Eric Burdon - Rock ‘n’ Roll Animal (2020 Documentary)

  • Apologies for all the edits - After many attempts to upload this, I had to remove all of the Animal songs due to copyright, otherwise utube would not allow it to be shown.....Hopefully you get the gist !
Eric Victor Burdon - Born Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne, England 1941. Then became an Animal.
Includes interviews with Sting, Bruce Springsteen, Steven Van Zandt, George Thorogood, Patti Smith
    Fun Facts in the documentary:
    - Bruce Springsteen blames The Animals for every song he's ever written.
    - "The Spanish City" (which still exists in part), was a large fairground complex in Whitley Bay on Northumberland coast. Often visited in their youth by the likes of Eric Burdon, Sting, Mark Knopfler and Hank Marvin no less...to name but a few. A big draw back in the day!

Eric really is a cool guy. My girlfriend was his housekeeper for a spell. I had her give him a copy of Ralph Gleason's epic tome to the SF music scene, "The Jefferson Airplane and the San Francisco Sound". The man who wrote "San Franciscan Nights" had never read it. He devoured it and appreciated it so much he gave my girl a huge armload of personal swag to give me. Eric Burdon T-shirts, photographs and even a pair of pajamas he never wore. I treasure that stuff 'till this day. Eric is probably the most genuine person that ever rocked the 60's. And still going strong! Great job on this doc. ***** 5 stars **

Great humour, he really makes me smile and laugh. He was the first singer that left a huge impression on me and we were handed down some 45s and an old mono record player from the early 1960s which my little brother and I loved. It came with 15 or so 45s and a few early animals, Beatles, Stones and Dylan records.

The man should be held in higher regard than he is. Wouldn't it be so cool if he sang a few duets & record them with Mick Jagger? Van Morrison? Tom Jones? Do it now gentlemen while you're all still vertical.

It was something to buy a 45 in the 1960s. My first 45 was bought when I was 12. We did paper rounds and stuff, hand me down clothes and old plimsoles and scout jumble sales which was a luxury. There was also those little cheap transistor radios made in Hong Kong from the market barrow boys well before Tandy came along. The ford Corrina mk 1 was a good car as was Hillman imp. What great days. I lived about 5 or 6 miles from Chelsea bridge but my gran lived in Fulham with sash windows, fire place on first floor of an old terraced Victorian rented house. Chelsea Bridge was well known for racing on bikes with rockers and mods and Eric mentioned his lovely Corvette which must have been so rare as American cars were very rare and we saw Harley's because there was Fred Warrs the main Harley Davidson importer main dealer where riders got new bikes and spares and servicing so you would always hear and see harleys in the kings road Chelsea.

Came back with ruined health, no teeth due to lack of good food, and to find the house had been sold because my mum couldn't pat the mortgage. Took them years to get back on their feet. The whole hippy thing only works in theory One of the most irritating aspects of that whole generation. . Whatever Eric Burdon is saying regarding not going to War may have gone over big at a hippy festival during the Vietnam War...but seems somewhat ridiculous when in the context of someone born during a German bombing raid. Other people's dads and sons were up there in Spitfires and Hurricanes trying their best to stop them killing civilians.

This was a great documentary. I was in a band in 1965 and toured with Herman Hermits and the Animals in US. Eric was a colorful character. Loved the band. It was fantastic. My band was just the opening act for the three bands. It was a pleasure moment in my life for sure. I knew every note of every song they played. I was a base player and studied Chas and how he played. Hilton Valentine was the friendliest with me. We traveled from city to city in a DC-3 plane. For a 15 year old base player in a band I can tell you it was a once in lifetime thrill. So cool to see Eric still getting around after all these years.

I recently bought a decent turntable for my tube amp system. I dusted off my old copy of Animalism, MGMs last release of that band's material, and one lp that was dumped directly into $2 dollar record bins. I always liked the Animals but I never realized just how authentic a singer Burdon is. No offense to his peer Jagger a great songwriter and showman, but now I believe Burdon is really the superior vocalist.

I'm a huge fan of Eric and the Animals. From a recording/engineering standpoint I'm so intrigued by the vocals on "House of the Rising Sun". Love to know the mic-preamp combo, eq/compression settings, etc. It's just so perfect -- and yet not. You can hear those valves screaming -harmonic bliss, saturated perfection. Very musical.

Great documentary to give fans a in-depth look at our musical Icon. But, they leave out what I believe are two major contributions from Eric. The song "Monterey", about the iconic Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and his work with the all African American band "WAR" (although harmonica player Lee Oskar is white), specifically the song every Burdon fan knows, "Spill The Wine".

    • @skidancin
      @skidancin 3 роки тому +13

Yes it's an extremely incomplete documentary with few examples of the great singing that defines him. The album Eric Burdon Declares War, had Spill the Wine, it also had a great piece of art known as "Tobacco Road" and also "Roland Kirk," Amazin stuff, then, as great as any unmentioned and\or unheard title here would be the absolutely Top Notch classic "when I was young." EDIT.. all that said, I do well appreciate what this little documentary adds.

    “As the Crow Flies “
    “Blue Feeling “
    “Cheatin’ …(?)”
    “Hey Gyp”
Then the familiar ones and When I was Young & Spill the Wine & Sky Pilot & San Francisco Nights and of course that song about life in old New Orleans ; House of the Rising Sun. Thanks

Jimi was his dear friend that's so clear even all these years later it shows in this interview he is still emotional thinking about it. I love Eric's passion for the old bikes and I totally relate and loved my BSA A10. They were bikes for working class guys when Eric was a teenager, affordable and would do a ton and go round bends without the frame flexing like the triumph bonnevilles of the day. Cars were a luxury many couldn't afford.
