How to eat Grits 101: there are a few methods. Option 1) if you order plain grits add lots of butter, salt and black pepper. You’ll know it’s enough butter when the grits turn lightly yellow. You can eat it with eggs and/or bacon or sausage instead of eating it alone. 2) Order cheese grits. Typically you get it with cheddar or American cheese but you can get fancy if you want. The grits should be very cheesy and yellow color throughout. If the restaurant only adds a slice of cheese on top of plain grits MIX the cheese in so it’s evenly distributed. Every bite should be cheesy. Again can be eaten with eggs, sausage or bacon. Add salt and pepper to taste. 3) Just get shrimp and grits but only at a good quality Cajun/Creole or Louisiana restaurant. Or just order it in New Orleans. This type is already seasoned and shouldn’t need anything added to it.
Hopefully you use syrup!!! Not a drip! LOL NO don't just eat plain grits - needs salt, pepper and butter at least!!! Even a bit of the gravy!! Chicken and waffles is not meant to be eaten "as is" - it is truly supposed to have syrup all over it!!
with grits you need to add a couple pats of butter, a few pinches of salt and some kind of protein (crumbled bacon, cubed ham, crumbled sausage, or even shrimp). DON'T use milk in it as that's for oatmeal, not grits.. many in the Northern areas like to use milk, but don't do that. some people like cheese, but I don't prefer it... also, many believe that the name comes from the texture (gritty) but that's not true. it comes from the type of grounding at the mill that happens to produce it... 'grit' ground.
Grits ( to me) needs to be seasoned with butter and salt. Cheese is also nice. Also if you eat it with a bite of your protein which also help to season the grits.
Ya'll should have put that butter, salt, and pepper on the grits (that's why there was a small cup of butter on your plate) butter makes everything better, lol

That little cup with a blob of butter is supposed to go in the grits! With pepper and a little salt, I probably would have cut up some of that bacon and added that too. We never eat grits plain.
I've always said that in the South there's rarely a wrong way to eat food. We might add 4 different sauces to a meal, or mix our veggies into a bowl of pasta. Grits are the exception to the rule. The only wrong way to eat grits is by putting nothing in it. American servers do not mind if you ask them questions about the food like what's the best way to try the grits ? LOL Grits are meant to be a conduit for other things. My personal favorite is cheese butter salt pepper and crumbled up crispy bacon, all stirred together. Some people want their grits sweet so they use just sugar or butter and sugar. Most everybody I know put butter in their grits. I've seen people put hot sauce in them. So next time you order grits be bold.. do you and try some flavors you like in your grits. By the way those grits look like they were prepared perfectly. Overcooked grits are often sticky and lumpy undercooked grits are usually runny and coarse.. fluff and soft we're just a little bit of texture is just right imo. Some people mix in their eggs, pieces of sausage and cheese. With blueberries I've seen people put fresh blueberries in their grits.
Yeah, another thing that I thought of, is having a live feed, and we could tell them---'course, it might get on their nerves, having everybody hollerin' at them to put butter on their grits, for instance!!!
LOL....grits are Southern. It's what was put in front of you to eat...and so you ate it. Those saying "skip the grits" aren't from the South. Or they are southerners who sat there and had dry heaves if made to sit until they ate all their food by their parents. I mostly was served a slab of ham and eggs with grits for breakfast...and would include a bit of all three in every bite. With what came with the bowl of grits, on the plate, I would add the butter, gravy, and chop up the fried bacon into the bowl and eat it all together. Chicken-n-waffles needs the syrup...but try the gravy w/chicken-n-waffles so you can say you tried it. But I would've doused it all in syrup.
"They're not southern"...grits aren't southern? Really? Grits originated during the 16th century among the Native American Muskogee tribes of southeastern states, including Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. These tribes are credited with grinding dried corn into a coarse, gritty texture and serving it to colonists. When I lived there, in the 70's and 80's, grits were served at nearly every meal. I would confidently say the southeast still eats more grits than any other region in the world.
@@Roh_Echt 😁 Southerners like to claim everything! It's a black food, but southern it is not. We have had grits for way too long up north. It's eaten mostly by Black people, but it ain't hardly exclusive to the south.
"Grits are southern" was simply a reference to their origin. I'm not southern and I am not trying to give the south any credit here. I never said it is "exclusive to the south"...you alone did. And now you say "it's a black food." So I'll just leave you now, with your battle for the rights to the origination of grits.
@@Roh_Echt That's not a battle for rights. It's just the truth. It's just like alligator meat is Cajun culture, but not southern. Sweet potato pie is Black culture, but not southern. Chitterlings are Black culture, but not southern. Corn bread is Native American and African culture, but not southern. Grits originate from my Native American ancestors who also had African heritage. The culture is considered Black, so hence my point about grits, which are eaten primarily by Black people!
Chicken and waffles is something I've seen around the Midwest from time to time, but generally never ordered. We did prepare it a couple times when I worked in a hospital cafe. But I never ordered it myself until I had it in Fairbanks Alaska and it was DELICIOUS. For grits I generally treat it like it's cream of wheat, which I personally have more exposure to. They aren't the same thing, but they are fairly similar. I like adding fruit, chopped or slivered nuts, and a little sweetness like honey.
with chicken and waffles. you can drizzle syrup over it to make it better. or like here, you can use country (white, pepper) gravy on it... either works.
Guys... Please spread the word for the benefit of other travelers trying these things for the first time: Grits is not so much a thing unto itself as it is a vehicle for other flavors. I don't know a single soul who eats plain grits. At a minimum, you need butter, salt, and pepper, but I don't eat grits at all unless I can mix in scrambled eggs, crumbled bacon, and ketchup (I know. I'm a little weird). Cheese grits are very popular, but I'm not a big cheese eater, so that's not my thing. Also, I don't think I've seen you try cornbread yet, but promise me you'll never eat it unless it's warm and buttered. When in doubt, ask the locals for suggestions on how to "dress" foods that would otherwise be kinda plain. Cheers!
Don't listen to everyone bashing you for not drenching something over a dish you don't even know if you'll like or not. I'm American, I'm not a huge syrup fan, and I enjoy chicken and waffles just fine. There are no rules for how to try something new. Enjoy!

