Sydney vs Melbourne vs Adelaide Train Announcements
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лип 2021
- A comparison between automated announcements at railway stations and onboard trains in suburban Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. You might ask why I didn't include Australia's two other suburban networks - the answer is that I've never shot any video in Brisbane, and I've never been to Perth!
There are lots of interesting comparisons to be made between the language used and the format of the different announcements. Sydney lists most stations, with the occasional 'then all stations to x.' Adelaide lists every station the train stops at, while Melbourne only mentions intermediate stations if they are at either end of and express section. Adelaide and Sydney's announcements begin with the same chime tone. Sydney notably doesn't mention what time the train is scheduled - probably an intentional move to avoid drawing attention to late running. Melbourne includes the slightly cringeworthy 'Good afternoon customers' at the beginning of each announcement. This of course changes to 'Good morning customers' between midnight and noon. The 'good morning' can seem very jarring when you're sitting on the platform at 2am. The Melbourne announcement is also repeated in full. The Adelaide announcements are technically very basic, and sound very dated. 'Adelaide Showground' has clearly been recorded later, and with the wrong emphasis. The onboard announcements in Adelaide are even worse, with an extremely uninspiring voice. This is also the only example of a male voice being used in these examples.
If this is the kind of thing that floats your boat, you can find some more videos on public transport information here: • Public Transport Passe...
This video includes some footage from underground stations in Melbourne and Sydney - you find lots more videos at these locations here; • Underground Railways
In the Adelaide footage there's a bit showing a parallel run with a freight train - you can watch that full video here: • Parallel Run with 6MP5...

Melbourne might not be the best of quality but the chime is iconic
True
😊
It's a good-un, but I raise you the SNCF chime. ua-cam.com/video/k5GCHUV7Iac/v-deo.html
I have the chime as my ringtone lol
They're all iconic
The chime is like in Sydney
Sydney’s your lover, Melbourne your mother, and Adelaide is some AI that’s biding its time before launching the attack.
I love this ♥️ had to laugh at Adelaide’s though - both the platform and onboard voices just scream sarcasm 😂
Haha yeah, the first time I got on a train in Adelaide and heard that voice I burst out laughing!
Adelaide’s Train announcer used to be a female voice until they changed to a male version, sounds bad now
Now
arriving
at
Torrens
Park.
Please-
mind
the gap.
If you're wondering why 'Erskineville' triggered early and seemed to cut off 'Redfern', that's a bug unique to that station name only. 'Leppington' (outer south west station a little past Liverpool) always triggers late, with a slight delay before it's spoken. Possibly the wrong amounts of silence cut into the files?
Interesting!
Wow
Allawah has a similar glitch
the guy doing the announcements in Adelaide just sounds OH SO happy, he could charm paint off walls.
They should get rid of that, it needs to be an automated voice, I hate when the drivers do the announcements as most times they mumble.
It's cringe worthy to say the least.
He sounds too bogan
He sounds like my high school principal
Man, this is when you realise the difference between states in Aus!
So true
Sydney nails it, hands down
Yep, definitely.
@@Taitset Give me Sydney's sultry, clear voice over Melbourne's muffled, condescending kindergarten teacher anyday
@@gregorygherkins1884 the vietnamese sydney trains one is better
Yup, it's not even close. The audio in Sydney is always top notch. In Melbourne it's atrocious.
Too noisy
The Sydney station announcements are better than the rest at the sattions and the Melbourne onboard announcements are the best of the onboard announcements.
I agree but I think the station chime in Melbourne is the best if you forget about the fuzziness
Sydney's are definitely the best, and nicest voice. I even love the chime. And the audio quality is always really good. Melbourne's sound really fuzzy and horrible.
I find it weird that they have to list all the stations to the terminal station... gosh there’s a map, you don’t need to tell me all the stations... you only need to tell me the next station when on the train. This is especially weird because I’ve traveled to many countries and none of them have announcements like these in Australia
Atleast it's loud and clear.
@@jwoshywoshy The Sydney ones are even more loud and clear. I've used both systems many times.
@@gytan2221It's actually helpful because most services don't service each station on the line. For example some of my friends live at station P, so when we catch the train after school headed to Z, they need to check if the train will be stopping at P or not, so if someone just hopped on only knowing the terminus, they might go past their station
Remember to always touch on your Myki at the start of your journey
Sydney is definitely better mainly because it's clearer, automatic at regional stations and says majority of the stations and Adelaide just still our chime
And they don’t announce all station names like gosh.
