My problem with this film is that it wasn’t “All quiet on the western front” but a totally different art house style film with very little to do with the original. I think I would of liked it allot more if it had a different name and wasn’t claiming to be a modern remake of one of the best films ever made.
It’s more of an adaptation of the novel than the remake of the 1930 movie. I guess the makers wanted to show something a bit new, something that is more of their vision. The 1930 movie showed the novel’s story brilliantly, so this movie tried some new things, and took some liberties. The parallel story about the armistice is a bit more essential now as people today are not particularly well versed in history. This isn’t the first time the director is adapting a novel for the screen, he also did it with Patrick Melrose (now that’s a series that pretty stays completely true to the source material)

Like you said, that's your problem.
@@charlesgrant-skiba5474 Still valid points though mate. Original will always be the best.
@@Armo1997 Thanks, but the original is only the novel itself, all the movies are just subsequent adaptations. Regards.
We need a little distance and humor in life. Isn't that true?
