    I don't care for puzzles that hide mechanics from you, it takes away the thinking and replaces it with guessing. there is actually no feasible way for you to KNOW that mechanic is there. someone got mad at that puzzle and just started rattling it. Solving the puzzle.

      You can think of it in a couple of ways: why is it called helicopter puzzle? Why does the crossed section not separate? why when i tip it do I feel/hear movement. A friend got me this for Christmas it was a shit present.

    • @aceisking12
      @aceisking12 7 років тому +64

      PlatyMoose1 so I saw this puzzle at a friend's house, and after a minute I asked what the locking mechanism inside it was. There's actually a really easy trick that solves it way easier, you just throw it spinning straight up in the air and when you catch it the locks have moved to the outside. Since it was spinning while in "free fall", no orientation change is needed and both pins are out.
      Edit: explains how it got the name "helicopter" too

      Jill Quinn - It goes by many names. But, as mentioned, YOU CAN HEAR AND FEEL THE PIECES MOVING AROUND INSIDE. It's no secret to anyone actually trying to
      solve it that there are loose pieces acting as locking pins. From that starting point, it's simply a matter of lateral thinking.

    So the "solution" is basically to break open an internal metallic mechanism that isn't apparent, and probably shouldn't be relevant to a wooden puzzle, at all. Rather underwhelming.

      Agreed. They might as well create a ball maze that doesn't have a clear cover, forcing you to guess what the maze may look like to get the ball from one end to the other. Difficult? Sure. A puzzle? Hardly.

    • @jaredmutia9703

      But all you have to do is change the orientation of the piece and you can hear and feel the pins falling to the other sides. So it's not like the person trying to solve it is unaware of their presence. Also: of course it's a puzzle. What the hell kind of criteria do you have that makes it not a puzzle? And really? A trick? That's what a puzzle IS.

    • @thewhalebear7073
      @thewhalebear7073 7 років тому +131

      The issue with calling it a puzzle using that definition is that, although you do think, you're not really thinking outside the box by just shaking it. The answer isn't clever, because it's just unlocking two pins that you can't see, by just shaking. There is no skill involved at all.

    • @SangerZonvolt
      @SangerZonvolt 7 років тому +132

      For it to be a puzzle it needs to be solvable by thinking alone (e.G. you have all necessary information). If there are hidden mechanics that you can´t deduce then you are forced to use trial and error.

    • @mrjt1081

      A puzzle is a game, problem, or toy that tests a person's ingenuity or knowledge. In a puzzle, one is required to put pieces together in a logical way, in order to arrive at the correct solution of the puzzle. There are different types of puzzles for different ages, such as crossword puzzles, word-search puzzles, number puzzles, or logic puzzles.
      even door locks could be called a puzzles for people who doesn't know how it work. most of these applications fall under logic puzzles category. 👌

Mechanisms you can't see or touch, but you can actuate are just as much puzzles as the ones you can see.

      Tirion, that's one way of looking at it. The other way of looking at it is that when I was growing up, when you bought a 'Puzzle', what you got was what you saw - i.e. there were no hidden locking pins or anything like that, it just required you to figure out a way to make a certain shape fit through, or around, another shape (or to do some maths and apply some logic, like the Taipei tower puzzle, and others).
      So to people like me, this kind of puzzle looks like trickery... and that sentiment is echoes in many of the comments.

    Whoever came up with this one is extremely smart. I never got a look at the ends of the cross for drill holes as it would be almost impossible to drill those holes from the slot (Rabbet) cut in the wood. Crazy puzzle.

  • @dadnbud

    I figured it out in less then 30 seconds in our local toy store. It's obvious the cross was overlayed in a way the pieces slide apart. Puzzles are things people over think such simple solutions. It's either a trick cross or trick ring. I figured it might not be the ring as it's tinier and more fragile. Then I figured it's either glued and didn't want to break it, then I thought helicopter. Spin....I didn't spin it, as it wouldn't just budge loose. I jiggled it or slapped it lightly against my hand and it gave way, slid it out and was like is that all?! Cool concept.

  • @chocofountain
    @chocofountain 7 років тому +3

    when the cross is spinning the pins go away from the center. like when you put a small ball in a glass jar and then spin the jar, the ball will go to the sides

      @@peterkelley6344 Oh, I just started working with wood again, and I was recently wondering about this question.
      So, chemically, they are identical, apart from the colouring additives? I'm guessing that a varnish brings out and preserves the natural, desirable colour of a wood, whilst lacquer does the opposite and hides the non-desirable colour of a wood?
      Interesting, thank you!

    someone thought about whether or not to consider this a puzzle and then a bunch of people just read that comment and said the same thing without thinking. This is what amazes me about youtube. We think we can define what a certain company calls a puzzle. We are simply too proud. They can call it a puzzle if they want. And of course, we can all copy the guy that said it wasn't a puzzle, if we really want.

      Puzzle: noun a game designed to test ingenuity or knowledge.
      This does neither since the only way to solve it is by dumb luck, someone telling you how to solve it, or MRI/ultrasound.
      So no we aren't lemmings following each other over a cliff.

    • @Vitorruy1
      @Vitorruy1 6 років тому

      bkpickell I think this involves a lot of ingenuity. The clue is in the name. Like the Bad Radio puzzle. In fact the great majority of box puzzles work based on trial and error, there's nothing wrong with that as it's a completely valid learning experience.

    • @trod146
      @trod146 7 років тому

      Robert Rijkers but without the name of the puzzle what clues at all would anyone have to solve it? none, and it would just be trial and error until dumb luck solved it. I think that makes this nothing more than a scam artist trick than a legitimate puzzle, something at a carnival to take your money or at a children's museum to wow small kids.

    • @panda4247
