Today I have a go at replacing the heater control panel of my Ducato. The switch failed not long after I bought the van. I suspect that when the resistor pack burned out, the previous owner didn't know to replace that and just punched the switch into oblivion. The panel is slightly deformed.
A subscriber of mine, Richard sent me his spare control panel with hand written notes for what needed to be done! Thanks so much Richard!!
Needless to say, not everything goes to plan, so I just replace the switch itself, not the panel which would have required me to get into the engine bay to disconnect the control cables.
Fast forward an hour or two and I have a working fan!! Hurrah!

    Hi,
The left rotary knob is partially blocked to regulate the temperature (hot / cold). So not the switch to set the speeds of the blower (1,2,3,4). Does anyone know what to do with this?
I already partially disassembled the dashboard to get to the rear of the control panel. The button itself is okay, but the mechanism where cables leave that disappear deeper into the dashboard blocks. I cannot reach the end of this cable or I have to dismantle the entire dashboard. Not knowing whether this is the solution, this seems quite drastic to me. Anyone guess what the problem could be?
    Thanks in advance. Ken

Here is a link to a couple of resources. The official Fiat workshop CD-ROM image will need a Windows machine to "mount" and run the software. It's kinda technical.
The second is a PDF of the electrical system. It might help.
Having disassembled most of the dash, the cables seem to go to the back of the dash below the heat exchanger. There's likely just a simple flap to control the mix of hot and cold air.
      Hope that helps. 😎👍

@@Mevi Thanks for your quick response and the files !! :-)
Do you think the flap control is under the heat exchanger? Not clearly visible on the pdf file. Unfortunately I have a mac pc .. so I can't open the CD rom .. haha.
At the rear of the heater control unit I see a black flap with teeth from which the cable departs over which the rotary knob fits, it is partly blocked. I can't do much there, so I'm afraid I'll have to dismantle the dashboard further to get to the end of the cable..

      @@Mevi Solved!
Just sharing for what it's worth and who can benefit from it in the future. After a whole weekend searching, the interior filiter eventually turned out to be the cause. The rotary knob blocked because it was was clamped by the cabin filter. Apparently not mounted that well during the last major overhaul.
Kind of stupid of me that I didn't check this first. Meanwhile specialist in dismantling and mounting dashboards. LOL :-)

Sadly I didn't pay much attention to which cable went where as my main focus was the dozens of (thankfully identical) screws and the switch.
If you know someone with a Windows machine, feel free to share the link. The content should also apply to Boxers and Relays aside from their different drivetrains.
I think we all imagine the rear of the dash as some magically sophisticated fandangle, but it's likely to be just springs and flaps, perhaps some cogs.
      Good luck!

    Hi, thanks for the video.
I watched it and enjoyed it, but when I had to change my fan switch approached it in a different way.
I have exactly the same setup and only removed the radio, Bluetooth units and 4 Philips screws for the cages. Then the single torx screw under cup holder, unclip trim panel this then allows access to all 4 torx screws that hold the panel in place. Push the panel back into the void. Rotate carefully towards you. The connector is easily removed and also allows access to the two tiny Philips screws holding switch in place.
Because they now face up, it's hard to drop them and easier to refit them.
Replace switch, refit connector and screws and refit 4 panel screws, single bottom panel screw, and finally 4 radio and Bluetooth cage screws. Refit Bluetooth and radio. Job done.
Left radio connected and just removed aerial to allow it to keep it's code and move out of the way.
Hope this helps anyone doing this job in the future making it alot easier and quicker.

That weekend away was a great laugh.
      Things I'd do differently are:
Spend some time living in it during the build, to get the best idea of what works.
      Longer or bigger bed
I'm only now getting used to a shorter bed. I've had a lot of nights broken sleep waking up after kicking or head butting a wall.
      Put heating in early on
The heater is going in this weekend, so I expect to have to take stuff apart and remove some of the floor to do it
      Buy a shorter, lighter van!
It's just me in here. I don't need so much space. I'd save on insurance and fuel.

Thank you so much for the video. However, I have a few tips: I found the separate fan switch on eBay for £ 24 + shipping from the UK and found that it can be changed without dismantling the entire panel, just removing the radio and the radio attachment, the compartment above the radio and the notepad holder, just six screws!! A mirror or cell phone's video camera in selfie mode is good help when removing and replacing the switch with it's two screws. Some extra metal screws 3x10mm, just in case, can be an good idea when puting the switch back...

If you only want to replace the switch, take out the radio console, reach in and take out the connector with locking clip at the bottom.
Then take a number one philipshead drillbit with short extension and take out the screws, it surely is fiddely but can be done in 15 minutes, be sure to clean the connector with contact cleaner, these switches burn out quickly because of contact corrosion.

Heater Panel and Switch Changing in Peugeot Boxer was a Horibble job ...Really painfull to fingers and nerves because of tight spaces :) I did that same thing today to my 2007 peugeot Boxer ... Reason was that heater switch was broken but first I thought that it was the heater blower motor and canged that ... didn't help! Resistor was checked earlier... that too was ok. Removing these parts must be done very carefully or some pieces of plastic clips or other will get broken. • @Mevi
      @Mevi  2 роки тому

That’s a garden “foam twist tie”. Bought from home bargains or similar. Twist into the shape of your cup holder! You can only really use a cup with a handle or it drops through. My cup used to rattle against the window, also mechanics fixing the van kept using it to close the door, so it got ruined. Closest I could find online was this.
      www.ebay.co.uk/itm/143489740068
These days I use A round plastic wicker basket pen tidy. A couple of ball bungees: one threaded through the base and around the arm rest, the other threaded through at the top to grip whatever cup I put in it. Looks goofy, but works. Also holds a can of monster for long drives.
If you want to adapt the existing ashtray on the console, you can get a drainpipe diameter adapter. The kind that connects 2 different sizes of drainpipe. I got one in grey pvc and sawed off the part I didn’t need. The remaining sections friction fit in the ashtray and have a nice rounded edge at the top. The grey is a close match too!!

Hi there! Thanks for the video. I don't know what issue you had with the heat blower before. But it happens that since yesterday none of the 4 levels are working. So maybe the resistor or maybe something else. Do you think the switch is broken too?
We use a lot the heat from the engine while we are driving and it's cold.

    • @Mevi
      @Mevi  2 роки тому

The resistor pack is easy to check. If it burns out, there could be damage to the wiring, melted cable sheathing or a melted plug. The resistor pack will probably have burnt connectors. You can buy replacement resistor packs that include a plug and wiring.
If none of your switch positions work, it does seem like it could be a burned out switch. My switch needed replacing again a year later. When I opened up the faulty switch, it was melted and burned up inside.
Check the resistor pack first. Replacing the switch is tricky, but learn from my failures in this video.

Resistor pack. It's under the passenger side of the dash. Up in the right corner tucked up behind the centre console. When it burns out, the 4th switch position is the only one that doesn't use the resistor pack.
Check the wiring and socket thoroughly for melted plastic and sheathing (my earth cable was melted enough to see bare copper). The pack itself is an easy fix once you have actually found it! I think I paid less than a tenner on ebay about 2.5 years ago.

He's a top bloke. He offered to fit it too, but our diaries clashed. I'll stop by when I'm next passing through his area.
