It's a sequel to a series based on a Jack Ketchum novel about a Feral family. The films are "Offspring", "The Woman", and this. Although technically you don't need to watch them as their origin is briefly explained in a flashback. It does fill in some gaps. Each film is helmed by a different director and has a different tone. But they all connect to one another. "Offspring" has the lowest budget lookwise.
As soon as you try to create a mood with a standard sound effect in a film, mostly with a mask and perspective, without drastically disrupting expectations and the element of surprise, you can see very clearly that experience in the film industry is slowly retiring.
I’d say the 1st one, Offspring, is the least deep of those 3 because it’s simply about survival, though yes it’s darker than Darlin’ I also think it’s the goriest, the 2nd one, The Woman, is the deepest of the 3 because of it’s message about how “not every monster lives in the wild”, that’s why it’s scarier than most horror movies because the “monster” is normal-looking person, the woman is a canibal savage and she is the best character there, this movie manages to be very disturbing in many different ways, but the ending is perfect, Darlin’ sort of explores similar issues as the ones in The Woman but in a lighter way.
