The girl that vibes with Pathologic for a living here! (I wish they would pay me though!) I am also the person behind the machine (and afterwards human retouched) translation, and also behind a spanish (machine with human retouch) translation. Mind you this was mostly done out of the want for me to play the tech demo, and afterwards I decided why not share it because it is an experience 😅. And mind you, my Russian is extremely limited, so that, plus the machine translation, made it a given that I would not get the tone right and all that. Also, fun fact! Kuron does indeed appear in later versions of the game, he is the protagonist of the play that is shown in the Theatre prior to the Bachelor's arrival. This was a delightful video, and of course, I am following now.
its so weird seeing a version of the town/game that isn't incredibly depressing in appearance it also feels completely different, like a 80s/90s cgi test rather than a game
i'm gonna be honest the fact pathologic was originally supposed to be set in what appears to be the 90s during the yeltsin years doesn't surprise me at all and it would make the whole plague and societal collapse contrasted with the carefree children in the polyhedron metaphor make so much more sense outside of the abstract
This has always been my take on the game’s perspective. Ultimately, I will never know what the developers intended, but I have always interpreted (the setting of) Pathologic as a reflection on the events proceeding the dissolution of the former USSR that, at the time of development, were incredibly fresh. I’ve never really liked others’ interpretations of the setting as being some kind of parallel to their conception of Soviet socialism. I just don’t want to choose to see it in that way, which is, to me, rather superficial. I think the game purposefully blends and contorts its historical setting for this reason: it’s a reflection on the past, not a re-creation of it.
i got recommended this video when i have never played, heard of, or seen any of pathologic so it was a very interesting experience piecing together what kind of game it is based on extremely early technical demo content 😅 great video !
Seeing the earlier version of the Town is just fascinating. It's so interesting that it sounds as if the Bachelor was originally not a truly trained doctor, that would make the dynamic between The Bachelor and the other healers so very different. Thanks for the showcase for us non-Russian speakers :D
No it would not make the dynamic more interesting, because that is essentially what Haruspex is. Pretty clear this iteration was retooled into the two contrasting characters.
3:50 i find this one of the most interesting parts, you can see how they started trying to incorporate investigating how the plague started very early on, and you can see how much it changed from final release.
Great video! I love hearing you talk, adapting the Slavic mindset into English lines. The demo looks way scarier than the final game. It looks like the Truman Show, some late 90s cartoon world... Or hell. I wonder what were they initially aiming for? Maybe the devs were just learning how to make maps and assets, so the town looked very... Experimental. This was made in 2002. The same year Morrowind and Tribunal expansion came out. I wonder if the Pathologic devs played it, saw Mournhold, city of light, city of magic, and decided the Pathologic town should look more like that rather than this dreamcore nightmare. The Town always reminded me of Mournhold. Anyway, I hope you'll make more videos. I love videos about old computer culture from distant countries.
A pathologic set in the 1990s would have definitely been something. Also looks like the character of tech demo Maria was split off into Maria and Eva at some point in development, with how she provides lodging for the bachelor and wants him in her bed. Kinda wish they let release Maria keep the unhinged, brutal threats, as a treat... They might be a look into how Nina was like.
Oh wow I've never seen any tech demo footage at all. It looks eerie and so odd and looks like it came from 95 instead of 2005. It sure makes the final release look so polished even if its such a contemporary game from 2005. Nice video by the way!
I kind of really really really want to play a game like Pathologic with an amateur surgeon set in a 90s post-USSR Buryatia, though I absolutely love Pathologic as we got it. Wish I could go into the alternate universe where this vision of the game was kept and bring it back into the modern day so we can all experience both. Excellent video by the way, thank you very much for bringing attention to this!
I laughed so hard at Maria's flower nipples... it's such a strange design 🤣 the technical demo seems quite different from the final version. Thanks for introducing this early attempt!

OMG HIIIIIII IT'S SO COOL TO SEE YOU HERE AND IT'S COOL WHAT YOU DID NEVERTHELESS!!! Didn't know about Kuron, also cool to know it now!!!
It's weird seeing development artifacts from Pathologic, I always believed that the game was spawned into existence rather than developed
didn't expect pathologic of all games to have a lego island phase
its so weird seeing a version of the town/game that isn't incredibly depressing in appearance

That would rule. Maybe the creators are anti communist and didnt like the game being an allegory for the USSRs collapse.

I've consider myself a pathlogic appreciator and and huge Ice pick fan. But it's a first time that I heard about playable alpha/demo on your channel

I tried this version when it was first published online, but didn't get much out of it since I don't speak Russian. Thanks for the translations!

This is so, so cool!!!
Feels like LSD dream emulator
The vibes on offer here are truly immaculate.
Very nice video, i didn't know this demo was a thing. I love your voice too! Subscribed
I have never heard of this game in my life! That's truly underground!
Never heard about this, thanks for sharing it, really interesting stuff

That "germs nerawareta machi" feel when walking around.
Man, I gotta replay Pathologic 2 ahead of the third game coming out.
This is insane!!!!
i am sure the channels name is a child of Yesenin genius , funny name , make my day, thanks.

Very nice video! Thanks for going through all this. It's hard to learn this stuff since I can't speak Russian, so thanks!
pretty sure they didn't plan for game to be "modern", i think they've used ArchiCAD to hastily mock up buildings just to have placeholders

was this made in the blender game engine?
Wait you can make technical demos? I need to do that
You usually MUST have one ready when looking for funding / publisher.