On vLine they still have the man’s voice and the tone and on the upgraded Siemens Nexus trains have the same voice as Sydneys female voice in stead of being the man’s voice it’s the female’s voice But the announcement tone is the same
1:53 Sydney's station announcements are way better than Adelaide's and Melbourne's ones. ps I live in Melbourne
The sixties and seventies live announcements at Flinders street station were a topic of discussion at the time even commented on in newspapers at the time.
Maybe recorded by some unusual sources. I hope to find one for you.
I used the catch the Adelaide ones and would always think “David Hughes sounded bored when he recorded these”
I totally agree with your analysis. I catch the trains in Adelaide like twice a week, and what you said is so true.
The Adelaide announcement chime is the same as Sydney’s
Ive noticed recently that on Frankston trains they are starting to use the Sydney notification sound and the destination is being broadcast every time a train leaves a station!
depends on the train
Meanwhile, Sydney metro:
"tHe tRaIn tO cHaTsWoOd iS gOiNg tO eNtEr pLaTfOrM nUmBeR oNe"
PlEasE StaNd BaCk fRoM ThE CloSinG DoOrs
Brisbane’s City Train Stations (South Brisbane, Central, Fortitude Valley) use the same announcement sound as NSW. Other stations use double tone (lo-hi).
That gets me every time I'm in the City and hear the three tone chime from Sydney. I always feel like I'm going hear Taylor Ownes say "The next train to arrive on platform x goes to y" instead of some random staff member yelling "REDCLIFFE TRAIN PLATFORM 9 RUNNING EXPRESS BOWEN HILLS TO NORTHGATE STOPPING AT EAGLE JUNCTION!!!!"
@@iwenttobunnings7868 Damn you’re right
@@iwenttobunnings7868 but sometime it "The next train to arrive on platform _, is a _ train, stopping all stations/running express from _, to _, (then running express from _, to _, (and so on and so on)). This train arrive in approximately 2 minutes.
@@w_avorDo they use the automated announcements at the city stations? I haven't caught a train through the city in about 6-7 months now, and last time I was at a city station, they had manual announcements
@@iwenttobunnings7868 They do, but they're usually interrupted by the manual announcements. Same goes for many interchanges, such as Northgate.
Bro Adelaide be going like:
"...Unley Park, Millswood, Goodwood- *ADELAIDE SHOWGROUND.* . . . Mile End then Adelaide."
I didn’t realise how advanced Sydney’s train systems are until I moved to Melbourne.
Melbourne Feels A Lot more natural And Realistically modern
Yes
The Adelaide chime is similar to Sydney chime
Here is my opinion, I much like Sydney and Melbourne announcement, Adelaide, do your workers at metro hate their 9-5 or what ever work they have bc they sound somewhat depressed (in the train arrival) and when the train is coming, I don’t like how you have to press it to know when it’s coming, I much like how Melb and Sydney did, why why did it sounded like the speaker was an actual human talking to me, ik someone recorded it but for real, it feels really off hearing how real it is
The new Adelaide station of Marlon - good to hear Brando still getting proper recognition.
In melbourne, if u go to Southern Cross in Melbourne, ita hard to understand at the station cus of the trains, so u have to see the sign
Adelaide’s intonation is very off.
Sydney's announcement scripts are actually based on those in the UK.
UK script (next train): "The next train to {arrive at/depart from} platform # will be the HH:MM service to (via ). Calling at: . (This train is formed of # coaches.)" e.g. "The next train to arrive at platform 11 will be the 13:46 Greater Anglia service to Meridian Water via Tottenham Hale. Calling at: Lea Bridge, Tottenham Hale, Northumberland Park, and Meridian Water. This train is formed of 8 coaches."
UK script (this train): "Platform # for the HH:MM service to (via ). Calling at: . (This train is formed of # coaches.)" e.g. "Platform 10 for the 11:38 Greater Anglia service to Norwich. Calling at: Chelmsford, Colchester, Manningtree, Ipswich, Stowmarket, Diss, and Norwich. This train is formed of 12 coaches."
2:25 That looks like the inside of Melbourne Comeng trains.
They were built in the same place, and heavily based on the same design.
