Prior to around 2018/19, the onboard announcements on Brisbane trains were actually pretty good. There were only two announcements, one indicating the next station, and one indicating what station you're at, and they were very brief. Once the NGR's came along, that's when we had to have 3x 45-60 second announcements for every station, and the announcements are always on the most max volume setting available. Gives me a headache thinking about it.

For me, Adelaide has the best on-board train announcements. A lot of comments complain about how bad or cringey Adelaide's voice announcement is, but once you hear it many times, it will start to grow on you. This statement might be controversial as not everyone will agree with me, and that's fine as we're allowed to have our own preferences by engaging in a civil discussion.
Other Australian cities like Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane have the generic accent for Australian English. Adelaide's on-board sound sets it part from the rest, and in my own opinion, it's the most unique of all.

@jactheone8539 Corrected: This is a Springfield Central train, stopping all stations... The next station is Roma Street... Customers for the Beenleigh, Gold Coast or Cleveland lines and long distance services please change trains at Roma Street...
Now arriving at Roma Street... if this is your station prepare to disembark... Customers are reminded that the exit buttons are located in the middle of the doors...
      Roma Street...

    My preferences are,
    Next train: Sydney
    This train: Melbourne
    Next station: Melbourne = Brisbane
    Arriving at: Melbourne
    This station: Sydney = Brisbane
    Change trains: Melbourne = Brisbane
    Terminating: Melbourne
    Doors closing: Brisbane
Never a fan of Adelaide. Audio for Perth is too poor to judge.

Shame that Adelaide changed to those god awful male onboard announcements. They had clear properly put together announcements when the 3000s were first refurbished.

I was the developer of the Perth station announcement systems. It's not changed much in 30 years! Your recording is awful! The reason my system has endured is because the text and voice model are very understandable. When I introduced it I got commendations from both deaf and blind associations because they could finally understand the announcements. The key was to use a neutral accented voice model with zero 'personality' exaggerations and to speak at a measured rate.

Thanks for your comment and insight! Some of the recordings aren’t great as the clips are taken from longer videos which didn’t focus on capturing announcements. Well done on the development! Nice to hear that the system has lasted so long :)

Thanks for your effort. The Perth train announcements are really good. Clear and gets to the point. Are the voices recordings of actual people or computer synthesis?

    • @minxythemerciless
      @minxythemerciless 5 місяців тому +2

@@thompsonmatthew It's all recordings of individuals saying a variety of phrases and sentences that are then stitched together to make the complete announcement. The original script I wrote used phrasing so that there was a natural voice break between each segment. E.g. I used the phrase "in two minutes" rather than "in" "two" "minutes". So it is "Passengers for Armadale" "your next train departs from platform 1" "In two minutes". This trades off the amount of recording required with the obvious mismatched word-level assembly some other systems use.
With modern AI it's possible they generate the speech synthetically, but even if they are they are still using my original script with very minor additions.
