It was mentioned briefly in one of the movies but apparently jack sparrow was branded a pirate by the east india trading company when he freed a ship full of slaves. As punishment, they burnt his ship, which at the time was called the Wicked Wench. To aviod death and save his ship Jack made that deal with Davy Jones and the Wicked Wench became the black pearl. This would be the perfect movie. Why on earth did they do the fountain of youth when they could do a prequal showing Jack's backstory. That movie would be great.

+SugarVelvet Can you be more specific? I really don't remember much being said about Jack's backstory. Are there any deleted scenes or such? Because all I remember is the story about how he was betrayed by his crew and then escaped from the island with "sea turtles". And that was in the first movie.

      @krissuyx 9 років тому +24

+Panthera Only the logo of East India Trading Company burnt on Jack's arm is shown at some point. The rest of that backstory was told elsewhere. I believe there's a book called "The Price of Freedom", which tells the full extent of that origin story.

+melo13melo As +Kristjan Kangro mentioned I think that was in a book, not hinted in the 2nd or 3rd sequel. I pretty much understand most of the PotC story, movie perspective that is, but i don't remember hearing that at all.

+Panthera In the scene where the East India Company guy (they can't possibly expect me to remember everyone's name) takes Jack on board his ship to convince him to rat out the other pirates, they cut some dialogue. EIC guy says that Jack still owes him because he had hired Jack years ago do deliver a shipment of cargo to Jamaica, and Jack "liberated the shipment." Jack replies, nonchalantly, "People aren't cargo."
Why the hell did they cut that? It was too dark? They hanged a kid at the beginning! It's one line and it gives this incredible new dimension to Jack's character. All his drunken rambling about freedom actually means something now! But no, we need cut that and add scenes Jack talks to an entire ship of Jacks!

+Jack Stevenson Yeah. "Curse of the Black Pearl" was a big game-changer for me. It's the only movie where I saw it once in the afternoon with just my brother, and then told my Dad when he got home from work "this-movie-is-so-awesome-we-have-to-go-see-it-again-tonight!!!" And it was still amazing the second time. Just amazing fun. It was inspired for me. Though I am willing to admit that I may have the nostalgia working overtime for these movies. For all its flaws (I agree with 90% of what Doug said), I still enjoy all the films. Definitely imperfect, but I have so much fun. \(^v^)/

What people seems to forget is that Jack Sparrow was never the center of the story. Elisabeth and Will was.
The problem with the 4 and 5 (besides being awful by nature) is that Jack Sparrow is too much center stage, and is overstating his welcome really quickly.

    • @DigitalxGamer
      @DigitalxGamer 9 років тому +51

      Cosmas Dexie Sure thing:
Long story short: Senator Palpatine wanted the position of Chancellor so that he could put his plan of creating a galactic empire into motion. The entirety of the invasion of Naboo was merely to serve the purpose of embarrassing Chancellor Valorum and taking over his seat.
Palpatine had the Trade Federation invade Naboo since that's the planet he was a Senator of. He then pressures the viceroy, Nute Gunray, into forcing Queen Amidala to sign a treaty that would make the invasion seem legal but very obviously questionable and suspicious. By doing this, he put himself into a win-win situation.
If the Trade Federation fails and the Queen escapes, as she did, then he can call for a "no-confidence" vote in the Senate. If he does that, he knows that he is a powerful contender for the seat of Chancellor. However, if the Trade Federation succeeds, Palpatine is able to use that treaty to weaken Chancellor Valorum's position and help build a platform for himself, since he would be fighting against such an injustice while Valorum is letting it slide.

I like Dead Man's Chest and At World's End as much, if not more, than Curse of the Black Pearl. I never got why critics don't like them. They are visualy stunning, the action is great, the sets, costumes, make-up and cgi are spectacular, they're so epic, fun and creative, the soundtrack is one of the best of the 21st century and even though the jokes aren't as good as in the 1st one, they're funnier than the 4th or the 5th one . I can't understand not liking them because they are too complex, epic, dramatic, have too many characters and too many betrayals, like, the same thing applies for masterpieces like reservoir dogs, 12 angry men, the h8ful 8, inglorious basterds, lord of the rings, game of thrones etc. I'm not saying Pirates 2 and 3 are as good as these movies/ tv shows, they're not even close. But I just can't get why people don't like them. If you stop comparing them to the original and actualy be subjective then you will love them.
The 4th one did suck though, and the 5th one, while an improvement over 4, wasn't realy good.

The second one was more dramatic, epic, funny and had a better villain than the first one. A clear improvement. I understand why you would call the third one complicated, but I think it's a beautiful movie. It's still one of my favorites of all time. And all thanks to that specific mysterious magic that these movies have. They know how to be both dark and funny.

