To address some of the comments: “I have... double standards”
    ua-cam.com/users/shortssqmGHJPJOR8?feature=share
Again- this is to explore different perspectives on the group as a commercial LABEL and CONCEPT of YG, not on the girls. No right answer, do you think blackpink is overrated?

you mentioning Rosie's weight loss as unnatural, made me remember, those particular days, Rosé was pissed as fuck in a live, when she was constantly facing body shaming comments like " Eat more, why are you so skinny?
She mentioned how she's facing problems at gaining weight, and most importantly " not all bodies are same, I'm trying to gain weight, it's way more difficult for me". Speculation over their bodies is not great, lisa also addressed in a recent video, on bpm that she loses weight immensely on touring, and is still trying to gain weight. Weight has been a sensitive matter for blackpink, 2 members are bashed for being skinny, 2 are for being fat. Something they've struggled with is being used as means to speculate over them possibly starving themselves over standards just hurts.

I think they are definitely overrated, but talented young women nonetheless. Also (I could be wrong), I think the line "born skinny b*tch" refers to Lisa being consistently skinny-shamed and embracing it rather than letting the haters get the better of her.

This line is not the toxic one in the whole song. I also said that it must be a song for haters when listening to this part but then when the song continued and they started singing how they are prettier than other girls who dress like them- that's the toxic, misgonetic part of the song. After the song was released the many fans used it to attack other female idols or use it as empowerment when it's so far away from that. What's empowering about tearing ppl down so that you can seem above them?

@@MM-by3vi they actually didn't say they were prettier than other girls that wore the same thing. They didn't mention girls at all. Get correct sources. Blackpink may as well be referring to the many male idols that were spotted in the same outfits as them because I can name a couple that were. Eg: Jennie's white Chanel sweater, multiple celine outfits that Lisa has worn were worn shortly after by male idols (eg: that white red and blue cardigan, the brown bomber jacket, the green bomber jacket)

Holy shit, they literally talked about people copying them, didn't use a single pronoun. But yall call it misogynistic. Ass head, no pronoun was used, that song also explicitly called the men jennie is rumored to be with as fuck boys. So now the song is misandyrist because it talks about badly about some men. Pretty savage was never used tho hate on other idols, lies once again.

The conversation around Type Girl and it’s being a “pick me” song will never not make me question somebody comprehension skills. How do y’all hear lyrics like “I bring money to the table not your dinner” “ type to make you love me when the only thing you’ve done is like” and think “this is a pick me song 🧐” that’s literally not what they’re saying AT ALL. They’re basically saying that they know their worth in a relationship and they’re confident woman, hence the “you can check my stats, got everybody eye and I run them laps around everybody minds”. It’s also just weird how y’all are making it seem like somebody being confident in themselves is a bad quality to have, when it a great thing to have in a significant other. I feel like a lot of you have never been in a relationship and that’s why you can’t understand the viewpoint of this song.

Every day there are numerous uploads of people hating on them veiled under the guise of “criticism”… if we are gonna discuss this topic, it should be about ALL GIRL GROUPS and how the k-pop industry is set up as a disservice to women. The way misogyny is seemingly okay when it comes to them is crazy. Then to ask if “they are overrated” just goes to show your intentions were not from a genuine place. I am so over you people. It’s okay to dislike blackpink but to say that the sexualization over the nurse scene is her (jen) and the stylist fault is insane to me, considering she only wore it for a damn scene, not even for dance or film more scenes with it, like that’s all. Also, I didn’t knew that shake my ass in a performance was a sort of bad thing or that I was contributing to the male gaze.. which is actually crazy to think about as, dance is a form of expression which not necessarily mean u want male validation or male attention… like this opinion is just kinda weird and misogynistic cause they’re just girls dancing I mean… I don’t think they’re even trying to attract the male public with their choreos. if u think they’re overrated that’s fine but I think that if u are gonna make a video abt women and systemic issues cause u are mentioning them, u should a do it from a neutral POV or at least do more research abt the topic and the gender issues specifically in kpop. Or at least consider other perspectives from women that gets positive energy and strength from blackpink music to continue their studies, their dreams, or just to have a good moment etc. For me this is more like a hate video that shows your ignorance and bias pov cause the original title was “blackpink is overrated” and you’re not a kpop gossip channel I think…….

