@@djdoyle9 but my point was that any other major program could do the same, if they wanted to. ND may be different, but they aren't special. There's a difference.
While this is all about money, we need to see how football independence works for Notre Dame in this new world order of college football. If it hurts them then leprechaun will knock on the Big Ten's door hat in hand.
ND will continue to have their cake and eat it too. They play the ACC roughly 5 times a year with 6 games scheduled for 2023. They have 6-7 home games a year and 1 neutral site game a year. They literally play true road games 4 times a year and don’t have to play a conference championship game. It is the most ideal situation for anyone in college football.
The “neutral” site game is almost always counted as a home game. ND typically plays 6 true road games and a game listed as an ND home game in the opponents state. This season is not the norm. Also for the first time ever ND will not be playing 12 fbs games, like almost every team that plays in a CCG.
Sorry, but Dan misses several key points here. First and foremost, know the history. There was a time when ND wanted to be in the Big Ten; it was the Big Ten who didn't want them. Then, over time, the roles reversed. Now, the Big Ten would do anything to get ND in the conference. Ultimately tho, at this point, it's all about money. If ND can attract similar $$ via a TV deal, then there is no motivation to join a conference. I do think that it becomes more enticing with USC being Big Ten bound... and can get even more enticing should another rival school like Stanford joins the Big Ten. But it will always come down to money...
I bring that up all the TIME! In the early 2000s we where playing Penn state and Ohio state and everybody knew how overrated Michigan was. It was for the same reason back then for what it is now. We’d win the ACC every year. The big ten is only interesting if Michigan beats Penn state. But in to better things. Like beating USC.
My Notre Dame source has always said that Notre Dame football is a "national brand" and that a conference schedule would limit their ability to play a national schedule. However, now that Big Ten country runs coast-to-coast the ever expanding Big Ten would no longer diminish Notre Dame desire to perceived as a nationally relevant football program. Now if football independence proves to hurt Notre Dame in this new FBS World Order, and the CFP, then the Irish faithful may have a Come to Touchdown Jesus moment.
The Big 10 just added the top 4 programs on the west coast. USC, UCLA, Oregon and Washington will do infinitely more for the conference than ND ever could. Since ND isn't in a conference the only championship they can win is the National Championship and they haven't done that in 35 years. You can talk money and history all you want, they are being left behind.
I hate the current state of college but let’s be honest. Future broadcast where Ohio state is playing usc that’s going to be huge. But im a fan of a “small” program in Kansas state. I still think we will lose our selves when we lose rivalries. I enjoyed pac12. I miss old big 12 with Nebraska.
Im a Notre Dame fan that lives in reality unlike some of the other people in this fanbase. Notre Dame loves being the biggest fish in a very small pond. Thats why they will stay independent into there hand is really forced. Same with there new Apparel deal with Under Armour they love being the big fish in Under Armour's little pond. It also helps that our AD's son works for Under Armour😂. I cant wait to see some of there athletes wearing Nike's at there home basketball games this year such an embarrassment.
If they were to join a conference, the big ten would be a no brainer. However should college football become a league similar to the NFL then except Norte Dame to jump onboard.
Notre dame dosent need to join a conference. They don’t need to be beating Clemson every year in the ACC because Trevor Lawrence is gone. The big ten is only interesting because of Harbaugh because if we beat them and they lose to Penn state the Ohio state Michigan game is just meh. And know that we know that USC is The new Oklahoma, being independent looking pretty great.
If the ACC implodes, ND may want to add as many team as possible to the B1G. Also, if the B1G continues to expand and gets like 5 slots in the college football playoffs, ND would likely consider joining the B1G at that time.
ND will remain independent as long as there is a 12 (or more) team playoff. (I'm a USC fan.) There is only one way ND will join a conference, and the possibility is remote. If Big10 and SEC expand more and take the top teams from the Big12 and the ACC, and decide to hold their own playoffs, then that would be the only way ND considers joining a conference. At that point, Big10/SEC would be like the NFC and the AFC. Even then, ND may not have to join the Big10 or the SEC. The Big10 or the SEC can allow ND into their playoffs with a play-in game should ND meet some criteria ... say minimum 10 wins of which 4 are against the Big 10 or the SEC. In any case, with the 12-team playoff setup, there is zero incentive for ND to join a conference.
Notre Dame didnt join the Big 10 because they wanted to play USC every year. Well now USC is in the Big 10 and Notre Dame has a hockey team that was in the CCHA and the Big 10 is the only real hockey conference.
No, USC would’ve been on the schedule if ND was in the big10. Same for Navy. Rivals played no role. A conference offering ND nothing is the reason ND isn’t in a conference. Michigan is the reason ND didn’t join in the past. They blocked ND, HC etc was prejudiced against catholics and they literally tried to shut NDs football program down. Thankfully teams like MSU and Purdue said no to the boycott and schools across the nation scheduled ND, namely USC.

They will Join the PAC 6(with Navy) and keep playing USC, 5 ACC games and 1 open scheduling spot. Example schedule Pac 6 schedule Stanford Cal Navy OSU WSU BIG 10 USC ?Michigan ACC FSU Clemson Pitt NC State Duke Bonus NBC gets to add Stanford on the cheap.
It doesn’t matter what Notre Dame does because most of the elite talent is from SEC territory. Trying to convince a southern elite player to go play football in Indiana in 2023 is not the same as the 80’s. If Notre Dame was smart they would join the SEC.
You can tell there’s not a lot of sports going on when all they do on the Dan Patrick show is talk about Fritzi singing at the concert Friday night good God talk sports
NCAA has been pandering to ND for years now allowing one sport to join this conference, another sport another conference while FB stayed independent. Where is the fricken logic and equality in that? It should be one school - one conference. And for equality only conference schools allowed to participate in the CFP.
As things sit now. The new 12 team playoff has ND able to get a playoff spot. So for the next 10 years, ND WILL NOT join a conference. As long as they can make the money needed from apparel deals and TV deals
The only way ND joins a conference is if it contains Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and the Coast Guard. That way they at least have a chance to win a championship.
Notre Dame remains independent for only one reason: because they can. Any other program that could thrive independently would do so immediately.
Any other major program could be independent, if they wanted to.
Agreed. Notre Dame is the only football program that can thrive as an independent, and that was my point.

With a 12-team playoff coming soon, there's even less incentive for Notre Dame to join a conference.

It would still be more money. Big10 teams will get over 100 million, more with ND.