@@Bob-qq7bt More memorable than Davy Jones? Yeah, right! Davy Jones is the soul reason the movie won it's Oscar. He is more complex in terms of appearance and personality. By far the best villain of the franchise.
DMC has better action scenes, the music is better utilized and the crew of the Flying Dutchman is far more interesting than the cutthroats from the Pearl.
I don't really know what plot inconsistencies you're talking about.
In terms of plot structure, COTBP is all over the place. The characters are acted well but there is no greater emphasis on the curse or the plot. It's just a bunch of running around. In DMC the plot focuses on one goal, the heart, which ties it all together. Every character has the same goal but for different reasons.
Potc 1 is a good movie, but not that great of an adventure movie. Potc 2 beats it down with barely any effort.

    A) At the time the films were set (viz. the eighteenth century) it was perfectly acceptable and commonplace to hang underage people.
    B) The “pirate song or some crap like that” is based on the urban legend that Blackbeard used the nursery rhyme “Sing a Song of Sixpence” in order to recruit crew members.

Actually, I have my own theory as to why the sequels are the way they are. They're not trying to cash in on Star Wars or Lord of the Rings' length (though there's no denying that such a possibility is equally as real), but instead cash in on the *actual* pirate epic from Japan: One Piece. Now I mainly speak of the Japanese version since the third film debuted I think before Funimation came along and made up for 4Kids' sins, and to an extent it makes sense. Both series try to be as big as possible when it comes to their stories and their characters can be so deliciously over-the-top (though in both cases that's to varying degrees of effect).
But there's one big difference that makes one better than the other: With One Piece, it makes sense that it'd be built up into something epic, the entire series revolves around one straw hat wearing kid's quest to find a legendary treasure while fighting insurmountable odds along the way; and it built up its conflicts accordingly through world building of just how the franchise is supposed to function. Does the anime sometimes take longer than it should? Yes, but it also makes sure that you're given unique ideas for said world-building in doing so. Not so much with Pirates.

I liked how they were realist about the atmosphere, with the betrayls, power games, the misery, the laws... that's why I loved that openning scene with the hanging boy. It broke my heart but also set the mood for the film...which, though filled with magic, is still close to History books. I like when they go one step beyond and I feel there's improvement from the first movie to the last in what concerns the plot and the characters.

The Curse Of The Black Pearl created the best main character in cinema, that being Captain Jack Sparrow. A genius tactician disguised as a blundering drunk fool. The definition of motive someone who always has a reason as to why he does something.
Dead Mans Chest had the perfect plot, with each party having their own unique motive as to why they wanted Davy Jones heart.
Jack wanted it to bargain with Jones and remove his debt.
Will wanted it to kill Jones and release his father.
Jones wanted it in order to avoid his death
Beckett/Norrington wanted it to rule the seas.
These motivations are good because they naturally conflict. Jacks motive requires Jones be alive in order to call the Kraken off his hunt. But Wills motive requires Jones to die. Beckett needs Jones to remain captain as to rule the seas through him.
This is the perfect example of stakes, a deadline, each action will affect the film, therefore there isnt a sense of relaxation, its rooted in urgency.
At Worlds End created the perfect climactic action sequence, the final battle being one rooted in stakes. Each action had weight. Rather than being a normal battle. It uses a Maelstrom setting. It allows for amazing visuals. It is completely unique, the audience doesnt forget it because it has the glaring uniqueness of a Maelstrom . The second thing it does is keep the audience invested. Everyone has something to do and it means we are invested in their meaningful actions.
Sadly, On Stranger Tides creates no sense of urgency, if our hero doesnt get to the Fountain Of Youth, then nothing is shown to happen. Jack is built on motive, but he has forced motive in this film, he is blackmailed which makes no sense because Jack isnt the type to allow a forced motive.
And Dead Man Tells No Tales is the worst film, particularly because of Jacks character. We know that Jack Sparrow is a mastermind, a trickster, a genius disguised as an imbecile. But in this film, jack never wins by being smart. His wins are accidental, poeple liked Jack because he could escape inescapable situations because he was that clever. However this film presents him as a drunken oaf that Mr Magoos his way out of every danger, turning the most clever pirate in the Caribbean into a lucky alcoholic. Sad

Although, I do agree that there are too many plots and sometimes the movies would seem to be going nowhere. They are long and sometimes they are hard to follow but once you watch them plenty of times you know what's going to happen so you don't actually have to concentrate so much on understanding the story and you enjoy the character's interactions a lot more. At least that's been my experience with these sequels haha the first was obviously a lot simpler and fun.

Yes the first movie is still the best but those sequels aren't bad movies at all. It was when we got to On Stranger Tides (when Gore Verbinki left the director's chair), that the franchise started to got downhill. Then Dead Men Tell No Tales came out and it officially affirmed that the franchise was dead.