Never have i seen someone sexualize BP the way non fans do. And it’s not just sexualizing, it’s sexual harassment. they’re accused of sleeping around for their views and streams, that they “please” their male audiences. Which is very minute btw, since ggs with girl crush concepts have predominantly female fans and blackpink is not an exception. Their choreography, looks, and other things being sexualized like how they are in this video. “The male gaze” like ew… If anything this goes beyond just not liking their music, it’s violent sexual harassment and misogyny if you point things out like that. It’s incessant and just exhausting and as a woman, hurts me a little every time I see something like that. I hope those women don’t see how they’re being talked about like this, it must be debilitating for their mental state.

I loved the video, but I hardly disagree with the part where they automatically dress for the male gaze just because of short skirts, fishnet thights etc. Why can we not dress sexy for ourselves? It gives off the whole they're asking for it vibe. I agree with the dance moves being provocative however I think that many idols and singers in general do this. Not just kpop idols, it's just not as commonly seen in the kpop space as in western media. While I'm a blink I do think that the biggest problem blackpink has in that people as a whole just see black and white with them. We spend so much time putting idols/ famous people on a pedestal that we forget about the grey area of things. I also believe yg makes things worse for them by not speaking up. I would love to see a video about idols that are actually change the industry like Yunjin or Soyeon.

Everytime that any of the blackpink girls wear something revealing they are slutshamed to the high heavens, I fail to understand how this is acceptable. The girls wear what they want for themselves, they dance on stage for themselves and no one else. This video feels like such a "what girls should or shouldn't be" video. I think that they began to feel unfulfilled by their job as idols at some point and it is the main reason that the group feels lackluster as a whole nowadays (thus the downfall of their live performances and increase in their solo activities) and not the marketing strategies of YG which is pretty common. It seems to me as if they have no interest in being idols anymore and YG is just trying to milk the success of their fame till the last drop. Imo, in their first years they deserved all the titles and praises they were given but nowadays it's sad to see that the passion they had when they were rookies has been fading. I just miss THE blackpink tbh now it just feels like they don't really care about their music career and giving their bare minimum cuz they know that the loyal delusional obsessive fans will eat it up like its their best.

2:22 using a before/after of Rosé and a clip of Jennie saying that she's hungry without context while saying "at the expense of their health" is diagnosing them with carreer-induced eating disorders or forced dieting which, quite frankly, is strange coming from you, knowing how you keep pointing out that one shouldn't accuse you of these things just because you lost weight. Not you Zoe! You know, Rosé's small frame makes every little variation extremely noticeable, because every pound represents a higher percentage of her total weight than if she had started off with a body that's on the larger side. It's easy to lose and gain a couple of pounds just because of everyday life.
2:37 : that isn't plagiarizing, that is quoting, it's part of rap culture and it's meant to be obvious
We don't know what is going on behind the scenes and why the quality of their performances have been declining so much. But it's indeed reasonable to expect top-tier stuff from acts that are so successful, especially coming from an industry that is all about excellence.

