Trapped ring puzzle/trick IMPOSSIBLE (not really)

  • ***And another addition:
    Wow. Thousands of angry and offensive comments. So:
    Comments relating to this video, relevant ideas, and constructive conversations will remain un-moderated.
    But, because there is no reasonable, intelligent person who would concern him/herself with wasting time to make an anonymous analysis of a person like me, if you do make a comment about me, here is what you can expect:
    #1 Your initial (useless) comment.
    #2 My reply. Matched to suit, insults and all.
    #3 Your angry and even less relevant reply.
    #4 I get the last word. All further replies are removed.
    If you make a statement relating to my person, you are clearly demonstrating to me that you are neither reasonable nor intelligent; thus, you will become like a piece of meat to me, and I will use your pointless points for my own amusement and for the amusements of others. Seriously, think about this: We don't know each other. How is it fair for you to make judgments about me, when you know so little? Don't be that guy. Do you think I'm smug, arrogant, narcissistic, or pretentious? Well, unless you have a few videos with a million plus views, keep it to yourself. You would not believe the offensive drivel that leaks out of this place.
    ***The following was later added:
    Secret spoiler comments are now removed, and there is now a keyword filter. The comment that makes me laugh is the "did anyone else notice..." type. Yes, everyone else noticed. In fact, the filter catches around 30 of these comments a day, and then there is the other 5 or 10 per day that I have to remove manually because so many commenters can't spell.
    It is a bit sad that un-moderated comments get so bad. One of the most surprising things about it is how many of you talk without listening; it is not uncommon to see ten of the same comment in a row (because nobody reads what others say), nor is it unusual for me to read dozens of comments about a topic that is answered in the first line of the description. Sorry if it seems as though I am chastising you, because your having taken the time to read this is evidence that none of this actually applies to you.
    ***Original description:
    Because of the cruel irony that is the way that youtube views are distributed, this video will likely go largely ignored, but the idea was this: remember that surprisingly popular pinball in a cube video? I figured that I should try to repeat some of its success by reproducing the formula a little bit (including, but not limited to, use of the word "impossible" in the title for views). I think, but I can't be sure, that this puzzle/trick is better by all measures than the pinball one. I'm not really sure, because I was never really fooled by this puzzle, because I designed it. I'm not trying to sound like I'm so clever, it's just that I don't really know how long this puzzle would have stumped me, because I've never been faced with solving this particular problem. Pay attention to the moment that you knew, for certain, how the trick worked. Often we just give up and wait for the solution to be presented to us, but it sure is satisfying when you work it out for yourself. For exactly that reason, I wanted the video to progress in such a way that it reveals itself ever so slowly (for those who don't spoil it by skipping to the end), which forces the viewer's brain to work at least a little towards figuring it out for themselves. Maybe I'm thinking too much into this, but maybe not. I mean, if a stadium full of people are going to watch this, I have at least some small responsibility to those people, in the sense that they should be engaged or be improved in some way after being distracted from their lives by watching it. Maybe if some of them learn the general idea of what an algorithm is, they didn't waste their time. Whatever. Maybe I'm not that good at it, but I just try to make videos in a way that would interest me if I were the one watching. Well, I'm sending this video public right now, and I am very curious to find out how well received this puzzle will be. Thanks for listening.

    Quite apart from the clever little puzzle, I really thoroughly enjoyed the "instructional video" of woodworking and building the puzzle. You have an unusually good instinct for instruction. The video is well filmed, and shows all the important steps in a way that both explains why you are doing them, and that demonstrates completely the steps involved. I am no woodworker, but I feel like I could indeed reproduce the puzzle by following the steps you demonstrate so well. I'm a tech writer, so I really appreciate well-done instruction and explanations. Thanks very much.

    I would have put in a little spring to keep the center post up. This would require a little extra downward pressure to open it. Thus, it would be more difficult for someone to accidentally stumble onto the soution.

      +SuperDuckyWho And after perusing the description and comments I'm confused as to why anyone would go batshit psycho over this. It's a UA-cam video, and a fairly interesting one involving good craftsmanship. If it was ACTUALLY impossible then it wouldn't be a puzzle, would it people? It would just be a thing with a ring in the middle. Wtf?

    The instructions were great. Thank you. The puzzle though, I thought was not a fair test of intelligence since, as you mentioned, the solver lacks a key piece of information. Unless if the point is to get the silver to think outside of box and test the strength of the device. But by that logic, breaking the device would also work. Am I wrong in that thinking?

    • @SteelBlueVision
      @SteelBlueVision 9 років тому +36

      Barry I also thought that it should have been a puzzle and not a hidden latch to remove the ring . I thought the piece was very nice but not much in the realm of mystery

    • @Th3EpitapH
      @Th3EpitapH 8 років тому +1

      +Barry Sabahat does it need to be a fair test of intelligence? also i'd argue that it'd be more appropriate to consider testing the middle rod is simply confirmation that there are no movable parts. that's much closer to attempting to test if the wood blocks separate than deciding to break them. it's not complex, it's simply about information gathering processes instead of information processing and analysis. at least that's my take on it.