Sydney trains announcements are comforting
The last vline ones were the best. Attention....... vline customers......the next train to depart from.......platform X is the........ XYZ....to abc. It was so Victorian, so comforting.
adalaide sounds like a robot
Adelaide has the best onboard train announcement in the country, hands down! That male voice sounds like music to my ears with a memorable rhythm and unique tone that is distinctly iconic and recognisable from the rest of Australia. It's so satisfying when hearing the next stop announcement on the Adelaide train (especially from 2:34 to 2:49) as it slows down and enters into the station. Although, the next stop announcement as the train leaves the station and door chimes when opening/closing are slightly different for the newer 4000 class EMU trains when compared to the 3000/3100 DMU trains.
It hurts my ears, you are probably from Adelaide yourself, I think Melbourne has the best onboard announcements because they are loud and clear
The Adelaide Metro Announcement was new, It was added since 2018-2017, the old version was the female, i miss the old announcement.
Ugh the male voice 😖
ya, the femal egive my nostalgia
only reason i like melbournes announcements is because of how nostalgic they are for me
tthe adelaide train gave me comeng vibes cause of the windows
Yep, the 3000/3100 class railcars were basically the Comeng design but modified for use in Adelaide.
The male Adelaide voice seems just plain angry, and the weird accent... I laughed out loud
Oh That Vailace Sounds Like Sydney.
WHO REOREDED ADELAIDES 😭😭😭💀💀
The Melbourne dududum brings bad memories of train cancellations
The 4:56 - Hurstbridge - has been delayed :/ - and is now expected in 5 minutes
perth: 'joondalup line passengers, your next service departs in 2 minutes, this service stops all stations to butler' 'next station butler, where this service terminates'
or theres maintence ones like 'joondalup line passengers, due to scheduled track maintence your train service will be replaced by buses tonight between PERTH UNDERGROUND and WHITFORDS, transperth apologieses for any inconvenience'
Perth has the best annoucements in the country !
"This is Glendalough. Transfer here for Scarborough bus services."
Whenever there is a track incident, Transperth Trains has the pre-recorded message (something along the lines of) "This service is terminating. Please leave the train".
@@crazygrainger2006 on the 9am whitfords to perth platform 9 when it gets the it goes 'this train is no longer in service and will be going to the siding, all passengers please leave the train' and also it goes 'this train will be stopping at different platform, please exercise caution'
Richard Morecroft (ABC-TV) and Anne Sanders (Channel-7 TV) used to be the voices used in Sydney, with the latter both on platform and on board announcements. The Adelaide fellow sounds like he has come to work after a full on weekend on the slops. Best chimes and colourful announcements would have to be Japan, the worst would be in Egypt! I think years ago Jennifer Kyte (Channel-7 TV) done the Melbourne platform announcements? "Flinders Street, Flinders Street, St Albans line train now approaching platform 3, please stand clear!" No mention of "customers", either like it or lump it back then...
Sydney Trains announcement is Pre recorded voice is Taylor Owynns use to be Grant Goldman During Cityrail and Staterail days
I live in Melbourne/Victoria
I greatly prefer Melbourne's announcer, sounds classic and not too modern
I mean idk it's so muffled, (well, the onboard announcements I prefer rather then Sydney's), I much rather prefer Sydney's
No cap the Adelaide announcement just sounds kinda dead😂
The way they say Adelaide Showground is hilarious.
2:37 “please mind the ghup” lol do south Australians sound like that?
ahh yes, i remember them, the voice made me so releaxed, but it looks like a cool one in the syndey
2:02 I love the magpie warbling in Adelaide.
My favourite is the Melbourne ones
Mine Sydney it’s more Clear and loud
@@tropictrains8956 that's just the speakers at Melbourne Central station though, they are clearer at other stations (and less so at others, I'm sure).
@@tropictrains8956 thats just the speakers at melbourne central station though. The Melbourne ones repeat themselves multiple times and are loud.
@@timelordvictorious2 oh well I don’t mind Melbourne’s then
Does it also echo and make it quite loud instead of a small speaker like Adelaide and Melbourne’s central?