As a former Blackpink fan, I must say that is kinda sad that after 7 years in the industry and there is little to no improvement, they don't sound bad but with how many periods of hiatus they have I thought they would actually have been studying and improving their craft, Lisa even in yesterday's Coachella still can not sing the chorus of her song even if her life depends on it, Jennie is looking better but those high and lows of energy are concerning for her age I don't know if it's because of her health or she doesn't care anymore, Rose the potential of been great vocalist only if she could care on her voice more, and Jisoo I have to take my hat on her really, for someone when they debut was not on par with her members she improved a lot, but again just improved a lot ? or simply the other members are the same level they were when they debut... It was very underwhelming for me to accept the fact at some point I was more into them because I found them more attractive than the artistry or the music they put on and I hated that because they are not a piece of meat for me to lust over... Frustrating because they are TALENTED but they don't care about artistry or putting a message in the world that could make a difference, as "leaders" in culture, they could make so much positive impact but they choose to ride with the flow in how the company manages them, and being allies of the system they sing over and over so "against"

in terms of skills, i dont think they're overrated. going back as early as the first two square eras (square one & two), they're insanely talented performers and know how to carry a performance live, and the music from those eras definitely were a huge help in showcasing their skills and charisma. after how you like that was the start of how bp wasn't on their best IMO. pink venom and the born pink tour are the worst offenders of that (I swear, yg can do way better than that + good thing bp got their shit together as the tour goes on), and It really saddens me that yg isn't doing bp's talent justice + bp falling off a bit more in the start of the tour lately.
the only thing that's overrated is their released title tracks (i cant say the same for b-sides bc I'm not interested enough to try to listen). but skill? they're amazing. if they extend their contracts, i really hope yg can give them more room for creative input + let them make more music. please.

I definitely believe that Blackpink debuted with the vocals, rap power, and dancing ability that was expected of any third gen group. I also think that they have improved their abilities over time as would be expected of any group. I'm not sure that they are peak-level vocals or rap or dance that would garner such a massive title and views. I'm happy that Blackpink are helping to globalise K-pop and get more people into K-pop groups but I don't think they should be given the incredibly pressuring title of best girl group in the world. With the lack of control the girls have over the songwriting and even over basic decisions in their own life (how they're dressed, how much makeup they wear, what they eat, when they get to talk to and see their families, etc.) I think fans and ordinary viewers of the videos/listeners are putting a lot of pressure on them instead of the company. Part of the "are blackpink overated" debate is centred around their discography and how small it is compared to other groups. That, again, is out of their control. I think Blackpink are in the unfortunate position of being exploited for their visuals on the global stage and their music careers (that they've spent years training for) has been held over them like a hostage.

Alright lemme sum this up rq for yall
    1. I absolutely do not see this video as a offensive or hate video, it's simply somebody voicing and recognizing some pretty valid points, zoe has also numerous times said that this is more on YG and not on blackpink.
    2. I do agree that this video probably should've been more wide focusing where she spoke on the kpop industry in general, but she has already made a video like that and I'm assuming this one was just more of a focused video that studies one specific group. I would however agree that there are other groups that imo have more interesting subjects in term of things that should be noted and investigated on them, but it makes sense that blackpink was chosen especially considering their global griphold.
    3. DOUBLE STANDARDS R WILDDDD. the amount of ridicule and slut-shaming i've watched jennie receive for her twerking on stage is genuinely disgusting. y'all will scarf down any male kpop idol who grinds the floor but she can't... shake her ass? bffr y'all. A. she's a whole grown woman. B. it's literally her tour and C. ain't nobody got time for your 1800s ideals. I also think its wild how much society hates women who are comfortable in their bodies and how they express them. Like korea is perfectly chill w/ making their underage idols sing about cookies or making them wear hella short skirts but when an idol CHOOSES to do smth like that, then it's a problem because it's a woman who has control over her body instead of selling it to some bogus company.
    4. are they overrated? that's debatable imo. for me, i have loved them for years and they got me into kpop. i think that they've opened countless doors for other idols (regardless of whether or not they're "better", they still allowed groups to be able to reach fans all across the world). they are 100% a commercial project in certain areas bc lets be fr, everything is. Everything you love and everything and everybody you find to be "authentic" is truly a product at the end of the day. despite this, i still enjoy them as a group and i think that sometimes you just have to decide, "do i want to stress myself over the fact that literally everything is fake or do I simply want to enjoy this group for what it is?" it's your choice.
    5. they have so much wasted potential. i truly have always felt this and even more so after i discovered some of Rose's solo covers. she has such an amazing voice that is honestly kinda wasted. personally, i feel like most group (kpop or not) are going to have trouble including everyone. Which is why i've never been a huge fan of those hella big kpop groups, someone is always going to be forgotten (like let's be fr, if blackpink has trouble including people, imagine twice). but anyways i rlly hope when they disband that all the girls are able to follow successful solo careers, whether it's in acting, singing, dancing, etc. or even private lifestyles or behind-the-scenes work.
    6. Imma say it bc i can, some (aka the majority) of their fans are way to obsessed, referencing back to the halo effect that zoe mentioned, y'all mfs gotta chill. and im saying this as a blink, you have to realize these people are human. which means the following:
they do not owe you a damn thing
they are not perfect, which also means that you may disappointed by them and that's okay.
you absolutely should not entertain the idea of a parasocial relationship with people who have no idea who you are and no, it is not okay to stalk them.
they quite honestly can do anything and you literally do not have to stay their fan, just don't be obsessive and don't be an asshole :)
okay i think i summed it up. lmk if i should add smth ig?

