he wanted was a little toy stick, and then his brother died in a car crash (he was his hockey idol) and Ovi vowed to play the game for him, such a bittersweet tale.