1:45 cheer up a bit will ya? 😂
The Sydney Metro announcements are horribly robotic, or they were when I used it on opening day.
the Sydney announcements are the best, clear, precise and straight to the point and doesn't waste time on unnecessary greetings. I might be bias because I live in Sydney so I am used to our more impersonal and automated announcements. I don't really like the Melbourne ones, I just think they're way too long because they waste time on greetings when they don't need to and they keep repeating the same thing it's not necessary, and they sound condescending, it's like the Melbourne announcements are treating the commuters like a bunch of children who can't read what's on the display boards. I don't like the Adelaide ones either. Sorry, I just prefer the Sydney announcements the best, like I said our announcements are clear and precise and short, ours might not sound as "personable" or "natural" but it does its job, which is to announce the train services and train stops, without wasting any time and our announcements don't sound condescending either, because Sydney Trains treats its commuters like adults, not a bunch of children. I'm sorry Melbourners, but your announcements are my least favourite, they are too long and sound too condescending and annoying. I also love the voice of the Sydney announcements the best.
I feel like this is a very biased comment, I mean yeah, I agree that the sydney voice sounds much nicer, but the so called "waste of time" you mentioned on the greeting is literally a second long. And I assume for most people being greeted by a real natural sounding person when they board their train is much more appealing than a montone robotic sounding one. Also, the announcement is not pointlessly long, its actually pretty quick and concise, and is probably more useful than the sydeny one cos it actually tells you when the next train is departing. Also, it probably seems long because that particular service was express, so it was listing the stations the train would not stop at hence why it was quite long, most services are stopping all stations and would not go on for so long only listing the final destination. On the contrary, listing a bunch of stations the train would be expected to be stopping at anyway is a waste of time, excessively long, and somewhat condecending, as if the commuters are being treated like a bunch of children. This is a really pointless reply and I dont know why I got so heated about this, probably just sister city rivalry lol, but I rest my case.
"Our announcements are clear, precise and short"
Yeah, just like your 3 page essay comment 😆
Good Afternoon Passengers. Your next service to depart from Platform 1 will be the 1:32 Flinders Street stopping all stations to Flinders Street. Your next service to depart from Platform 1 will be the 1:32 Flinders Street stopping all stations to Flinders Street. And always remember to touch on your myki at the start of your journey.
@lahsrah And I agree while it might be ok information to include in Melbourne with some lines having like half-hourly or hourly service, in Sydney (other than intercity trains), it’s not really necessary to have the time in the announcement since most lines have 15 minute or better frequency anyways
@@deanl4575 Outside of the unelectrified Stony Point shuttle from Frankston, nowhere in Melbourne has hourly services. 40 minutes at worst and that's only for Hurstbridge after Eltham (which has 20 minute frequencies) and Sunbury after Watergardens (which also has 20 minute frequencies). The rest of the network has 10-20 minute frequencies in the day which can drop to 20-30 minute frequencies at night.
When I lived (growing up) in Adelaide in the 70's-80's, station announcements were to stick your head out of the left open door of a red hen train and hopefully get off in time.
sydney does it best
Onboard announcements in Melbourne are better but station announcements in Sydney are better.
It’s strange to hear locations like “mile end” as a Londoner because I picture the rather nice tube station and not somewhere in Adelaide!
I didn't realise London had a Mile End! If you haven't already, look up pictures of the Adelaide one - it's about as different as you can get. Another funny comparison is South Kensington in London vs the one in Melbourne, which I think was voted our worst station at some point.
NSW train announcements are the best!
@@ktreagus who has better announcements?

Does anyone know when Sydney and Adelaide started to use their pa chimes, cause I think Toronto might have copied it, cause I've recently been hearing identical chimes used on our commuter train network...
Sydney at least since the early 2000s
Nice.
Hate the male voice on Adelaide trains.. Whenever I go on I instantly think 'when will they change this!'
I have to agree, the Sydney announcements are the best followed by Adelaide, Melbourne is yuck and grainy. Needs new speakers im assuming and a better announcer? and that chime is stupid.
I dunno, the chime is realy dumb and pointless but i kinda like it in a weird way, and i guess its kinda useful to alert yoou that an annoucements gonna happen soon. But yeah the speakers seriously need an update.
Wait did Adelaide steal the sydney trains chime like the bing bong bing
Sydney’s train’s announcements are way better, not saying cuz I live in Newcastle nsw which is Sydney transport, + Sydney’s trains are bigger and nicer
adelaide is so robot-ish
It's uncomfortable to me as a Sydneysider seeing the Melbourne and Adelaide trains be so unsteady, they move around so much ... I think I definitely take the double decker comfort for granted.
It's mostly to do with track quality- ours sucks, Sydney's is almost always perfect.
@@Taitset and also the fact that the train shown for Melbourne was an X'Trapolis, otherwise known as the X'Trampoline. hard to believe that even the Comeng has a smoother ride than the X'Trap honestly