While I actually agree with some of your points, I genuinely disagree with a few of them and would like some clarification on what u meant by them. I don't mean to totally shut down ur points or your point of view, i'd just like to open more discussion on this as u seem very well-spoken and knowledgeable.
Particularly, I don't understand what the male gaze section was supposed to be about? Yes Blackpink have some risqué moves here, lots of twerks, body rolls as u said and that can't be denied, but these kind of moves, especially with blackpink, are really... harmless? Let me explain before anyone gets the wrong idea
I TOTALLY agree that catering to the male gaze is RAMPANT in all entertainment industries and women are unfortunately exploited a lot and made to act in sexual manners, but in the case of Blackpink, it's not as if the girls were underage when they debuted and made to perform these risque moves, afaik they don't express any discomfort in performing these choreos unless they're in a tight, uncomfortable outfit(which i would say is a bigger issue), and combined with their powerful, confident image, it feels as though the girls themselves are confident in expressing their sexuality and sprinkling it in their performances(despite them constantly being SL*TSHAMED for them omfg)
Also, I don't like the take "oh the brand claims they're so "not-like-other-girls and empowering but they cater to the male gaze" when the examples u gave (sexy choreo and doing aegyo) aren't even that bad? Like just because blackpink does these things at all does not change the fact that they're overall empowering as a group that inspires confidence?
Furthermore, I feel as though adding the male gaze is kinda redundant as literally SO many groups have choreos that are sexual in a more problematic way than blackpink. For example, making MINORS do sexual body rolls, lifting up their shirts and doing hip thrusts.
And this applies to both ggs who conform to a male audience and bgs who conform to a female audience. In fact, I'd say most active boy groups have even less subtle sexual choreos than blackpink, and yet they are not NEARLY as criticized for it.
And I'm not saying that all idols should be shamed for having sexual choreo (unless an idol is minor or explicitly expresses discomfort in performing them, whether it be because of the audience or other reasons), every idol and performer for that matter should feel able to utilize sex appeal in their performance IF THEY WISH TO, because the truth is, sex sells,, and it DOESN'T have to be exploitative if the idol feels comfortabel with it and there's no ethics being broken or abused.
Again, Im so sorry if I misinterpreted what u were trying to say or if i got off track,, but I just wanted to get this off my chest and wanted to express my opinions. Feel free to correct me or reiterate your opinions, I'm genuinely open to discuss this and hear out other perspectives as, again, judging by ur channel u seem very well-spoken and with a lot to say.
(EDITED to re-word some of my points)

I don't necessarily like blackpink, I'm not a fan nor a hater but I feel like this video is reaching. I think the only fair arguments are that they haven't really been perfoming in their concerts, despite their tickets costing a fortune and that they can't really sing and their fans should wake up to that.
The pick me and male gaze argument? A bit of a reach if you ask me.
I don't think that any of them do anything specifically because of men? Maybe the way they are marketed sure, but it's pretty common in Korea still, and the feminism movement hasn't really reached them yet. It's like female kpop groups are giving the illusion of power, because that was sells well, but that's a whole problem within the kpop industry.