    Despite all the angry comments, I found this video to be very interesting. It really goes to show how us humans sometimes perceive a problem as being impossible to solve because we expect that there is NO WAY the solution would be that simple. We go on trying to solve the problem using overcomplicated steps, to match our overcomplicated perception of the simple issue, while the solution is much simpler. Thanks for this eye-opener.

      I feel MOST would look at it, shake it a little, pull at the ring ...then lastly, start on the posts.
      I give this puzzle a difficulty rating of 5/10 - when in your HAND.

I am however, slightly concerned and disappointed by the number of abusive comments others have given (my concern being for the influx in insulting or aggressive comments over the years). I don't often comment on UA-cam videos, but here I felt compelled to do so. These people contribute nothing positive whatsoever to anything. Their comments only serve to prove how puerile and offensive they actually are. I admire your resilience and resolve. Alex T That's a great philosophy- complacence! Let's just sit here and do nothing, and concede that the entire internet is just a playground for the recently pubescent to work out their primal frustrations however they see fit.
      I have a better idea: we remind each other daily, and by whatever means required, that parts of the internet are a public forum. You may like your town square filled to the brim with screaming illiterates running around shaking their dinkuses at you, but I like an atmosphere that is a little more conducive to creativity while I'm explaining a project.
      There will always still be places that you are free to go for your _other_ activities, but please, take it out of my workshop. Here we use sentences and decency, or else I will chastise you just as if you were misusing a utility knife.

    I'm not unreasonable or unintelligent, but that description seems a bit harsh and extremely pointless to me. There are idiots here. The world is full of them. Being harsh to them won't stop them from being stupid. Why waste your energy insulting them and writing long descriptions they won't read?

    • @pocket83
      @pocket83  7 років тому +14

      That's not an unreasonable or unintelligent question. The answer: probably because of how shocked I was at the time. I had no idea. Now I understand; the mindset of the average online video media consumer is one of anger, entitlement, disrespect, false superiority, and echo-chamber induced ignorance. In fact, most comments are so offensive, insulting, and illegible that I now allow less than 10% of them to be posted. Once a week, I scroll down and look for anything that makes sense, asks a question, or offers legit criticism- and out of a hundred I get a handful.
      They are also surprisingly predictable. The sameness of comments is startling. I can tell you now that your comment will soon have many thumb-ups for its neutral "let's all just get along" appearance, while this reply will go unconsidered. A sentence or two from my description tells you that I am a tyrannical narcissist who can't take criticism- that's all these people need to permanently make up their minds about me.
      And so, my rhetorical question to you is, why wouldn't you want to force such a mob to confront its own self-destruction? What you call "harsh," I call productive. The choice to remain ignorant _should_ be ridiculed. I won't allow it to get comfortable around me.

      I appreciate the appreciation! I'll type out a few more when I get some time. I usually wait until they get lots of views before I bother. If there is a certain one you are after, let me know. I was thinking of doing either the tetrahedral puzzle or the truncated icosahedron solution, but it's no laughing matter to type out 15 minutes of dialogue. Sorry for not being more on top of it.

    Guess I'm 10 years late, but really enjoyed this puzzle build video. Well done and makes this very "makeable" by all that view it. The bit to drill this was called a Forestner bit and I would also spray the steel rods also with Lacquer to protect from corrosion in the long run. Great Job on this!!!!

    If would be better if you gave the puzzled victim a false sense of hope with a misleading solution giving them incentive to try and figure it out rather than giving them nothing at all and having them give up right away. Maybe a section cut out from the middle rod the exact size of the ring? Have one piece of the rod glued and keep the other magnetized. Something like that would give them reason to stay and at the same time actually make it harder for them to find the real solution.

    Cool : ) I'd seen a similar type box puzzle which was called Escape from Alcatraz. It used magnets but, a little differently. You couldn't pull the post to release it from the magnet. Below the shorter post was a small rod in the base of the box that was held in place by the magnet. You had to strike the puzzle against the palm of you hand causing the rod to come loose from the magnet creating the space for the post to move so that the ball trapped inside could come out.

  • @mrburton9096
    @mrburton9096 7 років тому +2

    It's just an idea, but wouldn't it be more "theatrical" by using a stronger magnet in your hand? Maybe as a ring you wear, you could do this trick right in front of your friends putting your finger right below the center post (where there is not the hidden and weaker magnet), do the trick hiding with your hand and removing your finger (maybe upside down so the center post goes back to it's position before of showing you removed the ring). BTW +1 nice trick ;)

I watched the video before even thinking about how it worked. Not sure why, but it didn't detract from the enjoyment either way. It was fun watching the trick evolve. Figured out how it worked as soon as I saw the center hole on one side being deeper than the other. Solidified that idea when the magnet appeared. Simple but intriguing.