Chicken and waffles is not meant to be eaten "as is" - it is truly supposed to have syrup all over it!!
UK citizen: I'd like to try the peanut butter and jelly sandwich please, without the jelly.
Syrup on chicken is gross
I have eaten grits all my life and 2 things are an absolute must....BUTTER AND SALT.
Grits are ground corn.
with grits you need to add a couple pats of butter, a few pinches of salt and some kind of protein (crumbled bacon, cubed ham, crumbled sausage, or even shrimp).
To eat grits, you have to put it with the egg and the egg yokes with salt and pepper.
Grits ( to me) needs to be seasoned with butter and salt. Cheese is also nice. Also if you eat it with a bite of your protein which also help to season the grits.
I love grits with some butter, crumbled bacon and salt and pepper! Yummmmm 🤗🤗🤗
Ya'll should have put that butter, salt, and pepper on the grits (that's why there was a small cup of butter on your plate) butter makes everything better, lol
1:15 nooo that’s not we tell you about grits! we tell you to season them, and put some butter on em! 😂😂
Butter and salt on grits, for me!! ...and, SYRUP on the chicken & waffles!! :) HUGS, YA'LL!!!
Put some butter on the grits and let it melt in the grits, then mix it in.
grits always need flavor. Butter and salt and pepper. Or Cheesy grits with bacon crumbled in them.
Oh, Lord🤦🏻♀️ You’ve gone and done it now……stirred the South up with the grits abuse😂
Grits on their own are too bland. You definitely need to add butter and/or cheese.
Exactly. They need to think of them as something like mashed potatoes.
And a shit ton of salt and pepper.
The diner near me that serves chicken and waffles also serves it with strawberry butter and the maple syrup or spicy maple syrup.
You've got to do grits with salt, pepper and butter or the other route is more like a dessert with butter and sugar and that's actually pretty delicious Cheesy grits are good as well.
Grits are best freshly warm (do not let them go cold as they will harden) with butter (especially butter cream if you can) and sugar. Eat them like cream of wheat.
Grits is one of those food items you can customize to your pallet you can add salt, butter, cheese even where im from lousiana, Shrimp and grits is very popular some people like the sweet side and add sugar, honey butter and so on im a savory pallet type of person myself.
You've got to do grits with salt, pepper and butter or the other route is more like a dessert with butter and sugar and that's actually pretty delicious
That little cup with a blob of butter is supposed to go in the grits! With pepper and a little salt, I probably would have cut up some of that bacon and added that too. We never eat grits plain.
Plain grits??? The butter is right there….!
A lot of syrup on the chicken & waffles. Lots of sugar and butter in the grits.
Milie is correct. That cream gravy is magical!! It is good on everything. You are officially American. lol
Butter and cheese go well on grits. Or shrimp (prawns) on top.
LOL
Grits are meant to be a conduit for other things.
Gotta butter your grits
The best food ever 💪🤘😎 Butter , salt & pepper on Grits... this gave me anxiety 😬 😫 😅😅
USE the syrup!!! You guy ate dry pancakes at IHOP too!!
No, they just dont soak everything they eat in one sauce like a fast food chinese combo.
The only way I'm eating that is first covering the chicken in hot sauce and then covering it all in maple syrup.
Hell yeah, right !!
A lot of southerners add eggs, cheese and bacon to the grits. They tend to be a little bland if eaten by themselves.
No real southern puts cheese in grits. Butter, salt and pepper and red eye gravy. Then you mix in your eggs a breakfast meat.

Sorry kiddos, since you don't know how to eat the items ask the server.
She even volunteered to bring syrup. It was like she was saying "hint, hint". 😁
Calm down boomer
They don't seem to read the comments, I guess, unless you are on their Patreon.

i know people from Kentucky who out milk on their grits and eat grits like a cereal.
I clicked off after watching you all eating grits. I can't watch another video of you all eating food incorrectly. Ask the waitress!
Brits don't ask wait staff for anything other than the check.
Yeah, another thing that I thought of, is having a live feed, and we could tell them---'course, it might get on their nerves, having everybody hollerin' at them to put butter on their grits, for instance!!!
You have to piy butter in the grits and you can add cheese to it,or salt and pepper to it also.
They're not southern.
You need to put butter on the grits and season it.
grits usually goes with something else. try butter, cheese
Guys... Please spread the word for the benefit of other travelers trying these things for the first time:
Grits is not so much a thing unto itself as it is a vehicle for other flavors.
Enjoy!
Lots of butter and pepper in my grits, but hold the syrup on my chicken. Just not raised that way. If I want a sweetened fried chicken I'll have General Tso's.
Yup. Never too much syrup and never too much gravy. Restaurants expect that. MERICA! 🇺🇸😋
Ask for extra syrup add it and butter to the grits. And syrup goes with the chicken and waffles
Never, ever eat grits without at least some butter! A little sugar added with the butter is good, too.
If you don't like the sweet tea or can't ingest sugar, order un-sweet tea, then you can use artificial sweetener if desired or not.
Butter the waffle then put the chicken on the waffle and cover both with syrup... a lot of syrup 😊
Have to have butter and cheese in grits. lol
The butter goes in the waffle then the syrup . So the butter melts . Delicious
I always order unsweetened tea but add a little bit of sweet to it. Alma every sweet tea is too sweet.