I discovered Blackpink last year and became a huge fan, to the point that I didn't hesitate to get tickets to their Mexico City concert (because they didn't play Miami, where I live now).
But I am very aware of the contradictions that you pointed out, the empowered feminist rhetoric vs. the over-sexualized image, the logo overload in all their outfits. Even the fact that they portray this image of woman in control when they have limited control over their music, lyrics, even outfits.
But then again, as a woman in her late 40s, I have had many a problematic fave, and can enjoy the music, the dances and their whole appeal while being aware of the contradictions around them. I'm not sure how that works for their much younger fandom. They are after all a product, and a very well marketed one.
I have also discovered this channel recently, and I have become a huge fan. This was a very nuanced approach and I agree with all of the "spicy" takes (well, except that I think Pink Venom is more of a tribute to old hip hop than a copy). The lengths they go to show them enjoying all sorts of meals is a little adorable.
So even with all of their issues, I love their whole thing, and I love watching them in action. I just hope they give a good concert in Mexico City.... and if they don't.. well, I'll still have some esquites... and there's always the Ghost concert in the fall.

Some are real song like inspired by a true story and some are made up story songs just like Typa Girl, Tally, The Happiest Girl, Pink Venom, Ready For Love. Shutdown is not a made up song

It's not real 💀💀 yeah this song is a pick me but is this song indicated to you? Nah, yallz name wasn't even mention that song. Bro it just said "girls" and y'all acting like your family, homies, friends, or others are offended. Like bro it's a pick me song yeah but is it harmful? No like seriously can't y'all just act and pass the vibe check to this song? It was really obvious that this song is only for the povs of pick me like blackpink being a pick me in different dimension. Like bro wtf is y'all on 💀😭

I wrote another comment before this. but I felt that my previous ex-toxic-kpop-stan self started speaking for me so I’m here again to rewrite the narrative:
After experiencing kpop from 2017 until now I can firmly say we as fans and people uphold idols and celebrities to an impossible standard. As you said the halo effect is the eventually downfall of many idols.
I’m so glad you’re speaking on this as I hope younger fans begin to realize that they should not literally idolize these performers but see them as they are: PERFORMERS.
We can love their beauty, talent, and art, but we should always look at their content either for entertainment or through a critical eye. Never for gospel because as you showed, BlackPink’s lyrics even contradict their self image and can put a negative impression on listeners.
I love BlackPink for all they’ve gone through, but the Kpop industry is dark and this global sensation is no exception.

I don't understand why this concept stuff is being critiqued so seriously, when it is obviously just as hollow and meaningless as everything else about K-Pop. K-Pop is just peak capitalism pretending to be culture. Not to say the songs aren't catchy and the videos fun to look at, but nothing carries any real meaning.

(G)-IDLE can better be described as breaking the standard, as they aren't afraid to show the fierce side of femininity, or experimenting with their concepts. BP is great, but even if they challenge some standards, it's not enough if they always go back to mass appeal without getting out of the comfort zone. HYLT, DDD and KTL were all sounding pretty similar with similar themes, and it's not bad to be thematically cohesive, but it gets repetitive at some point. (G)-IDLE doesn't shy away from experimenting, shame that their company is such a lame ass excuse of an organisation.

I agree too. I think BP kind of does girl crush as a marketing strategy while G-Idle and Mamamoo do some real female empowerment and are more creative than the one guy writing the music for BP. (Although I do like the one guy’s music.)
G-Idle’s marketing does suck. I had no idea they existed until Tomboy but oh my god did I fall hard the first time I saw that video. Immaculate. Perfect. 10/10 best music video.
